It is worthy of note, too, that the original list beam check marks, indicating that the taxes were not only assessed but paid, that the authority of the local officers was respected, though the ties that bound them to a national government were dissolving. This obedience to local home rule was characteristic of our ancestors. In throwing off British authority and establishing a new government they guarded against anarchy, and in the articles of association, signed so generally six months before this tax wan levied, they had pledged themselves not only to resistance to England, but to the "preservation of peace and order" among themselves.

Susan or Susannah Thompson

Died age 65.

E-MAIL: Mon, 6 Mar 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
Hello All:
Re-studying the 1790 census in Orange County, I note a Susanna Carpenter
listed as a head of household in Town of Goshen, with 3 males over 16, 2
males under 16, and 4 females.  Susanna is listed 2 line below Isaac, 7
lines above Increase, so pretty clearly right in the same neighborhood.
Does anybody know (or strongly surmise) who this Susanna was?  she could
conceiveably be the daughter of John #24...but only if she never married
(else she wouldn't still be named Carpenter).  She could be the widow of
Isaac... but Isaac is still alive! what's up? Robin.
She was the widow of Daniel - This Susannah Thompson! JRC

E-MAIL: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
Thanks, John, for the answer w/r Susannah Carpenter in the 1790 Orange
County census (being widow of Daniel #296).  As soon as I saw your answer I
looked her up, and kicked myself for not having spotted it.
Here are three further notes on that info:
       1.  I am a little skeptical of ABC's CM assertion that Daniel's wife
was Susan Thompson of CT.  The reference in the will is clearly to
"Susannah."  That's quite possibly just a usage change, but also quite
possibly one of ABC's lookarounds for someone with similar name to fit into
a slot.
       2.  It is interesting to note the 1790 OC census tabulation says
this household had 3 males aged 16+, 2 males aged 15-, and 4  females.  Your
listing of Family 4580 shows one extra female and two too few males.  I
suppose maybe daughter Susannah #863 might have been living there and
counted in the census with her husband, and maybe a son too.
       3.  The daughter Charity is strangely missing from mention in
Daniel's will, although she would be 9 years at the time.  Do you have any
knowledge (or guess) of where the info for daughter Charity came from?
Robin.

E-MAIL: To Robin from John R. Carpenter.
Dear Robin,
1) First female child named Susannah.  It was not uncommon to call one Susannah
Susan or vice versa.  We need to take everything with a grain of salt until
proven.
2) The extra female may be the spouse of one of the sons. Daniel was probably
married by then, even though not mentioned in the CM!  He is listed as being
married 1808.
The two missing males over 16 may have been the spouses of Sussanah and Sarah.
I assume Elinor at age 30 already had her household.
Daniel's will (per the CM) does not mention grandchildren.
It does make sense that the eldest son is staying at home to help a ailing
father.  The sons-in-law helping out is possible too.
3) The easiest explanation is that Charity died before the will was written in
Jan 1789.
In 1790 the children were about ...
Elinor age 30*
Sussannah age 28* married 1781 but no grandchildren mentioned in will.
Daniel age 27* eldest son
Sarah age 25*
Ruth age 19*
John age 15* second son
Robert age 14* youngest son
Charity was deceased - not mentioned in will.
* = mentioned in will.
Now a question for you!
**** = question about the birth or is it CHR date or were they twins?
Or one adopted, or from a previous marriage of spouse?  OR???

E-MAIL: 20 Mr 2000
Well, well, well...
Very unusual to bear a child just barely over a month after having borne
a prior.  My first notion is to question the data.  What is the source of
these birth dates?  Knowing the source would bear great weight with me.
Next thought...suppose for a moment that my skepticism (about
Susan/Susannah being the same person is) is a valid doubt.  If ABC nabbed
the wrong person, and if that person had a known birthdate, it would/could
be in conflict with alleged siblings.  This is exactly the kind of detail
about which ABC was notoriously cavalier.
Next possibility--and I guess the "simplest"--is that the year was
somehow mis-transcribed somewhere along the line.  One of the 1763s might be
1762 or some other year.  Again...makes me wonder what are the sources?
Robin.
*****************
Dear Robin,
Of all the possibilities ... all are valid.  Unfortunately, Amos B. Carpenter
failed to cite his sources.
But what sources did he use?  This would take tracking down the original
records and do a full investigation.
We can do 2 things.  1) Cite the discrepancy or 2) Do something about it.
Since I am working on the Carpenter CD Project, I am going to cite the
discrepancy - like the hundreds of others found!
I like your style.  Question and make logical conclusions based on the
reasonable.  Keep up the good work!
Let me know what you find!
Sincerely, John R. Carpenter.

my Carpenter family lived and died in Orange county and I have no record that would put them in Monroe County. Many of Increase's family members are in the Ridgeberry Cemetery and it doesn't seem sensible to me that he would be buried in such a distant location from the family. I believe your record is for a different Increase Carpenter. But I will forward this on to my main Carpenter researcher to see if we have a serious misstep in our records.

Hi John:
Thanks for your response(s)re Increase #297.  Maybe we'll turn up
something new to understand this family.  We'll see.
As for my query about Increase as a Patriot, I was referring to some
prior email message...not suggesting any new info of my own.  In fact,
that's why I was asking; I wondered whether you had info on it.  So no, I
can't cite on it.  I guess the only source is the Mendon burial info... which
begs the question as to whether this is the same Increase.  I'm thinking not.
Back in Orange county, I note that Increase #297's wife Jane is said to
be Jane Allison.  I don't take that as certain, but one source is RGC's
notes in OCGS files.  In my view it deserves a note in your compilation as
"likely" or "said to be" or something like that.
Robin.

Died age 29.

707. Judge John J. Carpenter

Number 300 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 83.  Birth is 1745 not 1730.
Family on page 152 (#129)  John Carpenter, Jr.
George B. Carpenter of Chicago made a corrective note on page 834 of the
Carpenter Memorial (1898) that the 23 Feb. 1745 birth date was correct.  The CM
gives 3 June 1730 and Feb. 1745 on page 83 for this John.  The 3 June 1730 date
is speculated as an earlier John Carpenter in that family who died as a child.

The following is OCRed from the book above. Paragraphing added for ease of use.
It is probably this John of Haverstraw, N. Y., who represented Orange County in the Colonial Assembly in 1778, and he was also Judge at one time in Orange County.
He is called " John the Distiller." He moved into Washington Town, north of Albany, N. Y., and went into the distillery business (which was considered honorable business in those days). and accumulated much property. He was a man of note, held many important offices and at one time was a member of the Assembly of New York.
He d. February, 1800, at Jamestown, N. Y. He was a merchant and a prominent business man.
We find in the Journal of the Provincial Congress. Vol. 1, page 309, that " Feb. 19. 1776. Mr. Covenhoven informed Congress that a person on the 'Asia' is indebted to John Carpenter: that said John Carpenter requests permission to go on board the 'Asia' to obtain a bill of sale of a slave or some security for said debt. Mr. Covenhoven moved that a permit be given to John Carpenter. Jr., to go on the 'Asia' to obtain security. Ordered that John Carpenter or John Carpenter. Jr., be permitted to go."  *
(On page 223.) "April 27. 1776. Recommends Henry Van Renssalaer, and John Carpenter as proper persons to erect and carry on the manufacturing of gunpowder and recommends a place at or near the saw-mill of John Carpenter as a proper place for building the same. The said John Carpenter in person and the said H. Van Rensselaer applied to Congress for the sum of L1,000 each in behalf of themselves and partners etc."
The powder-mill was in Salisbury in the precinct of Cromwall, a part of the original precinct of Goshen. Previous to this, Goshen was divided and the part set off was called Cromwall.   <---------- See MORE2: below.
The Carpenters of Salisbury and Cromwall who signed the pledge to defend the States against the British. were citizens of Goshen. proving that they were loyal to American rights. The names of the Carpenters who signed the pledge were John. John, Jr., Elijah, Benjamin, Timothy, Noah and William.
A letter dated Cumberland County, Westminster, N. Y., Feb. 1, 1776, to Provincial Congress. from Benjamin Carpenter, Chairman of County Committee. announces nomination of field officers. among whom was Benjamin Carpenter, Esq., Second Colonel. (Prob. No. 309.)
end OCR.
(In case you fuss with such things, the Orange County town "Haverstraw" has a typo (missing S), and "Cromwall" should be Cornwall. The spellings above are from the Carpenter Memorial. Per George Carpenter)

Grandson Sands Coe Carpenter wrote that this John Carpenter built and appropriated for the Hall at Philadelphia historically known as CARPENTER'S HALL for the use of the Convention that formed our Nation.

* "The HMS Asia was a 64-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by Thomas Bucknall and launched on 3 March 1764 at Portsmouth Dockyard. She participated in the American Revolutionary War and the capture of Martinique in 1794. She was broken up in 1804."
"Asia saw early service in the American Revolutionary War, as a transport vessel for 500 Royal Marines sent to New York City in 1774 to quell rising tensions among the local population. She arrived in New York Harbor on 4 December and remained there until later in the month when she joined a flotilla commanded by Admiral Richard Howe. But on 1 January 1775 she's part of V. Admiral Graves' North American Squadron, listed under command of Cpt. Geo Vanderput.
Returning to New York Harbor, Asia supplied protection for the merchant ship Duchess of Gordon, which Royal governor William Tryon had established as an ad hoc office in October 1775. He feared arrest by the rebels if he remained in the city.
Asia was the ship on which Tryon and Loyalist Mayor David Mathews devised a plot to assassinate George Washington. Thomas Hickey, one of Washington's Life Guard, was executed for this plot. %%%

COMMENTARY:
John R. Carpenter (JRC) of the Carpenter Cousins Project notes that the name John Carpenter was one of many so named during this time period. Whether or not it is the John J. Carpenter-13065 noted here is in question.  JJC-13065 father was deceased about 1755 and clearly before 19 Feb 1776 which is the date of this record. His son John Coe was not born until 1781. Kathryn Dahl noted this causing this commentary.
So which John Carpenter was the John Carpenter who went aboard the HMS Asia? No doubt many John Carpenters are confused with each other.

Kathryn Dahl supplies the following link and details regarding a John Carpenter and the saw mill converted to a powder mill.
The Congress papers Orange County, April 1776 which you and I are both citing say: John Carpenter's sawmill, not grist mill, in the precinct of Cornwall, not Goshen, near Greycort not Murderer's Creek. The location is described below. Greycourt Creek is also called Cromeline Creek. I have done a deed study concerning the lot described below, which had belonged to a John Carpenter of Cornwall- Powder Maker.  If you read you will see Powder was produced for the revolution at this location in Craigville. I believe John of Lumberland is John of Cornwall, Powder Maker. I have followed the data. If you are interested I can share my deed study.  Thanks for all your info -Kathryn

The following is OCRed from an image Katheryn supplied in April 2024.
Craigville. -A small manufacturing village, romantically situated on Greycourt creek, 1%N-here the public road leading from Washingtonville to Chester crosses the creek, and about five miles south of Washingtonville.
Though little has been done in the various departments of manufacture since the death of the Hon. Hector Craig, the great patron of the place, after whom it was named, .yet we are informed that Mr. Barret Ames, a son-in-law of Mr. C., with a laudable zeal and patriotic motives, is deeply engaged in restoring the village to its former activity in manufacturing operations.
To the name of Mr. Craig is added ‘ville,’ from the Latin "villa” a village.
At this place during the Revolution there was a forge and powder mill.
The property passed into the hands of Mr. James Craig, the father of Hector Craig, who in about 1790 commenced the manufacture of paper, the first of the kind in the county, which was continued by his son for many years after his death.
Mr. H. Craig, for a few years, dressed Hemp by water power, without previously rotting the article ; but it was found on being tested, that the staple of the plant was injured, perhaps by being kept too long bound up; and heated in the green state, and the process was discontinued. The raising of hemp went instantly down in this county. We do not know that the process has ever been renewed or improved upon.

Page 522: Regarding 1775 Tax roll.

The Presbyterian Church of Goshen executed a certificate of incorporation May 19, 1784, in which the trustees named …
The paper was signed by Saml. Carpenter and Reuben Hopkins.
There is ample evidence of a collateral nature to show that the Church of Goshen was organized as early as 1721.

For some reason not now apparent, the above certificate of May 19, 1784, was not considered sufficient, as another one appears in a few months, executed Dec. 7, 1784. The meeting effecting this organization was held at the meeting -house, and was called by Benjamin Gale and Samuel Carpenter, two of the elders of the Church. The trustees chosen were Benjamin Gale, John Carpenter, … James Carpenter …

Page 630:
Vincent Matthews was active in promoting settlement. His name appears upon the roll of attorneys as early as 1741. He sold of his tract 1500 acres to Lewis DuBois, of New PaItz. On this property DuBois erected a tavern, and it was kept by 'Zach-arias DuBois before the Revolution and during that struggle.
The mill which Matthews built he subsequently sold to John J. Carpenter. In 1776, Mr. Carpenter, associated with Hon. Henry Wiener, made powder there under a contract with the State. Henry Wisner, Jr., with the Phillipses, had another powder-mill at Phillipsburgh, Wallkill.
As Blooming-Grove was a part of Cornwall from 1764 to 1799, we obtain the name of settlers prior to the Revolution mostly from the records of Cornwall, and from the list of signers to the Revolutionary Articles of Association. Prior to 1764 the territory of Blooming-Grove was a part of Goshen Precinct, the records of which are lost. It is believed the following memorandum includes the name of nearly every permanent settler before the Revolution. Others may, however, be found in the general list given in the chapter upon Cornwall, to which we refer.

Page 633: - One of the people associated with the last paragraph above.
John Carpenter was doubtless the man to whom Col. Vincent Matthews sold the early mill at Salliebury. Benjamin, Timothy, Elijah, Noah, John, Jr., and William are also mentioned before the Revolution.

COMMENT:  Regarding the creek cited last paragraph and the change of its name.
Per Wikipedia.
Moodna Creek is a small tributary of the Hudson River that drains eastern Orange County, New York. At 15.5 miles (25 km)[1] in length from its source at the confluence of Cromline Creek and Otter Kill west of Washingtonville, it is the longest stream located entirely within the county.

Most early records name the creek Murderer's Creek. One theory holds that "Moodna" is a corruption of the Dutch word moordenaars, meaning "murderers."

Writer Nathaniel Parker Willis, while living in Cornwall, near the creek's mouth, in the mid-19th century, popularized the name "Moodna."

EARLY SETTLERS.
Vincent Mathews seems to have been the first settler according to the record. He bought the Rip Van Dam Patent, August 22, 1721, and built a grist mill at the place since known as Salisbury. He named this estate "Mathewsfield." Thomas Goldsmith came next, about ten years later, and he took the Mompesson Patent. He built a house on the north bank of the Otterkill, now known as the "Walnut Grove Farm," near the present Washingtonville. Edward Blagg also settled upon this tract, known as "Blagg's Clove" about this time. Mathews sold his mill to John J. Carpenter, which was turned into a powder mill under a State contract in 1776, when under the kindling fires of patriotism the demand for powder became very active.
...
NOTABLE EARLY RESIDENTS
A little further along the way lived Henry Wisner, the elder. He and his son of the same name were makers of powder for the Continental Army at Phillipsburg, between the highway as it now stands and the grist mill near by. Traces of the old raceway and mill can still be seen. Another on the opposite side of the stream, and one at Craigville, operated in conjunction with John Carpenter, were also erected by Henry Wisner. The Sons of the Revolution arranged some years ago to mark the site of the Phillipsburg powder mill by an historical tablet.

Henry Wisner stood foremost among those who advocated the independence of the colonies. He represented Orange County in the Continental Congress which declared that "these States are, and of right ought to be, free." His son Gabriel, hardly past his majority, was slain in the slaughter of Minisink. On the 16th of August, 1774, Henry Wisner was chosen as one of the delegates to represent Orange County in the Continental Congress held in Philadelphia in September of that year. The election was by the committee of the county held at the house of Stephen Slot and the purpose was for the delegate to attend at Philadelphia "to consult on proper measures to be taken for procuring the redress of our grievances."

In April, 1776, Henry Wisner and John Carpenter received the recommendation of the Orange County Committee as proper persons to build a powder mill "at or near John Carpente's saw-mill, near Grecourt." It was on Cromeline Creek, at the place now called Craigsville, seven miles east of Goshen. When completed in May it passed into the hands of John and Colvill Carpenter.

Hi John,
I've attached a document from 1772 Lib C pg 358. John J Carpenter, Merchant of Goshen, Deceased. Wife Jane, Micheal Jackson and Hezekiah Howell jr. Executors. selling to John Thorne and Robert Brown. I've underlined the lines in the deed highlighting the sale of the Grist Mill which John J bought from Vincent Matthews on Murderer's Creek.
The John J of Albany who died in 1800 (aka John J. C-13065) is not the John J (aka John J. C-21916) who owned this Mill. Unfortunately there are two John J Carpenters, Merchants.
Let me know what you think,
Kathryn

E-MAIL: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 From: "Marcia Buffett"
Dear John:
I recently came by the following information:
Philip Schuyler of the Town of Carlisle, Schoharie Co., NY together with
his son, William, settled in the Town of Lake Pleasant around 1836. Philip
was perhaps son of Philip S. and Cynthia Carpenter Schuyler, daughter of
John Carpenter who owned extensive Adirondack lands aquired from Jonathan
Lawrence on Dec. 21, 1790. The greater part of these lands were released to
the heirs of Timothy Green on April 8, 1827.
On March 10, 1834 Philip and Hanna Schuyler then of Carlisle, sold to their
son, William Schuyler, 155 acres of land in lots 119 and 121 of the Oxbow
Tract on the south side of Oxbow Lake. On Aug 23, 1837, William and Betsey
Ann Schuyler returned the land to his father.
Marcia Buffett.

and HARRIET DAVIS.

E-MAIL: ADD ON ...
I think I should have sent this one generation further back.
It goes Philip S. (abt 1750) married to Cynthia Carpenter, had a son Philip
(1777) married to Hannah, had a son William (1816)married to Betsey.
I guess what I am asking is: Do you have a Cynthia Carpenter, dua. of John

E-MAIL: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
My favorite and most intriguing cemetery find (of my recent Orange County
NY visit) was in the Pine Hill Cemetery.  There, at the top of the piney
knoll of the oldest section, stands the smallish stone of Gabriel Van Cleft.
A primitive design is inscribed at the top, forming a semi-circle of seven
"spokes" suggestive of a sunrise or sunset.  Below that, roughly hewn it
says "Died Gabriel; Van Cleft; November 22; 28 of his age; 1825.
Gabriel was a son of Benjamin Van Cleft and Abigail (Carpenter) Van
Cleft. Gabriel's father Benjamin died young (1806), probably about 25-30
years old.  Gabriel's mother Abigail was a daughter of Carman Carpenter and
Mary (Webb) Carpenter.  Carman Carpenter names Abigail (remarried to a
Young) and her minor children (including Gabriel Van Cleft) in his 1811 will.
Now here's the intrigue: Immediately next to Gabriel's stone are these:
        Levi S. Young (1810? aged 28?)
Susan Jane Young (1813? aged 26?)
        then a space
then a stone far too worn to read.
Now, Abigail's remarriage to a Young couldn't have been before she was
widowed in 1806, so what was this "other" connection between Young and Van
Cleft?  And where are the other Youngs (including Abigail) buried?
Further intrigue is the finding that the immediately adjacent row of
stones in this little section of the old piney knoll has:
        Isaac Carpenter (1818, aged 70)
        Susannah Carpenter (1860, aged 84)
        Moses Webb (1805, aged 25)
        Jonathan Webb (1801, aged 7_)
        Penelope Webb (1801, aged 67)
This Isaac is clearly the Isaac Carpenter #298 in ABC's Carpenter
Memorial (p.83), and Susannah his wife.  (Names and dates all match.)
Jonathan and Penelope Webb are parents of Carman Carpenter's wife, Mary
Webb.  With Carman's grandson Gabriel Van Cleft and the youthful Youngs
buried together with Isaac and Susannah Carpenter, and also with Carman's
in-law Webbs, the implied connection between Carman and Isaac Carpenter
grows.  They cannot be supposed merely as Minisink neighbors.  But just what
connection was it?
If anyone here can fill-in more on any of this, I'm all ears....

MORE:
Mon, 1 May 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
I've been muddling over the Carpenter-Webb thing ever since finding Isaac
Carpenter (ABC #298) and Jonathan Webb (d. 1801) buried together at Pine
Hill.  The only family linkage I find (other than the previously known
Carman Carpenter-Mary Webb marriage) is via the Steward/Stewart family.
Here it is:
   1. Jonathan Webb's 1792 will names Margaret Steward as a daughter (EWOC).
   2. Isaac (#298) Carpenter's 1811 will has witnesses Asa Steward and
Lewis D. Steward.
   3. Isaac's Brother Benjamin Carpenter (#301) was married to Eunice
"Stewart" (per ABC) and his 1811 will names John "Steward" executor and
Silas "Stewart" witness (per EWOC).
Another possible connection is that Jonathan Webb's will has Isaac
"Kinny" for a witness (per EWOC), and Isaac Carpenter's (2nd) wife was
Susanna "McKinney" (per ABC).
All this may simply indicate they all lived nearby and used each other
for witnesses etc...but that usualy doesn't cause people to be buried
together (given that Pine Hill isn't some little neighborhood cemetery).  I
don't remember seeing Steward's buried nearby...but I was not tuned-in to
the Steward name at the time, so I would probably not have noticed.
Does anyone know where Benjamin Carpenter #301 is buried?  Anyone know
whethr Isaac Kinny and Susanna McKinney are of the same family?
Robin.

Page 522: Regarding 1775 Tax roll.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Early Wills; Eunice Stewart
Hello Carpenter Researchers:
I've just discovered a mis-transcribed name in the OCGS "Early
Wills of Orange County."  Abstract of the 1770 will of John Stewart of
Goshen (EWOC volume 1, page 17) names a daughter "Runis Stewart" but
should say "Eunis Stewart."  This is the Eunis (Eunice) Stewart who later
married Benjamin Carpenter (ABC's #301).  That this "Runis" is the same
Eunice is plain (for instance) in "The Descendants of John Stewart" by
Ronald Lee Stewart, Ph.D.

> Hello Feeb:
>          I don't know if I've noticed previously your reference to Eunice
> Steward/Stewart.  I have info from Descendants of John Stewart (1997, by
> Ronald Lee Stewart, Ph.D.), pp27-28, that Eunice(3) of John(2) of John(1)
> was born in Goshen 7 October 1762, and died 1846 in Minisink.  Stewart says
> she married Benjamin Carpenter 15 January 1781.  This Benjamin appears to
> be ABC's Benjamin #301 (of John #74, of John #24).
>
>          Stewart cites SIX children of Benjamin and Eunice Carpenter (two
> of whom are not given in ABC's Carpenter Memorial): William b.1782, Sarah
> b.1784, Gilbert b. c1785, Gabriel b. c1786, Benjamin Jr b.1794, Susannah
> b.1796.  Gilbert and Gabriel are the two not cited by ABC.
>
>          I realize the Stewart info is tangential to your interest, but
> thought you'd be interested in the secondary confirmation (and perhaps a
> few tidbits new to you).

COMMENT:
There is some confusion between the father and the son (Jr.) because they lived and died so close together. I suggest land and tax documents to be reviewed. JRC

Comment:
Focus on Carpenter surname and places from the book. I ignored references to the carpenter occupation. OCR was used in many places to extract the data.
Yellow highlights show a record information number (RIN) and/or a brief comment represent data from the Carpenter Cousins database. See:

Before the Revolution William Carpenter moved from Goshen to a farm near Van Burenville; only a small spot was cleared, and for miles east of it there was only a foot-path through the woods.
He was in the war, and often his wife was obliged to bury her dishes and such articles as she valued, take her children, and flee to Goshen to escape the Indians.
After the war he and his family usually attended meeting at Goshen, always going on foot, only nine miles.
His children were William, died in 1875; Benjamin, now living in Wisconsin; Mrs. Jacob Mills, lived near Westtown ; Mrs. Eber Mapes, died at Middletown, 1869 ; Eleanor, never married; William, lived upon the homestead, had twelve children, who married and settled near him
His son Joel now owns and lives upon the farm which has been owned by the Carpenters over one hundred and ten years.(in 1880)

Peter Hoyt, another early settler, married for his second wife Mrs. Mary Vail, the mother of Mrs. William Carpenter, Jr. He had the following children: John, Archibald, Peter, now living in New Jersey, Mrs. Jeremiah Cox, Mrs. Alex. Bell, and Joel, who retained the old farm and died in April, 1861, his wife living only two weeks longer.
The farm is now owned and occupied by his only son, Samuel D. Hoyt.

Daniel Darby was born in Newburgh, May, 1799, came to Wallkill in 1823, married Julia, daughter of William Carpenter;
(RIN 58420 - daughter of a different William than above) he lives near Van Burenville. In 1841 he was town collector, had $3807.45 to collect, including his fees at three per cent. He went on horseback to every taxayer; it took him seven weeks to collect the sum. This year (1881) the tax to be collected in Wallkill is $81,907.33.

John Williams owned the farm adjoining the Horton and Clark farms, near the Wallkill meeting-house. He and some of his family were buried upon the farm over forty five years ago; the farm has been sold several times, and the burial-moot is almost forgotten. James L. Carpenter now owns and lives upon the farm (1880).
