Civil War wounded treated in Rochester Hospitals
Transcribed by: Gary Welch
The following story about Civil War wounded who were treated in Rochester hospitals is from the Rochester Republican dated June 16, 1864. (Most of these men were probably from NY Regiments)
LOCAL MATTERS
WEDNESDAY EVENING, JUNE 8, 1864
The Wounded Men at the Hospitals
The sick and wounded soldiers who arrived here yesterday P.M. were all safely transferred to the Hospitals in the street cars and hacks. - The hackmen who were not engaged volunteered to convey the wounded, and the cartmen generally came forward to convey baggage free.
Of the 375 [note: there are a few less than 375 names in the list] who came in the train, about 60 went to City Hospital [now called Rochester General] and the balance to St. Mary's. The latter hospital will have in a few days still more room for the reception of patients and they will arrive as fast as there is room for them.

"Bulletin of Cincinnati Historical Society" Genealogy Department, "Take
Everything Coolly and Quietly" by Mrs. William J. Cummins. Information from
an orginal letter from Ira Carpenter in the possession of Miss Mabel Young, a
granddaughter of Ira Carpenter and Charlotte Littleford Carpenter.Ira Carpenter was a descendant from a family that was prominent in public
affairs in the Granite State. Reaching adulthood, Ira went to Virginia and
began to teach school.
In Charlottesville, he married Charlotte Littlefield, whose father
John de Stoven Littleford operated the school in which Ira taught.
Three children were born to them (Mary, Cornelis and John) in Virginia.
He moved to Cheiot, Ohio in 1836 where three more children (Belle, Victoria
and Susan) were born. Ira's name appears as a teacher in the 7th District
School in Cincinnati. He later quit teaching to preach Masonry.
He traveled through the south lecturing on Masonry and selling Masonic Regalia.
His daughter Mary embroidered the Regalia using fine chenille thread and thread
made of finely coiled gold wire.
Enamored with the South, Ira in 1850 decided to resettle his family in Pass
Christian, Mississippi. The letter contains instructions with the classic
husbandry injunction "Take everything coolly and quietly." The dutiful wife
followed the instructions and then while waiting on the Public Landing of
Cincinati for boarding a New Orleans bound steamer, she excercised her womanly
prerogative of changing her mind.
Back to Cheviot went furniture, horses, carriage, boxes, barrels, Charlotte
Littleford Carpenter and her children. Ira accepted his wife's decision, but
continued his peripatetic existance, occasionally returning to Cheviot to visit
his family. Ira Carpenter was killed in an accident in 1856 in Tallahassee,
Florida. Ira was given the traditional elaborate Masonic funeral and was
buried in Tallahassee, in the south in which he had come to love.
His wife, Charrlotte died in 1893 and was buried in Cincinnati, Ohio. As for
the children, some remained in Cincinnati, while others moved away.

BIO:
Edwin arrived in Australia circa 1853 from America. Gold had recently been
discovered here and that could have been the reason for him coming.
He may have arrived on a ship named 'Alabama' ( to be confirmed) He married
Margaret Leslie, an emigrant from Aberdeen, Scotland. His occupation at that
time was stated as a painter ( ? of houses not portraits, I think).
Edwin returned home to visit his parents and was in the process of returning to
Australia when he disappeared. It is assumed he died somewhere in the USA.
He had his photograph taken in Brockport (NY) by photographer N.E. Baker and
sent it to his family in a letter. He was never heard from again.

UPDATE Jan 2020:
Incidently over the years I found out a lot about Edwin Reuben CARPENTER ( husbands gt gt gfather) b 1827 Jay Essex Co NY State. He got fined 5 shillings 1860 for not registering his first sons birth and he was moderately wealthy in the early 1860's maybe he did find payable gold ……… never found any ref to back that up...……...just suspicion on my part. I know when he left Australia in1869 and when he turned up in Brockport NY in 1871 when his father, Cyrus, died. Then he rode off onto the sunset and disappeared . A few odd ball deaths for him in Ancestrys public trees but none stack up. Not about to give up on him . Still cant confirm his brother name .Was supposed to be Darwin but ????

This IS NOT the Edwin Carpenter she is looking for. The guess is that to avoid debt in Australia & that his wife died in 1877 he never returned from visiting his Vermont family. The Edwin below was in Missouri in late 1877 and moved to Kansas about 1880.

Margaret was baptised by Rev. Andrew Gray which was witnessed by William
Simpson and Margaret Aiken. She came to Australia on the ship' Chance',
which departed Liverpool, UK, on 24 Jul 1852, & arrived in Melbourne 26 Oct
1852. Due to sickness on board, this vessel was quarantined til 11 Nov 1852.
Family 'myth' says she came here with 2 of her brothers. She was the only
Leslie on board this ship?? Have checked various records. Have yet to find any
male Leslies with the right parents
Nothing is known about how she met her husband or of
their life together. Edwin returned to America c 1870. Twice he sent her money
from America. She was living at Cardigan St. Carlton, Vic, Where she had a
grocers store. She died aged only 44 of pnumonia . She died Intestate and in
considerable debt. Papers pertaining to this refer to her as 'wife of Edwin R
Carpenter of parts beyonds the seas'. Maybe he was still alive then ??
She was buried in the same grave as her twins sons.
One of her grandsons, Phillip Leslie Larnach, was buried in the same grave in

Despite extensive searching have not located anything at all on him. He grew up
in Melbourne. Was only 9 years old when his mother died. Presumably he was
looked after by one of his sisters. He doesnt appear to have married. No idea
how long he was a miner. The OK mine was a copper mine in the 'never nevers',
on the southern end of the Palmer River Gold fields, to the north of Chilligoe.
It ceased operation abt 1910. Cyrus died aged only 38 on Enteric fever. The
cause of which is usually by drinking contaminated water. He doesnt appear to
have left a Will nor was any record of Probate or what ever found.
"Sally Melissa Carpenter" should be "Mary Jane Carpenter" per Margaret Motors
of New South Wales, Austrailia in a letter dated 27 Aug. 1997. She cites a
death certificate that gives the proper birth date.
Both names used as daughters with notes as above.
BIRTH: One record has birth as 11 Dec. 1829.MARRIAGE: Source for their marriage details was Rochester Republican

She died at the Massey residence on Maxon Street, Brockport. Buried by the
Fowler Funeral Home, 52, State St , Brockport. .
Her estate was handled by attorneys Wm B Hanks and Henry E McArthur.
Need to check further into that.
She lived in Brockport from 1844, 3 years before she married . I wonder where
she was before that?? MM. Her sister Mila and two brothers were taken to
Guilford circa 1831 to their grandfather's home. However, no mention of Mary
Jane!?
He was a carpenter and a painter also.
