NOTES:
A Baptist Minister.
He was baptized by Elon Gates in Whitesboro, New York, October, 1818; licensed
to preach in 1819, and ordained February, 1821 at the age of 20 years and 2
months.  He was the first pastor of the church in his native town.  He
afterwards went to Little Falls, and thence to Romulus, from there he went to
Phelps.  He also in connection with his other duties, had the over-sight of
churches in the following places, Whitestown, Geneva, Phelps Village and
Elbridge.  He also spent a number of years in agency work mostly for the state
convention.

E-MAIL: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 From: MzCortez@aol.com
Dear John,
I am so glad that you discovered this marriage and the family on internet
(Dick Dutton data base).  I believe I have seen that website, but have not
reviewed it since your latest correspondence.
As Calvin Green Carpenter #  2962 Carpenter Memorial, was the son of
Nathaniel , of Stephen, of Stephen, of Noah, of William, the immigrant.  He
was a Baptist minister in
Phelps, NY church that was closely associated with my Melvin family (i.e.
Melvin/Wisner/Carpenter), I checked my various docs and found some additional
information that may be of interest.   In 1839 and 1844 he bought and sold
property in Ontario Co. (from website list).
The Ontario Co. surragate Court lists a Nancy M. Carpenter, Phelps, 1877.
A few pages in the PHELPSTOWN FOOTPRINTS by pub. 1962 by Mabel E. Oaks
discusses the Carpenters (His brother Elon was also in the area).  A
statement on pg. 25 may be of interest, "The Carpenters were a fine family
whose name has disappeared from the local scene.  Carleton DeVall and his
brother are the Elder's greatgrandsons.  Carleton has in his possession very
old Carpenter birth records and the family coat of arms.  First of the name
to come over from England arrived in Massachusetts before 1650.  The
Carpenters were related to Gov. Bradford of Plymouth Colony fame, to Roger
Williams, founder of Rhode Island, and to Sir Walter Scott."
According to the Carpenter Memorial he married first (1825) Laura Haskins b
1804 d 1834 Ch Calvin Hasseltine m Jennie K. Delano, Geneva NY and Stephen
Haskins b 1831 m. Frances C. Curtis , Prof Wisconsin state Univ. ,  and
married second; Nancy Monroe August 19, 1834, dau of John "Monroe" of
Elbridge, N.Y.    Ch: John Monroe b 1842 m emma A. Draper, Mary Elizabeth b
1835, Laura Maria b 1839, Emma caroline b 1840 m Jerome P. Wood, Mary b 1844,
Hannah Louisa b 1846.
NANCY MONROE  b. Sept 26, 1806 and d. Feb. 16, 1877, as given in the
Carpenter Memorial must be the daughter of JOHN C. MUNRO, brother of David
MUNRO who married Abigail Carpenter, daugher of MOSES and HANNAH (SMITH)
CARPENTER.
MOSES CARPENTER is # 302 in the Carpenter Memorial, family #  130 1/2, which
should be corrected to show the names of his 1st and 2nd wives and his children.
He first married Elizabeth Runyon, daughter of Richard and Jane VanCourt
Runyon of Morris Co., N.J.  Their daughter, Elizabeth Runyon Carpenter was
born 2 Oct. 1774 and baptized in the Goshen Pres. Church on 6 Feb 1775 who
married James Wisner.
He next married Hannah Smith, daughter of Henry and Joanna Smith.  Daughters
were Susannah who married Michael Redmond (or Redman), # 2 ?
Joanna who married Jesse Reed (Read),
and Abigail who married John MUNRO, above.
The Carpenter Memorial is in error as it states that Moses was killed at
Minisink in Orange Co., NY.  Moses Carpenter and James Wisner left Orange Co.
and went to Onondaga Co. about 1794.
Moses Carpenter's  will is posted on the Onondaga Co. Gen Web site and lists
his children and grandchildren.
John or Margaret, please make corrections to any errors that I have.  I had
looked at  Calvin G. Carpenter earlier, wondering if he could lead us to
validation of the parents of Moses!  Entirely different line from the "get go."

Subject: Check out History of the Church
John,
This seems to be Calvin Green Carpenter who is listed in my "Personalities of Melvin Hill Cemetery" book - Phelps, NY.  pastor of the Phelps church from 1843 - 1848 (pg 8).
Still in Oregon.............weeds are waiting for me............Phoebe

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~taughannock/kendaia/8history.html

The pastorate of Rev. C. G. Carpenter, began the Fall of 1838, and terminated April 1, 1843, nearly five years of association in the Lord's work, which indicates in the record a very warm relation between pastor and people, as well as an honest statement of facts; in 1840 the record presents the church as "cold and stupid." When discipline was necessary it was prosecuted with a marked tenderness and brotherly consideration. As in the preceding pastorate, this closed with a season of revival and ingathering.

Mr. Carpenter was born December 22, 1800, in Fairfield, Herkimer Co., N. Y. Converted at the age of eighteen, he entered very soon the work of the ministry, being ordained before reaching his majority. In 1824, he entered the work of the Baptist Missionary Convention of the State of New York. The same year he was one of three to procure the publication of the "New York Baptist Register," now "The Examiner," the leading Baptist paper of the present time. A year later (1825), he rode on horseback from Utica to Rochester, soliciting subscriptions for the new paper, and explaining the object and needs of the State Convention. For seventy-two years he was a minister of the Gospel, a longer period than the three score and ten years allotted to man. It is now over half a century since Mr. Carpenter left this community, and settled at Phelps, where he died January 19, 1893.

DEATH:Died young?

6747. Hiram Carpenter

NAME:
Some claim he is Hiram Sherman but I see no proof or that or a middle initial S.
Need some proof!

BIRTH:
Some claim he was born in Herkimer County or Oneida County, NY - BUT NO PROOF other than a  Hiram Carpenter was in those counties in 1830. See 1830 US Census and comments below.

PARENTS:
Some claim his father was Nathaniel Carpenter (1771-1820) who married an Elizabeth "Betsy" Green but that family has a child born in the late portion of 1803 with no sign of a Hiram. See RIN 22425.
NOTE:
Based on the data below and relationship to those found in1830/1840 around him, the likely father is George Washington Carpenter RIN 47007 (1780 MA -1808 NY) and Mary Horton (1782 MA - 1874 ?).  BUT ...
Hiram is listed as being born in NY 1803, but GWC was not in Deerfield, Oneida, NY until 1806/1807.
Children sequence, if born to GWC should indicate he was born in Berkshire, MA.
