Subject: RE: Amanda Malvina Carpenter Hutson
Just so everyone knows, I spoke today with the Historian of the New Utrecht Reformed Church and he said those children buried in their cemetery were not of John and Mary Carpenter. They belonged to John and Margaret Carpenter. This appears not to apply to our family. Someone along the line took the abbreviation for Margaret as meaning Mary.

PARENTS:
Too many online trees claim Anthony Willet Carpenter (RIN 52149 - b. abt Sep 1759) as the father.
The best reason - wthout any documentation - given is that that family is in the right time and place.
And they seem to ignore that one of Anthony Willet Carpenter's children - Dr. John Carpenter was born 17 Apr 1791 while Charles Stephen Carpenter was born on 9 Aug 1791. And one person stated that if CSC was born in 1792 then everything would look correct. And sure enough, I found that he changed 9 Aug 1791 to 9 Aug 1792. And he changed New Brunswick to Maine for the birth.
Please see the conflicting DOBs in that family.COMMENT:
We really need a male Carpenter descendant on this line to Y-DNA test. And if they match one of the 42 known orgnized groups in the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - then we can do crss checking on that group's genelogy. And if they match one of the Group 98 or 99 members then that also would be helpful.GRAVE: images

Subject: Carpenter
...
Wilkins Carpenter….. this was the last of our line to stay in the New York area. He died fairly young and his widow (Mellisant Watkins) remarried a Nathaniel Lockwood – they moved to Wisconsin (Concord, Jefferson, WI). Mellisant had three children with Wilkins before his death; Pheobe (married and stayed in New York), Charles Carr (settled in Pepin, Pepin CO., WI), and Verdine E (who also went to WI, but later died at Lake Providence, Louisiana during the Civil War).
...
After the death of Wilkins Carpenter, his wife Mellisant remarried Nathaniel Lockwood.
CENSUS: 1830 US Census
Mellisant and Wilkins were still living in New York for the 1830 Census of Mammakating, Sullivan,
NewYork. While the census does not give individual ages, I think it's safe to assume Wilkins,
Mellisant, Phebe, Charles Carr, and baby Verdine were present in this household.CENSUS: 1840 US Census
By the 1840 census, she is in the household of Nathaniel Lockwood, still in Mammakating, Sullivan, New York.
Her and Wilkins children are present in this household along with a male child "under 5" - which
leads us to believe this would be Mellisant and Nathaniel's first child William, however, William is
reported to have died in 1839, so I believe his "death date" may be wrong, and he died after the
1840 census.CENSUS: 1850 US Census
By 1850, they are in Wisconsin (Concord, Jefferson Co., WI). Nathaniel is a farmer
(age 38), Mellisant (age 47), Submit (age 12), Samuel (age 10), George (age 8), and Verdine
Carpenter (age 19) all listing their birthplace as New York. With George's age of 8, they couldn't
have left New York any sooner than 1842.CENSUS: 1860 US Census
By 1860 they are still in Concord, Nathaniel is 48,
Mellisant is 56, Samuel is 20, and George is 17 - Verdine has moved out by this time.CENSUS: 1870 US Census
The 1870 Sullivan, Jefferson Co., WI US Federal Census Mortality Schedule (1850-1885) shows
that Mellisant died in December of 1870.
Notes for Phebe Anne Carpenter:
See George S Lockwood's (Phebe's half-brother) letter to Charles Carr Carpenter in
regards to Phebe's death, he was present at the time at her request.
Civil War Soldier - died of disease.
Notes for Verdine E. Carpenter:
According to the Roster Wisconsin Volunteers, "G" Company 16th Infantry (Civil
War 1861-1865) Verdine died on February 23, 1863 from "disease".This is further supported by a letter from J. Alcott to Charles Carr Carpenter where
he informs him of his brother's death. It is dated February 23, 1863.
Please see letter for more details. From Elizabeth (Carpenter) Egger's book.... "Verdine died while in service of his
country in the Civil War. Here are a few lines received by his brother Charles C from
Verdine's commanding officer at the time of his death. "He was beloved by all his
brother soldiers that knew him. He done his part as soldier well and without a
murmur. His disease was described by his doctor as the Bloody Flux"....."
