Subject: Carpenter Genealogy
Dear John:
I finally have had some time to read over your Carpenter addition.  Here are some additions:
Cephas Carpenter was born on March 15, 1834.  He and his wife, my great grandmother, had two other children:
Ernest Corlin, born 3/21/1861 and died 9/16/1862
Male Carpenter (no name on the birth record), born 8/19/1863.  There is no record of his death so I presume that he died at birth.
My grandfather, George Boardman J. Rogers was born May 29, 1867.
My husband, Howard G. Bell, Jr., was born December 5, 1931.
My daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Marie (Pelletier) Bell was born March 15, 1975.
I have a copy of another Carpenter genealogy and wonder if you would be interested in me sending you a copy.  I would like to know where Doris Carpenter, who wrote the genealogy, obtained her information.  You can trace her family down to my generation.  I don't know how to locate these people.  Maybe you have a suggestion.  She never married, but she had brothers who did and whose children were born around the time I was born or even after.  She is the one who skipped a generation in my Carpenter line.
I haven't looked at the CD you sent yet, because we have been busy getting back from a trip and getting ready for another.  We will be gone until the beginning of October, except for a few days here and there.  I probably won't be able to sit down with it until after we get back.
I hope this new information will be of some help.
Marcia Bell

Obituary from the December 22, 1916 edition of the Plattsburgh Sentinel:

We chronicle with regret the death of Cutler C. Carpenter, Ellenburgh's oldest native born citizen, aged 86 years and 6 months. His father, Isaac (sic) Carpenter moved here from Ira, Vt., in 1826 to West Hill, and from there to the Center when it was a wilderness. For many years strong in the faith of the Father being a Methodist. He never used tobacco or liquor of any kind. His language was always such that it would not be amiss in a ladies parlor. A good man gone. His son Charles from Medford, Mass. and daughter Amelia Tolhurst of Detroit, Mich. were at the funeral Sunday. Rev. Barnard spoke very feelingly. The flowers were beautiful, the singing excellent.

Thank you for your quick response. William F. Drake was my 3rd great grandfather as I mentioned. From what I've read and his Civil War pension records, he was not exactly a nice guy. Cyrena left him around 1881 & went to CA. He heard she died & married Catherine Johnson. He later learned Cyrena was  very much alive, had to divorce Catherine & remarry her after Cyrena did pass on. This bit of information made the Louisville paper of the time.
Thank you again for the information.

OBIT:
The Malone Farmer
28 Jun 1916, pg 9

St. Regis Falls mourns the loss of one of its best, most patriotic and public-spirited citizens, who was one of the oldest and most active vusiness men of thie place.  Ogilvie S. Southworth passed away Thursday morning, June 22nd, at the home of his son, Clayton C. Southworth, with whom he had resided for a number of years.  He had been in failing health for the past two years, and for a number of momnths confined to the house.  His illness took a critical turn on Tuesday evening before his death.  Deceased was a native of Louisville, St. Lawrence county, and spent his early life there.  He served his country valiantly all through the civil war, enlisting in the 98th in October '61, and reenlisting in the 3rd Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps in 1864.  Between the time of expiration of his first second he was out of the service only for one day.  He went to St. Regis Falls from Norwood in 1885, where he was employed as a clerk in the company store of Hurd, Hotchkiss & McFarlane.  Later he entered the meat and grocery business for himself, which he conducted a part of the time in company, first, with his son, then with J. D. Smith, and later with H.  B. Douglass under the firm name of Douglass & Southworth.  In 1902 his son Clayton, succeeded him in the firm.  He was twice married but is survived only by his son and two grandchildren, miss Marion Douglass and Harold Southworth.  Franklin county had no more honorable and upright man in business or a more high-minded Christian gentleman.  He was one of the pillars of the St. Regis Falls Methodist Church for many years, serving as a member of the official board, as superintendent and teacher in Sunday school, as a member of the choir and in many other capacities.  His memory will abide long in the hearts of all who knew him.  Mr. Southworth was a member of Durkee Post, G. A. R. , and of St Regis Lodge of Odd Fellows.  His funeral took place from the M. E> church on Friday, the Post and Lodge attending in a body.  He was in his 78th year.

--Mrs. Clayton C. Southworth, wife of the bookkeeper at Symonds & Allison's store, committed suicide at her home in Howard block, Tuesday evening, by swallowing a quantity of carbolic acid.  It seems that Mrs. Southworth had been acting despondent for some time past, and becoming unnerved from some cause or other, took the fatal does while alone in her home.  A neighbor entering the house soon after discovered the situation at a glance and immediately summoned Drs. Oliver and Beaupre, who rendered what assistance they could, but she was past restoration and died in a very short time.  She was 30 years of age and was a asister of J. B. Herns, of this village.  Her mother resides at Brasher Fallls.  -- Gazette, Malone.
