Notes

14597. Mary Jerusha Carpenter

Story in Cuyahoga Co OH History Book, date unknown, after 1940, pg 94-95.  Josiah Carpenter.........Of the children of Caleb and Susan Haynes, .......Mary married Nathon Dodge of Put-in-Bay.  She had three children, Lewis, Elliot and Mary who married Mr Webster.  All are deceased but some descentants still live on the Island.......

1847 - Mary S Carpenter married Nathan Dodge, 3 August 1847, Cuyahoga Co OH.  Married by D Dodge, Minister of Gospel.  Recorded in Vol 4, pg 417.  This record has the middle initial of "S" for Mary.  (Note the date of 17 July 1847 that I had been using is the date of the application for marriage license.)

1848 & 1850 - First 2 children, Ellen and Jane, were born in OH, 1848 & 1850.  (1880 census possibility for Jane listed her born in WI.)

1850 census needed, should be in OH. Maybe WI.

1852-1858, Children, Lewis, James Elliott, Emma O, & John B were born in WI from 1852-1858.

1860 Dane Co WI, Windsor town (indexed as Windson), 13 Aug 1860, #85-92, Nathan DODGE, 35, male, farmer, RE value $2800, PP value $100, NY; Mary J , 34, female, OH; Ellen M, 12, female, school, OH; Jane A, 10, female, school, OH; Lewis C, 8, male, school, WI; James E, 6, male, school, WI; Emma O, 4, female, WI; John B, 2, male, WI.

1860-1870, Nathan Dodge probably died between 1860-1870.

1869 - Child Edna/Edith was born abt 1869 in OH.  Is she a child of Mary Jerusha (Carpenter) and Nathan Dodge or was she an orphan or possible grandchild?  Seems like a long time span between birth of John and Edna/Edith.  Also Nathan Dodge has died sometime between 1860 & 1870,

1870 Ottawa Co OH, Put in Bay Twp, 24 Aug 1870, 98-90, Mary J Dodge, 43, female, white, keeping house, RE value $1600, PP value $115, OH; Jane A, 20, female, white, at home, WI; Lewis C, 18, male, white, school, WI; Elliott J (James Elliott), 16, male, white, school, WI; Emma, 14, female, white, school, WI; John B, 12, male, white, school, WI; Edith L, 1, female, white, OH.

1900 - I do not find Mary J (Carpenter) Dodge on the 1900 US census index.  She may have been with one of her children or possibly had died.

They came to Cuyahoga Co, OH, about 1818, and it was here that they subsequently met and married, their marriage occurring in Strongsville twp.  They settled on a farm a short distance east of Strongsville Center, where they reared their family, spent the rest of their lives and died, the date of her death being October 10, 1847, and that of his, January 20 1873.  They had a family of nine children, of whom Reuben was the third born.  With the exception of two years, the subject of our sketch has spent his whole life in Strongsville twp.  One year he lived in Wisconsin and one year in Cleveland.  Farming has been his life occupation.  His political affiliations have been with the Republican party, he has taken an active and commendable interest in all local affairs, and has filled most acceptably several official positions.  For six years he served as Township Trustee, and was a Justice of the Peace for three years.  Mr Carpenter was married in Brunswick, Medina Co, OH, October 11, 1849, to Miss Matilda S Umber, who was born in Peru NY, April 6, 1831.  Her parents, William and Betsey (Knowles) Umber, both natives of NY, came to Cuyahoga Co in 1840 and settled in Strongsville twp.  They subsequently removed to Columbia, Lorain Co, thence to Berea, OH, and from there to Jackson, Michigan, where Mrs Umber died.  Mr Umber died in Strongsville OH.  Mr and Mrs Carpenter have had six children, viz: Alden V, William L, Eva M, wife of William Twining; Edmond R, who died at the age of eight years; Alvin M, and Frederick A."

1899 - Reuben Almeron Carpenter and Matilda (Umber) Carpenter celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary 11 Oct 1899, at Alvin M Carpenter's home in Cleveland OH.

1899 - Newspaper article - The Carpenters Held Their Eleventh Annual Reunion.  Two Hundred Present.  Originally Descended From A Family of France.  In America Since 1638.  The True Blue Puritan Blood Runs Through Their Veins.  A Happy Affair at the Residence of Hiram Brown and Mrs S M Carpenter, No 854 Prospect Street - A Pleasing Programme Rendered.  Under the trees that shade the lawn beside the residence of Mr Hiram Brown and Mrs S M Carpenter, at No 854 Prospect street, the eleventh annual reunion of the Carpenter Family Association of America was held yesterday, about two hundred of the Carpenters and their relatives being present.  Though the association is a national one, most of its meetings have been held in Cleveland, where there are several hundred Carpenters, descendants of the original New England Rehoboth Carpenters.  They are all descendants of William Carpenter, who came over from England in the good ship Bevis in 1638, and settled in Massachusetts.  The family tradition is that the Carpenters of England were originally the Charpentiers of France, who emigrated in1303 to London, then a very small place, and almost surrounded that city with their farms and gardens.  London grew over the farms.  Of the Charpentiers _____________ who afterward anglicized the name to Carpenter, but they remained the owners of the land to so great an extent that even now more of the land on which London stands is said to be owned by people named Carpenter than by people of any other one surname.  The Carpenters are said to be the largest taxpayers in the world, there being two or three British noblemen bearing the name.  The American branch of the family was one of the earliest and strongest of the old colonial Puritan families, and its association is one of the strongest family associations in the country.  R Almeron Carpenter, of Strongsville, presided at the reunion yesterday. B W Brown, of No 3325 Euclid avenue, being the secretary.  Hiram M Brown, at those house the reunion was held yesterday, has been the historian of the association for years.Tables were spread, and dinner served under tents on the lawn.  After that the members of the association assembled under the trees for the programme that followed.  B E Carpenter was chairman of the entertainment committee.  Charles Adams, of North Ridgeville, began with a patriotic address, in which he referred briefly to the family history and President R Almeron Carpenter talked interestingly of his recollections of pioneer life.  Mrs Carpenter of Berea, read a poem on the months, and Benjamin Brown read a paper dealing with the street car strike, in which he pointed out that both the company and the men were more or less at fault.  Miss Stone of Berea, read some selections from Sam Kiser's Leader poems, and during the progress of the programme several selections were rendered by an orchestra of mandolin and guitar players.  The report of the historian, Mr Brown, was brief, touching only the main facts of the family history and genealogy, all the details being preserved in a great family history book that covers some six hundred years.  Horace Carpenter, of Brunswick OH, was elected president of the association for the coming year, Pliny Haines, of Akron, vice president, Benjamin W Browne of this city, secretary, and H M Brown, also of Cleveland treasurer.  A committee of eight was appointed to arrange for next year's reunion at Berea the first Sunday in September."

1900 Cuyahoga Co OH, #123-124, Reubin A CARPENTER, head of household, white, born June 1838, age 71, married 50 years, OH VT Mass; Matilda S, wife, born April 1841 (should be 1831), 69 years old, married 50 years, 6 children born with 5 living; NY NY NY; Howard, grandson, born June 1894, age 5, single, OH OH OH; Raymond, grandson, born June 1897, age 3, single, OH OH OH.  (Raymond is a child of son, Frederick Carpenter.  Who is Howard?)

1903 - "History of Strongsville OH", printed in 1903.  "Reuben Almeron Carpenter, the second son of Caleb Carpenter, was born June 10 1828, at Strongsville Ohio.  He received a common school education, spending one year in Berea.  The year 1848 he spent in Windsor, Wis, teaching school.  In the following year occurred his marriage to Miss Matilda Umber, of Berea, when he settled on the home farm, where he has always lived, with the exception of one year spent in Windsor, Wis.  Mr Carpenter was township trustee during the war, serving six successive terms, and afterwards, from 1870-1880, he held the office of Justice of the Peace.  He has always been a Republican, never having voted any other ticket.  Mr and Mrs Carpenter's family consisted of five sons and one daughter.  The eldest son, Vernon, died recently in Cleveland, and another son, Eddie, died while young.  Eva married Mr Will Twining and resides in Cleveland.  Will lives at Belvidere IL.  Alvin M and Fred are residents of Cleveland.  Mr and Mrs Carpenter celebrated their golden wedding in 1899, and have lived to see one great grandchild."

Cuyahoga Co OH.  Recorded in Vol 14, pg 202.  Married by A W Knowlton, M G.

1870 Rock Co WI, Clinton town, Clinton PO, 13 June 1870, #225-234, Norwood
BOWERS, age 27, male, white, well driller, RE value $1000, PP value $500, male
eligible to vote, PA; Susan C, age 27, female, white, keeping house, OH; Grace, age
1, WI.

1877 - "Strongsville.  Died, Mrs Susan Bowers, wife of Norwood Bowers, and
daughter of Caleb Carpenter of Strongsville, at her home in West Depere, Wisconsin,
on the twentieth of July, in the thirty-fifth year of her age.  She leaves a husband and
two children and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her early death."
(Taken from Births, Marriages, and Deaths, Reported in newspapers published at
Berea, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, November 1868-January 1879", pg 196.)

1880 census lists a Grace BOWERS, age 11, grand-dau, born WI, in household of
Daniel TALLMAN, Rock Co WI, Clinton.  (Can this be the correct Grace Bowers to be
the child of Susan Carpenter?  It looks like she probably is.  How was she a
granddaughter of this Daniel Tallman?)

1880 needed for widower, Norwood Bowers.  I do not find Norwood Bowers in the
1880 US census index.  Nor do I find an N Bowers that would fit.

1900 census shows Norwood Bowers in Michigan with a new wife, Alice, and they
have been married 20 yrs.

1910 census shows Norwood Bowers, 67, married 2nd time 29 yrs, PA NY NY, listed
in Michigan with same wife as 1900.

Samuel was an adopted child of Caleb and Beulah (Dewey) Carpenter.  He was born
in Germany in 1847.  He was a Civil War Veteran who lost an am in combat.

where he lost an arm.  I have a picture of Samuel A Carpenter from a Cuyahoga Co

surviving Strongsville veteran of the Civil War at the time of his death in 1928 at age

married, there is no record in Cuyahoga Co OH marriage records.  (There is a record

HISTORY:  Nebraska
On May 30, 1854, the US Congress created the Kansas and the Nebraska territories, divided by the Parallel 40° North, under the Kansas–Nebraska Act. The Nebraska Territory included parts of the current states of Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana. The territorial capital of Nebraska was Omaha.
Nebraska became the 37th state on March 1, 1867, and the capital was moved from Omaha to the center at Lancaster, later renamed Lincoln after the recently assassinated President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln.

SUMMONED TO HER HOME
Death of Mrs. A. Carpenter at the Home of Dr. Taylor
FUNERAL OBSEQUIES
Largely Attended Monday Afternoon
Again has death invaded our midst.  It becomes our sad duty this week to announce the death of Mrs. A. Carpenter.  She died at the home of her son-in-law, Dr. M. J. Taylor shortly before the hour of twelve on Saturday the 16th.  While the death of Mrs. Carpenter had been anticipated for some days yet the final announcement was received with expressions of regret and sorrow on all sides.  It produced a feeling of profound sadness in the community.  The deceased had been so long an active participant in the life of the community, was so well known, had mingled with so many people socially and religiously her death could not be otherwise than the source of great sorrow.
Two months ago Mrs. Carpenter was in the enjoyment of perfect health, or as nearly so as may be possible with an aged person.  She was able to attend to her customary duties, to look after her business affairs and attend church.  Her final sickness dates from an injury received about six weeks ago the details of which appeared in these columns at that time when she accidentally fell and suffered the fracture of a hip.  She was at the home of Dr. Taylor and immediately had all the care necessary in so serious an injury.  For a time she seemed to improve and it was confidently believed that with the approach of spring she would recover permanently.  But later an aggravating trouble appeared in the form of an abscess on her neck, the nature of which baffled the most skillful treatment.  Under its effects the patient gradually grew weaker as the days went by until the end came.  It was really the cause of final dissolution.
The deceased was born in Medina, Ohio, on July 2nd, 1833, and to the time of her death she was 70 years, 6 months and 14 days old.  Here she resided until in the early fifties when she was married to Adna Carpenter.  She immediately came west with her husband settling in this vicinity where she has ever since resided.  She was one of the early pioneers of the county and together with her husband she endured with extreme fortitude the hardships incident to pioneer life.  She was a faithful helpmeet, a just and affectionate wife and mother, and a lovable woman, impressing her individuality in a quiet way upon all with whom she associated.  She made no pretentions whatever and did not assume to leadership in the church or society.  Nevertheless her life was such that she drew people unconsciously perhaps to the better life.  Especially was this the case with the younger people.  She was a great lover of children and drew them to her as does the mother who looks with affection upon her loved ones and guards them.  And all the children were her friends and loved her as a mother.  No greater tribute may be paid to any person than that she was the friend of the young and that the young were her friends.
Two children, Mrs. M. J. Taylor, and Miss Cora Carpenter, are left to mourn her loss.  Her husband died some years ago.  The funeral was conducted Monday afternoon from the residence of Dr. Taylor, Rev. J. P. McCoullough officiated.  A large number of people, former friends and associates paid their last tribute of respect by attending.  Many beautiful flowers were placed on the coffin, silent tributes of love and regard.  The remains were interred in the Janesville cemetery.
Mrs. Carpenter was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church reflecting her faith, her sincerity, her religious life in all that she did and all that she spoke.  She was a sincere christian woman whose noble life is worthy of emulation.  Relatives from out of town attended the funeral as follows:  Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Carpenter and Mrs. M. A. Ostrader, of Kasota, Mrs. C. B. Carpenter, of St. Peter, Mrs. Jennie Burnett, of Waseca, Hon. Horace Cummins, of Eagle Lake.
One by one humanity is going to its long home.  Every day, every week adds new names to the long procession.  Now someone is taken in the full enjoyment of health, summoned suddenly, with the future bright, with no cloud to obscure the vision of human life and happiness.  Then again the summons comes to the patient one who for weeks and months perchance has been the victim of suffering.  Again it comes to the young in childish innocence.  It has no limit, it knows no age, it is governed by no conditions.  Its increasing frequency should remind us all that as mortals rapidly hastening to the tomb we should ever by ready for in such a moment as we know not we may be called.
