1824 and proven Oct. 16, 1826.
BURIAL:
In the burying ground of the Presbyterian Church at Union, in Essex County, NJ
there are five graves in one row with nice plain headstones with inscriptions
as follows: James Carpenter died April 5, 1798 aged 72 years, Edward Carpenter
April 7, 1822 aged 51 years, Hope Carpenter died Sept. 28, 1826 aged 61 years,
Jerusha wife of Hope died Dec. 16, 1861 aged 88 years, Betsey daughter died
Oct. 25, 1823 aged 25 years.

A Letter from A.J. Carpenter of Helena, Montana stated to Amos B. Carpenter
that his great grandfather was this Ashman Carpenter who emigrated from New
Jersey in 1786 to Winona, Canada with his son, William.
Hunterdon county until 1838 when Hopewell became part of Mercer county.
Of the Cotleb Zimmerman line per James Usher. James Usher was wrong, however.
Further research has confirmed why Usher mislabeled certain descendants.

Hope served in the Revolutionary War in the NJ Militia under Captain Peter
Gordon. In Feb. 1775 drafted in Princeton, NJ, into the Hunterdon
Co. NJ Militia under Capt. Peter Gordon against the Tories. Served 3/4 weeks.
In June 1775 during the Battle of Long Island he crossed the Delaware river
with Gen. George Washington then recrossed the Delaware at Coryell's Ferry.
They went to Trenton and took the Hessians by suprise. Served 5 months.
They crossed Delaware at Bordentown, marched up to Trenton and took Princeton.
The army wintered at Rocky Hill and Hope was discharged and went home to
Princeton. Hope was drafted again for Battle of Monmouth.

"Early Settlers of Yates County", by Mrs. Fenton E. Bootes, G.R.S.,
Historian, Gu-Ya-No-Ga Chapter DAR, "Hope Carpenter"
Hope Carpenter was an early settler of the Town of Starkey and
Tyrone, as he and his wife Phebe, and son Jacob and (Jacob's) wife Mary
were early members of the Tyrone Baptist Church in 1815. Also their
children Sally, Ben, and Henry were on a church record. Deacon Lazarus
Ellis of Tyrone, NY, was given as a character reference for Hope
Carpenter when he applied for his pension as a Revolutionary soldier
28SEPT1832. However, he probably was a member of the Plainville,
Starkey, or Dundee Baptist Church as he also gave Rev. Edward Martin of
Starkey as a reference. Rev. Martin was pastor from 1832-42, and died
in 1850 at age 62. His (Hope's) son, Jacob Y. Carpenter, was a deacon
of the church in 1842 and also Lewis Lafever was a deacon in 1832 and
1850. Phebe Carpenter was living with her grandson Lewis Lafever and
his wife in 1850. Hope Carpenter was born in Hunterdon Co.,
NJ on 16MAR1757 and married Phebe (or Abigail) Yost on 24FEB1788. Phebe
was born on 8MAY1773. Phebe may have been a sister of Nicholas Yost who
was born in NJ in 1779. However, this has not been proven by any

Hope Carpenter was living at Princeton, NJ, when he was drafted in
Februrary 1775 in the Hunterdon Co., NJ Militia as a private under Capt.
Peter Gordon to Long Island against the Tories and served three to four
weeks. Served again in April for one week. In June, he served again
for five months and was in the battle of Long Island, in campaign around
New York and were followed by the British to Trenton. He was discharged
at New Brunswick, but reenlisted at once. According to his pension
record, he said, "When we reached Trenton, General Washington walked the
streets all night and it was said he wept". The next morning they
crossed the Delaware and laid there till December 25, recrossed at
Coryell's Ferry, went down to Trenton and took the Hessians. The night
after New Year's, the army crossed the Delaware at Bordentown and
marched up to Trenton and General Washington in the night placed a
cannon in the street to prevent the British from crossing and firing on
them at every attempt. Then he gave an account of the fires burning all
night and marched into and took Princeton. The army spent the rest of
the winter at Rocky Hill. He was discharged and went home to Princeton.
After a week, he was drafted again by Capt. John Mott and kept
guard near Philadelphia. He was in the Battle of Monmouth and described
the battle. He served his country for a period of 2 years and four
months.
Hope Carpenter applied for a pension on Sept. 28, 1832 at age 75,
while he was residing at Starkey, NY. His claim was allowed and issued
Nov. 3, 1835 at $20.00 per year. He gave for references his Captain
Peter Gordon, who was living in Geneva, NY in 1831; Sylvanus Arnold who
helped his father, John, as postmaster at Tyrone, Steuben County;
General William Kernan and Rev. Van Rensellaer Wall of Steuben County,
and Rev. Martin and Deacon Ellis of Tyrone. Among his pension papers is
the affidavit of Peter Gordon who said that Hope Carpenter served under
him as Captain in the NJ Militia and in regular service in the
Continental Line. Hope died May 4, 1840, and his widow, Phebe, applied
for a pension Februrary 9, 1846, a resident of Starkey. At this time,
John D. Carpenter, age 33, deposed he was the son of Hope and Phebe
Carpenter and was the 11th child of his parents and presented the family
record. On August 18, 1848, Phebe applied for an increase of pension
which was allowed.

Revolutionary War Pension Application of Hope Carpenter, New Jersey, War
#18850 Declaration
In order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed June 7, 1832.
State of New York County of Yates: On this 28th day of September,
1832 personally appeared before the judges of the court of common pleas
of the County of Yates now sitting Hope Carpenter a resident of the Town
of Starkey in said county and state aforesaid aged seventy five years on
the sixteenth day of March Last, who being first duly sworn according to
law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain
the benefits of the Act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the
following named officers and served as herein after stated.
That in the month of Februrary in the year 1775(as he believes) he
was drafted in the Militia at Princeton in the county of Hunterdon in
the State of New Jersey where he then resided and went out as a private
under Captain Peter Gordon on to Long Island to disarm the Tories, and
was out at that time before he returned about three or four weeks.
That in the month of April thereafter he was again drafted while
living at Princeton and went out again as a private in the Militia under
said Captain Peter Gordon on to Staten Island to guard the Island, and
was about one week as he believes.
That in the month of June following, he was drafted again in the
Militia and went out under Captain Gordon and when they got to New
Brunswick he enlisted for five months under the said Captain Peter
Gordon in Col. (David) Forman's Regiment and went with him to Long
Island, and they remained there until after the battle on Long Island.
That they marched from Long Island and went to Fort Washington and
from there to White Plains and was in the battle at that place and it
was a sore battle, from there we marched to the North River and crossed
over into the State of New Jersey and was followed by the British until
we arrived at Trenton that when he got to New Brunswick he was
discharged from the Army but immediatley volunteered and entered the
service again - That Gen. Washington led the Army from the White Plains
to Trenton and when we got to Trenton Gen'l Washington walked the
streeets all night and it was said and believed at the time that he
wept, the next morning after we arrived there, the Army crossed over the
Delaware River into Pennsylvania and laid there until the night of the
26th of December and then crossed over at Coryell's Ferry and went down
to Trenton and there took the Hessians, that the night after New Years,
the Army crossed over the Delaware again at Bordentown or Bollentown and
marched up to Trenton again, and General Washington went in the night on
to Mill Hill and placed in the street cannon to prevent the British from
crossing over, and Gen'l. Washington fired upon them in the morning as
they attempted to cross, and continued to fire upon them the whole day
and prevented their crossing and killed many of them.
That when night came on Gen'l. Washington ordered fires to be built
up where they lay, and marched away from there about eight miles further
up the Creek and crossed over and marched into Princeton and had a
skirmish there, and marched to Rocky Hill, and there the main of the
Army remained through the winter, and in the Spring this Depossonent(?)
returned home, and after remaining at home about one week he was drafted
again in the Militia of Princeton and went out into the service under
one Captain John Mott, and kept guard down about Philadelphia and other
places along the Delaware River on Jersey side of the River, and that he
joined the main Army a short time before the battle at Monmouth, that
the first attack was made upon the British by the Regiment he was in,
which was place upon the right wing, Gen'ls. Washington, Green, Putman,
and Lee were present at the battle.
That he has thought more on the subject of late of what took place,
and the probable length of time he was out and in actual service during
the Revolutionary War, and is of opinion and verily believes that he
must have been and was out in actual service of the United States as
much as two years and he believes more.
That he has no documentary evidence of his service, that he knows
of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his
service, except Captain Peter Gordon who he served under who was living
one year ago last Fall in the village of Geneva in the County of Ontario
in the State of New York.
That he has procured the Deposition of the said Captain Peter
Gordon which is here unto annexed.
That he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or
annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the
pension roll of any State.
That he was born in the year 1757 in Hunterdon County in the State
of New Jersey.
That he has a Record of his age in his Bible at home taken from his
Father's Bible.
That he was called into service in the manner set forth above in
this Declaration.
That he knew Gen'ls. Washington, Green, Putman, and Lee.
That he received a discharge from Captain Gordon at New Brunswick
and does not know what has become of it.
That he never received a commission always served as a private in
the United States Service.
That he is aquainted with Silvanus Arnold, Postmaster at Tyrone
Steuben Co. New York. Gen'l. William Kirnan, Rev'd. Van Rensellaer Wall
of the Town of Jersey in Steuben Co. N. Y., Rev'd. Edward W. Martin of
Starkey, Deacon Ja-arus Ellis of Tyrone who can testify to his character
for truth and veracity and their belief of his service as a soldier of
the Revolution. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

This 'new' Bible I have may have a 1832 printing date, but a sales slip enclosed states that it was purchased in the 1880's for 5 dollars paid in installment of $1 each. I believe that this is the Bible of Henry Carpenter Jr. (Hope's grandson)and Azuba Ostrander.
