Julia Wescott Carpenter was the daughter of John Carpenter, who worked for Horace Greeley on the New York Tribune.  She came to Clinton at the age of six weeks when her father was called to take the editorship of The Clinton Democrat.

She attended Miss Leavenworth's private school on East Main Street, and later was a student at St. Mary's Hall, Burlington, from which she graduated in 1887.

She was very involved in The Grandin Library.  She had an important part in its founding in 1898 and served as chairman of the book committee for many years. She was vice president of the organization, and was honorary vice president when illness prevented her performing the duties of the office.

She suffered a light stroke about 1950 and became completely paralyzed about 1955.  She died at the Union Forge Nursing Home near Clinton at the age of 88.  She had been at the nursing home for about 3 1/2 years.

She was survived by nephews and nieces, and Leon Carpenter of Clinton, a cousin.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Paul Goble, chaplain at Clinton Farms. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Clinton, next to her sister Amelia Louise Carpenter who preceded her in death by 11 days. Interment date Nov 20, 1957.

Her obituary was published in the Hunterdon County Democrat, November 21, 1957, page 10.
