Dear John,
You will believe me when I say I am just wallowing in fun with this old Bible. What a treaure trove! I am transcribing the loose stuff first and will eventually send all of it, but here are the obits:Prominent Citizen Gone
Dr. J. H. Carpenter Expires After a Short Illness
At one o'clock this morning the death messenger entered the home of Dr. J. H. Carpenter of the first ward and summoned him into the life beyond the reach of human experience. He was laid low last Friday by a stroke of apoplexy, but so far recovered there from as to be able to go to his drugstore yesterday. But this morning at one o'clock he suffered a second attack and expired before medical assistance could arrive. The funeral will occur Sunday at two o'clock from the Congregational church in charge of the Odd Fellows of which he was a member.
Joseph Hope Carpenter, of Dutch descent, was born at Rome, Lenawee county, October 14th, 1841, spending his early life in the vicinity of Adrian. In 1863 he enlisted in the 10th Michigan Infantry and served his country during the great struggle for the preservation of the Union. The war ended he returned to the ordinary pursuits of life. Taking up the study of medicine, he took a course of lectures at Cleveland, Ohio, and subsequently began to practice medicine and continued in that profession up to his final sickness. Late in the seventies he moved to Mt. Pleasant and in 1880 located in Clare.
Dr. Carpenter is well known in Clare ad surrounding county. Having a taste for politics he had not a little following in the first ward and was generally more or less prominent in caucuses, conventions and elections. He served well in various offices to which he was elected, including village president, two terms county coroner, four times elected justice of the peace, which office he held at the time of his death, and was for several years member of the board of education.
Dr. Carpenter twice married, in1862 to Almaranta Carpenter to which union were born five children of whom Herbert J. of Fremont, Ohio, and Alva Dewitt of Grand Rapids, still survive, and in 1882 to Ester C. Haskell who survives him. Four children were born to the latter union and of these Ida May and Cora Elise survive. Two brothers survive the doctor, Benjamin at Adrian and Daniel in Minnesota.
The Sentinel extends to the sorrowing wife and two daughters its sincerest sympathy in the hour of their bereavement.

Dr. Carpenter Dead!
Well Known Physician and Justice, Expired From Heart Failure Yesterday Morning
On Friday evening last, Dr. Joseph H. Carpenter was stricken with heart failure, and for several hours his condition was regarded as serious. Within a day or two, however, he rallied and was able to be about his store as usual. On Wednesday evening he was about his business until a late hour, and though yet weak he expressed himself as feeling nearly as well as ever. At twelve o'clock he awakened his wife by an unusual movement, and she discovered that his breathing was extremely difficult and that he was unconscious. Physicians and neighbors were immediately summoned but before any had arrived the doctor passed away.
The funeral will be held from the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Woodlock, and under the auspices of Clare lodge I. O. O. F., and the interment will be made in Cherry Grove.
Joseph Hope Carpenter was born in Rome, Lenawee county, Michigan, October 14, 1841, being 62 years, two months and thirteen days of age at the time of his death. He was married to Almaranta Carpenter, Aug. 4, 1863, and to which union came five children, two boys and three girls, the two boys, Alva and Herbert, surviving. Mrs. Carpenter died Feb. 22, 1880, and during that year the doctor located in Clare. On May 15, 1882 he was married to Esther C. Haskell, and to them were born four children, the survivors being Misses Ada and Cora.
Probably no citizen of this city was more generally known than was the deceased, and he enjoyed the esteem of a large following. He was actively engaged in the practice of medicine during the time, and for several years conducted a drug store. In public life he was well known and at different times occupied many of the positions of honor and trust at the disposal of the voters, including that of mayor and alderman, justice of the peace, coroner and member of the board of education. At the time of his death he filled the positions county coroner, justice of the peace and member of the soldiers and sailors' relief commission. He was a veteran of the civil war, and gave much time to the soliciting pensions for his comrades and at which practice he was highly successful.
The doctor was a good citizen, devoted husband and father, and his death will be deeply mourned by a wide circle of acquaintance. The Courier extends to the bereaved family its most sincere sympathy.

D. D. Carpenter Dies At Michigan Home
Deceased Had Been Resident Of Our Community For Many Years
Daniel Dewitt Carpenter, aged 87 years, died Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 at his home at 726 Company St., Adrian, Michigan. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Wm. M. Jennings of St. Marys, Ohio,; and two grandchildren, Mrs. G. W. Nicholas of Versailles, Ohio, and Wm. M. Jennings, Jr. a medical student at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.
Mr. Carpenter was born October 29, 1845, in Rome, Michigan, the youngest of three sons of Henry Carpenter, Jr. and Azuba Ostrander. He was married July 4, 1870 to Miss Josephine R. Dane. Until an advanced age he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, being Master three times; also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen.
For many years, D. D. Carpenter lived in Jamesville, being engaged as a millwright for a line of large flouring mills, but had been retired from active work some ten or twelve years ago. The past seven years he has resided at the above address in Adrian, Michigan.
The death of Mr. Carpenter removes from this community a native of Lenewee Co. and one highly respected and indeed loved by all who knew him. He was a man who was just and upright in his daily life, believing thoroughly in the golden rule and practiced its principles with discretion and honestly in his dealings with mankind.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the residence. The Rev. R. S. Chalmers officiated. Burial took place at Onsted, Michigan.
