15690. Abel Carpenter

E-MAIL: Tue, 09 May 2000 From: Dolores Brewington
John, here is my major problem;
The 1850 Lee County, Iowa census lists:
 CARPENTER,Abel        m   age 34     farmer     b. VT
   Mariah              f       29                   NY
    Hearit (Harriet?)  f        7                   IA
    Jerome             m        5                   IA
    Julian             m        3                   IA
    George             m        4/12                IA
    Elmira G.          f       19                   NY
The 1856 Lee County, IA census:
CARPENTER, Abel      m        43     farmer        VT
   Emerette Mariah    f        33                   NY
     Hariet           f        11                   IA
     Cephas G.        m         9                   IA
     Julia W.         f         7                   IA
     George           m         5                   IA
     William          m         3                   IA
     Samuel Ainger C. m         1                   IA
  Britt, Eliza        f        25                   NY
Samuel Ainger Carpenter m. Josephine Hayes 30 Dec 1880 in Ft. Madison,
IA. Samuel d. 26 Nov 1941, buried in Denmark IA Cemetery.
Wm. d. 30 Jun 1931, buried in Denmark Cemetery.
George was my grandfather. married in Northfield, MN, buried in Knapp,
WI.
I rec'd a letter from a lady who does research for Lee Co Historical
Soc. on demographics and specifically trying to decode federal censuses
multitude of spelling and transcription error.  She says, "I'm certain
you 'two' Abel CARPENTERs are the SAME - census takers did not go around
the countryside with one big ledger; they had some kind of 'clipboard'
to take notes which were then listed into the ledger - an extra
opportunity for errors.  It's nothing to trace a family from 1850 to
1860 and see some of them age 12 years, others only 8, names change.
Iowa's 1856 census was taken in preparation to rewrite the state
constitution but it was a notably sloppy work, at least in Lee Co.  If
you could see the Original Documents you would probably find Cephas
G(erome), Juliann= f (female).  Elmira G. at age 19 in 1850 would likely
have been a kid sister to live with another relative."  (by Ann
Atterberg, Feb. 2000)
Also in the 1850 census for Lee Co., IA:
CARPENTER, Daily       m         35         farmer     VT
    Ebe(Phebe)          f         40                    CAN
   *George              m         18                    IL
   *Nathan              m         16                    IL
   *Isaac               m         11                    IL
    Dianthia            f          8                    IL
    Eliza               f          4                    IL
(*Sons of Isaac W. Pierce & Phebe Baldwin Pierce Carpenter.  George, b.
1832; Nathan, b. 1834; Isaac, b. 1839).  Phebe and Daily Carpenter lived
in IL, IA and then on to Utah.
Daily died in San Juan Country and listed as the first person buried in
Piute Springs with a date of 1877 but no documentation.)  Information
came from Mildred E. Herring, LaJolla, CA. August 1997.
Now for my grandfather, George Sanford CARPENTER, son of Abel & Emerette
Mariah CARPENTER;
CARPENTER, George Sanford  b. 30 Dec 1850 in Denmark, Lee Co., IA

children.
 8.  A son, Jamie d. in infancy - no dates avail.
As far as carrying on the CARPENTER name there is just my brother's son
Gerald who had one son, Steven who is about 35 and still not married so
it looks like that line is going to die out.
Arthur CARPENTER had just one son who had children.  His name is Phillip
and he has three grown sons but I have not been able to find Phil or his
children.
If you have any questions, corrections, additions or just want to talk
please feel free to call or e-mail.  I hope this will be of some use to
you.  I need to get it entered into my Brother's Keeper!

Jonas G. Carpenter, mid 1800's Le Ray, NY
Posted by: Marcia Briggs (ID *****4947) Date: June 10, 2002    of 5832

Seeking information about the following family found on 1850 census, Jefferson Co., Le Ray, NY:

Jonas G. Carpenter, age 35, b VT
Betsey, age 27, b NY
Amos, age 4, b NY
Byron, age 2, b NY
Pamelia, age 3/12, b NY

I believe that Jonas was the son of Amos and Pamelia (Chaffee) Carpenter. He is living next door to Amos and his 2nd wife in Le Ray. Amos was b 1790 in Westminster VT the son of Abel and Sarah (Phippen) Carpenter.

Does anyone have more information on Jonas or his descendant?

7952. Shubael or Shubarl or Shubal Carpenter

Number 3789 on page 418 in the Carpenter Memorial. Residence, Stamstead, L. C.
He enlisted in the US Army, probably in the War of 1812 and was wounded. He emigrated to Ohio and his descendents are very numerous in the west; some of them are in New England.

Note: While the Carpenter Memorial has Shubal going to Stamstead, Lower Canada, he later went to Hamilton County, OH.  This makes me wonder if Amos also went to OH.

BIRTH:  Vermont and not New Jersey.  See State of Ohio Proceeding, image: RIN 42322 Shubael Carpenter Family info.jpg  Includes images A to F with info on father Amos.

RESIDENCES:  After serving in the War of 1812 he petitions for a pension and land in 1815. Then he moves to Illinois by 1817 where he received land and where his first wife died. By 1820 he remarries in Kentucky and moves just north to the very south west corner of Ohio called Hamilton County. He stays in Hamilton County until his death in 1844. His second wife Sarah gets his widow's pension.

MILITARY:
Served in the War of 1812.  Enlisted July 11, 1812 as a Private in Captain Burbank's Company, 5th US Infantry.  This is on his pension record. More info below. This record includes residences, marriage date, death of soldier and widows death.

Subject: Re: Certificate

Hi Casey -

It's a certificate for Daily Carpenter, the second husband of Phebe Baldwin, the parents of Eliza Jane Carpenter who married Jacob Wayne Harris, who had Phoebe Jane Harris who married William Thomas Dufur, who had William Jacob Dufur who married Willie Rosalie Rippy, who had mom, who had us.  So he's our 3rd great grandfather.  The certificate says -

"This certifies that Daly Carpemter is an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and has this day received from under our hand at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Ill., Oct 6th, 1840.  Joseph Smith, Jr.  -  R. B. Thompson, Clerk"

Here's a brief timeline of their lives -

[Daily was born Sep 7, 1795.]

Phebe, born Mar 2, 1810.

Her first husband, Isaac Washington Pierce, was born Jul 3, 1811.

They were married July 27, 1828.  He was 17 and she was 18.

Child #1 - Phebe and Isaac's first child, Amasa was born Dec 22, 1829, a girl.

The Church was organized April 4, 1830.

Child #2, George Henry Pierce, was born Jun 27, 1832.

Phoebe and Issac Washington were baptized Oct 1833.

Child #3, Nathan Pierce, was born Feb 2, 1834.

[Daily was baptized June 1835, He was 39..  They haven't met, yet.]

Child #4, Lucy Smith Pierce, was born Jun 27, 1837.

Lucy died Sep 13, 1838, one year and 2 1/2 months old as a result of the mob persecutions.

Child #5, Isaac Washington Pierce, Jr., was born Aug 22, 1839.

[Daily was ordained an Elder in Nauvoo Oct 6, 1840 and received the above certificate from Joseph Smith, Jr.]

Isaac died a martyr to the cause, kiiled as a result of the mobs against Mormons, Dec 28, 1841, Jacksonville, Morgan, Illinois.

Phebe Baldwin Pierce married Daily Carpenter Mar 13, 1842.  They had 4 children.

Child #1 - Diantha Orletta Carpenter, born Jan 5, 1843.

Child #2 - Eliza Jane Carpenter, born Sep 9, 1846.  We come through Eliza.who later on married Jacob Wayne Harris in 1863.

Child #3 - Eliza's twin, died at birth Sep 9, 1846.

Child #1, above  - Amasa, dies.  She died on Jul 11, 1847.  She was 17 1/2.

Child #4 - Phebe Sophronia Carpenter, born July 22, 1850.

12 Sep 1850 – 1850 Census, living in Division 28, Lee, Iowa.

Phebe Sophronia Carpenter died about 1 1/2 years later in 1852.

5 July 1852. Mormon wagon train departure date. Daily, family and brother-in-law leave Iowa for SLC, Utah in the James C. Snow Company (1852). See -http://www.lds.org/churchhistory/library/pioneercompany/0,15797,4017-1-279,00.html
Nathan B. Baldwin [This is Phebe's brother and family]
Sarah A, & Julia Baldwin & Nathan Baldwin, Jr.

9-10 October 1852 - Arrival in Salt Lake Valley.

Daily and Phebe separate sometime upon arrival in the valley.

4 Apr 1857 - Phebe, George Henry, Nathan and his new wife Emma Hart are all endowed in the Endowment House in SLC (Salt Lake City).

Also on the same day, Phebe is sealed to her first husband, Isaac Washington Pierce.  Her oldest son by Isaac, George Henry Pierce, is standing in as proxy for his dad.  Her son Nathan marries Emma Hart.  All on the same day.  Oh yes, and Brigham Young performed the sealing.  So that means we also come through the sealing line of Isaac Washington Pierce, besides the bloodline of Daily Carpenter.  A double blessing.  We do research on both lines.

Phebe dies at 55 on Jan 6, 1865 in Deseret, Millard, Utah.

Daily is endowed in the Endowment House, SLC, on Aug 18, 1866.

Daily dies on Oct 26, 1879, at the age of 84, in Piute Springs, San Juan, Utah.

Amazing stuff isn't it?  They gave all they had for the restored Church.  That's our heritage - and more.  We have other pioneers.  I wonder if we can do any less than they for the cause they gave their lives for.  We'll take our turn one day and step into that great world of the living spirits of the departed and associate and mingle with our righteous ancestors.  How else can we claim our place beside them except by going and doing likewise in our own small sacrifice of giving our all.

The Elder's certificate was issued to our ggg grandfather Daily Carpenter by the prophet Joseph Smith.

Posted on: Millard Co. Ut Biographies Reply Here: Surname: Pierce, Walker, Carlson, Warren, Brownell, Mace ------------------------- Black, Susan W. E. Early LDS Membership Data (Infobases, 1995): Comments: Isaac Washington was a patriarch in the Juarez Stake of Zion, and a prominent business man of Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. His ancestor Michael Pierce was one of the three brothers (Captains Michael and William, and their brother John) who came to America between the years 1620 and 1645. They made a number of trips across the Atlantic Ocean in various ships, bringing immigrants from the Old World to the New. In 1629 Captain William Pierce commanded the renowned "Mayflower" with a company of immigrants from Holland. Captain Michael lost his life in defending the colonies of America from attacks of Indians. The parents of Isaac Washington Pierce, the subject of our sketch, were reared and married near Ogdensburgh, NY. They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the year 1833, and emigrated from Kirtland, Ohio, to Far West, Missouri, in 1837, from which place they were driven out by a mob of men opposed to them because of their religious faith. They went to Jacksonville, Illinois where their son Isaac was born. Isaac's only sister, Lucy Ruth, died in 1838, during the mob violence of those times. His father was the first of his family to join the Church, and died as a martyr for his religion, December 28, 1841, because of the Missouri persecutions and privations heaped upon him. He left a widow and four sons, namely, Amasa, George Henry, Nathan and Isaac. While crossing the plains, en route from the Missouri River to Utah, with his mother and brothers, Isaac was baptized. He arrived with his mother's family in the Salt Lake Valley October 6, 1852. He was present at the dedication ground-breaking ceremonies of the Salt Lake Temple in 1853, and during its construction gave of his time and means, aiding in erecting that beautiful building. In the spring of 1854 the family moved to Ogden, Utah, where young Isaac made a sled and hauled wood from the canyon; he also made ax-handles and sold these for food for the family. He went to Payson, Utah, where his brother, George, lived and helped guard the town from Indian raids at the time of the so-called "Walker War." He attended school in the Third and Eighth Wards in Salt Lake City. He became a member of the 42nd Quorum of Seventy. He was a Pioneer settler of Deseret, Millard County, Utah, in the spring of 1858, and helped to put in the first water dam at Deseret the same year. His mother was the first white woman settler at Deseret. He was a ward teacher in Deseret, and in the spring of 1862 he crossed the plains as a teamster, going from Utah to the Missouri River to meet the L.D.S. emigrants. He drove four yoke of oxen from Deseret and returned with every one of them in good condition. John R. Murdock was the captain of his company. On this trip he met the two Carlson sisters, who later were to play an important part in his life. On the trip he traveled 2,500 miles by ox team. In Levan, Juab, Utah, he acted as acted as presiding Ward teacher, home missionary, Sunday school teacher and a member of the School of Prophets from 1869 to 1871. Places of Residence: Levan, Juab, UT Glenwood, Sevier, UT Church Ordinance Data: Baptism Date: Aug 1852 Place: Platte River Officiator: Solomon Warren Ordained Deacon Date: 1855 Officiator: Brownell Ordained Elder Date: April 4, 1857 Ordained Seventy Date: June 14, 1857 Place: Fillmore, Millard, UT Officiator: Hyrum Mace Temple Ordinance Data: Endowment Date: April 4, 1857 Temple: Endowment House, Salt Lake City, UT

It is located at the junction of Highway 2 and Highway 34, along the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. It lies south of the Assiniboine River, at an elevation of 380 metres.
