John Williams owned the farm adjoining the Horton and Clark farms, near the Wallkill meeting-house. He and some of his family were buried upon the farm over forty five years ago; the farm has been sold several times, and the burial ground is almost forgotten. James L. Carpenter now owns and lives upon the farm (1880).

Suggestio to birth place and bio correction that he was not killed in action but died of disease.
William was the son of John Sayre Carpenter (1807-1888) and Mary Ann Thompson (1808-1895).
He enlisted 31 December 1863 in New York City and enlisted as a private in Company K of the 39th Regiment of the New York Volunteers.
He was wounded in action on 17 June 1864 and he was admitted to a hospital several times during his service.
He died of disease in the 1st Division Hospital  at Fair Oaks on 24 January 1865.

Regiment History NEW YORK
THIRTY-NINTH INFANTRY
(Three Years)
Thirty-ninth Infantry.-Cols., Frederick G. D'Utassy, Augustus
Funk; Lieut.-Cols., Alexander Repetti, Charles Schwartz, James G.
Hughes, John McE. Hyde, David A. Allen; Majs., Charles Wiegand,
Anton Vekey, Charles Schwartz, Hugo Hillebrandt, Charles C.
Baker, John McE. Hyde, David A. Allen, Charles H. Ballou.
The 39th, the "Garibaldi Guard," recruited in New York city, was
composed of three Hungarian companies, three German, one Swiss,
one Italian, one French, one Spanish and one Portuguese, most of
whose members had already seen active service.
It was mustered into the U. S. service at New York, May 28, 1861,
for three years and left the state for Washington on the same
day. Camp Grinnell was established near Alexandria and occupied
until July 17, when the 39th participated in the movement of the
army toward Manassas with the 1st brigade, 5th division, though
in the battle of Bull Run the regiment was but slightly engaged.
After a few weeks at Alexandria much ill feeling prevailed over
the failure to receive some expected privileges and 50 members of
Co. G mutinied, but returned to the command after being
disciplined by arrest and imprisonment.
Until November it was encamped near Roach's mills, when winter
quarters were established at Hunter's Chapel. The brigade,
originally commanded by Gen. Blenker, was in the spring of 1862
commanded by Gen. Stahel and served in Blenker's division of
Sumner's corps.
In April, 1862, the division was assigned to Gen. Fremont's
command and joined his forces May 11, taking part in the
engagements near Strasburg and at Cross Keys. On June 26 the
39th was assigned to the 1st brigade, 3d division, 2nd corps of
the army under Gen. Pope, and encamped at Middletown, Va., during
July and August.
The regiment shared in the disaster at Harper's Ferry in Sept.,
1862, and in the surrender 530 of its members fell into the hands
of the enemy, but were paroled and proceeded to Camp Douglas,
Chicago. They were exchanged in November, returned to Washington
and established winter quarters at Centerville, where the
regiment was assigned to the 3d brigade, Casey's division, 3d
corps in Jan., 1863.
In June, 1863, it became part of the 3d brigade, 3d division, 2nd
corps, and moved to Gettysburg, where it fought valiantly in the
front of the left center, with a loss of 95 killed and wounded,
the brigade losing six field officers killed or seriously
wounded.
Three battle flags were captured by the 39th, a Mass battery was
recaptured, and the regiment received official commendation for
its valor. Moving southward with the army, the regiment
encountered the enemy at Auburn ford and Bristoe Station in
October; participated in the Mine Run campaign; went into winter
quarters at Brandy Station, where in Dec., 1863, four new
companies were received; in Jan., 1864, two others were added to
the regiment, which had been previously consolidated into a
battalion of four companies.
In February it was active at Morton's ford; was assigned in March
to the 3d brigade, 1st division, 2nd corps; shared in the
Wilderness campaign, being active at the Wilderness, at Todd's
tavern, the Po river, Spottsylvania, the North Anna, Totopotomoy
and Cold Harbor.
On June 25, 1864, the original members not reenlisted were
mustered out at New York city the remainder of the regiment was
left in the field and moved with the Army of the Potomac to
Petersburg. Seven companies, known as the 39th battalion, were
assigned to the consolidated brigade, 2nd corps, and were engaged
at Petersburg, Deep Bottom, at Reams' station, Hatcher's run,
White Oak ridge, and in the final assault on the Petersburg
fortifications April 2, 1865.
The battalion then joined in the pursuit of Lee's army and
performed various routine duties in the vicinity of Richmond
until July 1, 1865, when it was mustered out at Alexandria. The
39th lost during its term of service 119 by death from wounds,
and 159 by death from accident, imprisonment or disease, of whom
94 died in prison.

1st husband James Carpenter - buried with him

Arlington News | Arlington, Iowa | Thursday, January 10, 1901 | Page 5

The community was startled last Saturday by the announcement of the death of Mrs Lewis James.  She had been in usual good health, attending to her household duties, and caring for her husband who was quite ill, until Saturday and it seem incredulous that in so short a time her condition had become serious.  She first took a severe cold and it soon developed in paralysis and she rapidly sank away until Saturday, Jan 5th she cuccumed to that fell destroyer.

Elizabeth House was born in Sussex County NJ Dec 9 1827.  She was married to James Carpenter, Jan 15 1848 and resided in Penn unitl 1855 when they moved to Iowa settling in Colesburg Delaware county where they lived fifteen years, when they came to Fayette county, improving a farm in Scott township, where they lived until the death of Mr Carpenter which occurred Nov 27 1881.  Unto them were born seven children, two of which have proceeded their mother to  that better home.

On December 1 1883 she was united in marriage with Lewis James and soon after settled in Brush Creek now Arlington, where she has lived in an elegant home, enjoying the comforts of life, liberly provided by her husband.

Mr James is somewhat better but unable to leave the house, so the funeral took place from the family residence and was conducted by Rev Mattox, pastor of the Christian church.  The interment was at the Taylorville cemetery.  She was a loving wife and mother and her absence will be sorely felt by her husband and children and they feel that the vacant place can be filled by no other.  The husband and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

Terry,
A very helpful researcher (Minisink Valley Historical Society) has shared Benjamin's son, Levi V. Carpenter's obituary. It is as follows: (January 1898)
"He was born in the old stone fort, now a part of the farm house of Mr. Henry G. Cuddeback on June 29, 1832, being thus 65 years and 6 months of age." He was married to 1.Mary J. Perry, who died 15 years ago & 2.Mrs. Coleman, who survives him. He leaves besides his wife, sons Benjamin D, Peter E, Sanford, Abram C. Daughters: Mellissa Taylor & Minnie Sterritt. Brother-David Carpenter & 1/2 brother Christopher Hollenbeck & 1/2 sister Mrs Mary Ayers."
Nancy goes on to say,"I have a copy of the death certificate (not really a certificate just a journal entry) He died of Consumption. It only states he died in Port Jervis and where he is buried."
Another researcher from the Minisink Valley Historical Society is compiling information on my Carpenter Line and will share with me as soon as everything is properly checked out.

Hi Terry,
So glad you saw my new information. I don't have any clues concerning Elizabeth Canfield. The only possible clue that I can think of is that Levi had a half brother David Carpenter. I figured Elizabeth had passed away and Benjamin married a second time. But perhaps Elizabeth survived and remarried.
Also a fellow Carpenter researcher shared the following information with me and I thought I would share it with you. Benjamin Carpenter b. Abt 1757 in Jericho, Queens County, Long island. He married Eunice Stewart b. 1756. Their child, Benjamin, was b. Abt 1780 in Minisink, Orange County, New York.
Minisink is a neighboring town to Deerpark in New York. My Benjamin was recorded as 40-50 years old on the 1840 census. Time frame and location makes it possible for these Carpenters to be in my Carpenter family. I am hoping you might be able to help confirm my suspicions.

I am researching my gggrandfather Levi V. Carpenter. I just received Levi's Civil War Pension file today. His parents are identified as Benj. D. Carpenter and Elizabeth Canfield. Benj. and Elizabeth were living in the Town of Deerpark, New York when Levi was born in about 1833. I would appreciate any information about Benj. Carpenter or Elizabeth Canfield's family lines.
Thanks,
Jim

Jim: Here's a couple more clues that turned up in my Saturday notes from Orange Co. NY records after I posted the others:
Church records at Machackemack (Deerpark) Orange Co. NY record the birth of Elizabeth Canfield on 1 Sep 1809 to David and Mary (Sammons) Canfield. Her age correlates well with the Elizabeth Carpenter who was in Deerpark, Orange Co. NY in 1850 and in Lumberland, Sullivan Co. NY in 1860.
Same records record the birth of a child, no name given, on 22 Jan 1807 to Benjamin and Margaret (Decker) Carpenter -- could be your Benjamin D. Carpenter.

Jim: A few more clues that have turned up in Orange Co. NY records:
- Eleanor Carpenter, born in 1793, daughter of Benjamin and Margaret (Decker) Carpenter, married Levi VanEtten Jr.
- When Benjamin Carpenter died in 1821, Levi VanEtten Jr. was one of the executors of his will.
- Benjamin Carpenter who died in 1821 had a son Benjamin named in his will.
Levi VanEtten may be the person for whom your Levi V. Carpenter was named. If his father Benjamin D. Carpenter was a son of Benjamin and Margaret (Decker) Carpenter, he might have named a son after his brother-in-law.
More speculation, but could turn out to be good clues to follow.

Hi Jim -- Glad to see you've made more progress on your Carpenter line. There is a Benjamin Carpenter in Deerpark, Orange Co. NY in 1830 who appears to be the one there in 1840 with a son in the right age range to be Levi, born c1830-1835. In 1850 Deerpark, Orange Co. NY there is this Elizabeth:
Elizabeth Carpenter, age 40, born NY
Samuel Carpenter, 21, NY
Martin Carpenter 19, NY
She might or might not be Elizabeth (Canfield) Carpenter, widow of Benjamin -- the data don't fit perfectly, and Levi V. is not enumerated in her household. Any leads or clues you can give to help find her?
Your Levi V. is enumerated in Orange Co. NY in 1860:
Levi V. Carpenter, 26, NY, miller
Mary J. Carpenter, 25, NJ
Melissa A. Carpenter, 8, NY
Benjamin D. Carpenter, 5, NY
Charles W. Carpenter, 3, NY
John W. Carpenter, 7/12, NY
He was in Sullivan Co. NY in 1870 and Orange Co. NY in 1880, as previously documented.
If you can connect him back, I would be interested in learning more about this line -- the Orange Co. NY Carpenters may have had descendants in the southern states so I have been researching them.
Terry
