Hi John and Sue,
I haven't found your Carpenter's given names in the limited information I
have? but sense they were from Herkimer County, there sure could be a
connection? do you have more inf?
John,
my Nathan Millington Carpenter born 1818 in Herkimer, was living with the
Clark Horner? family on the 1850, Van Buren Twp., Wayne CO MI. Census, as a
farmer,
Next found in 1860 Spring Arbor Twp. Jackson County, MI. where my great
Grandfather Hiram C. Carpenter was born in  1856,.
1870 found them in Newton Twp. Buchanan CO. IA. 1880 until death found
them in to New Boston Twp. Mercer CO. IL.
Hiram C. Carpenter married Cora A. Tarr in 1884, I found Hiram C. in Newton
Twp. Harvey CO. Kansas in 1885 & 1895, 1900-1945 Found Hiram C. in
Princeton, Ohio Twp. Franklin CO. Kansas,. Which is about 20 miles east of
Baldwin, Douglas CO. KS.?
Are there any Carpenters living in Douglas County Now?
I will keep checking?

Iris,
My name is John Carpenter, probably not the John you addressed your

was

the

laborer

>      On January 14, 1853 he married Rebecca Van Meter and in Ocotober of

Regiment History:
MICHIGAN

Ninth Infantry.

(Three Years)
T
he Ninth Infantry was organized at Fort Wayne, near
Detroit, and was mustered into the U. S. service Oct. 15, 1861,
with an enrollment of 913 officers and men. Immediately upon
its completion the regiment was ordered to Kentucky and was one
of the first Michigan regiments to report for duty in the
western department.

The field, staff, and line officers of the Ninth at
organization were as follows:
William W. Duffield, Detroit, Colonel. John G. Parkhurst,
Coldwater, LieutenantColonel. Dorus M. Fox, Lyons, Major.-----
,----- , Surgeon. Cyrus Smith, Jackson, Assistant Surgeon.

C. Captain, Charles V. Deland, Jackson. First

Curtis Purdy, Jackson.
D. Captain, John E. Smith, Lyons. First Lieutenant,
Daniel C. Moore, Lyons. Second Lieutenant, James N. Wallace,
Lyons.
E. Captain, Cyprian H. Millard, Linden. First
Lieutenant, Moses A. Share, Detroit. Second Lieutenant,
Stephen S. Barrows, Detroit.
F. Captain, George K. Newcombe, Owosso. First Lieutenant,
Samuel S. Bangs, Marshall, Second Lieutenant, Ephraim Marble,
Marshall.
G. Captain, George N. Chase, Detroit. First Lieutenant,
Mortimer Mansfield, Coldwater. Second Lieutenant, William A.
Hull, Coldwater.
H. Captain, Andrew M. Adams, Detroit. First Lieutenant,
Samuel A. Wiggins, Detroit. Second Lieutenant, Charles T. Fox,
Lyons.
I. Captain, William Jenney, Jr., Mt. Clemens. First
Lieutenant, Blake W. Hornbeck, Detroit. Second Lieutenant,
Alanson P. Dickinson, Romeo.
K. Captain, John A. Tanner, Fowlerville. First
Lieutenant, Thomas J. Conely, Jackson. Second Lieutenant, Lewis
V. Curry, Brighton.

In November 1861, the regiment was at West Point, Ky.,
where it assisted in fortifying Muldraugh Hill and building
roads and bridges. Detachments of the Ninth were sent to
Elizabethtown and other places from West Point, where their
presence was necessary to gain information and protect the
country from the enemy.
Colonel W. W. Duffield, having been
assigned to command the Twenty-third Brigade, Army of tile
Cumberland, Lieutenant Colonel John J. Parkhurst assumed
command of the Ninth and assembled his regiment at West Point,
where it embarked on the Ohio river and proceeded to Nashville,
where it arrived Jan. 23, 1862.

The regiment participated in the march through Kentucky
after the confederate General John Morgan and the Twenty-third
Brigade assisted largely in driving the notorious raider from
the state.

In June the Ninth formed a portion of a force of 5,000
troops under command of General Negley, and commenced a
movement to capture Chattanooga, Tenn. After numerous
conflicts with the enemy, Negley's troops arrived before
Chattanooga June 8, and after a spirited contest drove the
enemy out of the city. Not having a force sufficient to occupy
and hold the works, General Negley divided his forces and
placed them at strategic points in the vicinity.

In July four of the companies under Major Dorus M. Fox
were stationed at Tullahoma and the other six companies were
under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Parkhurst at
Murfreesboro. Here the six companies of the Ninth, together
with the Third Minnesota and a squadron of Kentucky cavalry
were furiously atacked by the confederate General Forest at
four o'clock in the morning of July 13, by a force of 2,500
cavalry.
The attack fell heavily upon the detachment of the
Ninth, consisting of about 250 men. The enemy rode with
reckless bravery into the camp of the Ninth, when a hand to
hand encounter took place, and after a prolonged struggle the
enemy was driven back and tile camp recovered. No support was
sent to the Ninth, though Lieutenant Colonel Parkhurst sent
messengers to tile commander of the post, calling for re-
enforcements and describing his desperate condition.
The
isolated position of the detachment of the Ninth furnished
ample opportunity to Forest to bring an overwhelming force
against it. The obstinate contest lasted from four a.m. until
one p.m. when with no prospect of aid, with one-third of his
men killed, wounded or captured,
Lieutenant Colonel Parkhurst
was most reluctantly obliged to surrender his command to the
enemy.
Lieutenant Colonel Parkhurst and his Adjutant Henry M.
Duffield were taken prisoners in this engagement, and the
former was held until Dec. 3 1862, when he was released and the
latter Aug. 15, 1862.

During the month of November the Ninth entered upon the
campaign under General Rosecrans, who was operating against the
enemy and culminated in the battle of Stone River and capture
of Murfreesboro. During this campaign and before the battle of
Stone River the Ninth was detailed by General Thomas as a
special guard at his headquarters and Provost Guard for the
Fourteenth Corps.

When the Union right was crushed at Stone River the Ninth
did most gallant service in checking the stampede to the rear,
and by firmly holding the Nashville pike tile disorganized
forces were stopped and returned to their commands. Major
General Thomas complimented Colonel Parkhurst and tile regiment
for the very important service rendered at this critical point
of the battle.
The regiment was engaged in provost duty at
Chickamauga, Ga., and by its prompt action gathered up the
stragglers from the commands that were broken up by the furious
onsets of the enemy and returned them to the firing line, where
they helped to repel the confederates.

Lieutenant Colonel Parkhurst was commissioned Colonel Feb.
6, 1863, and made Provost Marshall General of the Army of the
Cumberland with Lieutenant H. M. Duffield as his Adjutant
General.
The regiment passed under the command of Colonel
Wilkinson, and in November and December the Ninth was doing
provost duty at
Chattanooga.

Here the regiment veteranized, 306 of the men re-
enlisting, and were sent to Coldwater, Mich., and furloughed
for 30 days. After the expiration of the 30 days'furlough the
regiment left Coldwater Feb. 10, 1864, with 500 men and
reported to General Thomas and started on the Georgia Campaign.
It was on provost duty in all the battles between Chattanooga
and Atlanta and when Atlanta fell, did provost duty in that
city.

The Ninth returned to Chattanooga and then proceeded to
Nashville with General Thomas performing provost duty until
Sept. 15, 1865, when it was mustered out and returned to
Michigan, where it arrived on the 27th and was paid off and
disbanded at Jackson.

The regiment participated in engagements at Murfreesboro,
Tenn., July 13, 1862, Lavergne Tenn., December 27, 1862; Stone
River, Tenn., December 29 to 31, 1862 January 1 and 2, 1863;

Stone's River after battle report:

Report of Lieut. Col. John G. Parkhurst, Ninth Michigan Infantry,
including skirmish near Overall's Creek, December 31.

HDQRS. NINTH REGT. MICHIGAN VOLS. (CENTER),

FOURTEENTH A. C., DEPT. OF THE CUMBERLAND, January 4, 1863.

MAJ.: I have the honor to make the following report of the part taken
by the Ninth Regt. Michigan Infantry, in the recent advance of the
army and in the five days' battle before Murfreesborough:
On the morning of December 26, this regiment, as the provost guards
to the corps d'armee of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, marched 2
miles out from Nashville on the Franklin pike, and crossed over to the
Nolensville pike, and proceeded upon that road as far as the Edmondson
pike, a distance of 7 miles, and marched out 1 mile on the Edmondson
pike, and encamped for the night.

On Saturday morning the regiment, with headquarters train, returned to
the Nashville pike, and marched to a point 1 mile south of Nolensville,
and 17 miles from Nashville.

On Sunday morning the regiment marched across from the Nolensville
pike to the Murfreesborough pike, and encamped, with headquarters,
about 5 miles south of La Vergne, and remained there until Tuesday
morning, when the regiment moved out on the Murfreesborough pike to
Overall's Creek, about 2 miles in rear of our front, and established
headquarters for the general.

During the several days' marches the regiment picked up many
stragglers from the army in front and sent them forward to their
commands.

On Wednesday morning, about two hours after the commencement of
Wednesday's battle, I noticed many stragglers crossing the fields from
the direction of the right wing of our army, and sent out forces and
brought them in, until I had from 100 to 200 collected, when I
discovered several cavalrymen approaching with great speed from the
direction of our front, and very soon discovered that a large cavalry
force, together with infantry and a long transportation train, were in the
most rapid retreat, throwing away their arms and accouterments, and
many of the without hats or caps, and apparently in the most frightful
state of mind, crying, "We are all lost."

I at once concluded it was a stampede of frightened soldiers, and before
many had passed me I drew my regiment up in line of battle across the
road, extending on either side, and ordered my men to fix bayonets, and
to take the position of guard against cavalry. This was done with celerity,
and with much difficulty.
Without firing upon the frightened troops, I
succeeded in checking their course, and ordered every man to face
about. Within half an hour I had collected about 1,000 cavalrymen,
seven pieces of artillery, and nearly two regiments of infantry. Among
them was a brigadier-general.
The cavalry, or most of it, belonged to
the Second Brigade, and, if I am not mistaken, was commanded by
Col. Zahm. The infantry was from different regiments belonging to
Gen. Johnson's division, One colonel succeeded in escaping my lines,
and passed on toward Nashville.

From the reports made by these troops, I did not know but the enemy
were in pursuit in force, and, consequently, I organized the forces I
had collected and formed them in line of battle, on the crest of the hill,
the other side of Overall's Creek, planting the artillery on the left and
center.

In a short time Col. Walker came up from the rear with a brigade of
troops and took position on the left. After we had occupied this position
a short time, a small force of the enemy's cavalry appeared on the
opposite side of the creek and attacked our transportation train, which
I had directed to proceed moderately toward Nashville.
I directed a
pursuit, by a cavalry force, and about the same time Capt. Church,
of the Fourth Michigan Battery, and of Col. Walker's brigade,
opened a fire upon them, and they were soon dispersed, losing some
few of their men.

During the remainder of the day there were several attacks by the
enemy's cavalry, and they were as frequently repulsed, and with
considerable loss, by the cavalry force which I had stopped, but the
cavalry of the Second Brigade did not seem very determined in their
pursuit.

In the afternoon I was ordered by Gen. Thomas to take position with
my regiment on the south side of the creek, which I did, and then
collected a large force of straggling infantry, and which, during the
evening, were, most of them, returned to their regiments.

Late in the evening I was ordered to advance with my regiment to
Gen. Thomas' headquarters, near Gen. Rosecrans' headquarters,
which I did.

About 3 o'clock on Thursday morning I received orders to proceed to
Nashville with my regiment, in charge of headquarters train, and about
4 o'clock I moved with the regiment in charge of the train.
No casualties occurred on the march until about 1 o'clock, when, about
9 miles this side of Nashville, I discovered a general stampede in the
train in my rear, which was not directly under my charge.
I immediately
formed my regiment across the road and stopped the train and fugitives.
Very soon there were several cavalrymen came up and reported that the
train was attacked at La Vergne, about 6 miles in our rear. I succeeded
in checking the stampede and stopping the alarmed cavalrymen,
teamsters, and negroes, who had gotten up the stampede.
Among the
cavalrymen stopped was a Capt. Skinner, of the Third Ohio Cavalry.
I reached Nashville about 5.30 o'clock with my train, and the long train
in my rear, and pitched my camp on the side occupied previous to
leaving Nashville.
After I had my camp pitched, I received orders from
Gen. Morgan's aide to remove my regiment inside the fortifications
early the next day, which I did, and about 5 o'clock in the evening
received orders from Gen. Thomas to return to the front with eight
days' rations, and between 3 and 4 o'clock on Saturday morning I
marched from Nashville with my regiment with a small train.
When
about 9 miles this side of Nashville I rescued a lady, with a carriage,
horse, and servant, which a party of rebel cavalry had captured. The
cavalry fled on our approach, and I had no means of pursuit.

When I reached La Vergne I was informed by Col. Innes, of the
First Michigan Engineers, that a large body of cavalry were about to
attack his regiment, stationed there. I halted my regiment and prepared
to assist Col. Innes in his defense; but after waiting two hours for
their attack, I proceeded on my march to this place without any other
incident, and reached here last evening about 7 o'clock with the
regiment and train.
In stopping the rout which seemed to be prevailing among our troops
on Wednesday morning, my officers and men, without one exception,
behaved with great coolness, and are entitled to much credit for the
determined and successful effort in preventing a disgraceful rout of a
large portion of the right wing of the army.

I remain, major, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

J. G. PARKHURST,

Lieut.-Col., Cmdg. Ninth Michigan Volunteers.

Maj. GEORGE E. FLYNT,
Assistant Adjutant-Gen. and Chief of Staff.

Birth: 26 Feb 1863 Jackson County, Michigan, USA
Death: 14 Aug 1930 (aged 67) Davenport, Scott County, Iowa, USA
Burial: Mannon Cemetery, Mannon, Mercer County, Illinois, USA
Memorial #: 178718829
Bio:
Nora died at St. Luke's Hospital, Davenport, Iowa. The information on the death certificate is incorrect. Nora's father was Nathan Carpenter. Hiram was her brother.  She was born in Jackson County, Michigan not Millersburg and not buried in Aledo Cemetery. The family lived in Michigan  before moving to Mercer County, Illinois. This is documented. Nora was married to Aaron Day Reeves. Aaron died in an accident at Townsleys Brickyard in Aledo in August 1891. They had two small children Fred and Nellie. A third child Aarona  Mable was born 6 weeks after the accident in September of 1891. In 1894, she married Arthur Sweet. They had two children: Leonard died in infancy and Orville. Also, Nora had two other children not sure of birthdates. This is listed on the 1900 census. Not sure if the children were Aaron's or Arthur's. Arthur and Nora divorced. Nora went to work for a Mr. Young in Aledo, Illinois until he passed away. At her death, Nora lived in and owned her home in Aledo. Murphy Funeral Home in Aledo, Illinois handled the arrangements.  Any information about the two missing children who died in infancy please contact the Find A Grave contributor. The death year is different on the Tombstone and Death Cert. The Death Cert. showed 1863.

John Carpenter, one of the oldest residentsof Buchanan county, was born in Herkimer county, New York. He came to Iowa about twenty years ago and entered the farm upon which his widow now lives. It contains two hundred and forty acres of excellent land, though it was wild prairie when Mr. Carpenter came here, but by hard and industrious wok he succeeded in creating a pleasant home in what was a wilderness a few years before.
He mariied Mrs. Polly Williams, of New York, June 25 1869. Mr. Carpenter died in November 1873.
He was highly esteemed by all who knew him, being regarded as a most worthy citizen by his fellow townsmen.
He left a wife and two children to mourn his loss.
The names of the children are: George, born July 13, 1871, and John A., born July 31, 1873. John died in infancy.
We very much regret being unable to give a long sketch of this most wealthy man.

Mercury Contamination from Historical Gold Mining in California
By Charles N. Alpers, Michael P. Hunerlach, Jason T. May, And Roger L. Hothem
https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2005/3014/
Mercury contamination from historical gold mines represents a potential risk to human health and the environment. This fact sheet provides background information on the use of mercury in historical gold mining and processing operations in California, with emphasis on historical hydraulic mining areas. It also describes results of recent USGS projects that address the potential risks associated with mercury contamination.

Miners used mercury (quicksilver) to recover gold throughout the western United States. Gold deposits were either hardrock (lode, gold-quartz veins) or placer (alluvial, unconsolidated gravels). Underground methods (adits and shafts) were used to mine hardrock gold deposits. Hydraulic, drift, or dredging methods were used to mine the placer gold deposits. Mercury was used to enhance gold recovery in all the various types of mining operations; historical records indicate that more mercury was used and lost at hydraulic mines than at other types of mines. On the basis of USGS studies and other recent work, a better understanding is emerging of mercury distribution, ongoing transport, transformation processes, and the extent of biological uptake in areas affected by historical gold mining. This information has been used extensively by federal, state, and local agencies responsible for resource management and public health in California.

Gold Mining History
Vast gravel deposits from ancestral rivers within the Sierra Nevada contained large quantities of placer gold, derived from the weathering of gold-quartz veins. Gold mining evolved from hydraulic mining of unconsolidated placer deposits in the early days of the Gold Rush, to underground mining of hardrock deposits, and finally to large-scale dredging of low-grade gravel deposits, which in many areas included the tailings from upstream hydraulic mines.

By the mid-1850s, in areas with sufficient surface water, hydraulic mining was the most cost-effective method to recover large amounts of gold. Monitors (or water cannons, fig. 1) were used to break down placer ores, and the resulting slurry was directed through sluices (fig. 2). As mining progressed into deeper gravels, tunnels were constructed to facilitate drainage and to remove debris from the bottom of hydraulic mine pits. The tunnels also provided a protected environment for sluices and a way to discharge processed sediments (placer tailings) to adjacent waterways. Gold particles were recovered by mechanical settling in troughs (riffles) within the sluices and by chemical reaction with liquid mercury to form gold-mercury amalgam. Loss of mercury during gold processing was estimated to be 10 to 30 percent per season (Bowie, 1905), resulting in highly contaminated sediments at mine sites, especially in sluices and drainage tunnels.
...
Mercury Mining
Most of the mercury used in gold recovery in California was obtained from mercury deposits in the Coast Range on the west side of California's Central Valley (fig. 4). Total mercury production in California between 1850 and 1981 was more than 220,000,000 lb (pounds) (Churchill, 2000); production peaked in the late 1870s (Bradley, 1918). Although most of this mercury was exported around the Pacific Rim or transported to Nevada and other western states, about 12 percent (26,000,000 lb) was used for gold recovery in California, mostly in the Sierra Nevada and Klamath-Trinity Mountains.

Use and Loss of Mercury in Gold Mining
To enhance gold recovery from hydraulic mining, hundreds of pounds of liquid mercury (several 76-lb flasks) were added to riffles and troughs in a typical sluice. The high density of mercury allowed gold and gold-mercury amalgam to sink while sand and gravel passed over the mercury and through the sluice. Large volumes of turbulent water flowing through the sluice caused many of the finer gold and mercury particles to wash through and out of the sluice before they could settle in the mercury-laden riffles. A modification known as an undercurrent (fig. 5) reduced this loss. The finer grained particles were diverted to the undercurrent, where gold was amalgamated on mercury-lined copper plates. Most of the mercury remained on the copper plates; however, some was lost to the flowing slurry and was transported to downstream environments.
 ...
From the 1860s through the early 1900s, hundreds of hydraulic placer-gold mines were operated in California, especially in the northern Sierra Nevada (fig. 6). The total amount of mercury lost to the environment from placer mining operations throughout California has been estimated at 10,000,000 lb, of which probably 80 to 90 percent was in the Sierra Nevada (Churchill, 2000).

Research suggests mercury linked to dementia
New research by Northeastern University professor Richard Deth and academic colleagues in Germany suggests that long-term exposure to mercury may produce Alzheimer’s-like symptoms in people.
Deth also discovered a probable biological mechanism through which mercury can destroy neurological brain function in humans.
The findings were reported this month in a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
