Suggest birth 1811 plus place. Suggested bio:
No birth record has been found, but census record from 1850, 1860 and 1880 list a birth about 1812. The 1870 list a birth about 1814.  Since census record often use age last birthday, the birth year of 1811 is appropriate.

Mrs. Harriet M. Carpenter.
The funeral of Mrs. Harriet M. Carpenter will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock and will be private. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Carpenter was a daughter of Major Samuel Strong, one of the pioneer settlers of the Chemung Valley, whose home and farm were on the river road between Elmira and Wellsburg. Born there in the year 1817 only thirty-nine years after. General Sullivan defeated and dispossessed the original Indian occupants. She was identified with most of the early his-tory of the valley and its inhabitants and her death severs another of the few remaining links that connect the early and the later history of this region. By reason of the training she received in those early and strenuous days and her natural strength of character. Mrs. Carpenter was able to serve well her day and generation.

COMMENT:
Reportedly died 5 mos, 19ds per inscription. See GRAVE.
Based on a death date of 22 Aug 1850 this claculates to being born on 3 Mar 1850. Assuming an error of 19 being 9 then the birth would be 13 Mar 1850.

Bio:
Family bible record indicates she died September 21, 1850. However, two transcriptions from 1932 and 1951 indicated August 22. The one transcription indicated 5 months and 19 days at death. A March birth and an August death would be 5 months, but the 19 days does not compute correctly and perhaps the memorial read 9 days.
Inscription: Julia N. daughter of E. S. & H. N. Carpenter died Aug. 22, 1850 aged 5 mos & 19 ds - 1951 transcription. A 1932 transcription - August 22, 1855 aged 5 yrs.

In witness whereof I have herewith let my hand and seal this thirteenth day of July in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two.  Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Hannah Cooley as and for her last Will and Testament on our presence, who at her request Subscribed our names hereto as Witnesses, in her presence, and in the presence of each other.
Elijah Carpenter
Wm. Maxwell
Azubah Seely
Hannah Cooley

Tioga County Ls - Be it remembered that on the tenth day of February in the Year of our Lord One Thousand eight hundred and twenty three personally appeared before me Robert Laurence Surrogate of the County of Tioga, William Maxwell one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing instrument of writing purporting  to be the last Will and Testament of Hannah Cooley late of the town of Elmira in the said County of Tioga deceased, who being by me duly sworn did disclose and say that he drew up the said instrument of writing at the request of the testatrix, and that he was present and did see her the said Hannah Cooley sign and seal the same, and in the presence also of Elijah Carpenter and Azubah Seely subscribed their names as Witnesses thereto in the presence of the testatrix and of each other. And whereas a caveat has been entered before me the said Surrogate by Samuel S. Seely  one of the heirs at law of the said testatrix against the proving of the last will and testament of the said testatrix alleging her incapacity to make a will, and a hearing of the parties interested in the said will having this day been had before me and several witnesses examined under oath it appears that the memory of the said testatrix was somewhat impaired but it does not appear that her understanding and reasoning powers of mind were so destroyed  as to render her unfit to the transact her ordinary business, or to make a will. And as it does not appear in testimony that at the time of making this Will there was any undue influence or coertion [sic] used towards her for this purpose. I do therefore allow and approve of this instrument as the last Will and Testament of the said Hannah Cooley deceased.
1. Robert Laurence Surrogate

NOTE:  Her husband - Jonathan Cooley and his will is cited next.

Through the Viewfinder: Photos of the National Soldiers’ Home, Sawtelle, Los Angeles, 1910s
BY HOMESTEADMUSEUM POSTED ON JANUARY 25, 2019
https://homesteadmuseum.blog/2019/01/25/through-the-viewfinder-photos-of-the-national-soldiers-home-sawtelle-los-angeles-1910s/
by Paul R. Spitzzeri

It was known officially as the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Veteran Soldiers, with sites across the country, and it opened in 1888 on land donated by John Wolfskill, orange grower and son of early American settler William Wolfskill; former United States Senator from Nevada, John P. Jones, also the prime founder of the city of Santa Monica; and Arcadia Bandini Stearns Baker, member of a prominent Californio family, widow of merchant and land baron Abel Stearns from whom she inherited a large estate, and wife of Robert S. Baker.

Situated on over 700 acres, the facility had barracks designed by prominent architect Stanford White, a distinctive shingle-style chapel and streetcar depot by J. Lee Burton, and a host of other interesting structures, with expansive and meticulously landscaped grounds, and a large cemetery.  Yet, it was operated much like a military encampment with barracks, a mess hall, uniforms, enforced Army rules (though not as stringent as when the men were in the service), and the need to apply for a pass to “go on leave.”

For thousands of veterans who had physical and mental disabilities, the facility was home for decades and tonight’s post features several photographs from the Homestead’s collection of structures at the home, all dating from the 1910s.

The concept of providing homes for disabled soldiers was an outgrowth of the Civil War, which involved an unprecedented number of American men in uniform and, consequently, an enormous number of veterans who needed assistance in subsequent years.  A bill was passed by Congress in March 1865 for a National Asylum for Volunteer Disabled Soldiers, just before the surrender of the Confederates at Appomattox in Virginia ended the national nightmare.

The following year the first home opened in Maine, soon followed by others in Ohio and Wisconsin.  Subsequently, a dozen more branches were established, including the one in Sawtelle, for a time an incorporated city before it was annexed into the City of Los Angeles.  In 1873, the word “asylum” was dropped in favor of the more hospitable and less stigmatizing “home.”

The emphasis on a more “homey” environment was enhanced by the addition of many recreational components, with games, entertainment, libraries and other elements introduced over the years.  The Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, later part of the Pacific Electric Railway system, included the home as part of its famed “Balloon Route,” so named because of its shape, with residents able to use the system, but tourists also visited and often had their photos taken on the steps of the main administration building (the Homestead collection has a few of these, as well.)

For the first several years, funding for the homes came from court-martial fines and forfeitures from desertions, but this was clearly inadequate, so Congress began making appropriations by the mid-1870s.  Just after the opening of the Pacific Branch, pension laws were loosened so that more soldiers were eligible for admission.

By the end of the 19th century, it was reported that over 100,000 soldiers were cared for in the entire system, almost all from the Civil War, though there were a few from the Mexican-American War and the recently concluded Spanish American War.  Notably, black soldiers, who only comprised about 2% of those served although they totaled about 10% of Union army service members, lived in segregated housing and ate separately at the mess hall.

In the post-World War I era, changes were underfoot to massively overhaul the entire system of dealing with the nation’s veterans.  For example, native American veterans were permitted to receive services by legislation passed in 1919 and women veterans became eligible for services four years later.  In 1928, militia and national guard veterans were also covered.  The government also moved to develop war risk insurance, public health service, and vocational education programs.

This led to the formation, in 1921, of the Veterans Bureau.  In 1930, the soldiers’ homes, along with that bureau and a pension bureau, were placed under the auspices of the new Veterans Administration (revamped in the late 1980s as the Department of Veterans Affairs, a Cabinet level department, and, at the Pacific Branch, a new hospital, the Wadsworth, opened in 1927 replacing the earlier Barry facility.

By that time, there were some 20,000 veterans being served in the home system, only about 3.5% were from the Civil War (which concluded 65 years previously), while nearly a quarter were from the Spanish-American War.  The vast majority were from the significant mobilization of Americans for the First World War, a little over a decade before.

As the 20th century progressed, the emphasis for veterans was less about residential care at homes and more about health services and other programs.  Most of the 19th century buildings at the Sawtelle home were torn down during the 1960s, mirroring in a way the destruction of similar era structures in downtown Los Angeles as part of urban renewal.  The construction of Interstate 405 divided what was left of the original acreage and more recently the facility was reconstituted as what is now the West Los Angeles Medical Center of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System.

These photos are among a group in the museum’s holdings of the Pacific Branch home and reflect an important part of our region’s military history, though few who drive by the VA facility today know much about its rich history.

Bio:
HON. DAVID McMASTER —
Mr. McMaster was born in Unadilla, Otsego, N. Y., on the 21st of April, 1804. He is a graduate of Hamilton College, in the class of 1826. He began the same year the study of law at Norwich, Chenango Co., and in the fall of that year came to Bath, and continued his legal studies with Hon. William Woods, and was admitted in 1827. His first practice was in Bath, in 1827, in partnership with Hon. Henry W. Rogers, and, with the exception of one year in Clyde, Wayne Co. (1828-29), he practiced continuously in this village till 1847, a portion of the time in partnership with Ziba A. Leland and L. H. Read, both since deceased.
Under the new constitution, in June, 1847, Mr. McMaster was elected county judge and surrogate of Steuben County, which offices he filled in a manner creditable to himself and his constituents. In 1856 he was re-elected to both offices for a term of four years, and discharged the duties of the same with that care and fidelity characteristic of him both as a lawyer and a judge. Few men, either in their professional or official duties, have gained or retained the esteem and confidence of their fellow-citizens in a higher degree than has Judge McMaster.
He was married, Feb. 13, 1828, to Miss Adeline A. Humphreys, daughter of the late Guy Humphreys, of Marcellus, N. Y., who died Oct. 7, 1841. By this marriage he has two children living.
On February 22, 1843, he married, for his second wife, Mary, daughter of the late Hon. George C. Edwards, of Bath. Of the children by this marriage six are living.

======================
Honor Comes Too Late for 'Grand Old Man'
Colonel George Edwards Will Be Buried on Dedication Day

Berkeley, Nov. 20 - Friday, which was to have been the biggest day of Col. George C. Edwards' life, will be the day of his funeral.

The University of California was to have dedicated the new southwest athletic and training field in honor of the "grand old man of the university." The field was to have been christened "Edwards Field," in honor of its oldest alumnus.

A radio had been hooked up at the old man's bedside so that he might hear the ceremony.

Edwards died yesterday, his failing strength of 78 years unable to sustain him.

The field was to have been a tribute to the elderly man's constant interest in university affairs. He was present at every athletic event until his final illness two months ago.

He came by the title of colonel as commandant of the old university cadets. He entered the university in 1869, joined the faculty in 1909, became professor of mathematics and was retired in 1918. He was one of the 12 members of the university's first graduating class.

Our Early History - Page 5
...
The next in regular order is the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr. from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county. where they remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the farm known as the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys. Upon this farm and at the home of S. Carpenter, Sr., was organized the first church, and within the walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within he bounds of our township. The first sermon the surviving members of the family can recollect was by a a Mr. Bacon, a minister traveling through the country on foot, carrying his saddle bags on hls arm, in 1810-11. He remained overnight with the Carpenters, and they collected the neighbors and he preached what they think the first sermon. Yet J. B Finley, in his history of .early Methodism, says he preached it the cabin of S Carpenter, Sr , the first sermon preached in the township which was late in 1810, or in the next year.
Yet it is possible it was only the first sermon preached by a minister on his regular work. Possibly Rev. Finley preached the the sermon, but it failed to make the same impression on the young members of the family. Mr. Carpenter erected a brick residence in 1821, which was the first brick house its the township. He died March 1834. in his 81st year. His son, Rev. Samuel Carpenter, settled on the farm adjoining his feather's, now the home of his son, Elnathan and erected a brick residence in the year 1827, which is the oldest brick building standing is the township.
He was Married to  (Page 6) Mercy Correll on the 21st day of December 1809 by Rev. T. Harris, of Granville, and had they been married in the township would have been the first, but though both had been living in the township.  And immediately after marriage made this their home. They were married at the bride's mother's in Granville, near the old College ground. Hence the marriage of Gaeon Correll to Miss Julia Lobdell on July 17th, 1810 was the first marriage in the Township. Rev. S. Carpenter died in August 1861, aged 78 years.
Of the Carpenter family who came to the township in 1809  there are two surviving members, Mrs. smith and Mrs. Beaumont.
