Bio: Syracuse NY Herald, 1904
MRS. FANNY HALLOCK CARPENTER OF NEW YORK
Mrs. Fanny Hallock Carpenter was born in Connecticut. Her childhood was passed in Jamestown, N. Y., and her girlhood in California. She is a graduate of Mills college, California. After her marriage to Phillip Carpenter she spent five years in New Hampshire, and has resided in New York city ever since. She was graduated from the New York University Law School in 1896 and admitted to the bar of the State of New York in 1897. For the five years between her admission and 1902 Mrs. Carpenter devoted much of her time to her law practice, and although the clubs take so much of her time that she has been obliged to neglect her profession up to a certain extent, she is never without some legal business in hand. She argued and won a case in the New York Court of Appeals before Chief Justice Parker, and was the first woman who ever won a case in that court and the second to appear there. The case was won in June, 1901, and involved $75,000. Mrs. Carpenter joined Sorosis in 1896 and is now first vice president of that organization. She is also president of the Women Lawyers' club of New York, which has more than thirty members, all of whom have been regularly admitted to the bar. She has just retired from the presidency of the National Society of New England Women in New York city, and is still the legal advisor of the club, as she has been for the last five years. Among the clubs which Mrs. Carpenter has incorporated is the International Sunshine society.
Mrs. Carpenter has traveled extensively, having been abroad seven times. Last summer she traveled all through Spain and has visited every European country from Scotland to Hungary. She has wheeled all around France from Havre to Nice on a bicycle in company with her husband, making from fifty to eighty miles a day. She is very proud of the fact that she can ride a horse over any kind of country.
"I rode constantly for two years in the Hawaiian Islands," she told a Herald reporter yesterday. "I have carried a milk pan of honey over the roughest trails six miles on horseback, and I could stick like a burr to a flying horse."
Mrs. Carpenter has been invited to speak at club breakfasts and banquets galore from New Hampshire to Michigan. She says that she likes best to speak to the smaller clubs, because it means so much more to them than to those which can do more to entertain their members.
Mrs. Carpenter is a clergyman's daughter, granddaughter, niece, grandniece and sister. Her grandmother and William Cullen Bryant were first cousins and grew up together among the Connecticut hills. Mrs. Carpenter is the direct descendant in the tenth generation from John Alden, through his daughter Anna.

SUDDEN DEATH OF PROMINENT YOUNG MANWill A. Carpenter Found Dead at His Mother's Home in Mart Sunday Afternoon
Not more unexpected nor cause for greater sadness have been many events in the history of Mart than the death of Will A. Carpenter, age 30, which occurred at his mother's home here Sunday afternoon, March 14.
The taking of his own life while in a state of mental abrittatio was the result of worry over financial affairs. For several weeks he had brooded over what seemed to him his own failure to successfully manage his mother's estate, which had been his responsibility since the death of his father, Dr. W. B. Carpenter, about two years ago.
His own business having suffered in the general depression of the past several months, and having found it difficult to make necessary loans to conduct his mother's business as he considered it, he was goaded to desperation before the fact was realized even by those nearest and dearest to him, otherwise relief would have provided and the tragedy averted.
Will Carpenter was born at Mart Feb. 8, 1885. He was reared in this community before the new town was developed by the coming of the I. & G.N. railroad, and after finishing his course in the high school here, went to Baylor University, Waco, from which institution he graduated in 1907. He then returned to Mart and in 1911 went to Waco where he engaged in the real estate business with C.L. Willie, whose partner he was at the time of his death.Family Members
