Altany Curtis Carpenter
Birth: 23 Feb 1793 New York, USA
Death: 4 Jan 1875 (aged 81) New York, USA
Burial: Hillsdale Rural Cemetery, Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York, USA
Plot: ?
Memorial #: 31147725
Bio:
Married Nathaniel Elwood (buried in Steuben County) then Lyman Carpenter∼Research by J. Kelsey Jones:
Altana Curtis married 17 June 1812 Nathaniel Brooks Elwood born 30 Mar 1792 bpt 30 Aug 1795 with brother Samuel in Westport, Connecticut son of Abraham Elwood and Sarah Johnson who later resided Scipio, Cayuga County, New York. His brother Samuel m. Altana's sister, Harriet Elwood.
Nathaniel was baptized 29 Oct 1816 in the First Baptist Church of Christ in Oxford, Chenango County, New York. Later, in that same year, Altana Elwood was baptized 1 Dec.
It is further related in the church minutes that Brothers Joel Prentice, Nath B. Elwood, and Willmot Munson Jr., were appointed as messengers of the Association, 15 Aug 1818.
On 17 Apr 1819, Nathaniel B. Elwood related to the church that he had a grievance with Brother Seth Stratton, "had taken the first and second steps of labor and wished assistance of the Church." At a meeting, two days later at Brother Stratton's house - "Br Elwood produced complaint against Br Stratton for neglect of reading the word of God and praying in his family. Brother Stratton said he had been faulty and wished forgiveness."

Nathaniel and family were twice enumerated in the 1820 census, in Oxford and in the neighboring town of McDonough. In the 1820 census of McDonough he is refered to as Brooks Elwood. They perhaps moved during that census year and thus were enumerated twice.
In the 1820 census of McDonough, they were enumerated beside his brother, Samuel Elwood. Nathaniel's name appears on the 1821 assessment roll of McDonough with 50 acres and the same through 1825.
They removed again to the neighboring town of German and were enumerated there in 1830. They removed from the town of German in 1846 with some of their children to the town of Addison, Steuben County, New York, where Altana's brother, Solomon Curtis had removed to many years earlier.
Nathaniel died 16 Oct 1847 55y 6m 19d buried Maple Cemetery, Addison, Steuben County, New York.

Altana married 19 Oct 1848 Lyman Carpenter as his second wife, Altana raising the younger children of Lyman's first marriage to Almira Cook daughter of Levi Cook and Elizabeth Calkins.
Lyman born 5 May 1796 son of Charles Carpenter and Lucy Darling was reared in Deerfield township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and succeeded to the homestead farm. Lyman and Almira were the parents of twelve children.
Almira died 15 Apr 1846 44y 2m 30d. Lyman and Altana resided on the Carpenter farm in Deerfield township, which was later sold when they removed to Brookfield township where they were enumerated in 1860.
They removed to Farmington township where they were enumerated in the 1870 census, residing near Altana's daughter, Ursula Seeley.
Lyman died 11/19 Feb 1873 (recorded in two separate entries in Elwood records) and Altana died 4 Jan 1875.
No marker of Altana's burial found, but presumed to be buried at Addison, New York with Nathaniel.

Mrs. Louise Rice of Addison, New York, a descendant of Willis Elwood, had in her possession a date book and other miscellaneous papers, which were in the possession of earlier family members.
There are dates of birth for both Nathaniel and Altana, their marriage and deaths. Also, dates of birth, marriage, and death for all of their children.
Nathaniel's death is recorded as 18 Oct 1847, a difference of two days from his marker. There are other existing records which agree with the dates contained within the date book for the Elwood family members to confirm their accuracy.

DEATH COMMENT:
Jedediah Carpenter's will was signed on 16 Sep 1857 and the MN Territorial Census was on 21 Sep 1857.
"The 1857 Minnesota territorial census was mandated for statehood qualification and apparently included fictitious names in seven counties to boost the population."    https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/1058/
One would assume Jedediah Carpenter would be on this special census since every name counted.  But, he was not found on those records.

CENSUS: 1857 Minnesota Territorial Census - Nothing close to Jedediah Carpenter, but 50 other Carpenters found in that census.

LAND:
General comment regarding "patentee" - a person or organization that obtains or holds a patent for something.
Jedediah Carpenter held land at his death and that land was parceled out per his will. Then portions of such land were later sold or reassigned.  This is why land with his name on it is listed after his death. JRC

FIND A GRAVE:  Carpenters in Olsted County, MN - 17 found
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/search?lastname=Carpenter&locationId=county_1364&includeMaidenName=true
FYI - Nothing close for a Jedediah Carpenter in MN except for a J.D. Carpenter (1872-1957).

NOTE:
Olmsted County, MN was founded on 20 Feb 1855.
Olmsted County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population is 162,847. Its county seat and largest city is Rochester.
Olmsted County is part of the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The Wisconsin Territory was established by the federal government effective July 3, 1836, and existed until its eastern portion was granted statehood (as Wisconsin) in 1848. Therefore, the federal government set up the Minnesota Territory effective March 3, 1849.
The newly organized territorial legislature created nine counties across the territory in October of that year. One of those original counties, Wabasha, had portions partitioned off in 1853 to create Fillmore and Rice counties.
*** Then on February 20, 1855, portions of Rice, Wabasha, and Fillmore counties were partitioned off to create the present [Olmstead] county, with Rochester (which was also platted that year) as county seat.
The county name recognized David Olmsted (1822-1861), a member of the first territorial council and the first mayor of St. Paul.
The county boundaries have remained unchanged since 1855.

By 1855 Olmsted County had become the land of promise (the Government land came into market that year) and much of the rich new land was taken up, most of it for homes by movers from older regions, but much of it by speculators, to be held for sale at higher prices.
...
The wagons often had on their covers inscriptions giving their destination, generally coarsely traced and, maybe, with an attempt at wit, as likely as not, as badly spelled as by Artemus Ward or as ordered by President Roosevelt. For several years, until the coming of the railroad, there were few days in the summer that these nomadic outfits were not to be seen on the road, and as many as from one hundred to three hundred have passed through Rochester in a single day. Some of the assumed best families of the Eastern States trace their genealogy back to the steerage of the emigrant ship. The future aristocracy of Olmsted county may run theirs hack to the landing of a prairie schooner.
...
There was no homestead land then, the homestead law not passing till the year 1862, after a struggle of years in Congress. There have been very few homestead claims made in Olmsted county and they of late years.
The early settlers bought their land by preemption, taking claims, generally of one hundred and sixty acres and paying the Government a dollar and a quarter an acre for them, or in most cases, turning in, in payment, a soldier's land warrant issued for services in some war and sold by the soldier for cash that he preferred to the land the warrant would have entitled him to.
Around every Government land office were the signs of men calling themselves land agents or bankers, with land warrants for sale. The United States Land office for the district including the southern tier of townships of this county was first at Brownsville, in Houston county, and then at Chatfield, and for the rest of the county at Winona and later removed to St. Peter.
...
The winter of 1854-55, the first experienced by the pioneers, is spoken of by them as one of extraordinary severity. With houses miles apart and homes primitively poor, and few of the conveniences of our later civilization and lack of money added in many cases to their isolation, the period before their farms had become self-sustaining was truly one of great privation. The first three or four winters were seasons of scarcity and poverty.
The winter of 1855-56 is reported to have been colder than any since. There is said to have been ninety days in which the snow did not thaw and it is believed that if there had been any thermometers in the country their record would have lingered below zero.
The winter of 1856-57 was one of deep snow-drifts covered with a hard crust that made roads impassable and deer could be killed with clubs. Wood had to be hauled on hand sleds.
The county government shared in the general poverty of the first few years of settlement and county orders were at a discount in the market till 1862, when the treasurer began paying them promptly at par. The Rochester Post, in noticing that fact, stated that Rice county was the only other county out of debt. In 1857 Olmsted county orders sold for from 40 to 70 cents on the dollar.

Hi John -
I'm glad you haven't changed your email address and happy that you responded.
Since we last corresponded, I have been accepted into the Mayflower Society. I submitted
my application in 2012, connecting to the John Howland family. . . . . . Carpenter. . . connection.

It took my some time to identify the Jedediah Carpenters and I typed a

had a problem with Jedediah.
Anyway, thank you for responding.

8299. Sarah "Sally" Carpenter

Number 8546 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 796.
She had at more than 6 children, the first six born in Middlebury, PA and
others in IL.  She moved to IL previous to 1830 and had other children born
there.

NOTE:
IF she was born in 1813 and by 1830 she had SIX children? If she had a child a
year, she would be 9 years of age when she married.  If two of the births were
twins, she would be 11.  If all were twin births, she would have been 13.
OR the time she had SIX children and moved to Illinois (ie 1830) is wrong.
LIKELY she was born about 1803!

I can get back to Middlebury, Tioga, Pa.  1850 census.  Betsy is listed
as dwelling 116, family 120.  Wife of Stephen A. Thompson.  Civil War
records for Martin Van Buren Thompson (her son) gives us this
information also.  How do I connect to the right Carpenter family.  Same
census list Jedediah Carpenter (age  74) and wife Sarah (age 72) as
dwelling 121 family 125.  Wouldn't you expect this to be her father.
Also same census has Samual Carpenter also in dwelling 121 he is age 26
(grandson of Jedediah?)  James Carpenter (age 45) is dwelling 122 family
126  Jedediah Carpenter (age 48) is dwelling is part of Locey, dwelling
85, family 89.  (Alonzo Losey m. Maria or Mariah Carpenter)  Elizabeth
Carpenter Thompson is age 43.  Looks to me that Elizabeth age 43, James
45, and Jedidiah 48 are all brothers and sister.  How do I prove this?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
