18620. Joseph Carpenter

FSFTID #  M12N-3L2

NOTE:
Some say he was born in Virginia, but clearly of Washington County, Ohio.
Some say he was deceased by 1897 his son's death year.
Some say he died about the time of his sons's death.
A lot of speculations with little research and documentation.

COMMENT:
He is NOT the Joseph M. Carpenter born 21 May 1828 of, Monroe County, Ohio who died on 13 Feb 1899 (aged 70) in Monroe County, Ohio. That Carpenter line is a Zimmerman line.

Unfortunately this is a submission that I made some years ago, and I am trying
to fix the mistake now.
The information for Andrew and Rebecca is incorrect and had been passed to my
by a family member.....who
said I think their names were Andrew Carpenter (correct) and Rebecca
Paul......last name is correct but
the first name is still unknown and I do not at this point know of any Paul
family members in Roane Co. W
VA.   When I found an Andrew and Rebecca Carpenter, I assumed that that was the
correct
individual.......I didn't do my homework and now I am finding that it is a
great struggle to find
anything relating to that particular Carpenter/ Paul union.  The only one that
I have found to date is
William Carpenter who married a Nelly Carpenter in 1838.  Much too early to be
correct.   William's
middle initial is A.....could have been nicknamed Andy if his middle name
fit......but still doesn't work
because there would have been  several other children from that marriage.  They
are no where to be found
in the county as of 1855.   It is my belief that it had to be a young marriage
because there is only one
other sibling , a sister, and I don't even know who she is.  Family tells be
that Emma and her sister
were orphaned and raised by a neighbor....it is more like divorced or
abandoned, I think.
There is an Andrew Carpenter , son of Joseph and Anna Miller Carpenter who had
land  grants in the Putnam
Co. area.  He gives or sells property to an Alexander A. Carpenter in 1853, and
obtains another land
grant in 1855, the yr that Emma was born.  From that date until 1860, I know
nothing of him.  He as left
the area (Civil War unrest) and is alone in Berrien Co., Michigan.   By 1870 he
is married to Valira and
has children.
Members of Andrews family fought for the south and ended up in prison camp.
One brother, Peter, married
for about 12 yrs , has 4 sons and is divorcing his wife....her complaint is the
activities that he is
involved in with guerrilla warfare against the U.S.
It is odd that Andrew seems to have chosen a different route and went north.
Whether he differed in his
political beliefs with his brother, I have no idea.... or maybe (26 yrs in the
1860 Census) he just
deserted the Paul woman.......anyway...another bad note is that the Census
taker for Putnam Co., in 1860
took only initials with the  surnames and to top it off the page is so bleached
out that it can hardly be
read (could be bad photography).  Terry found it first.  We still can not be
sure that it is her, but she
is listed as E Carpenter, H/H , two daughters, one 6 and the other E.M. 5
(possibly Emma) and an E. PAUL
female is living with her.  It most probably is her so might be Elizabeth Paul
and her sister Eliza
Paul.       Cabell Co., Courthouse was occupied by  Union Soldiers, who , for
what ever reason, destroyed
the marriage records.  I have not seen any Court divorce for them as
yet......so you see I am in quite a
dilemma trying to find any real evidence.  If any thing can go wrong on a
search, it has happened here.
I am hoping to find some scrap of something somewhere that will put the two of
them together.
It is so Very Very thoughtful of you to have gone to so much trouble on my
behalf!
Thanks to you both,
Sandy

Subject: RE: Benjamin Carpenter married Mary Bailey on October 31, 1848 in Indiana
Good Morning John!

Thanks for the advice.
I have ordered my DNA Kit. Here is the latest work on my Carpenter Line:

I can’t seem to find any clues to my line of Carpenters any further back than Vigo County, Indiana on October 31, 1848 when Benjamin Carpenter (my g-grandfather) married Mary Ann Bailey. I visited Vigo and Sullivan Counties again in November and found a few post-marriage details but can find no burial place for Ben and Mary. Ben married Rebecca Schoonover in Sullivan County on Sept. 27, 1877. Don't know what happened to Mary Ann. Anyway, here is some information I have so far.

 Ben and Mary's children were:
1849 Harriet Evelyn born in Vigo Co.
1852 Alonzo born in Vigo Co.
1854 Mariah born in Vigo Co.
1856 Sarah born (?) Indiana (I would assume Vigo Co.)
1858 George born in Vigo Co.
*1863 Charles Aaron (My grandfather) born in Vigo Co.
                1877 Ben Marries Rebecca
                ???? Dennis is born

I found a record of a Benjamin Carpenter who died on Jan. 29, 1901 in Hymera, Indiana (Sullivan County) but no burial information. My cousin thinks this is not my Benjamin but the places and ages seem to work  For me so I still think it is. I shall continue.

Charles Aaron Carpenter (My g-father) married Sarah Jane Houghton in Edgar County, Ill. on 23 January, 1887. Their children were:
                Benjamin Stapleton      b. Nov 11, 1887
                Maudie Maria            b. Aug 08, 1889
                Charles William         b. Mar 13, 1891
                Grover Cleveland        b. Jun 20, 1892
                Mary Matilda            b. Sep 06,1894
                Lizzie Euradica         b. Mar 06, 1897
                Oather Houghton         b. Nov 16, 1900
*Don Dillard (My dad)    b. Apr 16, 1902
Leon Ashford (His twin) b. Apr 16, 1902
                Katie Lenora (Living)   b. Jun 26, 1905
                Infant Son (Died)       b. Nov 21, 1906

Don Dillard Carpenter (My father) married Lillie May Sturdivant on July 30, 1924 and for the life of me I haven't been able to find out where.I know it was in Southern Illinois somewhere. I'll find it someday!

Don and Lillie's children were:
                Charles Emerson         b. Sep 04, 1925
                Roy Eugene              b. May 09, 1927
                Marjorie Louise         b. Oct 04, 1929
                Reuben Donald           b. Dec 06, 1931
                George Taze (Me)        b. Jan 11, 1934
                Irma Kathryn            b. Dec 31, 1935

George Carpenter married Irene Electa Lawrence on Jan 11, 1952 in Mercer County, Illinois. Our children are:
                Michael Allen           b. Jan 08, 1953
                Teresa Lee              b. Jun 13, 1956
                Lorraine Sue            b. Apr 20, 1960

Mike and Terri had no children. Alas! My Carpenter line ends here.
Lori Sue Carpenter married Timothy Glenn Bausch on Nov 11, 1978 in
Mercer County, Illinois. Their children are:
                Ryan Michael            b. Oct 02, 1981
                Dustin Glenn            b. Mar 09, 1986
                Kodi Lynn                b. Nov 11, 1990

18667. Jacob Carpenter

BIO:
http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-mathias.htm
Jacob Carpenter was born ca 1778/79 in either the Deep Creek community or Hunting Creek area of Surry Co, NC (now Yadkin County).
Jacob Carpenter went to Ashe County with his parents, and left there ca 1800-1805 for Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC. He married Margaret --- ca 1800/05 in either Ashe or Burke County.
See his own page for additional information.

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Jacob Carpenter (c1779) and Margaret --- of Ashe, Burke, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery Co, NC
I (Marty Grant) am a 5th Great Grandson of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter.
Jacob Carpenter was born ca 1778/79 in either Rowan County, NC (where his father was in 1775) or in the Hunting Creek area of Surry County (now Yadkin) where his father was in 1782. I think Surry is more likely. Jacob is a proven son of Mathias Carpenter and Elizabeth Miller .
Jacob was apparently home with his parents in Surry County for the 1786 and 1790 census. The Carpenter family moved to the New River Valley and settled in the Rich Hill Creek area shortly after 1790, and Jacob was with them. This was Wilkes County until 1799 when Ashe County was formed.
Jacob was apparently home with his parents for the 1800 census in Ashe County, NC.
On 7 Nov 1800, Jacob Carpenter received a land Grant for land on the Left side of Rich Hill Creek in Ashe County. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book B page 290).
On 27 Nov 1800, Jacob Carpenter entered 100 acres on the north side of the North Fork of New River on Rich Hill Creek. (Ashe Co, NC Land Entries # 270).
Right around this timeframe (1800-1805), Jacob Carpenter did two important things. I don't know which order he did them in though. First (or second?) he married Margaret --- before 1805. Second (or first?) he moved to the Three Mile Creek area of Burke County, also before 1805.
I have not been able to determine Margaret's maiden name, nor find any strong clues about what is was. I also don't know if they married in Ashe County and then moved to Burke, or if Jacob found Margaret after moving to Burke and married her there. Recently, I've seen several researchers listing Margaret as a "Davis", but I have no clue where that came from, and neither do any of them when I ask.
Although Jacob moved to old Burke County (in an area that became Yancey County in 1833, Mitchell County in 1861, and Avery County in 1911), he did not sell off his Ashe County lands until years later. Presumably his father and / or brothers-in-law looked after his Ashe County land for him, renting it out or whatever. Jacob's brother-in-law William Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm> had moved that area of old Burke County several years before, and that is probably why Jacob followed, after hearing favorable reports of the land, or visiting it himself.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1805 Burke County tax list. He was listed with one taxable (himself) and 80 acres. I haven't located the deed, or land grant, where he obtained this land. Most of the early Burke County records were destroyed during the Civil War.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1810 census in Burke County, NC. He was the only Carpenter listed in Burke at that time. He was living next to his brother-in-law William Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm>.

Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1815 Burke County tax list in Captain White's company. He was listed twice, once for 77 acres on Three Mile Creek, and $80 value, and 1 white taxable, and 0 blacks. He was also listed for 100 acres on Three Mile Creek and $100 value and no taxables on that land. I don't know the origin of this land, as most early Burke County records were destroyed during the Civil War.
Jacob Carpenter was also listed on the 1815 Ashe County tax list. He was in Captain Sutherland's district, and listed between his brothers-in-law Jonathan Miller and Joseph Roten . He was listed with 100 acres, at $50 value and zero polls (he didn't live there) and his land bordered state land. A transcribed version of this tax list shows him as "Jonathan Carpenter".
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1820 census in Burke County. His brother-in-law William Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm> was two houses away.

On 21 Sep 1832, Jacob Carpenter "of Burke" gave his 100 acres of Ashe County land to "my son David" of "Ashe" for "natural love". The deed described the land as the same entered by Jacob Carpenter in 1800 on Left Fork of Rich Hill Creek. Jacob's son David Carpenter lived in Ashe a couple of years before rejoining his father in old Burke. Jacob's nephew Jacob Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-jacob-graham.htm> witnessed the deed, along with Reuben Peppers. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book M page 318).
The section of Burke County where Jacob and family resided was cut off in 1833 to form Yancey County.
On 17 Apr 1835, Isaih Franklin of Yancey Co, NC made a deed with Samuel Calloway, Jacob Carpenter, Samuel Franklin and Samuel Carpenter (Jacob's son) for one house saddle and bridle, and household furniture and farming tools, all for $16. This was apparently a mortgage deed, whereby Isaiah Franklin was borrowing money with all those items as his collateral. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 64 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Jacob's parents died in 1835 in Ashe County. Jacob's father Mathias Carpenter had large land holdings, and he left no Will. On 28 Oct 1835 several deeds were made by the various heirs dividing the land up amongst themselves.
The heirs were listed as Jonathan Miller, Margaret Miller (wife of Jonathan), Franky Davis, Jacob Davis (son of Franky), Jacob Carpenter, Joseph Roten, Mary Roten (wife of Joseph), Christena Carpenter and David Carpenter. (See Mathias' page for a complete accounting).
Jacob and the other heirs deeded David Carpenter 100 acres on Buffalo Creek. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165)
Jacob and the other heirs deeded David Carpenter 5 acres somewhere. (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165)
Jacob and the other heirs deeded Joseph Roten 300 acres on the North Fork of New River including the "Big Spring". (Ashe Co, NC Deed Book G page 165).
Jacob Carpenter apparently kept 150 acres in Ashe County, on Laurel Fork for himself, and sold it many years later (1855).
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1835 Congressional Voter List as a voter at Oakes Precinct in Yancey County.
On 28 Dec 1836, Jacob Carpenter was mentioned in a land grant to William Davis Sen <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm> (his brother-in-law) as a neighboring land owner for land on Three Mile Creek. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 156 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On the same date (28 Dec 1836), Jacob was again mentioned in a land grant, this one to his son William Carpenter for land on North East side of Doe Hill. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 196 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
On 3 Jul 1838, Jacob Carpenter was mentioned as an adjoining land owner in a land grant to Levi Carpenter (his son), for land on Doe Hill. (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 365 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County. His brother-in-law William Davis was not listed nearby this time (though they were still neighbors).

Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 130 acres, valued at $150, and he had no white polls (he was over age, apparently), and his tax was 75 cents. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 0 acres (he had 130 acres in 1840), valued at $0, and he had no white polls, and two black polls (apparently slaves). (What happened to his land?) (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9, November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
Jacob Carpenter made his Will on 8 Sep 1849 in Yancey County, though he did not die until seven years later. His Will is recorded in Yancey County Will Book 1 page 111:
In the name of God, Amen. I JACOB CARPENTER, formerly a resident of Surry County, but for many years past a resident of Burke now Yancey County in the State of North Carolina being advanced in years infirm of body, but of a sound mind and disposing memory, Calling to mind the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death do hereby make ordain and publish, this as my Last Will and Testament. To wit:

PYATTE to be equally divided among them, share and share alike.
Item the sixth. I constitute and appoint LEANDER PYATTE Executor of this Will. I have this the 8th day of September in the year of our Lord (1849) made ordained and published this as my Last Will and Testament, revoking all former Wills and have signed the same in the presence of each of each other and in the presence of the testator.
JACOB CARPENTER (seal)
Attest. WILLIAM DAVIS
GEORGE W. DAVIS
Jacob's nephew William Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william-graham.htm> and William's son George W. Davis were the witnesses to his Will.
Jacob Carpenter was listed on the 1850 census in Yancey County, NC between his son Levi Carpenter and his son-in-law Leander Pyatt. Jacob's grandson Thomas D. Carpenter was residing with them.

On 10 Dec 1855, Jacob Carpenter sold 150 acres in Ashe County, NC to John Graybeal. The land was on Laurel Fork. Though the deed does not say so, I believe this was land he inherited from his father. Witnesses were Joseph Roten (Jacob's brother-in-law) and David Graybeal.
Jacob Carpenter died in Yancey County on 18 Jul 1856. His grandson (and namesake) Jacob Carpenter wrote of him in his "Anthology of Death ": (some punctuation added by me)
"Jacob Carpenter age 86 dide July 18 1856. Wars farmer and coper to make hoses and md brand and never hade drunker in his family and never had Dockor in his family. No sickness. ra 12 children"
Properly translated, Jacob said that his grandfather died at age 86 (which was wrong, he was only 77 or 78), and that he was a Farmer and Cooper and made "hoses" (houses?) and he made Brandy but had no drunks in his family, and no one ever needed a Doctor. He raised 12 children (only nine are known, but census records show there were at least 2 more, who probably died young).
Jacob Carpenter is probably buried somewhere near Three Mile Creek. His sister and brother-in-law Frances and William Davis <../davis/wnc/davis-william.htm> are buried in a small cemetery on Three Mile Creek, and it is possible that Jacob and other family members are there as well, in unmarked graves.
Widowed Margaret Carpenter was listed by herself on the 1860 census in Yancey County. However she wasn't alone by much, her grandson Jacob Carpenter was in the next house, and on the other side was her son Levi Carpenter.

CARPENTER MARGARET    71 F W                              NC                   1788/1789
Mitchell County was created in 1861 from the section of Yancey where the Carpenters lived.
I did not locate Margaret on the 1870 census though she must have been in Mitchell somewhere.
Margaret died on 5 Jun 1875 in Mitchell County. Her grandson Jacob also wrote of her death in his writings:
"Margit Carpenter age 87 dide Jun 5 1875. Wars good womin. Good for pore, she did not have no bed to slep on when she was marid. She slip on der skin til mard but that lok lik hard times. No womin had to li on derskins when was mared."
In other words, she was age 87 when she died (which was correct). She was a good woman, she was poor, and had no bed to sleep on before she married, and had to sleep on a deer skin until she married Jacob Carpenter. "No woman had to lie on deerskins when she was married".
Margaret is probably buried next to Jacob, wherever that might be.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Children
Jacob and Margaret Carpenter had nine proven children, and at least two more are indicated by early census records. This makes eleven. Jacob Carpenter (1833) (Grandson of the elder Jacob) said that his grandfather raised "12" children. Jacob (Sr) named nine children in his Will of 1849. The other three apparently died before then.

29752. Sophia Carpenter

http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-jacob-yancey.htm
Sophia Carpenter was born ca 1809/10 in Burke (later Yancey, later Mitchell, now Avery) Co, NC. I don't know who she might have been named after.
Sophia was apparently home with her parents for the 1810, and 1820 census.
Sophia Carpenter married Gabriel English during the 1820-1830 timeframe, in Burke County, NC (no marriage record found). Gabriel was born ca 1808/09, and other researchers list him as a child of Henry English and Rachel Oakes.
Gabriel English and his parents, etc, lived in the section of old Burke that became McDowell County in 1842.
Regarding the English family, I fount that there were none in Burke County in 1790, though several were in nearby county of Rutherford.
In 1800, there were still no English families in Burke.
In 1810, Henry English was the only one listed in Burke County, and with apparent wife and several children, including 3 sons under age 10, which would include son Gabriel (c1809). They were just a few households from Jacob Carpenter, so in or near the Three Mile Creek area.
In 1820, Henry English was still in Burke, but clearly had moved to the area of Burke that later became McDowell County. He had two boys with him age 10-15, born ca 1804/10, and that would include son Gabriel (c1809).
In 1830, Henry English was listed one page from his recently married son Gabriel English in Burke County. Gabriel was listed in Burke County next to Jefferson Hensley <../hensley/hensley-benjamin-burke.htm>, in what was soon to become McDowell County.

Gabriel English was listed on the 1840 census in Burke County, NC in the section that later became McDowell. He was just two houses from his father Henry English Sr.

In 1842, McDowell County was formed from part of Burke, including where the English family resided.
On 8 Sep 1849, Sophia was named in her father's Will as daughter "Sophia English".
Gabriel and Sophia were listed on the 1850 census in McDowell County. They were just a few houses from his parents and several siblings. Sophia's sister Mary Cuthbertson was a few pages away. Jane and William Swann were residing with them, as was John Bowman. I don't know who (or if) they were related to the English or Carpenter families. There were other members of the Swann family residing with other English families, so that must be where the connection is.

Gabriel and Sophia were still in McDowell for the 1860 census. Their Post Office was listed as North Cove. Emily Franklin, age 7 was with the family in 1860. She could be a niece of Sophia, a child of her sister Nancy Franklin. John Williams, age 11 was there also, don't know how, or if, he is related. Also listed was Jane Swan, age 27, possibly same girl from 1850, though the age doesn't match.

Gabriel and Sophia were still in McDowell for the 1870 census in North Cove Township. Elizabeth Franklin, age 20, niece of Sophia was with them, a child of her sister Nancy Franklin. J. M. Carpenter age 14 was with them, probably a nephew. It could be Josiah M. Carpenter, son of Samuel Carpenter.

I don't have the 1880 census record yet.
Sophia Carpenter English died in 1889 in McDowell County, and Gabriel English died in 1890. I don't know where they were buried.
Gabriel and Sophia had no children.
