BENJAMIN CARPENTER, retired farmer; born Sept. 80, 1794, in Orange Co., N. Y. Married, May 10,. 1815, to Miss Jane Keen, daughter of Capt. Keen, a prominent merchant of Orange Co. Although but 20 years of age at time of his marriage, he had previously served one year in the war with England; his regiment was stationed at Harlem Heights. They came West in 1845 and settled on farm in township of Brookfield, Waukesha Co. Mrs. Carpenter died in 1866; she was the mother of eleven children, only four of whom now survive; the four are married and live in four different States. He was married in March, 1868, to Mrs. Naomi Barnes, who died in October, 1873, without issue. He sold the main farm in 1868, and lived on a small place near the Junction till 1876, when he removed to village of Waukesha, where he now resides. In Brookfield, he served several terms as Justice of the Peace. For the last twelve years he has not taken an active part in business. He married his last wife in September, 1874; her maiden name was M. G. McCourdy; she died in 1875. He owns a comfortable corner residence on West Side, near the stone schoolhouse. He now lives with a family who rent his house. Although 86 years of age. he is still smart and cheerful.

Subject: [WIWAUKES] Re: Benjamin CARPENTER
Date: 8 Aug 2003 Is this the Benjamin Carpenter referred to in the "Little House in Brookfield"? I imagine you could start with the plat maps for this time period -- I seem to recall that Carpenters are listed early on. Mine are put away for now and I'm not in a position to pull them out, but I am sure the Waukesha County Historical Society would look them up for you. "The Carpenters lived two houses away from the Quiners, and they were Caroline's favorite neighbors. Father and Mr. Carpenter had settled in Brookfield at the same time and helped clear each other's land and build their log cabins and frame houses..." This family had a son Charlie -- Mrs. Carpenter was named Sarah, according to the book.  ...
REPLY:
Calhoun Road is East of Brookfield Road. I recently looked up the land records for the Carpenter family for another researcher on the 1873 plat maps. They lived in Section 34 and 35 in the town of Brookfield. Calhoun Road divides the two sections. I believe there were Carpenters also across Greenfield in the Town New Berlin.
Opps ...
Sorry -- I meant to say Brookfield Road just north of Greenfield Avenue. At that time, I think Greenfield Ave. may have been called Arcadia or Arcadian.
Comment:
Thank you Penny and Gene for the information. While I believe this Benjamin is an ancestor of mine, it is not the Benjamin Carpenter I am looking for information on. The Benjamin I am looking for had a wife named Mary and several children: George and Elvira (believed to be twins), John, Barnard, Amelia, Irena, William and Ellen. They came to Waukesha probably from Dutchess County, New York c 1850.

Subject: RE: Carpenter Family Question
John,
...
Just yesterday I found the Waukesha Freeman newspaper archives online and found this Death notice in the Waukesha Freeman newspaper December 18, 1884 pg. 8 column 2. Carpenter – At his home in Waukesha, December 16th, Benjamin F. Carpenter, aged 90 years and three months. Mr. Carpenter was a veteran of the war of 1812 . . . The funeral takes place today at (5):00 o’clock pm. That answers his death and burial dates. In the December 11th issue of the Waukesha Freeman pg. 4, column 4, there is an interesting article about Benjamin Carpenter. Apparently about a week before, it actually says “on Tuesday last” another newspaper The Sentinel erroneously reported the death of Benjamin Carpenter. Unfortunately neither one of them gave any family information. Now I need to find a copy of The Sentinel to see what they said.
Thank you again for all of your help with my questions and for the great work you have done and continue to do on the Carpenter family.
Glenene

Hi John:
Alas, I cannot provide more info on Alfred C. buried at Laurel Grove
(except I shall soon have a photo of my daughter in front of the
mausoleum!).  I can tell you that it is an impressive structure, and cannot
be missed as one drives aroung the "loop" running through Laurel Grove.
Also, it is very near to the gravesite of Samuel B. Carpenter
(8/8/1828-4/3/1871) and Phoebe Knight his wife (7/27/1835-10/18/1913).
Near ... but not seeming part of same family plot.

NEHGS - Marriage Notices from the New York Evening Post, 1801-1890
At Goshen on Tuesday the 2nd instant by the Rev. Mr. Ker, MR. JEROMUS JOHNSON, merchant of this City to MISS MARY CARPENTER, eldest daughter of James Carpenter, Esq. of that place.  Date: 1802 3/8

BOOK:
THE ANCESTRY AND DESCENDANTS OF COL. SOLOMON CARPENTER OF GOSHEN, NEW YORK. 1974. (Descendants of Col. Solomon Carpenter (1690-1762) of Goshen, New York)
...
(Following is a condensed version of an eight part series written by Goshen Historian Elizabeth Sharts for the independent Republican of Goshen a few years ago. Parts 1-7 are taken directly from a story in the Dec. 20, 1896 edition Of The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and the "historian's notes" are Miss Shorts' comments. Part 8 is based upon the book Traditions and Recollections by Carpenter descendant Roswell C. Coleman and in her note following this section Miss Sharts gives his family background.)
In the attic of an old Goshen, N.Y. homestead which has been in the Carpenter family for almost 200 years were recentlv found five trunks of letters, historical documents and keep sakes. They had never been out of family keeping and had not been exposed to light of day for upward of half a century, so were in truth rich With dust of ages.
Some of the documents were commissions bestowed upon fami- - 39 - ly members who gave long and honorable service in the Revolutionary War. Others told of quaint and amusing experiences in stage coach days, years before the iron horse had made its way throughout the land. Some of the letters related to the period when slavery was an established institution in even the good old Empire State. To sum up briefly the treasures discovered in that wonderful attic, it may be said that unbound volumes of unpublished history were found in those chests.
The treasure trove was discovered one day last summer when a visit was made to the garret by a young descendant determined to leave no trunk unturned. A former owner of the house, a Miss Johnson, had not allowed anyone to visit the garret. What a storehouse it proved to be -- old spinning wheels, rare autographs, old prints, etc.
Solomon Carpenter, original holder of the property, went in about 1703 from Jamaica, Long Island, to Goshen and purchased a small part of the farm which, under the ownership of the Carpenter family, grew to be 700 acres. His son James built the present homestead and the little shed in the rear is where the slaves had their quarters.
(HISTORIAN'S NOTE: 1703 is the date of the Indian deed known as the Wawayanda Patent. Official records indicate Solomon Carpenter came to Goshen with the first settlers in 1714. An old news item mentions a cabin built by a Frenchman named L'Hommedieu as being on the land he bought. Solomon Carpenter is listed as one of the original owners of the Town Rights Lots alloted in 1721.)
Nehemiah and James Carpenter were sons of Solomon. A daughter of James wed Jeromus Johnson, brother of Gen. Jeremiah Johnson whose name is interwoven with the history of Kings County. The old house has had no additions for 150 years, or since James Carpenter's time.
...
Jeromus Johnson and his wife, the former Mary Carpenter, had three sons and three daughters. Only one son and one daughter married and the house has descended to Mrs. Mary Peloubet and her daughter, Miss Fannie, who resided until recently at 482 Greene Ave., this city (Brooklyn), and who removed to the Carpenter homestead at Goshen in April. They will make the old dwelling their home. The house is sheltered by trees and surrounded by 10 acres.
It was Miss Peloubet (Fannie) who discovered the treasures, - 40 - which also included two Revolutionary cartridge boxes with bayonet, scabbard and cross belts. One of the most precious heirlooms is a carved mahogany bedstead almost identical to the one on which George Washington died.
Mrs. Peloubet was named for her grandmother -- Mary Carpenter who married Jeromus Johnson -- who was one of the school girls at Trenton who scattered flowers in the pathway of Washington as he passed through that New Jersey town. There was much that was romantic and heroic about the Carpenter women of Colonial days.

REPLY:
Hello Robin,
The John Carpenter appears to be RIN 21082 in the CE CD 2001.  He was born 6 Feb 1796 in Minisink, Orange, NY.
His son Levi Carpenter-21099 is listed in the 1870 Census for Lumberland, Sullvan, NY.  His father is Benjamin Carpenter-12760 and is number 309 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 84.  His family is on page 156 (#134).  His grandfather is Col. Solomon Carpenter-4738 who is Number 75 in the Carpenter Memorial on Page 61.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had a brother named James b. 6 April 1805 in Minisink.  He would have been 11 in 1816.
The above John Carpenter-21082 had an Uncle James Carpenter-12759 b. 1752 in Goshen, Orange, NY d. April 1817.
(NOTE:  This would match with, "James was also assessed in 1814, but not in 1818."
James Carpenter-12759 had a son named James Carpenter-21074 b. 1788 in Goshen, Orange, NY but nothing more is known about him.
I found only 1 of Col. Solomon Carpenter's descendants named Joesph that even came close to being alive at the right time.  This is Joseph S. Carpenter-23416 b. 19 May 1815 in Amity, Orange, NY who was son of Solomon Carpenter-23412 b. 24 March 1768.

OTHER POSSIBILES Joseph Carpenters  ...
I have a Joseph Carpenter-26996 b. abt 1776 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 331 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.No family listed.   Probably settled in Palmyra, NY.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-27042 b. abt 1765 in Newburgh, Orange, NY who is Number 333 in the book "The Carpenter Family in America" by Daniel H. Carpenter, 1901.  No family listed.  He died in New York City, unmarried.

I have a Joseph Carpenter-49408 b. 15 Dec 1790 in Goshen, Orange, NY.  E-MAIL: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 From: "Marcia Buffett" To: "John R. Carpenter" CC: "Ken Warkentine"
Dear John and Ken:
Do either of you have anything on a Joseph C. Carpenter of Northville? He had a daughter Libbie who was married on March 31, 1880 to Harmon Fisher a barber in Northville. Thanks, Marcia
NOTE: This Joseph had a sister named Rebecca whose first husband died in Northville.  Was the Joseph C. above a descendant of this Joseph?

I have a Joseph Carpenter-88893 b. 30 Sep 1783 in Chester, Orange, NY d. 21 May 1829 in Goshen, Orange, NY. He was the son of Jesse Carpenter-2688 who was Number 340 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 88.

I hope this helps.

Buried beside John Carpenter & his parents.
John married Catherine Westfall ABT 1818 in Orange Co., New York. They were the parents of Sarah, Aseneth, James, Eleanor, Margaret, Benjamin, Levi, Simeon, Solomon, Catherine, John, and Martha. In 1880 he was living with his daughter Catherine Malvin.
BIOGRAPHY: Portrait and biographical record of Rockland and Orange Counties New York, containing Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens of the Counties (New York and Chicago: Chapman Publishing Co., 1895). p. 870-871
... John D. Carpenter married Catherine Westfall, daughter of Simon Westfall, of Sparrow Bush. Her grandfather, Simeon Westfall, was a son of Simon Westfall, who owned the old stone house and mill at Carpenter's Point. After his marriage Mr. Carpenter for many years made his home in Carpenter's Point, but the last years of himself and wife were passed in Farley, Dubuque County, Iowa, his two son's having removed to that state. His wife died at the age of Sixty-four, and he survived until in his ninetieth year.
In religious belief he was identified with the Methodist Episcopal Church. His two daughters still live at Port Jervis; Margaret, the widow of George Cuddeback, of the town of Deerpark; and Asenath, who became the wife of Nathan Skinner, and is now living with her son, John N. At the age of fourteen years she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, but later she identified herself with the Reformed Church, and to this organization she has since belonged.
The wife of John D. Carpenter was of Dutch decent, but the Westfall family was represented in America from an early period of its settlement. The first of the name to come here were two brothers, Julian and Symon, who emigrated from Holland and settled in New York. Julian, Jr., a son of Symon, was the father of Simon, and a son of the latter, Simeon by name, was the father of David. Simon married Jennette Westbrook, April 17, 1743, the ceremony being performed by Justice Peter Kuyckendall. As above stated, the stone house and mill at Carpenter's Point were erected by him. Later they were partially destroyed, but were rebuilt, and the house stood as a residence until about twenty years ago.

Sarah “Sally” Carpenter
Birth: 20 Jun 1817 Deerpark, Orange County, New York, USA
Death: 6 Jan 1890 (aged 72) Port Jervis, Orange County, New York, USA
Burial: Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Jervis, Orange County, New York, USA
Memorial #: 195107455
Bio:
Miss Sarah Carpenter, a member of one of the oldest families in the town of Deer Park, died Monday of general debility, at the home of her sister, Mrs Margaret Cuddeback, widow of the late George Cuddeback, residing on the Huguenot road, about two miles out of town.  She was aged 73 years and 6 months.
Miss Carpenter is survived by five sisters and two brothers, as follows:  Eleanor Swartwout, widow of late Cornelius Swartwout of Pike County, Pa.; Aseneth Skinner (w/o Nathan Skinner) of the town of Deerpark; Margaret Cuddeback, widow of the late George Cuddeback; Mrs. Amanda Malvin and Elizabeth of Iowa, and Solomon and Wesley, also residents of the state of Iowa.  She was the daughter of John D.  and Katherine Westfall Carpenter, who resided about one-fourth of a mile of Carpenter’s Point, at what was formerly known as Carpenter’s Ferry (The ferry and village of Carpenter’s Point were named in honor of Benjamin Carpenter, the father of John D.) Mr and Mrs Carpenter reared a family of 11 sons (or children) of whom those mentioned above are still living.  One of those sons, the late Dr. Benjamin Carpenter, was a prominent physician in this town 30 years ago.
Sarah Carpenter, or “Sally” as she was familiarly known, was a seamstress by trade, and was well known in every old family in thr length and breadth of the Neversink valley, and in the Delaware valley from Port Jervis to Brick House, and with exceptions of a few years in the state of Iowa and several years in New York city, her whole life was spent in Port Jervis and vicinity. For many years she had an extensive (for those days) dress making establishment on Main Street, this village, near Mr A. H. Peck’s store, but her health failing she gave up the business and again went among her old patrons.  For the past 15 years she had been in poor health and lived with her relatives.  She was a kind hearted, Christian woman and was a welcome visitor at any home in the valley.
The funeral was held at the home of Mrs Margaret Cuddeback, the residence of the late Abraham Cuddeback, Esq., at 2 o’clock p. m., Wednesday, Rev. Livingston L. Taylor officiating. Interment in Laurel Grove Cemetery.

A Typical Wedding

This was a typical wedding of those days full and jollity for several days and then the young couple settled down to the serious business of life. At the weddings the jokes at times were practical as in the case of the wedding of John D. Carpenter, great grandfather of Dr. C. N. Skinner. Mr. Carpenter was comparatively short in statute but what he lacked in height was made up in physical vigor and grit and when he and the bride took their places before the minister for the wedding ceremony a guest placed a sheet of paper on the floor for the groom to stand on, to equalize the height of the pair, the bride by -the-way, being about half a head taller. The wag made a serious error for the groom insisted on stopping the ceremony until he walloped the man who had insulted him. Friends intervened, the joker apologized and a half hour later the wedding went on.

These people, whose immediate ancestors had suffered so terribly from the Indian raids in the valley and many had fought in the war of the Revolution, were of the "Early to bed and early to rise etc." class and this wise saying of Poor Richard proved true with them for they were physically strong and active, wealthy considering their wants, and their business judgment was unexcelled.

They were unanimous in opinion for the proprieties and ceremonials. The minister was a most revered gentleman and at his pastoral visits all the members of the household gathered to give grave but most courteous greeting to the dominie, to hear a portion of the Scriptures read and the prayer invoking God's blessing on that household. A part of the ceremony, not to be overlooked was the offering of cake and wine or whiskey to the Dominie. I am speaking now of the days of 80 to 100 years ago.

After the War of 1812-14 … The Methodists living in the vicinity at that time were few. Among them were Joseph Chattle and a Mr. Carpenter , at Carpenter’s Point …
In 1832 a revival occurred, and John D. Carpenter (RIN 60480), with several members of his family, were converted and joined the society. Mr. Carpenter at once became a very active worker. He organized a Sabbath-school, acting as superintendent himself, and furnishing books, etc., for the school, which met first at the house of his father, Benjamin Carpenter, near

Tri-States Rock.
Considerable interest attaches to this solid land-mark. The boundary lines of three States-New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania-intersect at this point. By standing over the copper bolt sunk in the rock a person may be in the three States at the same instant. The rock is at the extreme point of the tongue of land lying between the Delaware and the Neversink, at the mouth of the latter. The whole formation is rocky, and will stand the wear of the floods for centuries to come as it has for centuries past. Visitors will find the rock by an easy walk from Port Jervis, entering the gate of Laurel Grove Cemetery and traversing its quiet paths.
The well-known name, Carpenter's Point, arose from the early settlement of the Carpenter family upon the opposite shore of the Neversink. The old homestead was the present Coonrad Snyder place. The early dwelling-house, and the pioneer store in connection with it, were upon the site of the present residence. The early burials of the Carpenter family were in the orchard upon this place. After the opening of Laurel Grove Cemetery, (in 1856 RIN 60480) Mr. John D. Carpenter purchased a lot near to the extreme point. The remains were removed to this lot. Carpenter's Point is therefore now rightly named in a double sense, both of settlement and burial.
The old ferry upon the turnpike from New-burgh to Milford crossed the Delaware at this point. The exact position of the Tri-States Rock as determined by officers of the United States Coast Survey, given in a report bearing date May 14, 1874, is the following: Latitude, 41° 21' 22.63"; longitude, 74°41’ 40.70’’; azimuth of boundary line, 300° 4. (See annual report of the State geologist of New Jersey for 1874.)

April 1817.

2041. Benjamin Carpenter

Number 920 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 156.
Family on page 277 (# 322).  A Farmer who resided at Deer Park, NY.
He was born in the morning on Monday.
The CM has Wesfall as spouse and the bible record lists only Catherine
Westbrook as spouse. Westfall seems in error.
The death date given as 17 Dec. 1828 belongs to the nephew named Benjamin.

Catherine Westbrook

NAME; Westfall in the CM and Westbrook in the bible record.
Her first name is spelled as both Catherine then Katherine in the bible record.
Katherine Westbrook, wife of Benjamin Carpenter, was born 31st of ____ (We omitted to copy month ) 1807 - the Church record says July.
On her death the bible record lists it as: Cateham (Katherine) Carpenter died Nov. 13, 1876.
SEE: Father's notes.

4882. John Carpenter

Number 2162 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 277.
An unnamed son.  Bible record lists 2 more children.  John and Soveryne.

4883. Soveryne W. Carpenter

His death date is listed under Soveryne W. Campbell in the transcribed bible
record.  Last name as Carpenter under birth.

2046. Nehemiah Carpenter

Number 855 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 150.
Family on page 271 (# 306).

DEATH:He was buried on the farm of his son Vilet, which now the center of
East Syracuse.  His remains were moved to the burying ground of Callamer.
He is recognized as a veteran of the Revolution.

From W. M. Carpenter of Chicago (in the 1880s): "At the outbreak of the
Revolutionary War Nehemiah was living at home on Long Island.  He enlisted
several times, his first service, being we think, under General Putnam in the
Battle of Long Island: It is not known whether or not he went directly from LI
to Dutchess county.  The family name of this branch is said to have been
Nehemiah's.  After the war he removed to Dutchess county, where his son William
was born in 1806; he moved to Manlius, Onondaga county in 1816, which shows
that the family were born in Dutchess county.  There is no doubt but what he is
the great grandson of John who settled in Jamacia.  His mother was Elizabeth
Van Vilet: it is fair to assume that this the correct way of spelling the name,
although her grandson spelled it Vleat, but it is written in the family Bible
"Vilet.""

in America." Also known as the Carpenter Memorial By Amos B. Carpenter, 1898.

E-MAIL: Sat, 8 Apr 2000 From: "fdeweber"
Dear John,
I hope that you can help me.  I am researching my 4th-great grandfather Henry
Carpenter.
The following information about Henry was taken from the book "History of
DuPage County".   Henry
Carpenter native of Washington County, New York.  Born February 22, 1810, died
in DuPage County,
Illinois 1891.  He married Martha Blanchard in Orleans County, New York,
October 14, 1832.  She was a
native of Whitehall, New York.  Her parents were Ahimaaz Blanchard and Mary
(Tolford)
Blanchard. They moved to Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois in 1840.
Henry and Martha had a
son Walter Carpenter, born in NY Nov. 05, 1833, died 1856 in Chicago.  They had
two other children,
both were born in Illinois.  William, 1842, died young, and Martha J. born 1845
( my line).  Henry's
parents were William Carpenter, a native of Westchester County, NY.  He died in
Herkimer County, NY
in 1822.  William married Lois Austin, a native of Saratoga County, NY.  She
died in 1814.  I was hoping
that you might have information on William's Ancestry.  If  I can link Henry to
the "Rehoboth" line, I
would be happy to provide you with the information on Henry's descendants.
Henry was a very
prominent man in DuPage County.  I want to thank you for any assistance that
you can give me.  Your
2000AD CD is going to be a fanastic research tool for a lot of people.  Again
Thank you. Deborah Weber 3208 Mt. Olive-Pt. Isabel Rd. Bethel, Ohio 45106
fdeweber@msn.com

NOTE: He could not have been born in Downer's Grove.  The first child
born there was my 4th great grandfather,
(Henry Carpenter's son-in-law ) Eugene Farrar.  He was born on June 24, 1835.
They were the first
complete family in Downer's Grove. Stanley/Farrar
Downer's Grove 1832-1982, Dunham Montrew   Published by Heritage Festival Task
Force of Downer's
Grove, Illinois 1982 - Also I confirmed this information in a telephone
conversation with the historian at
the Downer's Grove Museum on April 13, 2000.
