Focus on Carpenter surname and places from the book. I ignored references to the carpenter occupation. OCR was used in many places to extract the data.

E-MAIL: Mon, 1 May 2000 From: Robin Carpenter
Hello Carpenters:
Here is another Carpenter burial I found on my recent visit to Orange County NY.
In Ridgebury, along Route 6, is the "Primitive Baptist Church of Brookfield," est. 1792, with a modest cemetery adjoining.  Brookfield was the old name for Ridgebury.  Strangely, this church seems to have NO parking area, and NO directly useful path-or-walkway access from the road.  Yet the church itself seems very well maintained, and the grass is neatly trimmed.
The cemetery, on the other hand, is a mess...with trash around and broken and fallen stones common.
In the cemetery of the Primitive Baptist Church is found "Abigail, the wife of Benjamin Carpenter, died June 14(?), 1836."  I don't know which Benjamin this Abigail is the wife of.
(Also in this cemetery is Mary the wife of Holloway Stephens d. 4/19/1812 aged 38.  I noted this Stephens burial only because Holloway Stephens was an abutting neighbor to my Carman Carpenter in Minisink.  There is no particular Carpenter meaning to it...but there it is in case someone out there has some interest or connection.)
Robin.

Hello All:
Ruttenber & Clark's "History of Orange County" NY refers (pp.680, 684) to a Col. William C. Carpenter owning a farm in Wawayanda, "...about a mile and a half south of Brookfield..." in the mid 1800s.  ... (partial)

MORE: 3 Apr 2001  Thanks, John and Ida for your responses.  I now recognize this line as among the antecedents of Raymond George Carpenter.
In case it's of peripheral interest for you, synopsis of the 1798 tax lists describes the house of John Knapp (30x26, 6 windows, in good condition, value $300) adjoining Joshua Davis...and says Col William C. Carpenter was later the owner of the Davis house.  The Davis property was "a stone and a wooden house in good condition, the stone size 30x35 feet, one floor, four windows, the wooden house size 24x18 feet, one window one floor valuation $367.50".
I realize I'm a bit more interested in this "locational" stuff than most others...but there it is.

**From Elizabeth (Carpenter) Eggers "Genealogy of the Carpenter-Quiner Families"....." He
(Joseph), his cousin Peter Ingalls and a friend took a long trip. They sailed down the Mississippi
River in a sail boat landing in Florida, where Joseph met and married his wife. He settled in a small
town in Florida where he went into business. He had a General Store, Drug Store and was the
town's Postmaster. He also served as the town's Mayor and Justice of the Peace for twelve years.
Mrs. Carpenter helped him in the business besides taking care of the home and children. He then
sold his business and moved back to the old home town, Stockholm, Wis. where the family lived for
four years. When he bought a small truck farm at Merriland, Wis. Mrs Carpenter died in 1912 after
which he sold the little farm and moved to Plainview, MN and retired. He died in 1923....."
