Subject: Benjamin CARPENTER - SC (maybe NC?) Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999
From: "J. R. Carpenter"
I am looking for any information on Benjamin CARPENTER (born ca 1770-80,
died ca 1836-1840 Dale Co. AL). According to oral tradition in one branch of
descendants, his name was Samson (perhaps Samson was his middle name?).
Benjamin Carpenter married ca 1806 to Milly --?--. They resided in SC ca
1808-1816, in Dale Co. AL in 1830, and bought land on 5 Jan 1836 in Dale Co.
AL. Milly and children resided in Dale Co. AL in 1840 and in Coffee Co. AL
in 1850. No further mention of Benjamin after the land sale that I've seen.
His son, my ancestor, Sampson A. CARPENTER (born ca 1816 in SC), married ca
1838 to Nancy MAYBERRY (born ca 1817 AL). They resided in Coffee Co. AL in
1850 and 1860. There is an established MABRY line in Union Co SC, coming
from Surry Co VA but through the Warren Co area of NC (near Nash Co). My
Nancy may be from a Franklin Co GA branch of the Mabrys.
Benjamin's family may have been in NC before SC, but that is unproven. I
thought at one time that his father was Thomas "Jack" of Nash Co NC, but I
have not been able to prove it. There were some PA Dutch Zimmermans who came
to middle NC in the 1750s, eventually moving south until in Old Tryon Co,
with some of this line being buried as Carpenters in Blacksburg SC. I have
been unable to prove any descent from these people as well.
I have info on Benjamin's descendents, if anyone is interested.
Thanks,
Rick Carpenter.CENSUS: 1790

Was this the Jane Carpenter noted in the 1870 Census of Vernon Precinct,
Christian county, KY in 1870? Page 19. Jane was living with Peter.
The Jesse Carpenter who is found in the household of David and Catharine Given
in the 1850 Braxton County census is placed here, but not proven. He is
logically a nephew of Jeremiah, Jesse et cetera. See father's notes.

Other than Elijah C. Carpenter was the son of Daniel and Matha (Marlar) Carpenter, no other ancestry is given.
This family was Baptist and Daniel farmed in Old Tishomingo, now Prentiss county, MS.
Sources for his family include: Family Bible, Census Records, Marriage Records of Tishomingo, Alcorn and Prentiss counties, MS.
Terry Lee Carpenter states: "Please correct the line to show that neither Moses Carpenter nor Daniel Carpenter has a proven parent, and Allen Marlar is not proved to be the father of Martha Marlar."
While Terry Lee believes this line ties into the Solomon Carpenter line he has not proven the connection.E-MAIL: ----- Original Message -----

Subject: Re: FTDNA test ...
John,
I can comment on 5853, which is of great importance to me -- it is me. The line as shown on the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA project web page is:
** Nathaniel Carpenter-625 b. 1668/1669
***Joseph C. Carpenter-5312 b. 1693
**** Solomon Carpenter-5330 b. 1714/1720
***** Solomon Carpenter, Jr.-31373 b. 1745/1750
****** Unknown Carpenter-65975 b. 1784
******* Daniel Carpenter- 66005 b. 1810
******** Elijah Carpenter-66004 b. 1847
********* Walter Carpenter-66030 b. 1886
********** Alive
*********** FTDNA Kit # 5853I would "correct" the above to this:
** ?Nathaniel Carpenter-625 b. c1668-1669
*** ?Joseph Carpenter-5312 b. c1693
**** ?Solomon Carpenter-5330 b. c1714-1720
***** ?Solomon Carpenter, Jr.-31373 b. c1745-1750
****** Daniel Carpenter- 66005 b. c1800
******* Elijah C. Carpenter-66004 b. 1847
******** Walter L. Carpenter-66030 b. 1886
********* Warner H. Carpenter b. 1921
*********** FTDNA Kit # 5853This shows where there is conjecture about the line, removes the middle initial C. from Joseph
Carpenter-5312, and removes the Unknown Carpenter-65975 born c1784. Joseph Carpenter-5312 did
not have a middle name that is documented anywhere in original records - the attribution of the middle name
Coles to this Joseph is an error that first appeared in print in the 1980s and has been propagated by rote
copying. Unknown Carpenter-65975 is removed because there doesn't appear to be an additional generation
between Solomon Jr. and Daniel. Solomon Jr. married comparatively late in life by the standards of the day
- he was approximately 30-34 years of age at his marriage in 1784 - so Daniel would have been born at
about the 16 year point in the marriage, which would place him as the 6th to 8th child (estimating a child
was born an average of every 2.5 years to a married couple in those days). This is within expected norms
for that era and location. The reason "correct" is in quotes is because I cannot prove this line is indeed correct. We have an
excellent oral family tradition and some circumstantial evidence supports the line as shown,
however, it remains unproved. The only truly certain facts are these:- Joseph Carpenter-5312 came from New York colony to western VA in about 1748. However, his parentage is
speculative, not proved, though some circumstantial evidence supports the possibility that Nathaniel
Carpenter-625 was his father. I am doubtful of this connection. If you dig into the documentation of the
reputed connection, there is almost nothing there but unsupported statements dating back into the 1970s.
This gets into more than I can explain in a short space - it would take several pages to discuss the
details of this one proposed link in the lineage.
This is one reason the Y-DNA study has been of such great interest to me.- The first certain link in this line, i.e., one for which I have indisputable documentation, is the
father-son link between Daniel and Elijah. From there on back, there is significant doubt for discussion. The link between Joseph and Solomon Sr. is another one I am highly doubtful of - there is significant
evidence that Solomon Sr. was a brother of Joseph Sr., rather than a son, and the suffix "Sr." was due to his
being older than a coexistent Solomon. For details on this, see the paper Raquel Carpenter Sonnenberg and I
authored, which is on the CE CD. This paper was based on independent professional research done by a
respected genealogist whom we hired to research the line, as a result of a long-standing disagreement
between me and pretty much everybody else (including Raquel's father who was a family historian) over the
reliability of past interpretations. The independent professional agreed with me - the line is most likely
not as it has been represented for the past 30+ years. Exactly how it should be pieced together is still in
question - and Y-DNA results are crucial to resolving that question.I am still very actively researching my line, but have not made a lot of progress in the past 10 years
because very little new data has come to light. Part of the problem is a lack of data - Daniel and his
father Solomon Carpenter lived so far out on the fringe of the frontier that there are almost no
institutional records, and all the family has to go on is oral tradition - no family Bible or other written
evidence has yet been uncovered. The repetition of common names, particularly Solomon and Joseph, has
made sorting out the lines very difficult. Recruiting more people to join the Y-DNA project is also
important - one may match my line closely and give me a vector to follow.I have also been accumulating records of the southeastern NY families, in particular Nathaniel
Carpenter-625. Once I have enough to start delineating family groups, I hope to find out whether
Joseph Carpenter-5312 was related to Nathaniel or not. There is a much longer story, but I've already gone on
too much - suffice it to say that now that I have seen the Y-DNA profiles, I believe my line has a more
distant relationship to the Providence line than previously believed. How to present this is now the
question, and I would appreciate your feedback based on your expert knowledge of what the Y-DNA data
indicates. I have no problem with my profile being removed from the group it's currently in, and if the
lineage should be abbreviated to stop with Daniel Carpenter- 66005, that is alright with me too.
Accuracy is my foremost concern. Regards, Terry

John,Years ago, in the late 1980s, I corresponded with a descendant of this line through James' brother Samuel A. Carpenter, who thought Solomon Carpenter and Elizabeth Poer were Samuel A.'s parents, but her story was not consistent, and she had only oral tradition for most of it. If her basic story is correct, a descendant should test into Group 2A. YDNA is possibly the only hope for determining whether there is any truth to the tale -- not much recorded evidence has been found.Terry

John,
I wish I knew who had that Bible. That would definitely fill in the gaps on
my tree. I do have all of Solomon and Elizabeth's children in my tree, but
had never had any proof of Solomon and questioned it. Cynthia B. Carpenter
married Isaac Haptenstall. According to her death records (from Greenbrier,
VA) that I found on Ancestry. It lists the father as Jno. And E. Carpenter.
That raised some doubt in my mind. It could be that whoever provided the
information did not know since Solomon had been estranged from the family.
And, I have had problems finding what could be him on census records. I did
go back to the 1850 census record and found 2 or 3 Samuel Carpenters in
North Carolina with an Owen Carpenter living near one of them. I created a
tree that was private and unsearchable trying to piece Solomon and Owen
together and go forward, but gave up on it since I had nobody else to relate
to them.

John, Rhonda, Glenda,
I looked back at my correspondence from Anne Carpenter Kinsey, and she implies that the family Bible was in the possession of descendants in Mississippi who were descended from Solomon Carpenter through son James Alexander Carpenter whose daughter Georgianne I. Carpenter married Newton J. Stafford. Georgianne's and Newton's gravestone is on Find A Grave, Memorial # 53099576. She was always a bit vague about where the Bible actually was. The two children she mentions as telling her about the Carpenters are James Newton Stafford and his twin sister Nancy Isabell Stafford. Both are now deceased -- see Find A Grave Memorials 53099580 and 53099579. Anne is about 89 years of age -- she was born in 1925. In 1987 when I first corresponded with her by mail, her address was 1178 Ginger Drive, Mobile, AL 36693. I lost some of the letters in a move overseas in 1990 -- one box of books and papers got lost along the way and the earlier letters were in it, but I have one from later in 1990. I corresponded with her briefly by e-mail in 2006, but she didn't share any new information about the family Bible. It would be wonderful if someone could find that family Bible to verify what is in it.

Subject: RE: Carpenters - another related lineage found
Good morning everyone,
I too am familiar with Annie Carpenter Kinsey. I corresponded with her quiet frequently about 4 or 5 years ago. She has nothing in computer software, only on paper. I have made numerous attempts to get more information out of her without any success. She is one of the cousins that stated Solomon Carpenter and Elizabeth Poer were married and divorced. She has never mentioned a family Bible to me. Only that she had at one time shared information from Ray Carpenter that does/did live in Mobile as well.
Ray Carpenter did share with me what he knew about the ancestry back around 1981, providing names back to Solomon and also a couple of photos that he had of William Hinton Carpenter and Kathryn “Kate” Hanson Carpenter. Again, Ray never mentioned that a Bible was in existence. My deceased husband was ill for quite some time and with working full time, I placed my genealogy on the back burner. That was pre-internet days…
The most that I gathered from both of them is that Solomon set fire to a trunk full of memorabilia and papers after he and Elizabeth divorced and that any significant evidence was burned in the trunk.
I guess if there is a way to discover the children of Newton and Nancy Isabell Stafford, that would be my best option for trying to locate the Bible.
I have created a Facebook group for the Carpenter family and I hope that by recruiting more Carpenter’s that it should give light to what direction to go in.
I sincerely appreciate all of the help that everyone has given me. I guess that comes from us each being passionate about our family history.

Thank you so much for this compilation of Carpenter’s. There are some (living ancestor’s) that I did not have in my tree. My original tree has most of these people along with the citations included. My original tree includes both my paternal and maternal ancestor’s.
...
My husband and I are leaving on Wednesday morning for Oklahoma to see his son graduate from boot camp. Upon our return, I plan to make a trip to Mississippi and visit Nollie Wilbur Carpenter. He seems to have a lot of knowledge and should be able to provide some useful information.
With everyone’s help, I have learned that there is a Carpenter Family Bible out there and that Judy inherited it. I am attempting to find out who Judy is and will try to contact her and obtain a copy of the recordings in the Bible.
Without the help of you, Glenda and Terry I would still be in the dark.

The author does not concur with many reputable Carpenter family historians
on the make-up of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Hamm) Carpenter's dozen children.
Many list a Rosina (RESINA) Carpenter, who married John Gilpin as one of their older
daughters. It is far more likely that this Rosina Carpenter is part of the
Nicholas and Christopher Carpenter (nee, Zimmerman) lineage.
