DEATH:
Jim Carpenter has 8 July 1942 for the death per family bible.
Find A Grave (below) has 9 Jul 1942 and cites the Arkansas Death Index and the 9 Jul 1942 is on his grave marker.
Since he died in his sleep, there is a possibility that he died before midnight instead of after midnight. Thus using the dual date of death as 8/9 Jul 1942 is appropriate since he died in his sleep.GRAVE: image plus obit image indicating that he died in his sleep.

W. Carpenter Dies in Sleep
The Journal-Advance, Gentry, Arkansas
Thursday, July 9, 1942
Isaac W. Carpenter, prominent Benton county pioneer and well-known throughout Arkansas, was found dead in his
bed Wednesday morning, having passed in his sleep. He was born April 20, 1852 in Crestline, Richland county,
Ohio, and at the age of three his parents moved overland by oxen team to Sauk county, Wis. Mr. Carpenter was the
only member of the Carpenter family to take up residence outside Wisconsin. In 1897 he moved his family to
Gentry before it was a town. He was active about his home to the last and often claimed he was the “oldest old-timer
still on the job” here.
After two years on a small farm, in 1899 he entered the grocery business which he later expanded to take in a large
furniture line and one of the most completely equipped mortuaries in Northwest Arkansas. In 1909 he retired from
the business which he sold to his sons, Ray and Roy, who in 1929 opened the modern Carpenter building now
standing on Main Street.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Gentry Methodist church. On April 20, 1942, he celebrated his 90th birthday at
the home where he has lived for the past 45 years. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter observed their 65th wedding anniversary
on October 30, 1940.
Survivors are his wife Keren; five children, Ross and Mayor R.L. (“Roy”) Carpenter, Gentry, Mrs. Addie Stillman,
Biloxi, Miss., Mrs. E.E. (“Mattie”) Freeman, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Emma Westenhaver, Reedsburg, Wis.; one
brother, George, Baraboo, Wis.; one sister, Mrs. Eliza Claridge, Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
A simple funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Carpenter home by Rev. D.P. Kaiper, local
Methodist minister. Burial will be in the family lot in Gentry cemetery under the direction of Wasson Funeral HomeE-MAIL: attachment

Hi John:
Not sure if you have an interest in the attachment. It's the City of Genrtry's application to have the Carpenter /Store/Mortuary placed on the National Registry of Historic Places - application was accepted. Two minor errors about the family biographical section - 1) I.W. Carpenter's wife spelled her first name "Keren"; and, third daughter, Margaret not included in the list of children. She married a mortician in Kansas City and was a licensed embalmer herself, one of the first females in Missouri to obtain licensure. A great-grandson is still running the business. I met him 18 months ago during a cross country trip to Wisconsin.
Jim
PS I.W. (Isaac William) Carpenter was one of the two infants on the wagon trip from Ohio to Wisconsin in 1853.

Death, Carpenter
The Free Press, Reedsburg, Wisconsin
Thursday, November 17, 1898
Margaret, wife of Daniel Carpenter, died Nov. 12, 1898, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Claridge, in
Reedsburg, Wis., after suffering from pneumonia about two weeks.
Mrs. Carpenter was born Jan. 12, 1829, in Richland Co., Ohio, was married July 24, 1851. In 1853 they came to
Wisconsin, and settled in the town of Franklin, Sauk Co., and here on the farm they raised their family of five
children, consisting of I.W. Carpenter, of Orchard City, Ark.; Alice M. Bear, of Black Hawk, Wis., Lorinda J.
Morgan, Eliza Claridge and Geo. Carpenter, all of whom were present at her funeral. She leaves behind seventeen
grandchildren and two aged brothers.
During the past 10 months she was permitted to live since her husband’s death, she bore her sorrow bravely and was
ever busy, helpful and comforting to those around her. Her greatest joy was the little children around her; as did
Jesus, who claimed her, she loved the little ones. Without a struggle she fell asleep in His loving arms.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, at the Methodist church, Rev. G.N. Foster officiating.GRAVE: image

The Journal-Advance, Gentry, Arkansas
Thursday, October 21, 1909
Miss Matie A. Sheldon and Roy L. Carpenter were married Wednesday, Oct. 20th, at 6:30 p.m. at the house of the
bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. P.G. Sheldon. The contracting parties are both well known to our readers, the groom
being one of our leading merchants and most progressive citizens, needs no introduction. The bride has been
prominent in Gentry social circles for the past four years and is a charming entertainer in her home. At the appointed
hour, Mrs. J.R. Bever, who presided at the piano, rendered Mendelssohn’s Wedding March to which the bridal party
marched into the parlor where rev. J.M. Bull tied the nuptial knot while the pianist softly played “Melodies of
Love.”
The bride was attired in a white messaline silk gown trimmed in Valenciennes lace; the groom wore conventional
black.
The parlor was decorated with autumn leaves and red roses; one corner being draped into a lace canopy from the
center of which huge a large wedding bell under which the bridal party stood during the ceremony. Miss Marie Carl
attired in an elaborate white gown acted as bridesmaid, while Ray Carpenter, a brother of the groom, was best man.
After the ceremony the guests repaired to the dining room where a sumptuous repast was served; after the inner man
was satisfied the evening was spent in social conversation, music, etc.
About 40 guests, the greater part of whom were immediate relatives of the contracting parties, witnessed the pretty
ceremony and enjoyed one of the most pleasant evenings. The happy couple were recipients of many valuable and
useful presents, many coming from parties north and south.
The new cottage home on Otis Avenue is about ready for occupancy and the many friends of the young couple will
be pleased to meet them at home in a short time.MARRIAGE: 1909

HON. GEORGE CARPENTER. It would be difficult to name an essential element of advancement and development of Sauk County, and more particularly of the community of Baraboo, that does no bear the impress of the strong individuality of Hon. George Carpenter. He has been a very important factor in the industrial and commercial activity of the county, has been a leader among its farmers and stockmen, has advanced its moral and educational interests, has been one of its prominent representatives in the field of politics and in public life, and has founded business enterprises that stand as monuments to his enterprise and well directed efforts.
Mr. Carpenter was born in the Town of Franklin, Sauk County, Wisconsin April 22, 1866, and is the son of Daniel and Margaret (Thompson) Carpenter. His father was born in Newark, Ohio, May 2, 1828, and was married at Lexington, in that state, to Margaret Thompson, who was born in Mansfield, Ohio, January 13, 1829. Some time after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter came to Wisconsin, and in October, 1853, secured a land warrant in the Town of Franklin, where they made their home for many years and developed a well-cultivated farm. In 1885, they retired from active life and moved to Reedsburg, where both passed away at the age of sixty-nine years. They were devout members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and were exemplary people in every way. Mr. Carpenter was an industrious citizen, of sterling integrity, who lead a life of absolute probity, it being said of him that he never uttered an oath during his lifetime. In politics he was a republican, but was not a seeker of public office, being satisfied to pass his existence in the pursuits of agriculture. On two occasions he endeavored to enlist in the Union army for service during the Civil war, but in each case was rejected by the examining officers. However, he had four brothers who fought in the uniform of the North: Isaac, Justin, LaFayette and John H. The last named is serving as a member of the county board of supervisors of Sauk County, of which his nephew, George, is also a member, and resides at Spring Green, Wisconsin. LaFayette is now a resident near Lexington, Ohio. These two are the only ones now surviving of a family of ten sons and one daughter. Daniel and Margaret Carpenter were the parents of seven children, of whom five survive, namely: I. W., a resident of Gentry, Arkansas; Alice, who is the wife of J. H. Bear, of Spring Green, Wisconsin; Lorinda, who the widow of George W. Morgan, who was in the lumber business with George Carpenter during the early days; Eliza, who is the wife of John H. Claridge, who was George Carpenter’s first partner during the early days, when they did grubbing by hand; and George.
George Carpenter received his education in the public schools of Sauk County and early showed himself possessed of more than ordinary industry and ambition. By the time he was seventeen years of age he was deeply interested in the stock business, and became a shipper at that time, also buying stock for and with E. W. Evans and on his own account. This business has always had a large share of his attention, for it was this enterprise in which he really secured his start. When he was but nineteen years of age, he took entire charge of the home place, which he operated successfully for three years, and then became interested in the lumber business in Reedsburg, where he also was engaged as a building contractor with G. W. Morgan and John H. Claridge, as the Morgan Building Company. The venture occupied his attention for two years, at the end of which time he went to Illinois. There he homesteaded a tract for a short time, but soon gave up the venture, as he felt he had been deceived as to the crops, which were not those of Sauk County, and that there was no place like Wisconsin. Mr. Carpenter’s experience in the Prairie State led him to believe the water supply was poor and that the neighbors were not so friendly, helpful or hospitable as they were in the county of his birth, and he returned to Wisconsin and for one summer worked in the employ of the Morgan Building Company. Following this he purchased the William Hubing farm, on which he carried on operations for seven years, later was the owner of the Cahoon farm near Baraboo, which he cultivated for nine years, and then bought the Brown place, in which he retained a one-half interest. Mr. Carpenter’s next venture was at Faulkton, South Dakota, where
he spent one summer, then returning to Baraboo, where he established his present business, the Deppe-Carpenter Lumber Company, of which he is still president. In starting this business, Mr. Carpenter purchased twelve acres of land adjoining the City of Baraboo, built a lumber yard, erected suitable business buildings, and in a short time had established one of the fast-growing enterprises of the city, and one which later extended materially by taking over the interests of the Stewart Lumber Company. In connection with this business he handles a general line of building material, feed, produce, etc., and the management of this business occupies the greater part of his attention, although he is also extensively engaged in the buying, breeding, selling and shipping of cattle. When his son Floyd was fourteen years of age, the latter expressed a desire to enter the cattle business, and Mr. Carpenter, remembering his own early success in that line bought for him the Thomas Barker farm, a 335-acre tract, which was equipped as an up-to-date cattle farm. This has proved an investment more valuable by far than it could have been expected to be at its start, for it is now nationally known as one of the best stock farms in America for the breeding of Shorthorn cattle. The cattle from the Carpenter place have won over 500 first prizes and more than 100 championships; including the grand championship and the championships of Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Toronto (Canada), Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and Missouri. In lots of 50 and 100 head the Carpenter farm has topped the three leading sales in the United States in prices.
Mr. Carpenter has been a lifelong republican and at various times has held public office. He served one term in the Wisconsin Legislature, and was re-nominated by a 739 majority larger than ever before received by a candidate for that office. That he is an excellent debater is evidenced by the opinion of Senator Everett, who said that no man in the Legislature could influence more votes on the floor than could Mr. Carpenter. At present he is one of the county board commissioners and one of that body’s most energetic workers. With his family, Mr. Carpenter belongs to the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a member of the Masons, the Knights of Pythias, the Beavers and the Modern Woodmen of America, and is vice president of the Skillet Creek Farmers Club.
Mr. Carpenter was married in 18865 to Miss Minnie Utendorfer, who was born at Spring Green, Sauk County, Wisconsin, in 1867, a daughter of George and Marie (Brown) Utendorfer, natives of Germany, who came to the United States as young people. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter had three children: Vertie, who died at the age of nine years; Floyd, born July 1, 1897: and Marie, born in May, 1903.

Subject: Marriage of George and Maude Battles Carpenter
Hi John:
The following entry is on page 71 of 139 of your Justin Carpenter sub-file (Your Number for George Carpenter is 134361):
George married (2-MRIN:69119) Maude A. Battles-197782 about 1928/1929 in , Sauk, Wisconsin, USA. Maude was born in Jan 1882 in ,, Wisconsin, USA. She died in 1957 in ,, Wisconsin, USA. She was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo, Sauk, Wisconsin, USA.
I was at the Family History Center Thursday and found the following newspaper article reprint on-line from the 8 May 1928 issue of "The Capital Times", Madison, WI - Date Line Baraboo, WI (probably written by a Baraboo stringer):
"The marriage of George Carpenter to Miss Maude Battles in Milwaukee came as a surprise to friends here on the return of Rev. E. Harris who went to Milwaukee and performed the ceremony at the home of Mr. Carpenter's daughter, Mrs. Earl Haugh. Mr. Carpenter is a well known farmer of this city and the bride has been a stenographer with the Grotophorst, Quale and Langer law firm here for many years."
Note: Milwaukee is in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
I did find a birth record for Maude Battles (birth year is 1928) but did not record the exact date or city. I can probably find it again. (She probably died in Baraboo, but I can find that as well.)
Also, I left a photocopy for you at the Center's front desk which records an obituary for Carpenter relative by marriage, Rita L. (Fargen) Prouty, who is your #135435 - her marriage to Merton Royal Prouty is on page 103 of 139. I can email you a pdf of the obit if you prefer.

Elizabeth Lanning "Bessie" Case
COMMENT: From Jim Carpenter
At the time of her death, my grandmother, Elizabet Lanning "Bessie" Case Carpenter-135362, was a resident of the Rocky Knoll Health Care Facility which is located in a rural area of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, designated as the Town of Plymouth (aka, Plymouth Township). There is also a City of Plymouth in the same county. Her Certificate of Death clearly states she died at Rocky Knoll HCF; I can provide a copy of the CofD if you would like it..I spent my youth in the City of Sheboygan and know the exact location of the Rocky Knoll HCF.
FYI - In Wisconsin, a Town or Township is an unincorporated jurisdiction within a county. Wisconsin towns are thus similar to civil townships in most other states. All residents of Wisconsin who do not live in a city or village live in a town. (I have elected to use "Township" rather than "Town of" when naming Wisconsin places to avoid a listing of place names all listed alphabetically as "Town of aaa, Town of bbb.)PARENTS:

Dreadful Fatal Accident Saturday
The Weekly Home News, Spring Green, Wisconsin Thursday, August 31, 1914
Robert, the 3-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Carpenter met with instant death last Saturday in a shocking accident. With his father he was riding on a loaded manure spreader on the way to a field, when he fell beneath the wheels and his life was crushed out.
Mr. Carpenter had taken a short cut to his field through the fair ground and was holding his little son on the seat beside him. While going down the sharp pitch in the road on the south side of the grounds one of the wheels ran into a rut, tipping the seat, which is hinged, and throwing them both out. With the heavy load behind them the team could not be stopped soon enough to avoid the accident and one of the rear wheels passed over the boy's head, crushing out his brains.
Robert had been enjoying himself all morning in company with his father while the latter was caring for his stock and doing chores, and they were just starting their second trip to the field when the accident occurred.
It is one of the most shocking things that has happened in Spring Green and it cast a gloom over the entire community. Robert was a bright, healthy, lovable child and his parents have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
Besides his parents, he leaves an 11-months-old brother, his counterpart in rugged health and activity.
The funeral service was held at the home Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Isaac B. Tracy, pastor of the Congregational church. The relatives from a distance who were present were: Mr. and Mrs. Ed Case, Mrs. Alice Ellsworth, Harley Martin, Mrs. Jo. Hodson, Lone Rock; Mrs. R.L. Moore, Gotham; Miss Alice Case, Readstown, and Mrs. Margie Hoyt, Manchester, Iowa.
Compiler's Note: the "fair ground" mentioned above was converted to the Spring Green Municipal Golf Course in the mid 1920's. While the James Carpenter farm property abutted the western edge of the fair ground in 1914, plat maps from 1900-1920 do not show that he owned the land to the south; he could have rented that cropland.

Death: 12 Feb 1929 (aged 72) Athens County, Ohio, USA
Burial: West Union Street Cemetery, Athens, Athens County, Ohio, USA
Memorial #: 91829447
Bio:
MR. MURPHY IS DEAD AT HOME – Andrew Murphy, 73 years old, former Athens County official, died at the family home, 50 Mill Street, last night at 10:35 o'clock, following a long illness from hardening of the arteries.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Athens First Presbyterian Church, with burial in the West Union Street Cemetery.
Friends of the family, who are requested not to send flowers, may call at the home after 4 o'clock this afternoon, it was announced.
Born at Ringgold, Morgan County, Andrew Murphy took over the responsibility of the family at the age of 13 years when his father, a farmer, died.
As a young man he worked in coal mines and at farming and later for about ten years was a traveling salesman for a grocery house in this district. He lived at Trimble for a time, being postmaster of that village and later had a livery stable at Glouster. He also was engaged in the furniture business for some time.
In 1902 he came to Athens to become sheriff of Athens County, having been elected in November of the preceding year on the Republican ticket.
For many years he had been one of the leaders of the Republican Party in the county and widely known.
He engaged in business in Athens with his sons, Hal and Dal, for several years after retiring from the office of sheriff after four years of service.
In 1921 he was appointed to the Board of County Commissioners serving on that board as its president for about six years, being elected twice in that period.
He gave his time freely to this work, being in the office almost every day for six years.
He leaves a widow and two sons, Hal and Dal, of Athens.
One son, Fred, died several years ago and another son, Jesse, died in his childhood.
The eldest of a family of children, Mr. Murphy was the last to die. (February 13, 1929, Athens Messenger)Memorial presented and maintained in conjunction with Murphy Nation, a multi-generational family history gateway dedicated to celebrating, documenting, preserving and providing increased awareness and access for the Murphy family pioneers of Morgan County, Ohio and their descendants and families.
