Subject: Re: Fwd: Original Family Record - Justin & Elizabeth Brown Carpenter of Lexington, OH
John:
You are correct - it is a MARRIAGE certificate. The State of Delaware document reads, in part: "Whereas, application hath been made according to law, by Heinrich Utendorfer of the County of New Castle in the said State of Delaware, single man, and Mary Brown of the County of New Castle in the state aforesaid, single woman, to be joined together in the holy bonds of Matrimony...at Wilmington the Eleventh day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty two..."I've been in contact with a local history society in Franklin Township, Sauk County, WI where the six sons of Justin Carpenter of Lexington, OH established farms in the 1850's. According to the society's website, a large number of German immigrants also established farms in that township. A society volunteer/researcher indicated that it was not uncommon for the local German immigrants to interchange first/given names with middle names and to "Americanize" those names. So "Heinrich Utendorfer" became known as "George Heinrich Utendorfer" and then "George Henry Utendorfer" and "Mary Brown Utendorfer" used "Maria" - per her obituary and headstone - as her first name. The researcher did not offer any formal name-change documentation. (I'm wondering if "Brown" was originally "Braun".)

Subject: Re: Favor - Birthplace of My Great-Grandfather, John HiramCarpenter- 4
Hi John:
I finally have some breathing room and can pretty much put the "Birthplace of John Hiram Carpenter Issue" to rest. - It was Richland County, Ohio. If it was the wife who answered the questions of the census taker while the husband was tending to farm choses, you'd think she would remember if one of her eight living sons was not born in Ohio but in Illinois instead. Per the 1850 and 1860, the census reports for all children had recorded "Ohio" as their birthplaces. You asked me to: 1) confirm the land purchases by Justin Carpenter-8729 in Richland County, Illinois, and, 2) offer my thoughts on Illinois land speculation in the mid-nineteenth century as described in the book image you sent.
...
As for land speculation. Justin could have used his second cousin, Daniel Carpenter, or any close friend(s) from western Richland County, Ohio, to act as his agent(s) in Illinois. The State of Illinois says that the Olney area in Richland County, Illinois, was settled by Ohio transplants, many from Richland County, hence the source of the name for the Illinois County. Reports must have relayed to Justin that all of the properties were unsuitable for farming because of poor drainage and extensive standing water. Thus, he probably just abandoned the venture. An unanswered question remains: where did Justin and Elizabeth Carpenter, and their 8 living children, live from April 1843, when the Worthington Township farm was sold, and April 1844, when Justin purchased the Troy Township farm northwest of Lexington where he and Elizabeth lived out their remaining years? I won't lose any more sleep in trying to find an answer to that question.
Thanks again for bringing clarity to the birthplace question. I'll be in touch with info on Justin-8739 and his family, and on his son, Daniel-135139 and his descendants.

Six Carpenter Brothers, Pioneer Settlers in White Mound
By James R. Carpenter
Author’s Preface
This article recounts the story of six Carpenter brothers
who relocated from Morrow County, Ohio to the White
Mound Settlement in Franklin Township. It provides
personal histories and accomplishments of the six
brothers, their six wives and their fourteen children.
Two of the children were born in Morrow County, and
the other twelve were born in White Mound.
Background
Justin Carpenter (1798-1875) was born in Vermont and
moved with his parents to Knox County, Ohio after
1820. In 1825, he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown
(1804-1891) in the village of Fredericktown, Knox
County.
Justin moved his family within the Ohio counties of
Knox and Richland until he purchased two adjoining
parcels that would become the final family homestead.
The first parcel contained 80 acres; it was purchased in
April 1844 and was in Section 8 of Troy Township,
Richland County; that section was assigned to Troy
Township, Morrow County on 01 March 1848.1 Since
this first parcel was landlocked, Justin purchased a
second irregularly shaped parcel containing 35.325
acres in June 1848. The north property line of the
smaller parcel was the south right-of-way line of the
Lexington-Bucyrus Road, providing access to the
closest community, the village of Lexington, Richland
County, which was 4.5 miles to the southeast.2 The two
parcels were joined at a common property corner. The
larger parcel served as pasture and crop land, while the
smaller contained the farmhouse, barn, other
outbuildings, and a farmyard.
Justin and Betsy raised eleven sons and one daughter in
Ohio. In addition to the six sons that are the subject of
this article, three sons died in Ohio before reaching the
age of 18, and two were farmers who raised their
families in Section 8, Troy Township. The daughter and
her husband likewise raised their family on a farm in
that section.
The First Five Carpenter Brothers
About 1851, the five eldest sons of Justin and Betsy
Carpenter began planning to relocate to southern Sauk
County in the new state of Wisconsin. Such a venture
must have been an intense topic of conversation in Troy
Township and Lexington as several local families were
known to have settled in that wilderness about the same
time.3
In anticipation of becoming pioneer settlers more
than 500 miles from Morrow County, brothers
Jeremiah, Jesse, and Daniel each married a local woman
between March and July of 1851. Two of the brides
gave birth to a child in 1852.
In late summer or early autumn of 1853, the five
brothers loaded a covered wagon, and the party of ten
headed west on the Lexington-Bucyrus Road before
heading north and west using trails blazed by those who
preceded them.

“The third race to occupy this territory began coming about 1808, or before. Bedford county, Pennsylvania, probably has the honor of sending Berlin its first settlers; these were the Markleys. Henry Markley came in 1808 and erected the first cabin in the township, upon the farm now owned by James McIntire. Mr. Markley was accompanied by John Brown, sr. Mr. Markley purchased one thousand acres of land… His family consisted of his wife, three sons, and two daughters, viz: Henry Markley, Jr., John, James, Mary and Amelia; all now dead. John Brown’s family consisted of his wife, three sons, John, Jeremiah and Thomas, and a daughter who married John Pinkley. None of these are now living.

COMMENT:
There are 3 Bethany Cemeteries in OH but only one in Athens county.
I called the caretaker and there is no William Carpenter listed as being buried there.
She belonged to the Missionary Baptist Church.
It is assumed she remarried but her grave has not been found.
Does anyone know how the death date was determined?
