8939. William B. S. Carpenter

William B. S. was born in Delaware,,OH, in 1828.  His father
was a cripple early in life and his mother died young so he had
to educate himself.  He taught school for a number of years till
he saved money enough to put himself through a medical college.
He graduated at the Cleveland medical college in 1853.  In 1856
he emigrated west with his young wife and baby son. They spent
the winter of 1856 and 1557 in northern Iowa suffering great
hardships from the cold.  In 1857 he came to ,KS and located
in Lime , taking up claims and practicing medicine through
the country.  This was just at the time of the "Border Ruffian
war" which led up to the war of the Rebellion in 1861 and Lime
County was the scene of some of the most bloody massacres of
that bloody time.  In 1861 he enlisted in the army as a private
but was soon promoted and in a few months was elevated to major
and surgeon of the 5th cavalry.  He served three years under
General Powell Clayton, present minister to Mexico, was mustered
out in 1863 at Leavenworth where he remained and entered the
practice of medicine.  He died Dec. 16, 1893 after becoming one
of the leading physicians of that place.  He was a member of the
,KS State Medical association and for fourteen years was
physician to the ,KS state penitentiary.2  SOUR S203

ALFERD , ALFORD , CARPENTER posted by Mike Hill on Wednesday, September 22, 1999
Looking for information on ALFORD / ALFERD CARPENTER. Alford Carpenter was born about 1785 in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. He is listed in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census records living in Macoupin County, Illinois. Alford may have been related to a JOHN CARPENTER (b. in Ohio about 1814). John was the father of 5-6 children including sons John SETH and CHARLES R Carpenter. John died in Iowa about 1853. Johns son Seth is enumerated as living in the Alford Carpenter household in the 1860 census. What is the connection between Alford and John? Are they father and son? Brothers? Cousins? Does anyone know this family?

PIONEER'S SUDDEN DEATH
Norman C. Carpenter Succumbs to Bright's Disease, Saturday

Mr. N. C. Carpenter, an old and respected  citizen of our city, died at his home here last Saturday afternoon, quite suddenly, at the age of 73 years. He had been a resident of our city for a number of years and had been actively engaged in the enterprise and welfare of our city and was recognized as one of our most substantial citizens.. He had been afflicted with kidney trouble for some time and had been confined to his home the greater portion of the winter. The Spring weather last Friday tempted him out, however, and in his desire to call on a number of his old friends, he exposed himself and hastened a relapse which caused his death the following day.
His father, Alfred Carpenter, came to the territory of Illinois in the year 1817, from the state of Ohio. He came to Ohio from the state of Massachusetts and was a descendant of the early Puritan stock of New England.
Alfred Carpenter's father, grandfather of the deceased, served in the Revolutionary war and gained the rank of Captain which rank he held at the close of the war. Alfred Carpenter himself served in the war of 1812 and after the close of that war came west with the thousands of other hardy pioneers and with them helped to give character to the great North West Territory that is now the most favored part of our wonderful country.  He settled near Jacksonville, Ill., and held two shares in the first school, or at least one of the first schools ever built in that town, but it soon burned. In 1820, or thereabouts, Alfred Carpenter moved to a farm in Jersey county. The farm has since furnished the site for the city of Jerseyville. Here he ran a cross roads tavern that was known as "The Red House." It was here that Norman Carpenter was born and lived until he was six or seven years old. In 1837 his father moved from Jersey Co., to Macoupin Co., and settled about 8 miles east of Carlinville. He lived in Macoupin county for over forty years. He married Sophia Banion, of Girard. Six children were born to them, of whom two now survive, Edward W., of Carlinville, Ill., and William G., of St. Louis; three died in infancy and Alfred R., who is remembered by many here, died from the result of an accident a little more than six years ago.
In the early part of January, 1875, his wife died and in 1882 he moved to Waverly, and here he has passed the remainder of his life. In the spring of 1884 he married Elizabeth Penrose. She now survives him.
He united with the Congregational church of this place in June 1884 and has remained a faithful and consistent member since that time. He was a kind man, a good husband and one of the best of fathers. He was born in this state, grew to manhood here, and never lived outside of Illinois. The state that nourished him now claims him back again.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Monday afternoon, March 14, at 3 o'clock and were in charge of the Rev. W. S. Bugbey, pastor. The house was well filled with a host of sorrowing  relatives and friends who mourn the loss of a true friend, a kind neighbor and an esteemed citizen. Interment was made in East cemetery.

Waverly Journal, Nov. 1917

Elizabeth A. Carpenter, whose maiden name was Elizabeth A. Beckett, was born in Morgan County, Illinois, on August 30, 1834, and died November 10, 1917, at the advanced age of 83 years, 2 months and 10 days.
She was married to Thomas Penrose at about the age of 23 years, and lived happily with him until about the year 1880 when death took him. She was married to Norman C. Carpenter on May 28, 1884, at Waverly, and has lived here continuously since that time. Mr. Carpenter died in this city in March 1904, and Mrs. Carpenter has continued to live in the old home since his death.
She united with the Congregational church in Waverly in 1884 and has been a faithful and consistent member of that church since that time, ever faithful to her duty and living the life of a true Christian. She was a regular attendant at church even when her physical infirmaties made it an arduous task upon her strength to go. She last attended church on Sunday, October 24th, less than two weeks before her death.
All of her long life has been spent in our midst, living but little, if any of her life outside of Morgan county and for the last 34 years a resident of our city. She was known and loved by all and has left a host of friends to mourn her death.
Funeral services were held in the Congregational church Monday, at 10:30 a.m., in charge of the pastor, Rev. S. C. Schaeffer. Interment was in East cemetery.

Subject:   concerning Ira Carpenter and family
I believe Mary Eliza Carpenter is her  name, not Mary Matilda.   I can not remember if I had sent you a previous query, but I feel I might have.  I know have seen census that I believe give the name of my ggg grandparents as Ira and Charlotte Carpenter.
I believe this is my gg grandmother who  married Albert Andrew Sleeper.
I finally found her on the 1870 Franklin Co. OH Sharon TWP. page 760 August 1870
250 250 Carpenter, Ira    53       M   W        Farmer     4000   2470   Ohio
                  Charlotte       43       F    W        Keeping House                Ohio
                 Flora               15       F    W        Attending School            Ohio
                 Mary E.          13        F   W        Attending School             Ohio
                 Lodoria          11        F   W        Attending School             Ohio
                 Martha            9         F    W                                                  Ohio
                 Annie  ?          6          F   W                                                   Ohio
                 Celia               4         F    W                                                  Ohio
                 Albert             1          M  W                                                  Ohio
In this same census:

                 Gobin             24        F   W        Keeping House                Vermont
Sleeper, Albert 18       M   W        Tin Smith  ,Jrn.                New Hampshire
( he is a long way from home in New Hampshire)
Mary Eliza was only 15 when she married in December 25, 1872.  She was born in 1857.
We do  not have the first names of the ggg  grandparents, but the family records from Great Uncle Thor Myers show as follows:
Grandpa Carpenter was born March 18, 1818 and lived 81 years.
Grandma Carpenter was born March 25, 1828 and lived 92 years.
Somewhere along the line  someone thought her maiden name was Savidge.  My grandmother said she didn't think that was right, but  she couldn't remember the right name.  I have not found this to be true.  I now think she was Charlotte Vroman.
Mary Eliza had 9 children, of which 6 lived to adult hood.  She died soon after her 9th child.  He also passed away soon after. Mary E. died 1891/2.  I have several census from Kansas showing the family, and two death times.  One from family records, and one a copy from some county records.  I also have Albert Sleeper in several town registers as owning a tin shop.
They are in Sedgewick Co, KS to start with, but later are listed in Reno Co. KS (very close neighboring counties)
My g grandmother Flora Murilla Sleeper was her 3rd child.  Flora and her brother Harley the 5th child lost their hearing from a childhood illness.  Both attended the Deaf School in Witchita Kansas.   I have a picture of Mary Eliza.  And I have two pictures of Carpenter ladies from Westerville, Ohio. ( Interesting Ira's sister Abigail went to deaf school and another sister married a professer and lived in Westerville.)
I believe that I have found my GGG grandparents.  Ira and Charlotte Carpenter.
Sincerely, :-) Barbara Long

Charlotte Cordelia Curtiss Broman

NAME: Charlotte Cordelia Curtiss /VROMAN/ or VRoOMAN.
