Biographical information for Meriva Carpenter
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following biography, submitted October 2004, has been provided by Terry L. Carpenter, a Carpenter family historian:

Meriva M. Carpenter was born 28 April 1802 in Ellington, Tolland County, Connecticut, a daughter of Dr. Ruggles and Juliana (Pierce) Carpenter. She married a cousin, Eli Carpenter, who was born in 1794 in Oxford, Grafton Co. New Hampshire, and they settled near the town of Homer, Cortland County, New York in an area that came to be called Carpenterville, now East River.

Eli was a successful miller and dyer, and they were prosperous enough to build a fine house which they filled with art treasures. The noted artist Sanford Thayer painted portraits of Eli Carpenter (displayed in the Phillips Library in Homer) and son Volney Carpenter. Meriva is known to have painted landscapes and miniature portraits for Homer-area residents, some of which reportedly survive in the Homer community.

Among Meriva's children, daughter Marciana Melvina Carpenter, born 2 Dec 1820, was also an artist, and a taxidermist. Meriva Carpenter is interred in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, New York, the same cemetery where noted artist Francis Bicknell Carpenter, a distant cousin, portraitist of President Abraham Lincoln, is interred.

One published reference to her work is an article by F. F. Sherman: "Unrecorded Early American Portrait Miniaturists and Miniatures" in Antiques, Vol. 23 (January, 1933), p. 12 (cited in Art Index under "Meriva Carpenter, fl. 1843").

Some details in this bio are from a brief typescript biography of the Eli Carpenter family compiled by Katherine Waden Crutts of Cortland, NY, 13 April 1937; the obituary of Marciana Melvina Carpenter, both provided by Esther C. Slater, of Skaneateles, NY, from the files of the Cortland County Historical Society, Cortland, NY; and tombstone inscriptions from Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, NY, provided by Wendy Settle, of Portland, OR.

CONFLICT:  I have 2 Eli Carpenters in Cortland county about the same time.  One from CT and the other from NH?  I have them both married to a Miriam or Marion or Mariva.  SEE: RIN 17789 (b. 1795) and RIN 88512 (b. 1793). Are they confused with each other?

History of Homer from Smith's History part 2
The water power at this site is a very valuable one. In 1816 Eli Carpenter came from Tolland, Conn., purchased a share in the water privilege and lands contiguous thereto and put up a fulling-mill and facitities for dyeing and dressing cloth, with carding machine, etc. This establishment was very prosperous for several years and the business was further extended by Mr. Carpenter in the manufacture of carpets of brilliant color, dyed by himself. In the mean time Mr. Crandall's mills had become somewhat imipaired by age and about thebyear 1835 or1836, he became the sole owner of the site and water power, and proceeded to erect new mills. The business revived, but the domestic manufacture of cloth declined yearly and was eventually abandoned. The mills erected by Mr. Carpenter are still standing, but have been much enlarged and changed to meet the growing needs of the vicinity. A large businss is done in the manufacture of flour and feed and in the production of lumber. Alfred Utley succeeded Mr. Carpenter in the mills, following whom came the present proprietors, the Holmes brothers in the saw-mill, and the Cortland Wagon Company in the grist-mills, which are managed for the company by Wm. H. Moore. Mr. Carpenter was a man of energy and business ability and prospered in whatever he undertook. He was justice of the peace a number of times, and died in 1863.

Nancy Cody

She was supposed to be first cousin to Buffalo Bill Cody.

CHILDREN: Two of his children are dropped from the Carpenter Memorial:
They are Number 8126 (Alfred penned in my copy) and 8127 (Charles penned
in my copy) with no birth dates et cetera.  They were added to this record.
It was probably this son who was impressed as a young man on the British ship
"Ramilles."  In 1813, while the British fleet lay upon the coast near New
London, CT, it was ascertained that a young American named John Carpenter was
an impressed seaman on board the "Ramilles," where he served for about five
years.  He belonged to Norwich, and contrived in some way to let his friends
know of his situation.  His father went to the vessel with a flag of truce and
the proper testimonials in order to obtain if possible his release.  An
affecting scene took place when the father and the son met on the deck of the
ship.  Commodore Hardy expressed his sympathy, and the proper formalities
having passed, he discharged the man.  SEE: History of New London.
Another account says when the father visited the ship, it appears the commander
doubted his story, that his son was on board, and he placed his men on deck and
told him to pick him out, which he readily did.

Probably 5677 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 767, Family Number 1606.
This line supplied by John DEAN Gernon of Glendora, CA in March 1997 who has
this "John" born about 1810 with a wife named "Fannie Lewis."  There is still
a question if he belongs in this family.

Sarah or Fannie Lewis

Unknown if "Carpenter" is maiden or married.   In the Carpenter Memorial the
Last name is not known.  So "Carpenter" is dropped.

John DEAN Gernon of Glendora, CA in March 1997 lists her as Fannie Lewis born
about 1810.  The Carpenter Memorial has her as "Sarah".
