He was a farmer.  For more than 20 years he held office of deputy sheriff and
was frequently elected constable by the town.  He was a justice of the peace
and postmaster, and was representative to the legislature of the state of
VT.  He was well posted in politics, a fluent debator among his neighbors
and stronger in arguements than the ordinary run of men.  Although trustworthy,
and shrewd in business, he accumulated but little property.  He was a
particularly fine looking man, easy in his manners, social in his habits and a
favorite amoung his acquaintances.
He married Esther Ann Luce, a daughter of a minister of some renown, and a
woman of more than ordinary personal attraction and mental accomplishments.

The Dartmouth College Library bought the Papers of Judge Frederick Vose  from
Charles Apfelbaum, Rare Books and Collections, Valley Stream, New York, in
1987. A fine selection of records from early (1825-ca. 1855) Cheshire County,
New Hampshire courts, this collection will provide researchers with a rare
glimpse of the legal and economic problems faced by New Hampshire residents
during the mid-1800s. Although the majority of the suits were brought for
non-payment of debts, there are also cases concerning theft, assault and  battery,
breach of promise, divorce, arson, and the settlement of  estates.

Carpenter, Henry, Dr.
Released 20 June 2003
Chesterfield, Cheshire County, New Hampshire History

Dr. Henry Carpenter was born in Alstead, N. H., December 24, 1803. His father, Eber Carpenter, was a practicing physician in Alstead from 1802 until his death, May 23, 1841. Henry, the eldest of his eight sons, distinguished himself in the profession of medicine and surgery. He graduated medicine at Castleton, Vt., in 1825, and soon after settled in Chesterfield where he soon gave evidence of superior skill, and with a growing reputation as such, continued the practice of his profession until his death, August 1852. Decisive in all things, ignoring creeds, he spent his life in ministering to the wants of his fellow men, believing that acts, and not creeds or belief constituted true religion. He was a man of large sympathies. He married Lydia H. Chandler, of Colerain, Mass., in 1829, and had born to him two daughters, Helen and Lucretia. His wife died in 1837. Only one of daughters, Lucretia A., is living, and resides in Montrose, Pa., highly esteeme and noted for her Christian virtues. Dr. Carpenter served as representative in the legislature of the state with commendable ability, and in all things in trusted to his care was a man of accredited worth. A son by a later marriage, Charles Henry, served in the late Rebellion, and distinguished himself by meritorious acts and duties during the war, dying in Mississippi soon after the close of the same, while yet in the service of the United States. Dr. Carpenter was a man of commanding appearance, a true representative of liberal republican principles, and a strict adherent of justice and right.

John Lewis Hatfield
Birth: Nov. 13, 1838
Athens County
Ohio, USA
Death: Aug. 19, 1926
San Bernardino County
California, USA
John L. Hatfield was born in McArthur, Ohio November 13, 1838. McArthur was the County Seat for Athens County. His father was Isaac Hatfield, who was a native of Virginia. Of English ancestry, Isaac was born in October, 1799.
Coming from a farming background, the young Isaac Hatfield headed to the Ohio territory when it came time for him to begin his own enterprise. John's father Isaac was married to Mary Clark who was also a Virginian. Mary Clark came from sturdy Scottish stock. She was born October 3, 1803. Mary's father was one of the early settlers of Ohio. Her grandfather Clark had fought in the Revolutionary War and had served as a sergeant under General Harrison in the War of 1812. William Henry Harrison, of course, would go on to become the ninth President of the United States. John Hatfield's mother lived to a very advanced age, passing away just a few years before the turn of the 20th Century, 1898.
John was the youngest of seven children, and, along with his siblings, did farm chores and when opportunities arose, attended local district schools before enrolling at Ohio University at age eighteen. Founded in Athens, Ohio in 1804, it was the first university established in the Northwest Territory. After graduation he must have found brief employment as his enlistment papers indicate that he worked in insurance. Possibly he was putting his university skills to good use before his unit was embodied. In any event, the 90th Ohio Volunteer Infantry formed August 7, 1862 at Camp Circleville, Ohio.
John L. Hatfield must have taken well to military life, as he was promoted from Private to 1st Sergeant within a month of joining his Company B. During the Battle of Stone River, Hatfield was again promoted, this time to 2nd Lieutenant, on January 1, 1863. A year after receiving that opportunity, he was made 1st Lieutenant of Company B. Regimental records reveal that John L. Hatfield was discharged because of disabilities on August 5, 1864 by order of Major General George H. Thomas, commander of the Army of the Cumberland.
After his recuperation, John took a teaching position in McArthur, Ohio. McArthur was a small farming village and the County Seat for Vinton County. It was named for the Revolutionary War General Duncan McArthur. Hatfield also taught school in Little Rock, Arkansas. He moved once again, this time to become a preacher in Missouri. Finally, he moved back to his alma mater, Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he was a professor of Latin and Literature for twelve years.
John L. Hatfield married Helen M. Carpenter in 1867. Helen was born in Athens, Ohio January 20, 1841. She and John had five children, of which four survived to adulthood. George E. Hatfield was born April 21, 1868. George would grow up to be a physician. Another son, Edward T. Hatfield became an attorney and realtor in Chicago. Hatfield's daughter Lena became a physician, and was a missionary in China. Their fourth adult child, Florence married Samuel W. Stanley and lived with him in Gardena, California.
John and his wife Helen moved from Ohio to Indianola, Iowa near his son George, who practiced medicine nearby. His brief biography in the history of Warren County, Iowa indicated that he had retired due to his physical condition and moved to the county in 1882. The biography states that he was receiving a pension from the Methodist Episcopal Church, so presumably he had been an active minister, possibly even while he was teaching at Ohio University.
Like so many Civil War veterans who fought for the Union, on February 14, 1885, John Hatfield joined the Grand Army of the Republic Post 116, the James T. Randolph" Post that was chartered on December 28, 1882 with 12 charter members. They eventually included 303 veterans before they disbanded sometime before November 1, 1943. He continued his membership until he was shown as discharged in that organization in 1893. He was a staunch Republican, and evidently enjoyed his membership in a fraternal organization, the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
John L. Hatfield's wife Helen died in 1906. When Dr. George E. Hatfield and his wife Olive A. Hatfield, born Snuggs, moved to Southern California, apparently his father, in failing health and a widower, moved with them. His grave marker in Westminster Memorial Park shows that he died in 1927. His son George passed away on July 9, 1941, and he is buried beside his father, and his wife Olive. Olive's gravestone reveals that she was born in 1872 and that she died in 1943.
