Genetic Tests

I would like to order genetic tests for one of my sons.
They are related to Peter Alexander Carpenter (great
grandfather) Civil War physician who homesteaded near
here in Colorado.  Which test panel would make the most
sense to order.?  We recently held a Carpenter family
reunion and family connections are more interesting now
that  my sons have met some of their relatives.
Thanks,
Jean Carpenter

Death:  Feb. 2, 1924

Biography Mary P. Scarborough Carpenter
A pioneer woman, settled with her family in Fort Collins about 1872. Her husband, Peter Alexander Carpenter, suffered from tuberculosis and died soon after coming to Colorado. Their homestead was near the Cache La Poudre River, seven miles from the military camp in early Fort Collins. Mary raised three sons and contributed to her community. "Reminiscences", her handwritten autobiography dated April, 1906, is a beautifully written account spanning the years from the 1830 to 1906. She details her early life in New York state, the family's move to Tipton, Iowa, years of travel during the Civil War, her husband's military life, and finally their settlement as homesteaders on the Cache La Poudre River in 1871.

Bio:
Five Carpenter brother, Isaac, Jeremiah, Daniel, Timothy, and Justi, along with wives and children, left Lexington, Morrow County, Ohio in a covered wagon about 1853 to come to the town of Franklin, Sauk County, Wisconsin.(1) Following is a description of their journey and the first winter here.

"The trip to Wisconsin took four weeks. On the way they dug ginseng, which was used for medicinal purposes. At Sauk City they crossed the Wisconsin River by ferry and came to White Mound. Isaac had built barns in Ohio and his job, with the help of his brothers, was to put up a crude shelter in which they all lived together that first Winter. The shingles and boards were all made by hand. The floor of the house was made from slabs, hewn from logs. The Women wove willow splint baskets and the men dug ginseng, which was sold at Boscobel."

Isaac, known as "Master" Carpenter, had brought his barn-building tools with him. He and his brother built some of the first barns in the valley. Another brother, John Hiram, and his wife, joined them after he completed his service in the Civil War in Ohio. The brothers had bought land adjoining each other as near as possible, and, because of this, the settlement was known as Carpenter's Settlement prior to it being called White Mound. Mention is made that a Nathaniel Mitchell had a farm up Honey Creek Valley when the Carpenters arrived.

Daniel Carpenter owned what is now the Edward Liegel place, Isaac Carpenter owned the present John Francis Dischler farm and also other acreage, Jeremiah B. Carpenter owned what is now the Walter Bindl farm. Justin owned land on the west side of present Highway 23 near where GG goes to Loreto. John Hiram Carpenter owned land that is now the Niemann place. There are general areas and not the same boundaries as today, as the land records show that the Carpenters bought and sold land in numerous transactions from the 1850's through the 1890's in this area.

Jeremiah Carpenter and his family returned to Ohio sometime in the 1880's and most of the others moved to the Spring Green area.

OBIT:  supplied by Jim Carpenter
Death, Daniel Carpenter
The Free Press, Reedsburg, Wisconsin
Thursday, January 20, 1898
Daniel Carpenter died Jan. 13, 1898, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Claridge, Reedsburg, Wis., after
suffering eleven months from a trouble akin to jaundice, and a confinement of one week. The funeral was held on
Sunday at the Methodist church, Rev. G.N. Foster officiating, and a large number of people attending.
Mr. Carpenter was born May 2, 1828, in Medina County, Ohio, and was married July 24, 1851, to Margaret
Thompson of Richland County, in that same state. In 1853 they came to Wisconsin and settled in the town of
Franklin, Sauk County, and here on a farm they raised their family and resided until about eight years ago, when
they came to Reedsburg to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. J.H. Claridge. Their family consisted of three
daughters and two sons – Mrs. Alice Baer, of Black Hawk; Mrs. Lucinda Morgan and Mrs. Eliza Claridge of
Reedsburg; Isaac W. Carpenter of Orchard City, Arkansas, and George Carpenter of the town of Reedsburg. Two
brothers were present at the funeral – Justin Carpenter of Spring Green and John H. Carpenter of White Mound. He
also has a brother, Lafayette Carpenter, and a sister, Elizabeth Hower, both living in Ohio, who were unable to
come. Mrs. Carpenter survives him.
He was converted and joined the M.E. (Methodist Episcopal) Church in 1868, while W.R. Irish was pastor of their
Church in Franklin, and during his last hours was at peace with God and ready to meet death.
Compiler’s Note: The name of son Isaac’s city of residence, Orchard City, Arkansas, was later changed to Gentry, Arkansas.

Death, Carpenter
The Free Press, Reedsburg, Wisconsin
Thursday, November 17, 1898
Margaret, wife of Daniel Carpenter, died Nov. 12, 1898, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Claridge, in
Reedsburg, Wis., after suffering from pneumonia about two weeks.
Mrs. Carpenter was born Jan. 12, 1829, in Richland Co., Ohio, was married July 24, 1851. In 1853 they came to
Wisconsin, and settled in the town of Franklin, Sauk Co., and here on the farm they raised their family of five
children, consisting of I.W. Carpenter, of Orchard City, Ark.; Alice M. Bear, of Black Hawk, Wis., Lorinda J.
Morgan, Eliza Claridge and Geo. Carpenter, all of whom were present at her funeral. She leaves behind seventeen
grandchildren and two aged brothers.
During the past 10 months she was permitted to live since her husband’s death, she bore her sorrow bravely and was
ever busy, helpful and comforting to those around her. Her greatest joy was the little children around her; as did
Jesus, who claimed her, she loved the little ones. Without a struggle she fell asleep in His loving arms.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, at the Methodist church, Rev. G.N. Foster officiating.

OBIT:
Mrs. G.W. Morgan Stricken Tuesday
Had Failed Rapidly the Last Three Weeks; Resident of Hawkins and Ladysmith 30 Years
Ladysmith News, Ladysmith, Wisconsin
Friday, November 29, 1935
Mrs. G.W. Morgan died Tuesday morning at her home in this city, death resulting from a complication of ailments.
In the past three weeks Mrs. Morgan had failed rapidly. Funeral services were conducted by. Rev. R.L. Jamieson
Wednesday morning at the W.D. Morgan home and the body was taken to Reedsburg for internment.
Lorinda Jane Carpenter was born at White Mound, Wis., Oct. 6, 1859. November 23, 1879, she was married to
George W. Morgan, also a resident of White Mound, where they established their first home. Two years later,
business interests took them to Reedsburg, Wis. For 25 years, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were recognized leaders in civic
and church life in that community. To them was born one son, Walter D., who became his father’s business partner.
Together they built the Morgan lumber mill at Hawkins, and the two families in consequence became pioneer
settlers there.
When Mrs. Morgan and her husband came to plans for more leisurely days, in which to enjoy the comforts of life,
they moved to Ladysmith, where he began the erection of his home, doing much of the finer finishing work himself.
Only a brief time were they able to enjoy this new home together. Within a few weeks, Mr. Morgan was stricken
with the illness that resulted in his death in August, 1915. For a time, “Grandma Morgan,” as she was generally
called, felt that there was little in life for her, but gradually her religious training, her love of handicrafts, her
enjoyment of work among flowers, helped her re-establish herself. She transferred her membership to the Ladysmith
Methodist church and in the course of time joined the woman’s class, the Ladies’ Aid, the missionary society and
the W.C.T.U.
For a year, Mrs. Morgan had suffered a complication of physical ailments, failing noticeably during the last three
weeks.

OBIT:
Obituary – Morgan
Free Press, Reedsburg, Wisconsin
Thursday, September 9, 1915
George W. Morgan was born at White Mound, Sauk county, Wis., August 13, 1858. For two years they made their
home on his father’s farm.
They came to Reedsburg in the fall of 1881 and he was engaged in building, contracting and retail lumber business
with his brother-in-law J.H. Claridge. The partnership lasted twenty-three years and many of the business blocks and
beautiful homes of this city and for miles in the surrounding country was built under their supervision.
In 1905, Mr. Morgan, with his son W.D. Morgan as partner, built a saw mill near Hawkins and engaged in the
whole-sale lumber business. In 1913, when the cut at Hawkins was completed, the mill was moved to McIntosh,
Ontario, where the deceased spent the past two summers.
In July 1914, he started to build a home in Ladysmith where he planned to enjoy his later years. However, it was not
to be. Hardly had he finished his home when he became ill about four months before his death which occurred
August 12, 1915.
While a young man he united with the Methodist church at Reedsburg and for many years was superintendent of the
Sunday School at this place. He was a man of sterling worth, quiet and unassuming, but highly respected by all who
knew him. He will be sadly missed by a large circle of friends. He leaves to mourn his loss his widow and one son
W.D. Morgan of Ladysmith.
A short service was held at the home conducted by Rev. Wm. Iley of Bruce, the remains were brought to Reedsburg,
where services were held, conducted by Rev. J.E. Kunders of Rice Lake, a former pastor of the deceased while a
resident of Reedsburg. Internment was made in Greenwood Cemetery.

OBIT:
J. Claridge Ends Life on Wednesday
Death of Public Official Shocks People of This Community
Hold Funeral Today
The Times Press, Reedsburg, Wisconsin
Friday, February 1, 1935
John Claridge, public official and real estate operator, took his own life Wednesday morning. His act was a shock to
his family and many friends of this area. Not in the best of health for the past year, it is believed that his physical
condition prompted the action.
His body was found by his son, Ted, who noticed his father’s absence from the house when he arose. Mr. Claridge,
always an early riser, had gone out to the woodshed and ended his life by hanging. County authorities were notified
and Coroner Clyde Lobdell declared no inquest was necessary.
Funeral services for the deceased will be held at 2 o’clock from the home today, Friday.
Mr. Claridge had appeared as jovial as usual the evening before, conversing with his wife and son in the usual
manner. Friends, though, had noticed that Mr. Claridge did not seem his gay self the past few months. Of general
jocvial (sic) disposition, with twinkling eye and ready smile, he has usually greeted everyone with a cheery “hello”.
But lately his attitude changed, and from outward appearances it appeared as if he had brooding over his health.
Mr. Claridge, who 74 years of age, is survived by his widow, and the following children: Theodore, at home; Dr.
J.D., Loyal, and Miss Mae (sic), Chicago; and Dr. Ralph, St. Louis. All the children are home for the last rites. Mr.
Claridge is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Wm. Claridge, Excelsior, and two brothers, George, assistance postmaster,
here, and Joshua, Chicago.
Mr. Claridge was assessor for the city of Reedsburg since 1908, except for one two-year term. He was one of the
oldest assessors in this area in point of service.
Prior to his assuming public office, Mr. Claridge operated a lumber yard in partnership with the late George Morgan.
Their buildings were located where the Central Wisconsin Creamery is now situated. The firm built many of the
homes of the city at that time.
Following his retirement from the lumber business he engaged in the real estate business and operated a farm east of
the city.

Louis Utendorfer

DEATH:
Louis Utendorfer Dies Suddenly
The Weekly Home News, Spring Green, Wisconsin
Thursday, May 10, 1934
Louis Utendorfer was suddenly stricken while seated on the porch at his home last evening and passed away within
minutes. He led his usual active life up to his last hour, although he had not felt real well for several days...
Obituary – L. Utendorfer
The Weekly Home News, Spring Green, Wisconsin
Thursday, May 17, 1934
Louis Utendorfer was born at Warren, Pennsylvania, November 16th, 1853, and when he departed this life on May
9th, 1934, had attained the age of 80 years, 5 months and 23 days. When he was three years old, he came with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Utendorfer, to Spring Green, so most of his four score years have been passed in this
village and township. In 1880 he married Alta Carpenter of the White Mound neighborhood and together working
hard, they shared the joys and vicissitudes of life.
Mr. Utendorfer’s vocation was that of farming and he and his wife began their married life on the old Utendorfer
farm located near the river until the fall of 1888, when they built a new home and removed to this village.
His was an active life. He loved work and worked hard for the joy of it – because there was work to be done, and it
was not his nature to shirk, his toil being amply rewarded financially. He found pleasure in the company of young
people and his companionship was appreciated by them. He was a devoted husband, a kind neighbor, a good friend
– always willing to go to the relief of those in distress. His rugged honesty gained for him the respect and confidence
of all who knew him, and a host of friends mourn his passing.
His wife, frail in health, has the sympathy of all in this sudden parting. Of the family of brothers and sisters, but two
remain – Mrs. J.H. Carpenter of Spring Green and William E. Utendorfer of Grand Forks, North Dakota. There are
also surviving many nieces and nephews.
The funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon, Rev. W.J. James officiating, and interment was
made in the Spring Green cemetery. Those from a distance present were: Miss Lou Bailey, Prairie du Sac; Mr. and
Mrs. J.J. Flannery, Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Barry, Muscoda; Mrs. Rose Trumpf, Mrs. Thomas
Fitzpatrick, Miss Thelma Jones, Madison; W.G. Evenson, J.H. Hill and son James, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pope,
Baraboo; Mrs. Walter Hudson and daughter, Lone Rock; Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Mahoney, Dean Pope, Arena

Good Morning, John:

Marked up pages attached.

As to the correction for the birthplace of Daniel Hayes Carpenter-210886 (Page 7), "Perry Township" is from Debra Gedney Carpenter Genealogy. Steam Corners is in Troy Township (location of the Justin Carpenter property and other family members). Perry Township is directly south of Troy Township. Since Thomas Alonzo was a farmer, it is unlikely he lived in the unincorporated community of Steam Corners, but rather in a rural township. Unless the birth was at the residence of a mid-wife.

To avoid confusion for Daniel's wife (also Page 7), her record should read: "Daniel married (MRIN:73919) Flora Meckley-210887. Flora was born on 20 Aug 1873 in , Morrow, Ohio, USA. Shw died on 23 Nov 1922 in , Morrow, Ohio, USA. She was buried in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Richland, Ohio, USA."

His father was then enumerated in 1850 in Troy Township,, Morrow, Ohio about 4 miles from Lexington.
Jim Carpenter later adds:
There is no certainty that the parents of John Hiram Carpenter-134377 were living in Worthington Township, Richland County, Ohio on 2 December 1843. I suggest going with just Richland County consistent with his Wisconsin Certificate of Death and his obituary.
His parents Justin and Elizabeth sold their 100 acre homestead in Worthington Township on 11 April 1843 and purchased  an 80 acre homestead in Troy Township, Richland County, one year later on 16 April 1844. Whereabouts on JHC birth of 2 Dec 1843 can only be presumed as in Richland County.

OBIT:
OBITUARY - J. H. CARPENTER
The Weekly Home News, Spring Green, Wisconsin
Thursday, August 30, 1928
John Hiram Carpenter was born in Richland county, Ohio, December 2, 1843, one of eleven children born to Justin
and Elizabeth Brown Carpenter. His father was a native of the state of Vermont who later moved to Ohio and who at
the age of fourteen with his only brother, Daniel, enlisted in the war of 1812. Both served their time and were
honorably discharged.
It was natural that their son should answer his country’s call in time of need. He enlisted in Co. F. 43rd Volunteer
Infantry and served in that regiment about one year. In 1864 he came to Wisconsin and enlisted in the First
Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, Co. G, in which he served until the close of the war with the rank of sergeant.
John H. Carpenter married Julia A. Culley in Morrow County, Ohio. She died in Wisconsin, leaving one child,
Charles. In 1880 he was united in marriage with Carrie Utendorfer of Spring Green, to whom were born Mayme,
James and Frank, who preceded him in death July 4th, 1911.
Mr. Carpenter began his early farm life at White Mound. Later he retired to Spring Green. He has ever been a highly
respected, useful citizen, having served as a member of the county board continuously for many years. He has long
been secretary of the Franklin Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Company and served in that capacity at the time of
his death.
He united with the Methodist church in Ohio and has ever been a faithful and consistent member. Mr. Carpenter
passed from this life August 23rd, 1928, aged 84 years, 8 months and 21 days. He is survived by his widow, three
children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. For this pioneer counsellor and friend “The muffled
drum’s sad roll has beat the soldier’s last tattoo; no more on life’s parade shall meet the brave and fallen few. On
fame’s eternal camping ground their silent tents are spread and glory guards, with solemn sound, the bivouac of the
dead.”
Funeral services were held at the M.E. (Methodist Episcopal) church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. M.
Philpott. The four remaining members of the T. J. Hungerford Post, G.A.R., the W.R.C. (Women’s Relief Corps)
and an escort of American Legion veterans attended. At the grave a military service was given, a firing squad fired
the salute to the dead and John Carpenter, grandson of the deceased, in Boy Scout uniform, sounded taps on the
bugle.*
* John Carpenter is the father of Jim Carpenter.

Some of the photo identification commentary below comes from a 44 page copyrighted document authored by Phyllis Liegel Dearborn in 2002.       ( Original Essay - My Ancestors, by John Hiram Carpenter, Circa 1928.pdf  )

Subject: Rehoboth Carpenter Genealogy
Hi John:
It has been a while since I have provided you with updates based on research into the White Mound (WI) sub-branch of the Rehoboth Carpenters. I am finding more time in retirement to devote to this project, although I admit to being a rookie researcher.
I have been in recent touch with a public library and local historical society in Sauk County, Wisconsin, where my great-grandfather (John Hiram) and four of his older brothers settled after traveling with family members from Lexington, Ohio, in the 19th century. Those two contacts led me to two Sauk County Histories, one published in 1880 and the other in 1918 (both downloadable from the internet), that provide biographies of my great-grandfather, his nephew and brother-in-law (George) and a distant relative (Newell), all descendant's of William and Abigail. Attached are transcripts of those biographies with the sources identified as well as a lineage trace back to William to aid you in updating the Carpenter Cousins website.
Of particular interest to me is George Carpenter, who served one two-year term (1913-14) in the Wisconsin Assembly, the lower house of the legislature. His biography and photograph are included in the 1913 issue of the Wisconsin Blue Book, a document published biennially to record, in significant detail, the activities of the legislature and the administrative departments of the state government.
The 1918 biography of George lists a daughter (Vertie, which may be a nick-name) who died at the age of nine years - I have not yet found a record of her birth or death. With the assistance of my second cousin's spouse, an avid researcher, and an in-person visit with the local historical society's researcher this coming July, I hope to document those dates. In the meantime, I may visit the San Diego Mormon Family History Center to search for her birth record.
Finally, there is a slight variance of George's day of birth between the 1918 Cole Sauk County History (April 22) and the 1913 Wisconsin Blue Book (April 25). Another item to research and verify.

Subject: Deed and Plat Maps, Justin Carpenter-8739 in Troy Township, MorrowCounty, Ohio
Hi John:
Thought I'd start fresh with a new message.
Attached are the following pdf and jpeg files:
1. Deed for the 80 acre parcel in Section 8, Township 20, Range 19 in Troy Township, Richland (now Morrow) County, Ohio, purchased by Justin Carpenter in 1844. He and Elizabeth died in their home on the adjacent 35.325 parcel, cultivating the 80 acre parcel.
2. 1857 Plat Map showing two (2) parcels owned by JC-8739, 80 acres labeled "J Carpenter" and 35.325 acres labeled "JC"; the two are adjacent at the Northeast and Southwest corners, respectively. (Top center of the map.)
3. 1871 PLat Map showing same two parcels with other "Carpenter" properties as well - A (Thomas Alonzo) Carpenter-134978 (45 acres), directly east and L (Lafayette) Carpenter-134528 (15 acres), just north of the A. Carpenter parcel.
4. 1901 Plat Map showing the 80 acre parcel owned by Jacob Hower-135700, the 35.325 acre parcel owned by Elizabeth Carpenter Hower-135086, Alonzo Carpenter with 61 acres (includes former 15 acre parcel owned by Lafayette Carpenter), and new parcel of 60 acres owned by Lafayette, southwest of Jacob Hower. The Township and Range numbers are transposed on this map.
Note on all three Plat Maps that the Culley/Cully family owned the companion 80 acre parcel directly west of the Justin Carpenter 80 acre parcel. Two daughters of Levi Culley, Julia and Elizabeth, married two sons of Justin Carpenter, Timothy-134542 and John Hiram-134377, in Richland County, Ohio. Both couples relocated to the White Mound Settlement, Franklin Township, Sauk, Wisconsin immediately after the mariages.
5. I am also attaching the Certificate of Death of John Hiram Carpenter-134377. It records his place of birth as "Illinois" originally but stricken and replaced by "Ohio"; the certificate's informant, C. L. Carpenter, is Charles Levi Carpenter, John Hiram's son by Elizabeth Culley.
I have other marriage and death records (some are my sourced transcriptions) for Justin Carpenter family members and descendants if you would like them. I'll annotate each with your descendant number.

This is a very old cemetery taken care of by Franklin Township. There are no current burials in this cemetery. The burials are listed at the entrance of the cemetery.
The cemetery is also known as Franklin Rural Cemetery.
