104 years oldCOAL RUN - Arthur McKitrick, 104, of Tick Hill Road, Coal Run, died Monday (March 21, 2011) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 25, 1906, at Newport, Ohio, son of Wesley Sheridan and Blanche Carpenter McKitrick. He was a farmer from 1923 to 1942, when he enlisted in Company A, 332 Engineer Regiment in the U.S. Army. He served through World War II until 1945 in England, Scotland, Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland and Luxembourg. After the service he worked at the River Gas Co. in Marietta retiring in 1969. He was a member of the Coal Run Church of Christ.
On Nov. 5, 1974, he was married to Verna Carpenter McKitrick and they made their home in Coal Run for many years. Verna died March 12, 2008. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Clifford, Elbert and Herbert McKitrick; three sisters, Grace Wagner, Alice Cozzens and Elsie Augenstein.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly with Evangelist Rich Lemal officiating. Burial will be in Waterford Cemetery with military services at the grave. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Hiram A. Carpenter, a man of vision and ability to execute his progressive dreams, passed away Wednesday morning, April 29, 1970, at the family residence.
A native Pleasants countian, he was the eldest of 14 children born to Alexander and Rhoda Allendar Carpenter and would have been 90 years old on his birthday, Dec. 3, 1970.
A well-known riverman, he began his career ferrying mail between Raven Rock and Leith, Oh., when he was 13 years old. He has been successful in many enterprises including sand and gravel business, farming 13 Ohio River islands which he owned at one time, apple raising, road construction, transportation and his greatest undertaking, building the Short Route Bridge in 1928.
The bridge was re-named the " Hi Carpenter Bridge " in his honor Sept. 16, 1967.
A Charter member of the St. Marys Kiwanis Club, he has never missed a mid-week meeting since its inception in 1924. Lodge affiliations included Mason and Maccabees (53 years), Eastern Star, IOOF, Rebekah and Modern Woodman.
Owner of the H. A. Carpenter Sand and Gravel Co., he held positions as president of the Clarksburg, Columbus Short Route Bridge Co., vice-presidency of General Construction Co., Pittsburgh, and the Gwinn Falls Quarry Co. of Baltimore, Md. He sponsored the first concrete road in Pleasants County and the state (1913) operated ferry boat across the Ohio, between St. Marys and Newport, and served on the Pleasants County Park Board.
Married to Mary A. Ambler in 1912 who preceded him in death in 1956, he is survived by three sons: Hiram A. Carpenter Jr. of Coraopolis, Pa., J. Franklin Carpenter and Walter S. Carpenter, city; three daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Runnels of Newark, Del., Mrs. Helen Hewitt of Georgetown, Del., and Mrs Barbara Topper, Salem, Va.; 12 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs Nelle Flower and Mrs. Bernice Richardson, Marietta, Oh., Mrs. Mabel Wagner, Parkersburg and Mrs. Letha Skaggs, city; and one brother, William Glen (Jake) Carpenter, city; and many nephews and nieces.Family Members

John Franklin "Beany" Carpenter, 93, of St. Marys died April 3, 2008, at the Arbors of Marietta.He was born June 10, 1914, in St. Marys, a son of the late Hiram A. Sr. and Mary Ambler Carpenter. He was a member of the St. Marys United Methodist Church, a 1932 graduate of St. Marys High School, a 1937 graduate of West Virginia University, where he received his bachelor's degree in economics. While at WVU, he played football on the junior varsity football team and was the starting centerfielder on the baseball team coached by Ira E. "Rat" Rogers.
In the later 1930s, he worked on the Monongahela River with Hillman Transportation. He later traveled to California to work in a creamery and also worked on a steam driven tanker, receiving his tanker's license for Sinclair Oil. He returned to St. Marys and worked for the former Quaker State Refinery for 29 years, where he retired. He was a member of St. Marys Lodge 41 A. F. & A. M. and Elks Lodge 1578 in Eustis, Fla. He was an avid ballroom dancer.
He is survived by one brother, Walter S. Carpenter of St. Marys; two sisters, Rebecca C. Runnels of Newark, Del., and Helen C. Hewitt of Georgetown, Del.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jerry Carpenter; one brother, Hiram Carpenter Jr.; and one sister, Barbara C. Topper.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, with Pastor Pam Shuman officiating. Interment will be in the St. Marys IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

King and spouse, Jeff King of Livingston, Mont.; great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Griffin, and Duncan King. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Frank S. "Pete" Hewitt, siblings, Hiram A. Carpenter Jr., J. Franklin Carpenter, Walter S. Carpenter, Rebecca C. Runnels, and her identical twin, Barbara Ann Carpenter Topper.
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at Collins McKee Stone Funeral Home, Bassett, Va., from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. A viewing will also be held in St. Marys, W.Va., on Friday, February 19, 2021, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Ingraham Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021, with final viewing from 9 until 11 a.m., Memorial service at 11 a.m., and interment immediately following at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, St. Marys, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory for her nephew, Rev. T.A. Topper II, still serving as missionary and Bible College Administrator in West Africa for over 32 years Zion Fellowship International, P.O. Box 70, Waverly, NY, 14892. Memorial donations may also be made to Derek Prince Ministries, P.O. Box 19501, Charlotte, NC, 28219. Collins Funeral Home at Bassett, Virginia is respectfully serving the Hewitt Family.
