DEATH:
13 April per the CM.  15 April per the AF.  Both in 1754, yet she
married in 1755? Death year of 1756 more plausible.
Her only son was born 6 April 1756 and she likely died about a week later.

Oops! In looking more carefully at the email thread, I see that you did receive this.
You might be interested to know, however, that Charles Sibre’s assertion that the 9 May 1764 [recte 1765] marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter and Elizabeth Carpenter occurred in Rehoboth is incorrect. The marriage was recorded at Cumberland, Rhode Island, which was the bride’s home and almost certainly the location of their marriage (see Vital record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850 : a family register for the people, Vol. 3 - Viewer (Arnold, 22 vols., 3[Providence County]:5[Cumberland]:20 [image 240], online at FamilySearch.org).

Dear Gene,
In this long string of forwarded emails and responses is a digital copy of a document from 1764 Rehoboth. It is a marriage and child birth listing, most likely taken from a family bible.
Ownership belongs to Charles Edwin Sibre (csibre@yahoo.com) and is in regards to the marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter (1743-1826) and Elizabeth and their childrens' births.
I find this resource only in Amos Bugby Carpenter's memorial.  Nonetheless, I thought you might like to see it.
Warm regards and a Happy Thanksgiving,
Lende

Subject: Carpenter Family Priceless Document
John,
I found your e-mail address on the Carpenter Family DNA website. I am Charles E Sibre, age 68, living in Annandale, VA. Genealogy is a hobby. My wife, Ellen, was adopted as a baby. Her adopting mother, Edith Burnham Russell, is a descendant of Elizabeth Carpenter (b.4/18/1786 Leyden, Franklin, MA - d. 09/10/1849 Craftsbury, Orleans, VT). Elizabeth was Edith's great, great grandmother. Elizabeth Carpenter is the daughter of Nathaniel Carpenter (1/13/1743 Rehoboth, Bristol, MA - dead 1786 or 1826) and Elizabeth Carpenter (maiden name) (1/13/1743 Rehoboth - died unknown Cumberland, RI).
Ellen has inherited a family scrapbook, assembled by her grandfather, that has an original, handwritten, linen-paper, sheet of the Nathaniel and Elizabeth Carpenter family - starting with their marriage 1765 through the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth in 1786.
I am searching for a Carpenter family association or group to whom I can send an image and transcription of this valuable document, but have not found one as I have for many of Edith's other old New England ancestors. Do you know of one? Of multiple ones who would be interested?
Charles

In my wife's family records is an ORIGINAL handwritten marriage and child birth record, that is 256 years old, that is on waxed linen paper starting at the marriage of Nathaniel Carpenter (b. 1/13/1743 in Rehoboth, son of David Carpenter and Johanna Walker) and Elizabeth Carpenter (b. 12/20/1746 Rehoboth, dau of Jotham Carpenter Jr and Mehitable Thompson). It records from their marriage on 5/9/1764 in Rehoboth to the birth of their 10th child Elizabeth Carpenter b. /18/1786, plus some later family additions showing the descent line down to Amanda Root Graves and Albert Mattoon Graves. The ORIGINAL is in a family scrapbook assembled by Kenneth H Graves Russell, the father of my wife's mother. This seems to us to be a very valuable document and we will be happy to share an image of it, and a transcription of its contents (though I can't find that right now). This messaging system does not allow attachments. is there a better organization to get this information to? If interested, contact me at csibre@yahoo.com

1446. Samuel Carpenter

Number 807 of the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 141.
Family on page 260 (# 287).
Samuel married twice.  Her name is not known.  Her name may be Elizabeth.
His second marriage was to Deborah Greenman on Jan 21, 1754 or Nov. 15, 1753.
Probably the later the intention date.

The birth dates for his family are obviously incorrect.
Samuel, the son is listed as born on 4 Apr. 1733, which is the father's BD!
Joseph, the son has his uncle Joseph's BD of 22 June 1736.
Elizabeth, the daughter has her aunt Elizabeth's BD of 10 May 1741.
Solomon, the son, probably of the second marriage, has a BD of 21 Apr 1754.

He received property for his service (for military or state service of some kind?) near Sweden in Orleans (now Monroe), NY.  He may have been buried there. Documentation not provided and some inconsistencies found.

Hello John. Yes it took me a bit to figure out the Carpenter memorial was a combination of good clues and bad. All and all it has been a good help. I am working to verify the info on the first and second generations below. I would be glad to give you access to my tree on Ancestry.com. I have collected a good deal of descent info from Edward Hazard Carpenter on to present day. Here is a synopsis of how I think this goes. Eddie Carpenter ************************************* First Generation Daniel Carpenter, CM #814, page 141, (b. 1744 m. 1762 d. 1823) Buried at Reynold's cemetery in Norway, NY. + Susannah Congdon (b. abt 1747 d. Mar 1818) Buried at Reynold's cemetery in Norway, NY. These folks appear to have moved to Norway, Herkimer, New York in about 1802. This portion of New York (Herkimer county) was referred to as the "Royal Grant". The town of Ohio was split from Norway in the early 1800's. Initially it was called "New Brunswick" or "West Brunswick". This is likely the cause of the remark in the Carpenter Memorial. I found a reference to the arrival of Daniel Carpenter and his sons Samuel and Azel (Asahel) in a history of Herkimer county. Have not figured out where how or if Ruth Cornell fits in. 1. Abigail: per CM Married John Champlin and died in CT in 1800. 2. Samuel: Many records of his presence at Norway, NY. Buried at Reynold's cemetery in Norway. Married a Catherine, also buried at Norway. 3. Edward: very probable in Norway, still not solid on this. See US census 1810, 1820, 1830, 1850 4. Nabby: Likely a repeat of Abigail above as Nabby is a familiar for Abigail. 5. Nathaniel: Possibly an error and son of another Daniel Carpenter from North Kingston. Still investigating this. 6. Richard: per CM married Cynthia Walker went to Thompson, CT. Found in US census 1850, 1860 7. Susan: familiar for Susannah. married William Champlin in home of Daniel Carpenter in May 1779 at Richmond, RI (see Revolution pension file for William Champlin). Buried in Eaton Rapids, MI (where her grandson had relocated.) 8. Peggy: familiar for Margaret. married Park Enos in 29 Mar 1790 in Richmond, CT. Relocated to Norway and Fairfield, Herkimer, NY in 1800. Died there in abt 1855. 9. Polly: Nothing yet. 10. George: Nothing yet. Old letter from another cousin hints he may be the son of a Benjamin Carpenter instead. 11. Asahel: often Azel. Many records of his presence at Norway. Married a Deborah (buried at Reynold's cemetery in Norway.) Later married a Margaret Mumford. This resulted in some court proceedings between his son Jackson and second wife over land in NY state. Relocated from Norway to Milford, Otswego, NY and not buried at Reynold's. 12. Arnold: possibly a twin with Asahel. Birth years run the same in census data. 1820, 1830 1840 in Norway. 1850 in Boonville, NY. 13. Daniel: the 1778 birthdate is an error. Based upon marriage to Mary Champlin on 19 Jun 1782 a date of about 1763 is more likely. Also likely the eldest son of Daniel. Marriage record refers to him as Daniel Carpenter 3rd. This is consistent with other records referring to his father as "Junior". There is a record referred to in a letter from a cousin that Daniel (#814 above) sold land in 1802 which he had earlier purchased from this son Daniel prior to departure to Norway, NY. This is the line I believe I descend from. 14. Benjamin: Nothing yet. In the same letter as in George above this cousin hints he may also be the son of a Benjamin Carpenter instead. 15. William: Nothing yet. ************************************* Second Generation Below regards Daniel Carpenter (#13 in list above) Daniel Carpenter, #1966, page 443, (b. abt 1763 m. 1782 d. abt 1835) + Mary Champlin (b. abt 1747 d. Mar 1818) This is the sister of William Champlin who married Susan Carpenter (#7 in the list above) These folks appear to have stayed in Richmond, RI. As mentioned above there are records for a land sale between Daniel III and his father Daniel II prior to Daniel II departure for Herkimer. A number of children may have relocated to Norway with or following their grandparents, Daniel and Susannah. 1. Benjamin: You already have the info on him in the material you sent. 2. George: Nothing yet. 3. William: Married Hannah Carpenter per CM. Found to remain in Richmond, RI through 1870 Census. 4. Polly: Nothing yet. 5. Susan: familiar for Susannah. Married to Elijah Chaplin per CM. Correct is Champlin. 1850, 1860, 1870 census records in South Kingston, RI 6. Peggy: familiar for Margaret. Married Daniel C. Henderson. found in 1850, 1860 census records at Norway, Herkimer, NY. Henderson was prominent in Herkimer county per historical sketches. 7. Renewed: Married Silas Niles Littlefield. Died without children? 8. Abby: familiar for Abigail. Also married Silas Niles Littlefield. Census finds her at New Shoreham, RI in 1850, 1860 and 1870. Buried on Block Island, RI. 9. Daniel: Married Lucy Babcock. Eldest son Daniel was born in RI in 1825. Daughter Lucy Ann born in Herkimer, NY in 1839. Son Edward Hazard Carpenter will marry Almira Stevens mentioned below. This is the line I descend from. Found in Waukesha, WI in 1850 and 1860. Relocates to IN and later dies in Union Mills, Indiana in Feb 1876. 10. Edward: Found in Herkimer in 1830, 1840, 1850. Has a niece (Almira Stevens) living with him in 1850 that provides ties to later records in WI. Found in Waukesha, WI in 1860 and Palmyra, WI in 1870. 11. Halsey: Halsey Champlin Carpenter. You already have a good deal of info on him. He is found in the 1840 and 1850 census in Salisbury, Herkimer, NY. Later in Rockbridge, WI in 1860, 1870 and 1880. A historical sketch remarks he initially settled in Eastern WI prior to Rockbridge. This is likely Waukesha as well. 12. Catherine: Married Stephen Raynor. Can be found in 1830 and 1850 census in Salisbury, NY 1860 and Fairfield, NY 1870, and the 1880 and 1900 census in Waukesha, WI. 13. Martha: Married Emery Wilcox. Can be found in 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in Newport, Herkimer, NY. 14. Harriet: is unmarried in Fairfield, NY 1850 and Newport, NY in 1860. is working as a domestic servant. ************************************* Third Generation This info is based upon a handwritten letter from Daniel Carpenter to my great-great Grandmother Almira Stevens regarding his children, birthdates and locations. MILITARY HISTORY:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1st_Rhode_Island_Regiment
In 1777, the Continental Army was reorganized once again, and on 1 January 1777 the 9th Continental Regiment was re-designated as the 1st Rhode Island Regiment. Varnum no longer commanded the regiment, having been made a brigadier general; his eventual successor was Colonel Christopher Greene, a distant cousin of General Nathanael Greene. Under Colonel Greene the regiment successfully defended Fort Mercer at the Battle of Red Bank on 22 October 1777 against an assault by 2,000 Hessians.  ...
On 1 January 1781, the regiment was consolidated with the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment and re-designated as the Rhode Island Regiment. It took part in the siege of Yorktown.
On 15 June 1783, the veteran "during the war" enlisted men of the Rhode Island Regiment were discharged at Saratoga, New York. The remaining soldiers of the Regiment who were enlisted for "three years" were organized into a small Battalion of two companies known as the "Rhode Island Battalion". This unit was disbanded on 25 December 1783 at Saratoga, New York.

COMMENT:
So, if James was in both 1st Reg & 2nd Reg consolidated then he served  before 1 Jan 1781 and after that date to be listed in both rosters. But how much before 1871 did he serve?  Sometime between 1 Jan 1777 and 1 Jan 1781 would be the enlistment date.  Was he the James at Valley Forge on roster May & June 1778?
NOTE: If james married in 1778, did he enlist then or return?  His first son is born in 1779. This fits an April marriage and Jan 1779 baby.  His second child was born 29 Jul 1781 this means he was with his wife Oct-Nov 1780. His third child was born 7 Jun 1785 meaning he was with wife say Aug-Oct 1784 well after the RI units discharge dates. Yes, there is room for a 1783 child, but none listed.

Subject: Carpenter genealogy
Hi - I appreciate your reply! Since I posted that message, I discovered the lineage of Daniel, which (if I have it correct) is: Daniel Carpenter/Mary Grady>Stephen Carpenter/Susannah Champlin>Daniel Carpenter/Renewed Smith>Solomon Carpenter/Elizabeth Tefft>Abiah Carpenter/Mary Redway (Readway, Readaway)>William Carpenter/Abigail Briant>William Carpenter/Alice Unknown. Could you verify that I have this correct? I didn't know the info from the Carpenter Memorial, so will add this to my files.  My stumbling block is now the Grady lineage. I can find no info on Mary Grady's father, and very little on her mother, Harty. On one census report, there is a Harty "Rhodes" living with Daniel and Mary, of the correct age for Mary's mother, Harty, but I don't know if Harty married again somebody named Rhodes, or if this is her maiden name? At one point she was also married to Stephen Carpenter, Daniel Carpenter's father (!!) so this is kind of convoluted to say the least. I don't suppose you would know anything about this branch of the family?  Again, thanks so much for your reply. If there is anything that I might be able to help you with, please feel free to ask. I am a real amateur at this, but I have discovered quite a bit of information over the last couple of years.  DC
