In any case I must find the father of Samuel Bigelow Carpenter to go farther. I am doing this search for a Sons of The American Revolution application. Do you have or know of any place that I can find any records ? I will greatly appreciate any help you may give.GRAVE: images
Silas Benjamin Carpenter
Birth: 30 Jan 1852 Indiana, USA
Death: 15 Dec 1925 (aged 73) Alabama, USA
Burial: Fruitdale Cemetery, Fruitdale, Washington County, Alabama, USA
Memorial #: 29612376
Bio:
f/o Eubert, Emory, , Elza and Harry. In 1900 census he was a widower. He was the husband of Samantha J Smith born 3/18/1860 in Indiana and died 5/8/1892 in Jackson County,Indiana.Silas was a son of Samuel Bigelow Carpenter (1805-1933) & Jane Donaldson (1812-1880). He moved to Fruitdale, a widower in 1894 from Seymour, Indiana. He had a brother-in-law Luther Bedell who lived in Fruitdale. Emery was married and came to Fruitdale but returned to Indiana. Silas was a carpenter. I don't know what happened to Elza and Harry except they were living in Washington County, Alabama in 1930. Perhaps if the 1940 census is released there will be additional info.
Someone shows that Emery Carpenter a son of Silas and Samantha was born in 1880 in Indiana and died 1880 in Indiana. He was very much alive in 1930!!
In 1892 wife Samantha died; in 1894 Silas came to Fruitdale, Alabama with his sons Emery, Eubert, Harry and Elza.
In 1930 Emery is 20 years of age and living with his father who is 48, brother Eubert 18, Elza 14, Harry 11. They are in Yellow Pine, Alabama fairly close to Fruitdale area. Emery was married but I don't know to whom; and he did return back to Indiana but the other siblings and father stayed in Fruitdale. So he probably did pass away in Indiana. but not in 1880.
Silas and Eubert are buried at Fruitdale Cemetery, Washington county, Alabama. Eubert married Mary Imo Burkepile and she is buried Fruitdale also. I am not sure where Elza and Harry are YET.
----------
Phebe McWhorter married Silias Benjamin Carpenter in 1895, at Hamilton County, Indiana. There were no children from the marriage and Phebe died at Noblesville , Indiana on Apr 13 1897. She was the second wife to Silias. His first wife Samantha J. Smith died May 8, 1892, and they had four sons.Inscription:

Samantha died while her four boys were young. They went to live with an Aunt Cynthia A. Smith and Uncle Ike Bedel while Silas went south to Alabama to search for land and to seek employment. Carpenter Gored by Angry BullC. L. Carpenter was seriously injured in an encounter with an angry bull in the pasture at his home just south of town early Saturday morning, and died from the injuries a few hours later. It is presumed that Mr. Carpenter went to the pasture to drive up the cows and was attacked by the bull. No one being near to assist Mr. Carpenter the animal succeeded in knocking him down and was trampling and tossing him about with all of the fury an enraged animal can show. M. Spann, who lives near by, was milking a cow in his barn when one of his boys called his attention to the animals actions, but they could not see that it was Mr. Carpenter whom the bull was throwing about. Mr. Spann sent the boy to the S. B. Carpenter home with instructions to tell Mr. Carpenter what was going on. Mr. Carpenter was just getting ready to leave the house and hastened to the pasture where he discovered that the body being trampled was that of his father.Mr. Carpenter was carried to his home but the injuries he received proved so serious that he passed away shortly after nine o'clock that morning.Mr. Carpenter and his son purchased the old Kemp place, adjoining town, about thirteen years ago. they had during the meantime built up a place from swamp and weeds into a fertile truck and dairy farm which stands as a memorial to their thrift and perseverance.Funeral services were held at the Church of God, Sunday afternoon. Elder A. N. Dugger and Rev. Ralph M. Fagan presiding. A male quartet furnished several selections. burial was in the Bassett cemetery.

Bio: Arminda was the daughter of Henry and Catherine Bowers Grimm. She was the wife of Charles L Carpenter.ObituaryMrs. C. L. Carpenter ( Arminda M. Grimm) died at her home in Bassett, Nebr., June 21, 1936 at the age of 84 years. She had been in failing health for some time. She was one of 13 children born to Henry and Katherine Grimm. she was born August 31, 1852, in Pennsylvania, later moving to Ohio and to Iowa, then to Nebraska in 1874. In 1880 she was married to Charles L. Carpenter and to them eight children were born, two dying in infancy. Her husband preceded her in 1927 and her son, Paul R. died in 1934. The surviving children are: Charity Jeffryes, of Pender, Nebr., Effie Dugger of St. Joe, Hester, Maurice and Seely of Bassett, Nebr. Surviving also are three brothers, H. S. Grimm of Rock county; Fernando Grimm of Lynch, Nebr.; Lorenzo Grimm of Saskatchewan, Can.; and one sister, Mrs. Philmina Van Kleek of Venus, Nebr. She has lived in Bassett, Nebraska and vicinity for the past 29 years. she was a member of the Church of God, and lived a Christian life to the end. She was one of those rare self-sacrificing people who indeed lived for others and not for self. She was reconciled to her fate, and seemed satisfied to go and rest beside her son and companion, who had preceded her in death, where she expected to await until her summons came at the resurrection of the faithful, when Jesus comes to ransom the sleeping ones from the tomb. Mother Carpenter always had a long table spread in her home where the people of God, and her friends were made welcome. Her home was the stopping place of the ministers for years, and while she will be greatly missed here by all who knew her, and a chair has been made vacant, yet we sorrow not as others who have no hope, for we expect to meet her again.Funeral seervices were conducted by Brother Hugh Miller local elder of the Bassett Church and Elder O. E. Richardson of the M. E. church. She was laid to rest in the Bassett cemetery west of town, to await the return of Jesus, and the resurrection of the righteous.--A. N. Dugger

William Lewis Carpenter, born January 13, 1844 at Dunkirk, Chautauqua County, New York, died July 10, 1898 at Madison Barracks, Jefferson County, New York. Carpenter was a U.S. Army Officer, Naturalist and a Geologist who helped document the minerals and resources of the Black Hills of South Dakota which led to the Great Sioux War of 1876-77.[1]Early career
During the American Civil War he served as a Midshipman in the U.S. Navy from 1861–1864. Wanting to see more action, he resigned from the Navy and joined the Army. He became a private in Battery "D" 2nd Artillery on July 29, 1864. He transferred to Battery "L" September 25, 1865. He served at the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia and with the Army of the Potomac. He made Corporal on September 28, 1866 and Sergeant on January 29, 1867.
After publication of several scientific articles, ranging in topic from naturalist to geological surveys, he was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army on April 5, 1867. He was assigned to the 9th Infantry Regiment and encouraged to continue his scientific research on the frontier.[2][3]Black Hills duty
In 1872–1874 as part of the 9th Infantry Regiment, Second Lieutenant Carpenter documented in a series of reports information of minerals, including gold, being seized from illegal miners and trespassers who were being ejected (See: Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868) from the Black Hills of South Dakota.[1][4]
Carpenter was promoted to First Lieutenant for "exceptional duties" on December 31, 1873. His and other reports lead to Custer's 1874 Black Hills Expedition that set out on July 2, 1874 and returned on August, 30, 1874. Listed as "Bill Louis (sic) carpenter" he briefed naturalist George Bird Grinnell and others for that expedition.[5]
In 1875, Lt. Carpenter, under Colonel Richard Irving Dodge became part of the 1875 Newton-Jenney Party which was a scientific expedition sponsored by the United States Geological Survey to map the Black Hills of South Dakota.[6] Lt. W. Carpenter was commended for his "exceptional diligence and scientific assistance" and that he "contributed greatly" to the 1880 Black Hills Geological report.[7]
In 1876, Carpenter was recorded as a participant in the Battle of the Rosebud in Montana Territory on June 17, 1876 as First Lieutenant of Company G, 9th Infantry,[8] in which 1,200 cavalrymen under General George Crook supported by 300 Crow (Absaroke) and Shoshone warriors were attacked by about 1,500 Sioux and Cheyenne warriors under Chief Crazy Horse.
Carpenter was second in command of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment who was documented as "awaiting reinforcements after the Battle of the Rosebud" on June 20, 1876.[9]In 1877, under orders from General Philip Sheridan (later in 1883, Commanding General of the United States Army), Lt. William Lewis Carpenter made his final report on the "Geology and Natural History of the Big Horn Mountains."[10] This report provided the economic reasons of the land and gold rush into the Black Hills of South Dakota 1873–1877, and was well received by the scientific community. Nominated by geologist W. P. Jenney, who encouraged him to go into academics, William L. Carpenter was elected a "Fellow"[11] of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on September 4, 1877.
In 1880 he was enumerated in the U.S. federal census as a soldier in the unorganized territory of Nebraska. In 1882 he was listed as an officer of the Department of the Platte: "First Lieut. W. L. Carpenter, Ninth Infantry, Company B, Fort Niobrara."[12][13]
His later duties included scientific collections and observations.[14]Later career
Carpenter was promoted to Captain in 1887.[15]
In 1892, after 37 years of service in the Civil War and Indian Wars, the 9th Infantry Regiment was transferred to routine garrison duty in Madison Barracks, New York.[16]
In Feb 1894, Captain Carpenter was at Madison Barracks where he was appointed to serve on an Army court-martial: "A general court-martial is appointed to meet at Madison Barracks, New York, on Feb. 21, 1894. Detail...William L. Carpenter, Ninth Infantry..." The 9th Infantry's official 1909 history includes several mentions of his service.[17]Personal
Carpenter was the son of William Lewis Carpenter (Senior) (born July 17, 1813 in Batavia, New York, died in 1867) and Mamie Frances Bristol (born about 1813). He was the only son of three children. His immigrant ancestry is from the Rehoboth Carpenter family through William Carpenter (born 1605 in England).[18][19]On March 12, 1878 Carpenter married Ann Curtis Steever, who was born ca. 1844 in New York. They had one child, a son, Marsh Steever Carpenter, born in 1883. In 1897 Carpenter joined the District of Columbia chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.[15] After his death from Bright's Disease on July 10, 1898 at Madison Barracks, his widow was appointed postmistress of Fort Myer, Arlington County, Virginia in 1899 as cited in The Washington Post, May 24, 1899: "Mrs. W. L. Carpenter, widow of the late Capt. Carpenter, Ninth United States Infantry, has been appointed postmistress at Fort Myer, Va. The office was sought for by numerous candidates, but Fourth Assistant Postmaster General Bristow decided to give the plum to Mrs. Carpenter. Her late husband died at Madison Barracks, N.Y., on July 10, 1898, after an illness of several months. He had a long record of honorable service, extending over more than thirty years."[20] A detailed obituary issued as a military order is reproduced on pp. 848–849 in "The Carpenter Memorial".[21] He and his wife are interred in Arlington National Cemetery.[22]

Sue Carpenter Lake
Birth: 15 Sep 1857
Death: 18 Apr 1930 (aged 72)
Burial: Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Sioux County, Iowa, USA
Memorial #: 126656741
Bio:
Mrs. G.P. Lake, a pioneer resident of Union county and a long time resident of Hawarden, passed away at her home here at 11 o'clock last Friday morning. Although Mrs. Lake had been in poor health for the past 22 years her death came suddenly and peacefully. It was known that her condition was critical but she was up less than an hour before she passed away and talked with those about her. For a number of years during her long illness she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Miss Alpha, who spared no efforts in doing all she could to relieve her constant suffering.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon with Rev. G.A. Patterson, pastor of the Baptist church, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Her two grandsons, Philip and George March, her two grand nephews, Lester Wakeman of Sioux Falls and Gilbert Wakeman of Akron, and J.E. Tilgner and Rayford Anderton acted as pall bearers.
Sue Carpenter was born near Springfield, Ill., Sept. 15, 1857, and passed away in Hawarden April 18, 1930, having attained the age of 72 years, 7 months and 3 days. She came to Union county with her sister and family in a covered wagon when she was but 14 years old and they located near Akron. She was united in marriage with George Palmer Lake Oct. 14, 1877, and to this union were born three children, one of whom, Agnes M. precede her in death Nov. 17, 1925. Mr. Lake passed away Oct. 28th of last year. After her marriage she lived on a farm four miles southwest of Big Springs until 1892 when with her family she moved to Hawarden. After the death of her sister, Mrs. Mattie Larkin, with whom she came west, she looked after the needs of her six nieces and nephews and was practically a mother to these young children. She united with the Baptist church in Akron when a young girl and when she came to Hawarden she united with the local Baptist church. Later she united with the First Baptist church in Sioux City and she remained loyal to her faith until her death. Besides her two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth March of Vermillion, and Miss Alpha Lake of Hawarden, she is survived by two grandsons, Philip and George March, and one great granddaughter, all of Vermillion, and six nieces and nephews.
Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lester Wakeman, Lake Larkin, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Crammond and Miss Catherine Crane of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Gust Johnson of Montrose, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Larkin of Le Mars; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wakeman, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wakeman and Mrs. E.E. Mellon of Akron; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Larkin of Vermillion and Mrs. Cora Holten of Sioux City. The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa) 4/24/1930
