Bio: Mrs. J. M. Simonds died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Palmer, in Malone, Saturday, April 30th. Lucy Elvira Carpenter was born in Jay, N. Y., December. 7, 1822 and married Joseph M. Simonds Dec. 3rd, 1847, Four children came to them, Albert, their only son, dying in childhood. Those living are Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. Wellington Roys and Mrs. Frank Macomber, of Dickinson Center. Mr. Simonds died April 17,1900, and since that time Mrs. Simonds has lived mostly with her children, who have very kindly cared for her at their several homes. Her funeral was held at the M. E. Church Monday, Rev. J. P. Dunham officiating. Several grandchildren are left to mourn one of the kindest of grandmothers. Interment was made beside her husband and son in Mound Hill cemeteryWednesday, 5/4/1904 C & F

Allegedly, Claude was an abusive alcoholic and earned his living as a salesman. Three years after Hugh was born, he and Mary divorced.
They both remarried. Hugh eventually had a half-brother Howard Carpenter and
a half-sister Louise Rex. Mary's second husband was Robert F. Rex. Mary became physically violent and had to be committed to an asylum in Massilon, Ohio where she died.Claude's second wife was Maude according to the 1910 Garretsville, Ohio Census. During the 1910 Census there was a Banerd Carpenter at the residence aged 11. Maude was aged 32.
