----- Fwd email Subject: Henry Carpenter 1836 I attached the information that I have on Ancestry.com regarding the lineage of Henry Carpenter down to my belated husband, Howard Lane Nutt. There are many Carpenter trees but no one can even give me a hint as to Henry's parents. If you can help me without investing a lot of your time I would be extremely grateful!
I also attached a photo of Henry and his wife Emily A Lane and a picture of the Carpenter House in Kansas where my husband and his mother were born. I also had the Allmon Family Bible in my possession until I passed it on to Howard's son. Some pages were in terrible condition but I copied the one giving details of Henry Carpenter's entries.
Lastly I purchased the book titled "A Geneological History of the Rebobath Branch of the Carpenter family in America" by Amos B Carpenter and written in 1898. I have not been able to find anything regarding Henry in that book.
Text Report

F Orie Emily Carpenter was born28 Dec 1871 in Kansas City, Kansas.

A book titled: “Linn County, Kansas A History” , page 175, authored by William Ansel Mitchel, copyright 1928 confirms this information. %%%  Also these names and dates are recorded the same in the Allman Family Bible.

Along with these names and dates it is written: “ …by the death of his father he was thrown on his own resources when but a boy. He went to Hannibal, NY where married Emily A. Lane. Emily was a sister of the well-known John S Lane and the daughter of : “Uncle Jackie” Lane.
Orie E Carpenter married Frank Allman in Linn Co., Kansas on 2 Sept 1891.

Their children included three boys and on daughter named Bonnie E Allman. Bonnie married Fred Henry Nutt in Linn Co., Kansas on 27 July 1930.

They had two children, a girl and a boy. The boy’s name was Howard Lane Nutt born 4 Oct. 1936 in a town named Boicourt, Kansas. That town no longer exists since a mining operating took over. Therefore the house where my husband was born, known as “The Carpenter House”, was said to be located in Pleasanton, Kansas. Howard died 31 Oct. 2010.

Dear Mr. Carpenter:
The Genealogical Society of Vermont recently received your request regarding the birth of Henry Carpenter on 5 February 1826 in Bennington, Vt. There is no record of a birth of that name or date recorded in the Bennington town records. There is a Henry Goss Carpenter who was born there on 27 September 1822; son of Richard and Betsey (Austin) Carpenter, but that is the only birth of a “Henry Carpenter” in Bennington during that time period. It is certainly possible that the other Henry’s birth was not recorded or he was born in another town in Bennington County. However that name and birthdate do not appear in the Vermont Vital Record Card Index under any other town either. In looking at the 1830 census, besides the above mentioned Richard, there is also an Eli Carpenter residing in Bennington. Sincerely, Jonathan W. Stevens, President of the Genealogical Society of Vermont

These all married except Warren, who died in infancy. Large families were raised by John Wellin, who married Dorothy Neollsch; Ward J. who married Anna Kelsey; Frank H. who married Maggie A. Woliver; Freds S married Ella Pierson; Nile P. who married Delia Calvin; and Orie E. who married Frank Allmon September 2, 1891. Mrs. Allmon says her mother often told her of the hardships they suffered in the first years, one incident being that of the father walking to Fort Scott and carrying home provisions for his hungery family when his horses had been "borrowed' by the Bushwhackers.

PLEASANTON OBSERVER, December 24, 1908, information provided by Cawker.

A short time prior to his death "Uncle" Henry Carpenter carelessly scratched the following: "Eighty-two years of doubts and fears Now have passed away; Since in Vermont midst need and want; I first saw the light of day. If any more I have in store, There's no one now can say But more or less I hope for the best As long as here I stay; and when I leave I do not grieve, For none my place can fill; And when I go you sure will know, It is the Master's will."

John L.,
Reynolds Carpenter-42780 died 21 Aug 1862.
Henry Carpenter-134284 b. 5 Feb 1826. When Reynolds died, Henry was 36. And per the book below, “... and by the death of his father he was thrown on his own resources when but a boy.”
Reynolds as a father is inconsistent with this info. However, Reynolds is a brother to Eli Carpenter-42797. And the theory of some type of relation to the Niles sisters still stands.
A more likely candidate for Henry’s father, also present in the 1830 US Census in Bennington County, VT is Eli Carpenter-42793 who had a male child of the right age for Henry.
Eli died 2 Jan 1838 when Henry was age 12. This is consistent with when Henry was but a boy.
Eli Carpenter’s wife Julia Crary Carpenter was listed as head of house in the 1840 US Census with a male child ...
Free White Persons - Males - 15 thru 19: 1 (b. 1821 - 1825)
... born in the right time period when Henry was almost 15.
While it is possible, but unlikely she remarried, I think Julia died between 1840 and 1850.
Henry married in 1849 at age 23 in Oswego County, NY. Where was he before he moved to New York per the book below? If he was in Ohio, was did he move to New York? Was it for school or to be near a relative?
We find another clue in his obit. See GRAVE: below.
“He came to Kansas from Oswego county, New York, in the spring of '60 ...” This is confirmed by the 1850 US Census and shows he was in Hannibal, Oswego , New York.
Besides the Erie canal running along the southern portion of Oswego County, what else was there to attract him in the northern part of the County? Could he have gone there because of family? Maybe a first cousin like Christopher Carpenter-16895 who was living in Oswego County in the 1840s? Yes, Christopher died in 1847 in Summerville in the adjoining county, but many of his children stayed in Oswego County.
Christopher C. Carpenter-16895 and Eli Carpenter-42793 are 1st cousins. Their common ancestors are Jeremiah Carpenter-7864 and Elizabeth Reynolds-7845.
Think of Henry losing his father at age 12 and by 14-18 losing his mother (likely) then his Cousin at 21 where he was living (possibly). And at age 23, Henry married in 1849.
Now if I can just prove it. But time and resources are limited.
Who else is working on Henry’s line?

Julia Forbes Carpenter
Birth: 13 Jun 1826 New York, USA
Death: 1 Aug 1899 (aged 73) Saint Charles, Saginaw County, Michigan, USA
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Saint Charles, Saginaw County, Michigan, USA
Memorial #: 50543570
Bio: She was wife of Alonzo Carpenter, born 1812 in Saratoga, New York, the son of Amasa B & Lucy (Stone) Carpenter.  Alonzo's brothers Asa & Amasa are part of our family tree so I've adopted Alonzo & Julia and their children also.  Alonzo's death seems to have occurred in Nov 1870 but it's a mystery.  Julia was living with her son Frank in 1880 and may have done so until her death.Note from goroke (#47115147):The last time I can account for Alonzo is the 1860 census, so if I had to guess, I would guess he died between then and 1867, when Michigan started keeping death records.

Enos Eastman
Birth:  Oct. 27, 1821
Ellisburg
Jefferson County
New York, USA
Death:  Jun., 1908
Plymouth
Sheboygan County
Wisconsin, USA
On Sunday afternoon, the grave closed over the remains of one who had early cast his lot with this community and had been loyal to its interests. The history of the town and city of Plymouth would be very incomplete without the name of the Honorable Enos Eastman. He came here when the abodes of the few scattered settlers were only small, inconvenient huts, hastily constructed of rude logs, when there were but a few small patches of Indian corn here and there with a few spots of yellow grain. He came with his wife in 1849 when this was a wilderness, and he did his part in hewing the dark old woods away and gave the virgin fields to the day.
He was pioneer not merely in the matter of having come early, but he was a pioneer in all the activities which have given to the activities which have given to the community its character. He was a thorough believer in education and he never grudged a cent he gave towards the support of the schools. If any real improvement was to be made in them he not merely gave his tacit consent, but his voice and influence to promote it. There were no worthy interests he did not encourage. He entered into nothing half-hearted.
Mr. Eastman was born in Jefferson county New York, October 27, 1821. In 1844 he married Miss Miriam Carpenter and in 1849 they came to what is today Plymouth. They were one of the first families to settle in this area when it was a wilderness. They purchased land and developed a substantial farm which was located in the area of South Milwaukee and Eastman streets.
He held several town offices among them were clerk, superintendent of schools and county chairman. Enos was president and treasurer of the Union Cemetery Association for many years. When the horse and carriage would enter the gates, Enos would provide the pall-bearers with white gloves to carry the casket to the grave. When the pall-bearers left the gates, Enos would collect the gloves for the next burial services.
The Eastman's were blessed with six children of which four survive. Mrs. R. Gardner, Mrs. G.W. Zerler, Charles Eastman and Enos Eastman, all of Plymouth. Two daughters passed away, Sarah in 1869 and Miriam Warden in 1882. Charles is president to the Exchange Bank. Son Enos continues to operate the farm.
In spite of the threatening weather, the attendance at Enos's funeral was large, people having come from various parts of the county. There were many floral tributes, tokens of esteem, but there was not a tribute more sincere than the words of the venerable pioneer N.C. Harmon of Waldo. As he stood beside the casket he referred to his departed friend as "the grand old pioneer." Enos died at the age of 86.

DIES AWAY FROM HOME
Asa Carpenter, Pioneer of Sheboygan County and Resident of Plymouth Called to
His Reward---Visiting in Minnesota at Time of His Death
Asa Carpenter, former member of the county board and an honored resident of the
city of Plymouth, died at Brownton, Minn., Saturday where he had gone with his
wife a week ago for a visit. Asa Carpenter was born in Sandy Creek, Oswego
County, New York, December 26, 1829 and in 1851 came west, arriving in Sheboygan
April 18. Mr. Carpenter came here with the intention of teaching school, but
through a misunderstanding among the schools he gave up the idea, and
shouldering an ax went into the timber, where he was employed for sometime.
Later he purchased 80 acres which he cleared within a short space of time, and
this was put under cultivation. He added improvements from time to time, until
his farm was considered one of the best in the county. He lived on the farm
until he retired and moved into the city of Plymouth. Mr. Carpenter was married
in 1854 to Miss Harriet Wilson, one of the early pioneers of the county. She
died in 1891 and a year later was married to Miss Edith Chase. He is survived
by the widow and one son, William Chase, the later being a student at Ripon
College, taking an engineering course.
Asa Carpenter was a staunch republican, always taking an active part in
politics. He had served as a member of the county board and for many years was
chairmen of the town board in the town where he resided previous to locating in
Plymouth. Mr. Carpenter was a man respected by all, and news of his sudden
death came as a shock, not alone to the people of Plymouth but in the city and
throughout the county.
The remains will be brought to Plymouth for interment and in all probability
the funeral services will be held on Wednesday.
