He settled at "the nine partners," Dutchess county, NY and also resided at
Pittstown, NY eight miles from the North river: He lived there before the

Beef" and was drawn from the river by a horse and chain for a distance of 10 or
more miles into the country.

It was probably this John Carpenter who then of the NorthEast Precinct of Dutchess County,
New York signed the "Articles of Association" in July of 1775.  Page 103

Hi John,
I saw the Carpenter Cousins Website online and wanted to update you on the family tree. I found that there was another sister to George, Higbie, and Amanda Melvina Carpenter. Eliza Snow Carpenter. She married an Edwin Hillyer.
I also found the exact birth date of John Carpenter and his date and place of death. He is buried in Jamaica, Queens, New York – I assume Old Prospect Cemetery with many of the Carpenters – but I cannot confirm that. His obituary just mentions burial in Jamaica, New York. He is not in Old Springfield Cemetery. He has nothing to do with Orange County, New York. John also served in the War of 1812.
Also, he married Mary Mayo’s sister Elizabeth after Mary died. They had a daughter, Louise Mary Carpenter who married a John Hartt.
All this info is in the attached document to update the Carpenter Cousin Descendants. Since it is in Word, perhaps it can be cut and pasted. I hope this does not foul up the numbers you assigned to each individual.
I created the descendants from Increase Carpenter and down. I came across other information for other descendants of his in the process.
Regards,
Brian

I attached John Carpenter’s obit, death record, and Muster Park Card for the War of 1812.
Correction for John Carpenter’s date of birth and date of death; born 28 February 1799 and died 23 September 1843 at 67 Orchard Street in New York City. Buried in Jamaica Long Island, New York – not sure exactly where in Jamaica. Perhaps you have an idea – I think it is possible that it was Prospect Cemetery. I know it was not Springfield Cemetery.

COMMENTS: by Gene Zubrinsky
The 1855 New York State census record of James and Mary Carpenter’s household informs us that William H.’s father had then been a Brooklyn merchant for the previous six years and, before that, had lived in Manhattan from at least 1839 (daughter Serena 16 in 1855, b. N.Y. County [Manhattan]). Moreover, James's first wife, Mary (Ward), died in Manhattan in 1837 (obit in Manhattan Newspaper).
It is therefore appropriate to exclude Sing Sing, Westchester County, and Newburg and Minisink, both in adjacent Orange County, as residential locations of William H.’s father, James Carpenter.

Descendant updates by Brian L. Kasler  bkasler@nycap.rr.com via email on 25 March 2015.
NOTE:  Errors in his submission have been fixed as cited below and elsewhere.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Newer notes follow - these take priority xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

BIRTH:
Clearly born in New York, but his actual birth date and place have not been found.
The 1855 state census gives James’s birthplace as New York County (i.e., Manhattan); that of 1865 has it as Queens, which could mean Jamaica. Perhaps Manhattan should be mentioned as a possibility. Per Gene Zubrinsky.

MARRIAGE:
He is clearly married by 1825, and maybe as early as about 1818/1820, to Mary Ward who died in 1837.
He marries again to Mary Ann Jube in 1838.

Mary Ward

NAME:
Sarah Wood or Mary Ward? Per son Cornelius his mother was Mary Ward.
Gene Zubrinsky writes in an email dated 29 Mar 2019:
...
James’s first wife was not Sarah Wood but Mary Ward:
“DIED ...
On Wednesday morning [2 Aug. 1837], after a lingering illness, Mrs. MARY, wife of Mr. James Carpenter and daughter of Israel Ward, deceased, of Westchester County, New York, in the 32nd year of her age"
Citation: New York Spectator, Thursday, 3 August 1837, Vol: XL, Issue 46, page 2, image at genealogybank.com
...
; I have a chart confirming that Wednesday was 2 Aug. 1837). Son Cornelius’s death certificate identifies his mother as Mary Ward and gives her birthplace as Ossining (Sing Sing) (Cornelius Adriance Carpenter, "New York, New York City Municipal Deaths, 1795-1949" —  FamilySearch.org ). It seems likely that a submitter to the Carpenter genealogy confused James’s residence with his first wife’s birthplace. Israel Ward is said to have died at Sing Sing in 1820 (The American Biographical Sketch Book - William HUNT (Publisher, at Albany.) - Google Books ); no probate record found.

PARENT:
Israel Ward is said to have married a daughter of John Rossell (The American Biographical Sketch Book - William HUNT (Publisher, at Albany.) - Google Books ). A fragmentary online posting names Israel’s wife as Sarah Rossel (Israel Ward (1763 - d.) - Genealogy ). This is unconfirmed, but if accurate, it might explain how the Carpenter genealogy got wrong both the forename and surname of James’s (first) wife: while her name wasn’t Sarah, perhaps her mother’s was; and Ward morphs easily into Wood. The Seventh Presbyterian Church of Jesus Christ was organized on March 27, 1818, by Rev. Elihu V. Baldwin, D. D., in the home of William Badoe, and the first house of worship was located on Sheriff Street, near Broome. In 1842, a new church was built, as designed by Napoleon Le Brun. For more than twenty years the church was known as "Dr. Hatfield's Church," due to the pastorate of the Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, D.D., who led the congregation from 1835 until he resigned in February 1856 to become pastor of the North Presbyterian Church. For many years, Seventh Presbyterian Church had the largest Sunday school in the United States. On February 4, 1934, the Seventh Presbyterian Church had its last service, after which it merged into the Church of the Sea and Land on Market and Henry Streets.  ...
