16206. Martin Van Buren Thompson

Martin was on of the prominent and successful farmers of Maine Township, in Outagamie County, Wisconsin. He owned and operated a good farming property of forty acres located on section 5. He came to Wisconsin in 1852 with his parents and settled in Winnebago County, and later moved to Outagamie County. He lived at home with his parents until his enlistment in the Union Army in 1861. He was a member of Company D, First Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry where he served for 2 years until he was discharged due to disability. He was at home for 3 months and recovered and re-enlisted in the Third Wisconsin Cavalry, Company G, which he was connected until the close of the war. He was engaged in frontier duty when the close of the war came. He was discharged on October 27, 1865. He saw some of the bloodiest battles of the entire war and always displayed bravery under fire. Among his engagements mentioned: Perrysville, Stone River, Chattanooga, while he was in the infantry and his services in the cavalry on the frontier included battles with the Indians at Cottonwood, Sand Boot, Plum Creek and Walnut Creek.
After his, return from the war he remained at home until he was thirty-three years of age, and on October 3, 1874, he was married to Miss Esther .Ann Watson, born September 22, 1855, daughter of Thomas and Roxey (Chambers) Watson, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson have had five children: Ella, who married George Diemel, living in Outagamie county and has four children; Meade, who is married and living in this county, having three children; Ira, who is living in Clintonville, Wisconsin, is married and. has two children; Thomas, who is married and has two children, residing in Outagamie county; and Stephen, also residing in this county, has one child. After Mr. Thompson's marriage he purchased eighty acres of wild land near Hortonville, where he lived for four years, and he then sold and moved to Hortonville. In September 1881, he bought the land on which he now lives, then a tract of eighty acres, which he put under cultivation with the exception of ten acres, but later deeded forty acres to his son, for whom he had also built a modern frame residence in 1909. Mr. Thompson's own house was built in 1901, at which time he also erected a large barn, and he has brought his land into an excellent state of cultivation, being engaged in stock raising and general farming. Mr. Thompson is a stanch Republican in his political views, and he has served for ten or twelve year as a member of the board of supervisors.

Number 8571 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 798.
Family on page 798 (# 1728).  Residense, Middlebury, PA.

BIRTH: The CM above has one birth date (listed as 29 Nov.1844) and the book
called "PRESIDENTS, SOLDIERS, STATEMEN" regarding noteables from Pennsylvania
has 28 Sept. 1843 has birth date.  Parents are the same.

MARRIAGE: Place and date from the "P., S., S." book above.  Children listed
match the CM book.

CHILDREN: Children in both books match except the CM lists a Clarence in the
spot listed for James C. (in the "P.,S.,S.") and the CM lists a James as the
youngest which the other does not.   Speculation; Clarence may have been
James Clarence?

MILITARY: The book "PRESIDENTS, SOLDIERS, STATEMEN"  indicates that James D.
Carpenter enlisted at the age of 26 in April of 1863 from Midllebury, PA as a
private in Co. A, 1st. Batt., Volunter Infantry.  from this enlistment he was
discharged the next September.  He immediately re-inlisted at Middlebury in

Landing, unloading army supplies and received a final discharge at Alexandria,
VA in June 1865.  He fought at Fort Steedman, and in the final assault on
Petersburg on April 2, 1865.  A brother of Mrs. Carpenter, Barton Brown, went
out from PA and died in the service.
