French Croix de Guerre <------------ French medal for braveryCROIX DE GUERRE:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croix_de_Guerre
The Croix de Guerre (French: [kʁwa də ɡɛʁ], Cross of War) is a military decoration of France. It was first created in 1915 and consists of a square-cross medal on two crossed swords, hanging from a ribbon with various degree pins. The decoration was awarded during World War I, again in World War II, and in other conflicts. The Croix de Guerre was also commonly bestowed on foreign military forces allied to France.
The Croix de Guerre may either be awarded as an individual or unit award to those soldiers who distinguish themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy. The medal is awarded to those who have been "mentioned in dispatches", meaning a heroic deed or deeds were performed meriting a citation from an individual's headquarters unit. ...MILITARY: 36th Division in WWI

To the north, only a short distance, the Meuse-Argonne offensive was under way. The American attack between the Argonne and the Meuse was being aided by the Fourth French Army in the Champagne just to the west. In the latter sector, the enemy stubbornly resisted every attack and on October 3, the 36th was transferred to the Fourth French Army with which the Second American Division was already serving. On the night of October 4, units of the division began moving from the Pocancy area to the vicinity of Suippes and Somme-Suippes. The 71st Brigade began the relief of the Second Division on the night of October 6, on an irregular line about four kilometers long between St. Etienne and Medeah Farm, facing generally north. Brigade headquarters were immediately established on Blanc Mont, approximately five kilometers northwest of Somme-Py.The 71st Brigade (141st and 142nd Infantry Regiments) attacked on the morning of October 8 with troops of the Second Division acting as reserves. The attack was a phase of an operation by the Second, 11th and 21st French Corps to extend the allied lines to Machault and Semide. The lines fluctuated, but the day's operation netted the brigade a substantial gain. Sixty-six officers and 1,227 men were lost during the day. ...
Awards for valor to members of the division were: Distinguished Service Crosses, 30; Croix de Guerres, 128, and Congressional Medals of Honor, two.

goryid=381) I may have FINALLY after 30+ years found a home for
Daniel DeWitt Carpenter!! I thought that his father was Daniel and his
mother Patience. However, that information may now be wrong. I now
think that his parents may have been Daniel Carpenter and Nancy (Ann) English.
And that his grandfather was Elijah who was married to Patience
Salisbury.
My only problem is that I can only find two children for Daniel and Ann
although I am sure there were more children. The two that I found were 9
years apart in age. They were born in Madison County, New York though and
Daniel DeWitt Carpenter was alleged to have been born in Oswego County. I
do believe the two counties are next to each other though. Is that right,
John? Daniel DeWitt Carpenter was born c. 1819 and Daniel and Ann's two
children I found were born in 1818 and 1827.
I believe Daniel DeWitt also served in Co A, 124th Infantry for New York
during the Civil War from the County of Oswego. He was already living in
Wisconsin and married for about 20 years when the Civil War took place and
served for a year at the age of 41.
I did trace his wife's (Emma Emerson Logan) family back to Oneida County,
New York.PARENTS: His parents were both born in NY. He had a brother, name unknown, probably James. That brother married and his daughter (Daisy is listed as 8 months old and born in CO) was living with Daniel D. Carpenter's family in the 1880 US Census in Montana. Just above Niece Daisy is a Laura Carpenter listed as a Daughter in law - not Sister in law. By default, she is the wife of Frank.
NAME: From Montana Marriages, 1889-1947 of son William.

P O BOX 416 LAUREL NV 59044
