He studied three years at Princeton, NJ and one year at the theological seminary in IL. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Winniebago, WI in May 1860 and was admitted to the full work of the Gospel Ministry in the Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1862.
He preached 4 years at Haricon, WI. He preached 1 1/2 years at Bergen, OH.
He was the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Marengo, IL for 4 years.
He preached at Lanesboro, MN for about 10 years.

Bio:
Rev. Carpenter graduated from Carroll College in 1858, after which he spent two years at Princeton Theological Seminary. He then went to the then-newly organized McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, from which he graduated from in 1861. He took a post-graduate course at Princeton the following year. During the summer vacation in 1859 he organized Sunday Schools I Coos County, New Hampshire under the auspices of the American Sunday School Union.
Following the custom of student ministers, John was licensed to preach the Gospel by the Presbytery of Winnebago, at Portage, Wisconsin on May 10, 1860. He supplied several pulpits before his ordination in Horicon,Wisconsin in 1862, where he began his pastoral work. During the Civil War he served with the US Christian Commission in Lower Mississippi. He has served as pastor in Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, and Iowa. He received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (1891) and that of Doctor of Divinity (1894) from Omaha University in Omaha, Nebraska.
John married Miss Harriet Amanda “Hattie” Nicholson on November 22, 1862 in Horicon, Wisconsin. The officiant was Rev. John A. Savage, president of Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin. The couple moved to Lincoln, Nebraska on November 2, 1908. He went on to supply nearly every church in the Presbytery of Nebraska City and quite a few beyond.
