Bio: Mrs. Roanna Murphy Dies in 82nd year
Mrs. Roanna Murphy, widow of Albert Murphy
and one of the best known residents In Winfield
district died Sunday after a long illness. She was
aged 81 years. Her husband died 11 years ago.
The following children survive. Mrs. Emma Keisley, at home, Mrs. Lavina Huffman, of
Rosstown, Mrs. Marrie Curry of Montana, Gideon
Murphy of Prickett’s Creek and Sheridan Murphy
of Rosstown. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:30 o’clock from the
Fairview M. E. Church on Bunner’s Ridge and
Interment will be made in the Bunner cemetery
by Undertakers Musgrave and Sons.

Attached is a photo of the medal issued by the state of WV for David (128096); my father obtained the medal in the 1960s when the state of WV was trying to clean out their vaults where medals had been sitting for almost 100 years.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES-MILITARY-DEATH: On April 29, 2002 descendant Gary Baker, garyb@strategic.com, sent a Carpenter Family History written in 1984 by an unknown author, possibly Carl Carpenter: "On April 9, 1865 in Grafton, West Virginia, David Carpenter was drafted into Company E of the Seventh Regiment of the West Virginia Infantry volunteers. David was 29 years old, had fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes and was a stout man for his 130 pound frame. A month later the company was repositioned to Washington, D. C. In June following the surrender of the South by General Robert E. Lee, the company participated in a victory march through Virginia which started in Burkeville Junction and passed through Richmond en route to Munson Hill. The march was a long, hard, grueling activity that was injurious to the health of many men. David Carpenter was completely disabled upon arriving at Munson Hill. David was hospitalized for a severe case of varicose veins in his right leg and chronic dysentery. Following brief medical care, David was discharged on July 1, 1865 from the Army. The ailments incurred during the march handicapped David Carpenter throughout the rest of his life. The eight dollar per month pension was little compensation for the ailments which prevented David from living a productive life. On September 28, 1898 David died of the non-combat injuries suffered during his eighty-two days of duty in the Army. At the time of his death, David was survived by his second wife Martha J. (Keener) and their children, Pathina, David, George, John, Sarah, Emma, Louis, James and Elemore. David's first wife, Pathenia (Phillips), died in 1864 and three of their four children were alive at the time of David's death. They were Jacob, Amos and Rebecca. One son, Albert,
was killed one year earlier in a train accident."
MILITARY: David served in the Civil War in the Union Army, Company E. Information from Robert Hershman via GEDCOM/e-mail, 17 Apr 1998. Patty Carpenter Helms wrote via e-mail on June 3, 1998 that "David Carpenter" was the only name listed on his dischage papers in 1865 from the Civil War. At that time he was 29 years old and reported he was born in Richland County, Ohio. (See above notes re: "David Ashman Carpenter."

He married (2) MARTHA JANE KEENER February 23, 1865 in Taylor Co. W.Va, daughter of THOMAS KEENER and SARAH KISNER. She was born January 25, 1846 in Taylor Co. W.Va, and died November 22, 1920 in Marion Co., W.Va.
Notes for DAVID CARPENTER: Civil War, enrolled on the 9th day of April 1865 to serve one year . Discharged July 1 1865 at Munsons Hill, Virginia for reason of wounds received June 22 1865. David was 29 years of age at this time, Height 5 feet and 7 inches tall, fair complection, blue eyes, and dark hair. Occupation when enrolled was farmer. Burial: Hayhurst Cem. Bunner Ridge, Marion Co. W.Va. Military service: Civil war vet. Company E 7 th, Regiment,infantry, W.Va. Volunteers. NOTE: Martha Jane is buried with him at Hayhurst Cemetery.

Mrs. M. J. Carpenter of Mt. Nebo, Dies. The West Virginian. Fairmont, WV. Tues., Nov. 23, 1920.
Mrs. Martha Jane Carpenter, widow of David Carpenter, and a well known resident of this community, died yesterday at her home at Mount Nebo after an illness with a complication of diseases. She was aged 74 years having been born January 25, 1846, in Taylor county. Her husband preceded her to the grave a number of years ago and she is survived by the following children: Mrs. Parthena Keener, of Montana; Mrs. Emma Vissit (should read Bizet), of Charleroi, Pa.; D. A., William and Kirk Carpenter, of Winfield, and Edward, of Charleroi. The funeral will take place from the Fariview Methodist Episcopal church on Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock with the Rev. Michael officiating. Burial will be made in the Hayhurst Cemetery by undertakers Carpenter & Ford.

Pioneer Citizen of County Dies. The West Virginian. Fairmont, WV. Sat., July 28, 1923.
Ashman Carpenter, 86 years old, pioneer resident of Marion County, died at an early hour this morning at his home on Mud Lick Run after an illness of a few days of diseases incident to old age. Mr. Carpenter was taken ill last Tuesday and continued to grow worse. He had been unusually robust for a man of his years and had been sick very little during his lifetime.
He was a son of Ashman and Emily Martin Carpenter and was born in Mansfield, Ohio, but spent practically his entire life in Marion County.
In 1862 he was married to Miss Margaret Sapp, to whom three children were born. Two of them, Frank of Morgantown and Elias Arnett of Huntington, are living. A daughter died in infancy.
In 1883 he married Mrs. Mary Coombs, who survives him.
He was a member of the Company F, 15th Infantry, and served two years and 10 months in the Civil War, being discharged in 1865. He was a member of the Fairview Methodist Episcopal Church and was the oldest surviving member of his family. He was a successful farmer and spent most of his life engaged in farming. Mr. Carpenter was a familiar figure at the annual reunion of the Carpenter family and last year was the guest of honor. He had expected to attend the reunion of the family, which will be held this year on August 12.
The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Fairview M. E. Church and burial will be made in the Bunner Cemetery by Carpenter & Ford. The Rev. C. B. Michael will conduct the funeral services.

Regarding Ashman’s first wife, Margaret Sapp Carpenter:
Some researchers indicate she was the daughter of John Hoffman and John’s wife, Rebecca Ann Bunner Hoffman. However, Margaret used her step-father’s surname, Joseph Sapp, in her marriage record below.
Marriage Record: Ashman Carpenter and Margaret Sapp in Marion Co. WV. Year 1861 page 19: Ashman age 23, Farmer, parents: Ashman and Emily Carpenter and Margaret, age 18, parents Joseph and Ann(?) Sapp. Married May 16, 1861, by Rev Jacob Swisher at M.E. church. All of Marion County.
The two lived in Preston County and then returned to Marion County:

Further, the references to family offspring recorded in the parent's John Hoffman and Joseph Sapp memorials indicate that Ashman's first wife's maiden name as Sapp name was an error in his obituary. This caused the name on this memorial to also be in error. This memorial is surely for Ashman's second wife, Mrs. Mary Coombs who survived him. Whether Coombs was her maiden name or first husband's name is not resolved.
Based on this I am suggesting (1) the name on this memorial be changed and (2) the two Ashman Carpenter (Jr) memorials be combined.

Ann McKy, mariahmcky@hotmail.com, wrote on 5 Oct 2001: "Hi Jan, I have looked under Mcnamorron in my Marion Cty Marriages which go through 1899 and I see no Clarissa Mcnamorron listed which tells me that she was not remarried at that time or she was overlooked by the author. I saw her listed as Clarissa Carpenter when she married Mundel and I would assume she would be listed as Clarissa McNamorron when and if she got married prior to 1900 census. If he were dead, she was only 55 years old in 1900 and it would be likely she would get married again. Regardless, she would not have any children so it will not be a problem. My opinion, for what its worth, is that it is highly unlikely that this is "our" Clarissa. NOTE: A Clarissa Vincent married James T. Hawkins on 11 June 1876 in Marion County, also.

NOTE:
The 17th Infantry Regiment was a Regiment organized in September, 1864; the unit was attached to Reserve Division, District of Harper’s Ferry, W. Va.-- later it was moved to Clarksburg, W. Va. which is a town that was a major town near Fairmont where the Maple Grove cemetery is located … the regiment was mustered out on 30 June 1865.
