Regiment was in camp in the locality of the Island. It is at the
entrance of the Savannah River and is now a great summer resort. The
fortress was built of oyster shells and cement.

Carpenter, George W., p. o. Chittenango Station,
Carpenter, George W., p. o. Chittenango Station, postmaster and merchant at Chittenango Station, was born at Orwell, Oswego county, N.Y., November 27, 1844, a son of Hannah and Reuben S. Carpenter. His paternal ancestors were from Connecticut, and his parents were among the earliest settlers in Hamilton county. They came to this county in 1846, where Reuben died June 26, 1898, his wife still living at the old homestead. Mr. Carpenter's education was acquired chiefly at the common schools in this vicinity and in 1877 he opened a general store at Port Byron, N.Y., remaining there until 1887, when he engaged in business at this place. He has been successful in business and enjoys the esteem of all who know him. Various minor official positions had come to him prior to his appointment as postmaster at Chittenango Station in May, 1888. August 27, 1865, he married Mary E. Shaver of Sodus, N.Y. Their children are as follows: Kitties, born October 18, 1867; Frank B., born April 8, 1873; Elmer R., born April 16, 1878, and Charles S., born October 7, 1871, and who died March 11, 1872. Mr. Carpenter's father, Reuben S. Carpenter, was born in the town of Hope, Montgomery county, N. Y., August 6, 1821. At the age of nineteen he purchased his time from his father and started in business for himself. He was a stonecutter by trade and went to work for the State on the Black River Canal, where he worked about a year. He then removed to Orwell, Oswego county, where he remained about two years. While at Orwell he was married to Hannah C. Pennock (a sister of the late Ebenezer Pennock). From Orwell he removed to Three River Point, where he resided about a year, removing from that place to Oak Hill. Here Mr. Carpenter was employed by Captain Cady one of the pioneers of this town. When the Erie Canal was enlarged Mr. Carpenter removed to Bolivar, where he had charge of the work of obtaining stone for the bridge and culvert at that place. From Bolivar he removed to his late residence north of Chittenango Station, where he resided up to the time of his death. The "Squire," as Mr. Carpenter was known hereabouts, was in early life a Democrat, but became a Republican at the formation of that party and has since been an active member. Some years ago he was elected justice of the peace, which was the only office he ever held. The immediate vicinity of the "Station" at the time he came here was practically an unbroken forest, and Mr. Carpenter's reminiscences of the early days of his residence here were very interesting. In 1863 Mr. Carpenter went to the State of Ohio, remaining there until 1864, when he was employed by the United States Government as foreman (with the rank of captain) in the government shipyards at Chattanooga, Tenn., where he remained until the close of the war, after which time he followed the business of carpenter and builder. Mr. Carpenter was the father of eight children, five of whom, George W., Mrs. Mathew Chapley, Mrs. George Bender, Mrs. George Olmstead, and William E. Carpenter, together with his wife and a brother, George H. Carpenter of Sheboygan, Wis., survive him.
Note: His daughter Harriet (Carpenter) Draper (1852-1936) also survived him (Reuben Carpenter). She was probably not mentioned in the above article due her estrangement from the family. Harriet died in Saskatchewan Canada in 1936.xxxxxxxxxxx

BIRTH: born at parents home on what is now Bolivar Rd located near the canal crossing
DEATH:
From the Madison County Times:
Harriet Carpenter Dies in Canada.
Mrs George Olmstead, S.R. received word Monday of the death of her
sister Harriet Draper at Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. Ms Draper
was 85 years old on February 5. she was born and educated and married
at Chittenango Stn. and was the daughter of Reuben and Hannah
Carpenter of that place. Mrs George Olmstead S.R. is the last of nine
children. Mrs Draper died Mar 19 and was buried the 22 of March at her
home.From Ken W.
When Harriet Francelia Carpenter was born on February 5, 1852, in Chittenango, New York, USA, her father, Reuben, was 30, and her mother, Hannah, was 28.
She married David Draper and they had three children together. She also had four sons and one daughter with Charles Jerome Draper. She died on March 20, 1936, at the age of 84.
Harriet left her husband David for his brother Charles in Sep 1878.
The families are believed to have been living in Oswego, NY at the time of the breakup. Charles and Harriet left their 7 children from both marriages behind and disappeared.
Charles and Harriet never married. David divorced Harriet in 1911. Charles’ wife Mary died in 1923 still searching for her lost husband.
The 1881 Canadian census shows Charles and Harriet with their son Bert living in Sidney Ontario. The Census indicated that Bert was born in Canada on July 2, 1879. When the families broke up in 1878 there was a rail line through Oswego that went north to Watertown NY. There was a ferry crossing to Kingston Ontario just northwest of Watertown. This is the route they probably took.
From Sidney they moved to Toledo, Ohio where son Elmer was born and died in 1882. By 1887 they were in Phillips, Wisconsin where their daughter Edna was born on July 1,1887 and their son Ernest was born on May 17,1891.
They were in Oconto, Nebraska by approximately 1892 where son, Cloyde was born on April 18,1895.
They decided to move to Battleford Saskatchewan and traveled by covered wagon from Oconto, Nebraska in 1902. They brought three of their four children with them - Ernest, Edna, and Cloyde.
Bert, their oldest son had married before his family moved to Canada. He stayed in Nebraska and eventually moved to California where he resided until his death at the age of ninety-seven, November 28, 1974.
Charles and Harriet Draper, Francis Draper, and Jim Jackson with their families teamed up with their three wagons. They met Andy Delong, who was traveling alone with his wagon, in the Dakota's.The trip by wagon train took three full months. As there were few roads, at times a wagon would sink to the axles, and the six or eight horses would be needed to budge it. Very little progress was made on some days, as spring thaws caused one wagon after another to become mired. Or a whipple tree or axle would split and need replacing. Nevertheless, it seemed the children who were cousins enjoyed most of the trip, it was an adventure.
After they crossed into Saskatchewan, the families rented a boxcar and the equipment and household goods were shipped to Saskatoon. From there they traveled overland to Battleford where they arrived June 2.
The Drapers first rented the Dick Laurie farm south-east of the barracks in Battleford, Saskatchewan. They applied for a homestead at Sec 2, Twsp.43 Range 18 W of the 3rd Meridian southwest of Battleford. Charles sowed wheat by hand right into the prairie grass and then plowed it under. The crop that year yielded forty bushels to the acre and as there were no elevators at that time, they had to put the wheat in bags, weigh it and take it to Battleford by wagon. They sold it to Prince's for sixty cents a bushel. They plowed with three horses and a walking plow and then walked behind harrows in dust and heat to work the land.
In about 1911, the Drapers moved to a quarter section opposite the Cleveland School. Eagle Hills District, Section 6, Township 43, Range 17, W.3, Saskatchewan. Ernest and Edna had attended school in Nebraska but only Cloyde attended Cleveland School after it was built. The family continued to reside at this location.Charles passed away January 12, 1933 and Harriet, March 20, 1936. They are buried in the West Eagle Hills Cemetery in Prongua SK.
Note: Charles and Harriet worked at the Indian Industrial school located in the old Government building near Battleford. It is believed that this was in 1902 until they could get established. Charles worked as a steam engineer and Harriet was a cook.
Charles and Harriet built their first home in Oct 1903 on their homestead. It was a 12' X 14' log building. This was attested to by Andy Delong on Charles application for his homestead patent. He received his homestead patent in 1907. In 1906 he had 4 horses, 3 cows, 6 pigs, a house, a hen house, 2 granaries, a well and 120 acres of fencing. He sold the property before 1911. Their second homestead near Cleveland school was started in 1911.
The Indian Story: Charles and Harriet had a special relationship with the plains (Cree) Indians in the area. They would stop by the homestead for refreshments and an occasional camp over on their way to "sundances" which two tribes held twice a year. They were from the Red Pheasant and the Sweet Grass Reserves and Charles and Harriet were midway between.

Subject: David Draper divorce from Harriet Carpenter
I have attached the divorce and marriage papers for David Draper. [Not retained]
A family secret was kept for many years by Charles and Harriet (Carpenter) Draper. Aside from their older children no one in their western family were aware that they were not married to each other. They told everyone that their marriage anniversary was Aug 6, 1865. This was in fact the anniversary of Harriet’s marriage to David Draper Charles brother. They deserted their spouses and from Oswego NY went north to Ontario in 1878. After the birth of their son Bert in 1879, they headed west arriving in Nebraska after some stops by 1895.
David and Harriet were not divorced until 1911 when David applied for a divorce. The judge granted an uncontested divorce to David but Harriet was not allowed to remarry. I am not sure that Harriet was even aware that divorce proceedings were taking place as the eastern family claimed not to know where they lived. A Nebraska family member gave evidence against her. Charles and Harriet had moved to Saskatchewan by 1902.
In any case Charles was not divorced from his first wife. She went to her grave not knowing where he disappeared to. Their family continued searching until with the help of Dan Draper jr, we solved the mystery in 1999.
Also, you will notice that the David remarriage was in Ontario and occurred months before his divorce was finalized.

12. Bert Henry Draper (Harriet Francelia Carpenter-2, Reuben S.-1) was born on 2 Jul 1879 in near Sidney, Hastings West, Ontario. Sidney is near present day Trenton ON. This is across Lake Ontario from Oswego NY. After 1924 he was an assistant steam engineer in Riverside, California. His father Charles also worked a a steam engineer for a while. He died on 15 Nov 1974 at the age of 95 in Riverside, California.
Bert Henry Draper and Laura Amanda Wood were married on 25 Dec 1901 in Oconto, Custer County, Nebraska. Laura Amanda Wood was born on 23 Jun 1882 in Cooperstown, New York. She died on 9 Jan 1984 at the age of 101 in Riverside, California. Laura married Bert Draper on December 25, 1901 in Nebraska.Their life was not easy. They lived at one time in a sod house and Bert took any kind of job to survive. Bert's family was from Northern New York, moved to Wisconsin and then to Nebraska. After Laura and Bert's marriage, his family moved to Canada.
In February 1903, Laura and Bert had a son who later died from complications at birth.
From one experience, Laura tell: of she and Bert hunting for skunks. The trick was to remove them from their dens, hit them over the head before they could douse their captors. For the skunk hides they got $3.00 a piece, a large amountof money in those days. The meat was cooked for the chickens. It smelled like pork and the fat was used to make soap, which floated like Ivory. Skunk oil was used to rub on the chest for chest colds, hot of course, and it worked as good as Vicks. In 1912, Laura's mother died, and Laura's brother who now lived in California persuaded her father to move there also. In September 1913, Laura and Bert also moved to Long Beach, following the majority of the Wood clan.
On April 9, 1918, their only daughter, Gladys, was born at Long Beach. Both had many jobs to support themselves. Both worked at the Kennebeck Hotel, Bert in the boiler room and Laura taking care of apartments, painting and hanging wallpaper.
In 1924, they moved to the Arlington area on Myers Street. Their three acres of land was bought from Allen Barnes, father of Thurman Barnes, and was back of the Mongomery home.
In 1945, they moved to Roosevelt Street where Laura has lived until the present(1984). Bert worked at the Riverside County Hospital as an Assistant Engineer in the boiler room. Bert passed away in 1974. Laura worked at Liberty School from 1929 to 1943 as the manager in the kitchen. When it was her 100th, the Riverside city sent a band which was named something to do with the Civil War -

He died in 1947 at the age of 76. Andrew Jackson DeLong (Andy) was born in 1872 in York County, Ont., now part of Metropolitan Toronto. As a boy of six or seven years the family moved to Michigan for his father was a farmer but a type of inventor as well. One of the inventions he was in the process of patenting was a rail car coupling. While demonstrating this invention to officials he slipped between rail cars and was killed. Andy was left head of the family of six at the age of 14, so his formal education was limited. The family moved west again to Wessington, S.D. and several moves later when the drought hit the Dakotas in the ‘90's, Andy was to immigrate to Saskatchewan, Canada.
In March, 1902, he started north alone with the covered wagon and his good team of Belgians. Two weeks later he met the Draper-Jackson wagon train headed to Saskatchewan from Oconto, Nebraska. Three wagons were included in the Draper-Jackson train and extra help and companionship were very necessary to everyone especially Andy DeLong.
Edna Draper, then nearly 15, her parents, Charlie and Hattie Draper and younger brothers, Ernest and Cloyde, had a family wagon. An older brother, Bert, remained in Nebraska as he had recently married. Jim Jackson, his wife Mary, Sons Harry and Fred and two young daughters, Mabel and Aggie, travelled in another wagon, while Francis Draper had a third wagon.
Mabel and Aggie were later to become Mrs. George and Mrs. Tom Hennessey of Rural Battleford. The trip by wagon train took three full months.

In 1940 tragedy struck when their home was destroyed by fire, so they moved to North Battleford, where they still reside.

BIRTH: Ernest Draper was born May 17, 1891 in Phillips, Wisconsin, U.S.A. His
family moved to Oconto, Nebraska in 1894. He then came to Canada to
the Battleford area with his parents, Charles and Harriet Draper, when
they moved from Oconto in 1902. He was ten years old at the time but
can vividly remember the trip by covered wagon. He claims to have
walked most of the way because the children used to run along the
railway tracks and pick up bits of coal and whatever they could find
to use for fuel in the cook stove in the covered wagon where his
mother used to cook the meals and bake bread.
They first lived near Battleford and then moved to a quarter section
in the Cleveland School District in 1904. The school was built in the
early 1900's but Ernest and Edna did not attend, however, their
younger brother, Cloyde, did attend Cleveland School. As he grew
older, he was able to assist his father in Farming the land and went
on a trip in search of land in Fort Fraser and Vanderhoof, B.C. area
in 1919. He didn't find land so returned to help his father on the
farm.
As time went on and social activities took place at the school, he was
able to get a glimpse of a young lady named Lillian Maud Liggins.
Lillian, although very shy, used to play the piano for some of the
school activities and he would always keep an eye on her. He then
began to court her and after about a year,,they were married on April
19-?9. The, first resided with his wife's parents (Robert Leonard
and Martha Annie Liggins) after which they moved into their own little
home not far from Cleveland School. By then, Ernest and Lillian had a
daughter, Elsie May, born May 5, 1930, and a son, Ernest James, born
January 7, 1932.
In 1933, Ernest's father passed away so he and his family moved in
with his mother to help with the farm work-. His mother passed away in
1936. The 1930's had been very bad years for everyone in the area
and, as a result, a mortgage had built up on the fathers's farm and
Ernest was left to pay this off. However, because of seven years
without crops, the mortgage continued to grow with interest piling up,
back taxes and seed grain liens were laid against the land. Things
looked hopeless The dust storms were so bad you would have to light
the coal oil lamp in the middle of the day because of it being so
dark. Horses were turned loose to try and find feed and Ernest had
stacked Russian thistle while green for the cows to eat as there was
absolutely no other feed to get. They would stand at the stack and
eat whatever they wanted. Ernest went and got dry wood off a road
allowance, took it home and sawed it into stove wood lengths. The
next day, he loaded it into a wagon box and took it to North
Battleford fifteen miles away to sell in order to buy groceries. After
traveling up and down the streets trying to sell it, He got the large
sum of $2.00 - that was the last straw!
Finally, in 1945, Ernest had a fairly good crop. However, a snowstorm
came in September and he was unable to harvest so had to sell the
cattle, pigs and turkeys as there was no feed. The nine head of
cattle sold for $264.00 and he had to pay have them hauled to, town.
That December, 1945, Ernest, with his wife and familv moved to North
Battleford because of the poor crop, their daughter was alreadv
attending High School in Battleford which was added expense, their son
would soon be attending High School, and they were expecting another
child. They also had Lillian's mother residing with them as she was
in poor health Then on March 30, 1946, another daughter was born
Eileen Muriel. This event brought a lot of happiness and joy, to the
whole family.
Ernest and Lillian both worked at whatever work they could get as well
as working the farm. Ernest obtained employment as a nightwatchman at
Sterling Millwork which he did for many, many, years, both Lillian and
Ernest cared for an apartment block for twenty-five years, and Lillian
did day work whenever she could. After movinq to town, thev had a
good crop on the farm so managed to pay off the mortgage, taxes, seed
grain and get everything clear.xxxxxxx more
