Gertie’s brother Cliff married Lillian May Carpenter Seaman’s daughter Hazel. So the families were entwined.
Grandma Gertie was born in Iowa. She and her brother Cliff and half-uncle Jasper Clapper were raised
by her parents Archer Rose and Matilda Clapper Rose in Iowa.
They moved to South Dakota when Gertie was just 16 - shortly after her 17th birthday, her Mom,
Matilda (Tillie) died. Gertie kept house for her father, her brother and her young half-uncle until Archer remarried. He married James Edward Carpenter’s widow, Mary Elizabeth Morris Carpenter - so my Grandma Gertie and Grandpa Joe were step siblings until their marriage.
Gertie’s brother Cliff married Lillian May Carpenter Seaman’s daughter Hazel. So the families were entwined. My Grandma Gertie’s mother-in-law was also her step-mother. Mary Elizabeth Morris Carpenter Rose had a strong impact on Gertie’s attitudes and beliefs. Mary Elizabeth Morris Carpenter Rose was a strong influence on my mother’s siblings also.
Joe and Gertie moved to Wausau, Marathon County, Wisconsin in 1919 when my mother was 2 years old. Per Sue Kettner

Meuse–Argonne offensive
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meuse%E2%80%93Argonne_offensive
The Meuse–Argonne offensive (also known as the Meuse River–Argonne Forest offensive,[6] the Battles of the Meuse–Argonne, and the Meuse–Argonne campaign) was a major part of the final Allied offensive of World War I that stretched along the entire Western Front. It was fought from September 26, 1918 until the Armistice of November 11, 1918, a total of 47 days. The Meuse–Argonne offensive was the largest in United States military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers. It is the deadliest battle in American history, resulting in over 350,000 casualties including 28,000 German lives, 26,277 American lives and an unknown number of French lives. U.S. losses were worsened by the inexperience of many of the troops, the tactics used during the early phases of the operation and the widespread onset of the global influenza outbreak called the "Spanish Flu".BOOK: image
