Birthday dinner for Three Saturday evening, July 19, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Carpenter of South Cherry Street entertained at an eight o'clock dinner in honor of their three granddaughters the Misses Eva Ladesa Johnson, Bethe Belle Mertz and Florence Mae Brown, whose birthdays are all in the month of July.
A four course dinner was served and the color scheme of Nile green and white was very prettily carried out. Carnations of the two shades were used to decorate the table. A birthday cake, standing fourteen inches high with a candle to represent each year in the ages of the three girls, stood in the center of the table.
The three girls were cleverly dressed in evening gowns of Nile green. House games were played during the evening after which a program consisting of readings and musical selections were given
At 12 o'clock the birthday cake was cut by the three girls and hot coffee and waters were served. Much merriment was had where the futures fortunes were found in the pieces of cake.
The invited guests for the evening were: Miss Ian Gerrals and Messrs Donald Holt and Forrest Cory all of Ames IA; Miss Mae Bowers and H. J. Bowers of Fort Dodge; Aden Arnold, Paul Arnold, Miss Dorothy Outtrim and Mrs. Mae Mertz of this City.

DEED: 1861 - images from a 2 page photocopy
Indenture dated 25 Sept 1861 between John B. Carpenter and Catheine his wife, William R. Vail and Frances his wife. Robert Eiudly(sp?) and Phebe his wife, Samuel Miller and Susan his wife. Daniel B. Reed and Eleanor his wife, David E White and Mary his wife, all of the first part and Isaiah Carpenter of Barryville in the town of Highland, county of Sullivan and State of New York of the second part.

In summary the second part paid $25.00 to the parties of the first part for property situated in Highland listed as lot number 20 of the Seventh Division of the Minisink Patent.  The description of property starts “at a heap of stones on the east side of the highway near the southwest corner of the fence” followed by defined degrees of angles and distance.

This included land conveyed to John Carpenter, deceased on 16 Feb 1858.  Parties appeared before the court via over different periods and were sworn and testified of the intent of the transfer and it was approved 5 Apr 1877 as a genuine transfer of title.

This came from the Sullivan County Historical Society via a photo copy of the 2 page deed. This supplied by  Kathryn Dahl via email on 8 Aug 2023.

The 28th New York Regiment was part of the Union Army II Corps, 1st Division, 1st Brigade.

Some time later the Union dead were later gathered together and buried at Culpeper. But many were never identified.  Most are listed as Unknowns.

Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper
As was the case for a number of the national cemeteries from the Civil War, Culpeper National Cemetery is located in the area where the Union hospital was based after the Battle of Cedar Mountain, which took place on August 9th, 1862.
The 28th New York was very heavily involved in that battle and lost nearly 60% of the regiment killed, wounded and captured. Of those men 48 were killed during the battle. After the battle, the dead were initially buried in a mass grave on the battlefield. It contained about 200 Union soldiers.
After the battle, the soldiers were reinterred at Culpeper; however, we do not know exactly how many men from the 28th New York were buried there or who they were as no records appear to exist.
We know of a number of men who died at Cedar Mountain who have marker stones at cemeteries in the up-state New York area, however, in both cases where a burial site has been visited, it could be suggested that they are memorial sites, rather than burial sites.
Below is a list of the men of the 28th New York who were killed in action at Cedar Mountain and who are believed to be buried in the mass grave at Culpeper National Cemetery:

COMMENT:
While there has been cases of individuals listed as killed in action that survived the war, they are fairly rare. More often are individuals who were wounded and then died after coming home because of the wounds sustained.
Until we have better information, the person who served may have been or may not have been the same John B. Carpenter.
And see the 1865 New York State Census extract.

DEED:  1861 - to be supplied by Kathryn Dahl
I will scan the deed when I have a chance, but it is from 25 Sept 1861 between John B Carpenter & Catherine Carpenter his wife, William R Vail and Frances his wife(resides in Warwick), Robert Embly and Phebe his wife(Resides in St Joseph Michigan), Samuel Miller and Susan his wife, Daniel B Reed and Eleanor E his wife and David E White and Mary his wife. All selling land to Isaiah Carpenter. Sullivan Historical Society said this was a helpful document because it showed the sisters married names.

Thank you for your quick response!
This is not my John Carpenter.  <--- aka John P. Carpenter above.
The census in 1950/55/60 all place his birth around 1819. Making him just around 43 in 1861. These documents say he is 33.
Both Angelo and John B(1862) are in the Trevor census, but in 1880 Angelo was labeled 'Carpenter' and "step son." I've included.
John B 1918 sons:
1. William Warren 1856- 1939 Nebraska - one daughter dies in childhood
2. George 1858 - 1950 Pine River, Wisconsin - no children never marries
3. John B 1862-1921 (my 2x great grandfather) - Berlin, Wisconsin - 2 daughters 2 sons all live to adulthood.
4. Angelo 1864 - 1946 Manistee County, Michigan - one adopted son
William and Angelo both state their father is Jon and John B on wedding lisc.
I have noted John Bs marriage to Emma says his father is Samuel, but I've seen these mistakes often since they are written by someone other than the parties.
That marriage record you have for Katherine in 1864 is for a different Katherine in Waushara WI. She marries John Goodwin and has children with him. My family is not related to them. That document is often associated with my Catherine.
William Trevor and Catherine DO marry, but not until ~1868 I have not located their wedding cert. He entered the country from England in 1866 to travel to Waushara Wisconsin where his mother lives. This makes it impossible for him to be Angelo's father, plus they go on to have biological children with the last name Trevor.
Williams obituary states his father dies when he is ten. Georges articles states 'after his fathers death Catherine and his brothers travel to Wisconsin at the end or after the Civil War" There is no mention of their father serving, but George does write he likes to pretend he's a soldier by carrying around plant stalks for guns. This doesn't mean his father didn't serve, but I would think he would add his father was killed in battle. George becomes kind of a famous guy in Pine River Wis, in his old age.
...
Like I said, I'm stuck! Thank you very much for your efforts. If you discover anything please please let me know. I will be traveling to Sullivan county NY this summer. If I discover anything I'll message you too.

Catherine Reed

COMMENT:  From Kathryn Dahl - removed for privacy - email 7 May 2023
I now have two resources which state Catherine came to Wisconsin with five Carpenter sons. One is Williams obit, the other a written family story. If there is another brother they are dead by 1900 when Catherine says she's had 11 births and 7 living children. I can account for 7 living children in 1900.
I have already written to Sullivan Co historic society and I'm waiting to hear back.
I've reached out to Waushara County Historic soc: in an article George Carpenter states the Pine River Wis. school was built on "the original Carpenter Homestead". If I can see who's plot it is, it would be a helpful clue.
I've also reached out to the Montoza Cemetery Assoc. to see if there are any plots for John and/or Anna or John B 1819 or children. I think John B 1819's brother Isaiah is buried there.
My original goal in all this was just to find where John B Carpenter went. If he is buried somewhere and where. I appreciate your quick responses and curiosity. I completely enjoyed poring over old records.
As for living male Carpenter's. I'll look into it. I'm traveling this week to where all my grandfather's records are supposed to be... my Uncle's. He is in failing health and is "unsure where they are" Maybe I'll have an update with new sources shortly.
Thanks so much!
Kathryn

COMMENT: From Kathryn Dahl via email 10 Aug 2023
Side story on Daniel B Reed. This is the name of Catherine Carpenter's (John B wife)  father. Daniel B Reed has an unnamed oldest son. I am wondering if this DB Reed in the deed is him. The name Warren- is Catherine (And potentially Daniel B Reed in the deed's) youngest brother who died while serving in the Civil War in 1864.

20882. John B. Carpenter

CENSUS: 1855 New York State Census - age 10/12 as on 1 June 1855.
Born about July/Aug 1854

20883. William Warren "Warren" Carpenter

BIRTH:
Born 20 Mar 1850 per obit and 20 Mar 1855 per Ancestry Tree below and Kathryn Dahl has 20 Mar 1856.
Per Kathryn:
As for William's birthday. I have a typewriter written document from the 1970's about my family. There is one minimal paragraph about the Carpenter's. The only hand written note on it is above William's name. The date "March 20th 1856". I have, until recently, used the same birthdate you do- 1855. Once I found his obit which also states 20th March 1850 I cross referenced with every census I have on him. 1860,1870,1880,1900,1920,1930. Some match for a spring/March birthday. Others do not, typical.
The 1900 Census states his birthday is March 1854. If his birthday was March of 1854 he would be 1 in the 1855 census and John B #1's conception/birthday is impossible -10mos in 1855.
If his birthday is March 1855 1. He'd still be in the June 1855 census 2. Let's impossibly say Catherine became pregnant the day she delivered John B #1- about July 1st 1854 her due date would be April 6th, 1855. I know I'm nitpicking census dates which I don't typically do. If we continue to push the conception date further into 1954, William would be too premature for March. And if his birthday is later in 1855 and not March, summer/fall of 1855. His father dies when he is ten 1865, this story could be inaccurate, but all observations I've made. Take them as you will.
My grandfather knew both George and William, I now view his correction with some truth. I wish I could ask.

Warren Carpenter Dies February 7th; Services Held Here On Thursday
Warren Carpenter was born in the state of New York, March 20, 1850. His father died when he was ten years of age and he came with his mother and four brothers to Berlin, Wis. His early life was spent in Wisconsin and Michigan. When he was about thirty years old he came to Fremont, Nebr., where he was engaged in the bakery business. It was there that he was married and to this union one daughter was born, who died in infancy.
He was one of the early pioneers of Chadron, coming here in 1886 or '87. Here he had a candy store and bakery and later was engaged in carpenter work. He bought a ranch east. of Chadron, where he lived until 1920, when he sold the ranch and bought property in Kenwood and ran a hardware business until 1929. He had been in failing health for several years and in 1929 was committed to the hospital at Norfolk, where he has been until his death February 7, 1939. He leaves to mourn his death, one brother, George Carpenter, Pine River, Wis., one sister-in-law, Mrs. Emily Carpenter, two nephews, Dan and Ernest Carpenter, of Ashford, Wis., and two nieces, Mrs. August Dahl, Bessemer, Mich., and Mrs. Glen Finney, of Chadron.
Funeral services were conducted last Thursday from the Erlewine Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edmond B, of the Baptist church, officiating. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery. v siii

DEED: 1861 - imags from a 2 page photocopy
Indenturement dated 25 Sept 1861 between John B.

CENSUS: 1865 New York State Census - Not found on Ancestry or Family Searhc. Apparently the entire Sullivan County 1865 is missing in their records. But the following record was found in the Sullivan Coutny Historial Society records and they were type whn transcribed.
