Biography of Oliver Carpenter Aspinwall, by Nebraska State Historical Society:
Oliver Carpenter Aspinwall was born in Brookfield, Massachusetts, in 1835. He was a descendant of colonial farmer, Peter Aspinwall.  Oliver left Massachusetts at an unknown date and arrived in Liberty, Gage County, Nebraska in the mid 1880s, where he kept a store with his third wife Lena Kuetzing Aspinwall.  They had two children together: Nan Jeanne [sometimes known as Jennie] and Frank.

When Oliver Aspinwall died in April 1903, Lena carried on in the store until 1915, when she and son Frank moved to Seward, Nebraska.  During the early 1920s they relocated again, this time to Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Lena died October 17, 1937.

Nan Jeanne Aspinwall Gable Lambell was born in New York on February 2, 1880.  She lived in Liberty, Nebraska for most of her early years.  Later publicity during her career would state that she was raised on a cattle ranch in Montana, though it seems probable that this story was designed to enhance her stage persona [see the book, In Genuine Cowgirl Fashion: Nan Aspinwall Gable Lambell and The Image of the Cowgirl in Wild West Entertainment, 1880-1930, by Mary C. Higgenbotham for a brief discussion of Nan's early life and the Aspinwall family in Nebraska].  By 1899, Nan was performing as an oriental dancer, "Princess Omene."  Sometime in 1905 or 1906, she began appearing as the "Montana Girl," an expert horsewoman, lariatist and sharpshooter.  Though there are no records of how or when they met, by 1906 she was billed along with husband Frank Gable as a "Lariat Expert."  By at least 1908, the couple was performing with the combined Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Pawnee Bill's Far East Troupe.  Nan apparently filled roles relating to her Montana Girl persona, in addition to performances as Princess Omene in the Far East part of the show.  On a bet from Buffalo Bill, who later backed down, she rode on horseback from San Francisco to New York and back in 1911, supporting herself with exhibitions of roping and riding in small towns along the way.  Later she and Frank had their own vaudeville show, Gable's Novelty Show, until 1929 when Frank Gable died.

Little is known of Nan's life after the death of her first husband.  She married again, to Al Lambell, who also predeceased her. About 1960 "Death Valley Days" did a television show about her cross-country ride, for which she was a technical advisor. She died on October 24, 1964.

Frank Aspinwall was born on October 7, 1887. He grew up in Liberty, Nebraska.  For a time following the death of his father in 1903, he lived in Falls City, Nebraska.  He married Georgia Denhinger on November 9, 1914. In about 1915, he moved with his mother, Lena, and his wife to Seward, Nebraska, where he ran a garage.  He moved to California in the 1920s, and received a Law degree from Southwestern University, Los Angeles, in 1928.  Soon afterward he passed the California Bar Examination, and for the rest of his life he practiced law in California. The following research supplements another memorial.

Daily Morning Journal and Courier (New Haven, CT) May 5, 1903:

OLIVER C. ASPINWALL, FORMER
SUPERINTENDENT OF THE WHEEL COMPANY.
Oliver C. Aspinwall, a merchant of Liberty, Neb., died in Liberty April 30, and will be buried in New Haven, his former home.  He was formerly superintendent of the New Haven Wheel company, but left New Haven in 1883.  He was sixty-eight years of age.  He was a member of Trumbull lodge, Masons.  He leaves one son, a resident of Indianapolis, a sister, Mrs. Levi Sherman of Brookfield, Mass., and a brother, Sumner D. Aspinwall, who has been for forty-six years with Phineus Jones & Co., of Newark, N.J., who is also prominent in Masonry.
Mr. Aspinwall was related to the famous steamship men of that name.  He lost all of his property in a fire last winter and it is stated that this brought on the illness that caused his death.

-------------------------------------------------------------

From Massachusetts Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 (records of Brookfield):
Oliver; born May 20, 1835 to John and Betsy Aspinwall [Oliver is listed among a group of children born to John and Betsy]

First marriage:

Oliver C. Aspinwall (age 23; wheelwright; born Brookfield to John and Betsey Aspinwall) to Caroline A. Doliver (age 20) on January 1, 1859 at Worcester, Worcester County, Mass. [Caroline's maiden name is found as both Doliver and Dolliver.  Her parents were John and Caroline]

The 1860 census of New Haven, New Haven County, CT lists:
Oliver Aspinwall (age 25) with wife, Caroline (age 21), and son, John (age 1).

[A family tree on Ancestry.com lists a Caroline Augusta Dolliver [born December 22, 1838 Brookfield, MA; died November 13, 1903 Worcester, MA.   A Massachusetts death certificate exists for Carrie A. Dolliver Knox, age 62.  She was born at Worcester, MA to John B. and Caroline Dolliver.  She died November 13, 1903 Worcester, MA and burial was indicated to be at Worcester (no cemetery named).  She was the widow of A. Harrison Knox.]

Second marriage:
Possibly to a Jennie Grodski [in early 1870s according to family tree found on Ancestry.com]

Third marriage:

The 1880 census of New York City lists Oliver with spouse, Lena ('Lina' in the census):
Oliver C. Aspinwall (age 50; b. MA; parents also born MA; employed by N.N. Wheel Company) with wife, Lina (age 23; born Switzerland) and daughter, Olivia (age 4 months; born in February in NY).

This third marriage was eventually in the news.  Apparently the relationship was 'complicated.'  His third wife, Lena Kuetzing Aspinwall, instituted divorce action in the district court of Gage County, Nebraska, on February 7, 1885.  On January 15, 1886, the parties agreed to settle and dismiss the case. [Nebraska Reports; vol. 22; July term of the Nebraska Supreme Court, July 1887; Aspinwall v. Sabin]

An item in the McCook Tribune (McCook, Nebr.) of February 4, 1886 brought to light the possibility that the marriage was not official:

The Beatrice Express says the somewhat notorious case of Aspinwall vs. Aspinwall, which has been in the courts for several months past, has come to an abrupt conclusion.  It was the suit of Lena Aspinwall vs. Oliver Aspinwall, for divorce and alimony, on the ground of cruelty, in which the defendant responded that they were never legally married.  About a week ago both parties filed a stipulation dismissing the suit and entering into an acknowledgement that they did the same of their own free and voluntary act and deed.

A marriage between Oliver and Lena is recorded in Jackson County, Missouri:

Oliver C. Aspinwall (age 58,resident of Gage County, Nebr.) to Lena Kuetzing (age 32, of Jackson County, MO) on April 26, 1886 in Kansas City, MO.

Lincoln Journal Star December 27, 1901:

Beatrice, Neb., Dec. 26—A disastrous fire totally destroyed four business houses at Liberty this morning, the general merchandise stores of O. C. Aspinwall and S. C. Norris… a millinery and barber shop.

Beatrice Daily Sun (Beatrice, Nebr.) February 13, 1909:

Objections have been filed in county court to the final report of Eugene Mack, administrator of the estate of O. C. Aspinwall, deceased, by the heirs to the estate, Mrs. Aspinwall, her son and daughter.  They object to certain charges made by the administrator for his work of settling up the estate.

---------------------------------------------------------

Census records also reflect some turbulence in the marriage of Oliver and Lena.

1885 census of Liberty, Gage County, NE:
O. C. Aspinwall, age 57; b. MASS; occupation: merchant; no spouse or children listed with him

1885 census of Beatrice, Gage County, NE:
Jane Aspinwall; 30 b. Switzerland; married; no occupation
Nellie Aspinwall; 5 b. NY
Clara Keutzing; 23 b. SW (sister of Jane)

1900 census: Liberty, Gage County, NE:

Oliver C. Aspenwall; 70 b. MA; merchant
Lena; 42 b. July 1858 Switz.; milliner; married 24 years; mother of 6 children
Frank; 24 b. NE
