John Wilbur Carpenter was born on 2 November 1866, in Green Township, Ashland County, Ohio. His father, William Carpenter, was 25 and his mother, Minerva Jones, was 21. He married Rhoda Ellen Workman on 22 December 1887, in Buckeye City, Knox County, Ohio. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. They lived in Green Township, Ashland County, Ohio. Rhoda died in 1899. In 1900, he lived in Shelby, Sharon Township, Richland County, Ohio. He was widowed with with 4 children living there. His mother-in-law Hannah Workman also lived with them. In 1910, he lived in Jefferson Township, Knox County, Ohio with his 4 children. He worked at farming. He married Adeline Anna (Snider) Shaw on 17 August 1918 in Holmes County, Ohio. By 1920, he was living in Richland Township, Holmes County, Ohio and worked at farming. He was divorced from Adeline and married Fanny (Pine) Near on 21 February 1924 in Lucas County, Ohio.
He was widowed and living alone in Brown Township, Knox County, Ohio in 1930 where he worked at farming. He lived in Brown Township, Knox County, Ohio for at least 10 years. He died on 23 July 1953, at his residence in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio at the age of 86, and was buried on 27 July 1953 in Greenlawn Union Cemetery, Perrysville, Ashland County, Ohio.Father: William "Bill" Carpenter
