** My grandparents spent a summer as migrant farmers because my grandfather
developed black lung from the mines and had to move to a better climate for a
while. The baby was just born, and the doctor said he would take care of it for
the summer while they were gone because he was too young to travel. When they
returned, he had given the baby up for adoption and refused to tell them where
he was. Thus, we have a missing uncle somewhere who probably doesn't know he is
missing.
Have fun. I just love attaching to big databases. It's so fun from a historical
standpoint. I have really learned to love history.

According to Art Carpenter, 1/95, the records on 'Charlies' early life are conflicting with family remembrances, the census and his obtuary.  Art states that when he, Art, was small his grand parents told him that Charlie was kicked out by the family he was living with when he was 12 years old.  He went to work on the Erie Canal as a horse and mule driver.  It was reported by Rosemary Batchlor that Charlie was married at Sand Lake, NY in either 1821 or 22.  We have records that list the children as being born in Montgomery Co. near Sand Lake.  Both this and the below record could be correct, in that Lysander may be near the area through which the Erie Canal was built, who knows?

There is a Christopher Carpenter noted on the 1850 census as follows:
Ref:  M432=1850 census; roll #570; town of Lysander; county of Onondaga; State of NY; stamped page #500; family #91, dwelling #591, line #42.  He is shown as living with the Lyman Longley family, age 16, (making his birthday in 1834). It is unknown if this is the Christopher Carpenter of our family.
There is a Mary Carpenter listed, (same reference, line 19) living with the Joel S. Craw family, and there is a Jacaquete ? A. Carpenter living with the Elias Coy family.  One can only guess, but it appears that these three
Carpenter children lost their parents and were parcled out to friends.  The birth date for Christopher C. matches the birth date for Charlie Carpenter, as shown in the 1870 census = M593; roll 1061, page 48, line 11, dwelling 424, family 422, and married to Clarissia, having Emma and Charles Egbert Carpenter.
Apparently he did not like Christopher as his first name, so used his middle name, Charles, this followed thru into the 1870 census and his death certificate. An additional reference for the 1870 census from Aurther Carpenter shows the reference on page 47, listing Charles and Clarissa, having 5 children, Emma 9; Charles E. 7; William 5; Henry 3; John 2, & Irving 5/12.

Census of 1880                               4th Ward, city of Hillsdale in
Hillsdale Co, MI, the 10th day of June.  Lists Charles Carpenter 46 as a
farmer, Clarissa 40, Emma 19 (at home), Charles 17, (farm labor), William 15
(at school), Henry 13, Irving 10, George 7, Minnie 5, Carrie 4, Fanny 3, Grant
1.

Census of 1884 from Emmet Co, MI lists: Charles 47 (teanster), Clarissa 45
(wife), Charles 21 (teamster), william 19 (laborer), Henry 16 (laborer), Irving
12 (at home), George 9, Minnie 7, Carrie 6, Fannie 5, Grant 4, Lilly 20
(Daughter-in-law), Grace 1 (grand daughter).

Charles Carpenter, Livery Stable, is listed in the Wayne Directory in 1899,
but not in 1897.  This directory, part of the MI Gazetteer, appeared
every two years.  This Charles Carpenter may have started his livery in 1898,
or even late in 1897, (from Mrs. Hanchett at the Wayne Historical Museum.)
Wayne Directories:  1895 list Wm. Bailey & Charles Carpenter, proprs.
Wayne Co. Review,  Charles Carpenter - Livery is listed for years 1895, 1897,
1899, 1901, 1903,1905,1907, and 1909.

Census of 1900, MI, Wayne Co., Nankin twp, village of Wayne, ED#194, sheet #8, shows a Chas Carpenter, born in Aug of 1835, 64 yrs of age, born in NY, father unknown, mother born in VA, working as a liveryman.  He is married to Ella born Aug 1853, age 46, born in MI, parents born in NJ.

The Wayne Echo, April 27th, 1900, lists Charles Carpenter:  As in most other
things Wayne is well supplied with modes of conveyance, and Charles Carpenter is ready and willing to accomodate any one who desires to be conveyed by the horse and buggy method with good rigs and at reasonable prices.  He is located on Fourth Street in the east end of the Village.

Chas. Carpenter listed 1895-1909 and Ben Simons listed 1911 in the MI Gazetteer.  In 1900 Charles Carpenter had "good rigs at reasonable prices."  He had 5 or 6 horses then and Bill Chambers said he didn't wait up for his customers.  Went to bed and let them put the horses in.  They unhitched the horse, (if they were out late), left harness in buggy and let horse find its own stall.  He charged $1.50. ( From Mildred Hanchett,  Sept. 30, 1968).

Death certificate indicates his age at death as 74 yrs, 7 mos, 15 days,
and as he died on 28th of April 1910, figuring this out gives his birth date
(according to the death certificate) as 13 Oct 1835.  We have his birth date
listed as 13 Aug 1835.  The certificate states that Charles was a livery-man,
and died of "Gangrene of foot", the doctor states that he attended to him from
April 20th to his time of death on April 28th for the injury.  He is listed as
married, but no wife is listed (she was Clarissa Whitmore, and it notes
that his father and mother as well as his place of birth is unknown.  This
would be consistent with his being an orphan at the age of 16. Clarissa had
died some years earlier, in 1892, after going to her daughters home, Emma,
to help her as that family had become infected with Typhoid.
It is related by Florence Pearl Proctor that he remarried after Clarissa died;
Carrie Belle, who was the mother of George Belle, who married his step-sister
Carrie Elizabeth Carpenter.

The following information has been received from Arthur Carpenter 4/1/94 and is taken from his information based on the obituary from the Wayne Review, Friday May 6th 1910.
"Charles Carpenter was born August 13, 1835 in Marcellus, Onoadaga Co. NY and passed from this earth April 28th, 1910, at his home in Wayne, MI at the age of 74 years, 8 months, and 15 days.  He was married to Clarissa Whitmore in Marcellus NY December 6th 1859.  She departed this earth on November 15th, 1892.  Eleven children were born to this union, 10 of whom are still living.
Emma F. Place of Canton, MI.; Charley E. and Wm. L. of IA; Minnie D. Truesdell and Fannie D. Place of Petoskey, MI.; George of Dearborn, MI; Henry J., Irving, Carrie E. Bell and Grant L. of Wayne MI; the child John preceded him in death at the age of 9 years.  All the children were born in NY except Grant, who was born in Hillsdale MI.  All were here to attend the funeral except Wm. L.

Charles married Ella Bell on Dec. 4th, 1894, following the death of his wife Clarissa in 1892, she still survives him.

Charles was the seventh boy of a family of 12 children.  Two brothers and one sister are still living; Abe Carpenter & Mrs. Jennie Widger, both of NY; and Phillip Carpenter of OK.  He was left to drift amongst strangers at the age of 12 years, his father being killed by being run over by a wagon.
(ref: census of 1850, living with the Lyman Longley family at age 16)  He was one of a long-lived family, his mother being 87 years old at the time of her death, and brothers and sisters who have passed before had reached their three score years and ten.

During the time of the Civil War he bought horses for the army, he was always a great lover of horses; at various times he owned very valuable animals.  He also furnished straw to the largest paper mills in NY.  He was interested in different occupations at various places.  He was very devoted to his family and always looked forward to their welfare.  In time of need he was always ready to lend a helping hand.  He was very outspoken, was of a jovial
disposition, and had a very tender heart.

Charles funeral was held at the First United Methodist Church Sunday afternoon.  Rev. Frank Bradley assisted by Rev. Wickham conducted the services. Will Curtis sang several solos.  Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery,1 May 1910.

Records from the First United Methodist Church in Wayne, taken on Heritage Sunday April 26th, 1992, listing the first 160 years, lists a Franklin Bradley as minister from 1909 to 1913, however there is no listing for a Rev. Wickham.

Charles' son, Henry, once stated that they lived in Hillsdale for 1 1/2 years, at Ionia 1 1/2 years and in Petoskey for 4 years.

Property owned in Wayne MI:  Steers addition, lots 55, 56, & south half of 54; and O'Conner addition lots 15 & 20, from 1891,  William L. & Henry Pd. personel tax.  Charles also owned 3 pieces of land in Alcona County, MI.

John,  I found your home page on Family Tree Maker site.  It's great!   You have really done a wonderfull job for the Carpenter family of researchers. I have been working with a Ted Atkinson of Williamstown, MA, who is
descended thru the  Carpenter line, Abiah, to Oliver, to Jeremiah and on down.  I had put my line together using Jeremiahs son Christopher, and then down from him.  He has good records on Jeremiah, and knows that Christopher of Jeremiah died at an early age.  So I am now of the opinion that my genealogy line goes as follows from  Wm of Rehoboth, to  Abiah,  to Oliver to his son Christopher b: 1696 who married Mercy Taylor, then to their son  Christopher, b: 1745 who married Ann ?, their son Christopher, b: 1796 who  married Henrietta M. Greenman, their son Christopher (called Charlie by our family), b:1853, who married Clarissa Whitmore.
I am following up on this line to obtain better documentation and will send it all to you when complete.  Best wishes and keep up the good effort.
John Proctor.

Fay (Carpenter) & Jerry Ford provided this summary in April of 2005:
Great grandparents: a son Christopher D. "Charlie" Carpenter was b. 13 Aug 1835 in Marcellus, Onondaga Co., NY.  He m. Clarissa "Clara" Whitmore on 6 Dec 1859 in MI.  Charlie d. 28 Apr 1910 in Wayne, Wayne Co., MI.  Clara b. 1 Jun 1938 also in Marcellus, NY and d. from typhoid while helping infected family members 15 Nov 1892, Wayne, MI.  She was the d/o Elias Whitmore and Adelia Adeline Brower and ninth generation from four Mayflower passengers:  John Alden, George Soule, Edward Doty and William Mullins.  She (therefore, Bob) descend from them and Philip Delano, a Huguenot immigrant, related to presidents Roosevelt.  Huguenot was the name given protestants persecuted and killed by decree of a French king if they didn't convert to Catholicism.  Many fled to other countries.  Eight former American presidents can be traced as Huguenot descendants.  Both Charlie and Clara were buried in the Glenwood Cemetery in Wayne, MI.  They had eleven children: Emma Florence, Charles Egbert, William L., Henry Joel, John (died age nine), Irving, George, Minnie Della, Carrie Elizabeth, Fannie Delia, and Grant Lewis.
