Subject: Evelyn Carpenter
Hello -
I am interested in finding the name of my great-grandfather.  I have a name that was hand-written but cannot decipher it.
My grandmother was Evelyn Carpenter.  I believe that she is of the Rehoboth Carpenters. Many years ago my older brother sent me a copy of the “Carpenter Memorial” and believe that it was his intention to show our family lineage although I cannot track where my Grandmother comes into the picture.
Evelyn’s mother was Maud Ward.  It is her husband that I am trying to find a name for.
Evelyn married my Grandfather Lehman Sanger Ettelson.
Evelyn was a writer and novelist and wrote under the name of Evelyn West.  Her principal work was “Animal Farm”.
I would appreciate any assistance.
Thank you!
Nicholas Ward Polit

NOTE:
Me thinks he is confusing author Evelyn Waugh who knew author George Orwell who wrote the book "Animal Farm" in 1945. Two movies were based on that book.  And there was an Evelyn West but she ...
Evelyn West (January 30, 1921 – November 14, 2004[1]), a.k.a. Evelyn "$50,000 Treasure Chest" West, and "The Hubba-Hubba Girl", was a vedette and burlesque legend of the forties, fifties, and sixties. She was born Amy May Coomer.

COMMENTS: from Justin
As for George P Carpenter/Patrick Cochrane, my trail for him starts with him naturalizing in New York on 29 Apr 1854, then enlisting in the Civil War in August of 1861 as a heavy artilleryman, demoted to private, and deserting by November of the same year. I am sincerely trying to imagine how badly one has to flame out to be demoted that steeply in no time at all.
His marriage to Mary A Curran was either 1861 or 1881, but since Mary died in 1874 and he's listed on the census as a widower in 1875, I'm pretty sure that's a 6 and not an 8. My last record of Patrick Cochrane is 1860, and my first record of George P Carpenter is his marriage to Mary in 1861, I'm guessing that he returned from his desertion of the Union army pretty urgent to ditch the name Cochrane and establish an alternate identity.
And here enters Adams Carpenter....Quaker. My understanding is that the Quakers were against the war, and refused to take up arms in it. While this is purely conjecture that fits the evidence, the roughly one-year span of 1861 seems to be defined by Pat Cochrane going to war as a heavy artilleryman, abandoning his company, and Pat rushing back to establish a new identity and life in quite a hurry. Suddenly, he's George P Carpenter, and suddenly, he's married. I sense a man moving very, very quickly to become Not Patrick Cochrane The Deserter.
I wouldn't be surprised if he spent time in a workhouse, though I see some records of Pat Cochrane from that area of London returning to the workhouse after our Pat was in America, so I'm not sure it's the same Pat Cochrane. (It could be that the later Pat is a different Pat Cochrane. Two guys with a pretty common Irish name in London? Color me unsurprised.)

Suggestions made for dates, places, parents and bio suggestion.
Suggested:
"The young man's birth name was Patrick Cochrane, but he took the name of George Patrick Carpenter upon adoption, and raced horses with Adams and Thomas, dying in 1884 after sustaining a really nasty broken leg and internal injuries after a horse kicked him. He was a fairly famous jockey, and most famously rode Thomas Jefferson (the horse, not the president), "The Black Whirlwind of the East," to some of his best prize-winning times."
Per Justin Carpenter, a descendant.

George married Mary A. Curran on 14 Feb 1861 in Rhode Island.

An Opinion from Abroad.
"Veritas." in the Spirit of the Times, speaks of George Carpenter's death as follows: "Another, an old-time trainer, has passed away, as I learn that George P. Carpenter died at the hospital in Hartford on the 14th inst., from injuries received about three months ago, when he was kicked by a horse and received a compound fracture of the left leg. Also serious internal injuries. He was born near Providence, R. I.
His real name was Patrick Cochrane, but he took the name of George P. Carpenter after he went to Hartford, as he was brought up by the late Ad. Carpenter.
He used to drive Old Put, Fanny Jefferson and others of lesser note. He made his greatest reputation in piloting Thomas Jefferson to victory in the great stallion race at Buffalo, ten years ago. As to his heart and principles, a brother trainer tersely says: 'he was always a very clever, straight follow, and a hard worker.'

For official use, however, it is called the Town of St.Stephen-Milltown as written agreement stated at amalgamation in 1973.
