===============================
BIOGRAPHICAL - by John T. Brown, Church of Christ
LEEWELL L. CARPENTER Was born in Norton, Summit county, Ohio, on the 10th day of December, A.D. 1832. His parents were poor and he grew up without many of the advantages of the more favored boys in the neighborhood.
He, however, received a common school education, and his parents managed to send him to Mt. Union Academy, where he prepared himself so he was able to teach in a district school, saving the money that he earned in teaching, and helped by his parents, what they could, he entered Bethany College in the autumn of 1855, where he received instruction from Alexander Campbell, W. K. Pendleton, N. C. Milligan, Robert Richardson, and other members of the splendid faculty of Bethany College. It is the boast of Bro. Carpenter that he cannot remember the time when he did not hear the primitive gospel preached by such men as Alexander Campbell, the Greens, the Haydens, and that splendid army of pioneer preachers, who in an early day, sounded out the word all over the old Western Reserve in Ohio.
On the 14th day of August, A. D. 1853, at the home church in Norton, he made public confession of faith in Jesus Christ, and surrendered his all to the loving Savior. The same day he was immersed into Christ by A. B. Green, and took his membership in the Church of Christ. In the spring of 1857, he went to Fulton county, Ohio, and began preaching the gospel in school houses, barns, groves, private houses, any where he could get the people together.
From 1857 to 1861 - four years - he had, with his own hands, baptized in that one county more than 1,000 persons, and organized seven congregations, which are now strong churches, wielding a mighty influence for primitive Christianity.
On May 16, 1861, he was married to Miss Mary E. Funk, a young sister that he had baptized three years before. God gave them seven children; one is in the better land. Four boys and two girls are living; all are honored and respected citizens, and all are members of the church of Christ. In 1868 he removed to Wabash, Indiana, where he still resides.
He was the first president of both the Ohio and the Indiana Sunday School Associations. He is identified with all the missionary enterprises of the church. For ten years he was State Sunday School Evangelist in Indiana. During these years he organized a large number of schools and then organized many of them into churches. He also held Institutes and Normals in nearly every county in the state.
He was also state evangelist of the Indiana Christian Missionary Society for years. One peculiar feature of his work was the grouping of weak churches and locating ministers for each group. He also established quite a number of new churches. The First church in Fort Wayne is one of them. He was the first life member of the Foreign Missionary Society. He is a life member or director of every missionary organization of our people. He is also an enthusiastic worker in the Y.P.S.C.E.
He was one of the founders of Bethany Assembly, the National Chautauqua of the Church of Christ, and for many years has been its president. He has quite a record as a church dedicator, having dedicated nearly 600 houses of worship, and raised more than $2,000,000 to pay for these houses. While but a small part of his time has been spent in evangelistic work, yet he has baptized more than 7,000 penitent believers. Although seventy years old he is as strong and able to work as at any period of his life. He is doing as hard work and as much of it, and standing his work [458] just as well as he ever did. He has traveled and preached in many of the states and territories of the Union, and in the King's Dominions. The older he grows the stronger is his faith in the word of God. He believes the old Jerusalem gospel with all his heart, and greatly delights to preach it. Although a preacher for forty-six years, he says that he has never had but one vacation, and that was when he had the typhoid fever. He says that he expects to make Wabash, Ind., his home until he goes to heaven.

Sgt Lafayette B. Price
Birth: unknown
Death: Aug. 8, 1864
Sgt Co K 38th Ohio.
The battlefield interment record shows Sgt Price died August 8, 1864 and was orig. bur. about 5 miles NW of Atlanta in a group of 33, most from 14th Army Corps. He was with other men who died in the first half of August and were involved in action between Turner's Ferry and Utoy Creek.
The Ohio Roster Roll of Honor shows him as killed in battle of Jonesboro, Sept. 1, 1864. But I believe this is an error based on the battlefield interment record and the location of his grave in the cemetery between John Fuller and William Woods.

BIRTH-RESIDENCE: THE DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT BURDICK; p. 318.

16748. Drusilla M. Carpenter

Her married name may have been Coon, but no information is recorded in Lydia
Carpenter's Bible.

16750. Lydia M. Carpenter

Lydia was Grandad Roby's Grandmother, it was reported that she was a devout
Seventhday Adventist.  While the family lived in Meeker Grandad Roby and his
Grandmother Lida attended the Methodist church there and even had their name in
the corner stone of the old church, per Eloise McMahon. The 1880 cenus shows
her name as Lydia and states she was living in Medicine Lodge, KS next to her
daughter Amelia and that she was born in New York as were both of her parents.

Additional:  Melvin Pyeatt the great-great-grandson of Lydia Carpenter has
possession of a Bible belonging to George Hilton and Lydia Carpenter Hilton.
It records Lydia's birth date, her parent's births and deaths, and the births
and a few deaths of brothers and sisters.  It also records that her grandfather
died in 1839 or 1837.  Lydia's lineage apparently was German at least on her
mother's side.  The style of handwriting is that of the common German script of
the nineteenth century.  Therefore whoever taught her to write--possibly her
mother--was familiar with the German script.  As well, the Bible contains
several scraps of a German language newspaper printed in Pottsville, Iowa and
bearing the date 1882.  This is the year her mother is recorded as dying in the
notations in the Bible.  I surmise it was her mother who could read German.

DEATH:date take from Hilton-Roby family bible in possession of Fern DuBose.

Corrections and additions submitted by : D. Niler Pyeatt of Plainview, TX.

George O. Hilton

The 1855 Wisconsin State census (this was too faint to copy) shows
the George Hiltons in Lafayette Co, in the town of
Argyle, page #04, the record lists 1 male & 1 female living in the house hold
(George would have been 23 at the time).  There was another George Hilton in
Wisconsin in the 1855 state census, Polk Co, p.# not given, town of LeRoy,
this record was a large family, so I do not believe it is our George Hilton.

The 1880 census shows George
and Lydia living in Medicine Lodge, Barbour Co, Kansas on south main street
next to his daughter Amelia Roby and family he was 48 at the time.  The record
states that he was born in New York as was his father, his Mother was born in
Germany.

Samantha J. Sells-Hissey

Samantha is a bit of a mystery.  While listed as a wife, she is not found in the 1900 or 1910 US Census with Stephen.  In one he is a widow and the other he is divorced.  Technically they are both correct.

Biography of Edward H. Ehle (1841 to [past 1891])
Provided by Darci (Djohns genealogy web page) Daniel H. Weiskotten 8/10/1999.
Edward Ehle (1841 to [past 1891]) From Biographical History of Clark and
Jackson Counties (Wisconsin), Lewis Publishing Co., pages 307-308
Edward A. EHLE, of Abbotsford, Clark County [Wisconsin], was born in Cazenovia,
Sullivan [Madison] County, New York, June 8, 1841, the son of Harrison
Ehle, deceased, who was born in the Mohawk Valley, near Canajoharie.
In 1851 he emigrated to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and settled in the wild
woods of Forrest Township.  He and his sons cleared eighty acres and were
surrounded with Indians, mostly the Winnebago and Manitowoc tribes.
Edward A., our subject, was reared to farm life, and received his education in
a log cabin, with pine-logs for seats, and with a shed roof made of scoops. He
was a soldier in the late war in Company H, Thirty-seventh
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, served two and a half years, and was in the
battles of Cold Harbor, Bermuda
Hundred, siege of Petersburg, Weldon Railroad, Poplar Grove Church, Fort Hall,
and others. He was not seriously wounded, but had a slight flesh wound on his
neck over the jugular vein, and also had several holes shot in his clothing,
and on the Weldon raid had his canteen split open.
After the war Mr. Ehle resumed farming on the old homestead until January,
1874, when he came to Colby, [Wisconsin] this county, but settled just across
the line in Marathon County. Wild game was then plentiful, and he shot
hundreds of deer and a few bear, but declining health caused him to leave this
farm, and in 1888 he removed to Colby.
On May 20, 1890, he settled in Abbotsford, (WI) where he engaged in the saloon
and hotel business. He keeps a quiet house, and never sells to an intoxicated
man.   Mr. Ehle was married November 30, 1869, to Miss Melissa
Carpenter, a daughter of Henry and Maria (Westenhouse) Carpenter. The father is
deceased, and the mother now lives with our subject.
Mr. and Mrs. Ehle have four children: Edna, born October 7, 1870; Edward A.,
November 25, 1873; Marshall P., April 1, 1882, and Madge, January 21, 1884.
While in Green Township, Marathon County, Mr. Ehle was a member of the Side
Board. Socially he is a member of the G.A.R., and politically votes for the man
regardless of party.
