Townsend served in the US Navy Reserve from  9 Jun 1953 to 5 Jun 1957
as a FPG3 (Pipefitter (Shipboard) Petty Officer 3rd Class).

Townsend was killed in an automobile accident in Yuma County near the La Paz County line enroute to Quartzsite on Highway 95 from Yuma.

Townsend was never married.
