Subject: Carpenter Cousins (Additions/Correction)
Hello,
I came across the Carpenter Cousins Project on Facebook and might have some information regarding the gentleman, Peter Carpenter, listed in Group 3 as:
7443 M vii Peter Carpenter-58804
This Peter is my third great grandfather. Back in 2010, I started doing my own research on my father's line of Carpenters and made my way back to William Carpenter who came to the US on the Bevis in 1638.  I was doing this as an 80th birthday gift for my father.  I live in Massachusetts, so it wasn't difficult to verify much of the early information I found, both on the Ancestry and Family Search websites.  I spent time physically in both the Rehoboth, MA and Putney, VT historical societies and genealogical libraries.  I also spent time in Salt Lake City at the Family History Library.
I am not sure how I could get you the information I have, or if you are even interested.  All of my research was given to my father in 2012 in print and electronically.  Sadly, I did not keep electronic copies for myself.  Dad passes away 8 years ago, and I have no idea what ever happened to the thumb drive I gave him.  All I have are some hard copies, but not even all of those.
I can tell you that the listing for Peter's date of birth in the Carpenter Cousins timeline is incorrect, as I did view the record of his birth when I was in Putney.  He was born Peter Monroe Carpenter, May 14, 1818 in Putney, VT to Asa and Abigail Carpenter.  Peter was given his middle name after Asa's mother Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Monroe.  Abigail was Asa's second wife.  According to the records I viewed, both Asa and Abigail would have been 55 years of age in 1818 when Peter was born.  Obviously, that presents questions that we can't answer. Maybe someone recorded her birthdate incorrectly.  Or perhaps Sarah was Peter's biological mother and Abigail adopted him (I have no idea how common that would have been back then.)  I found records that Abigail was born in 1763 in Dummerston, VT, but no further information.  She was the same age as both Asa and his first wife Sarah.  I could find no evidence of Sarah's death or of a divorce, so I do not know when Asa remarried except that it was sometime between the birth of Hubbard and Peter ( if Peter's birth records are correct).  I believe this to be the case because I found evidence that Hubbard was born in 1807, not 1795, and that his mother was Asa's first wife Sarah.
Peter married Sarah McLaughlin in 1844 in Millbury, MA and headed west.  I have much information about Peter's life, including his obituary that confirms his date and place of birth.
My conjecture as to why he went west is that he didn't have much family to keep him in New England.  His grandfather, Peter, died the same year he was born. (This Peter did, in fact, move to Putney to live with his son Asa.  I was able to confirm that he died in 1818 in Putney.)  Asa died in 1824 when little Peter was still 5 years old.  His nearest sibling, Hubbard was 11 years older, and though I couldn't find the date his mother Abigail passed away, she would have been in her early 80's if she was alive in 1844.
At any rate, I don't know if any of this is useful, but I have more.  Much of the information I verified after 1790 was with census records, as well as state and local tax records.
It was fun to find the Carpenter Cousins, because it further verified my work.  I descend from the line:  William, William, Samuel, James, Stephen, Peter, Asa, Peter, Rollin, Riley, Leslie, Leslie.
This last Leslie was my father, who has sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons alive today!
I must say this genealogy work was fun and emotional.  When I came across Peter's obituary, I had learned so much about him and had spent so much time chasing him down, that I cried when I read it!  I felt like I knew him.
Enough from this old woman!!  Enjoy your day, and let me know if you have any comments or needs that I can help with.  I appreciate all the year's of work that has clearly gone into the Carpenter Cousins Project!!
Best,
Sherri (Carpenter) Dungan

Hello John,
I'm sorry it's taken so long to get back to you.  Medical issues kept me from traveling to Vermont to do research.  I did eventually hear from both the Dummerston Historical Society and the Windham County Historical Society.  Both stated that they have few documents and what they do have are in disarray.  I did some back and forth with the Putney Historical Society and they found a record that might help show that Peter Monroe 176849 was the only child of Asa 15212 and Abigail 177416.  I've attached the copy, but it's not original.  This apparently is a compilation of vital records that was put together in 1900. There is a listing of Peter's birth to Asa and Abigail, a listing of Asa's death, and one of Peter's marriage to Gratia Fuller later in his life.   There is also an original record of a property deed transfer from Peter to a George Smith in the early 1840's, which would be just prior to his moving to Wisconsin.  I didn't attach this because it's not helpful to prove lineage.  I am going to try to access the Vermont state archives.  Somehow, I need to prove Peter's parents are the correct  Asa and Abigail.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.  You may not hear from me until after the New Year, but I will let you know if/when I find anything pertinent to this search.
Best,
Sherri
