Announcing the death of my uncle Dr. Robert Carpenter at the age of 93 (July 10, 1930 – December 19, 2023)

Robert Carpenter descended from the two William Carpenters who came to America in the 1630's.  The ones found in Groups 2 and 3  of the Carpenter Y-DNA Project.  Uncle Bob was part of the YDNA Project # 120641.

His Family Carpenter trail is from:
William (of Providence) > Joseph (married to Hannah Carpenter daughter of William of Rehoboth) > William (b 1666) > Benedict (b. 1717) > James Carpenter (1754) > Enoch ( 1786) > David Lane Carpenter (1824) > James E Carpenter (b. 1852), > Harry Lane Carpenter > Robert Lake Carpenter 1930)

Dr. Robert L. Carpenter, PhD
July 10, 1930 - December 19, 2023
Robert was the founder of Adult Mental Health Services in the Bell Therapy Programs that began in 1975. With the deinstitutionalization of the mental health facilities in 1970, Dr. Carpenter developed locally, the Scandinavian principle of normalization, integrating mental health patients into the general community. The program was given national and congressional recognition as being a prototype for all such programs as cited in the Congressional Archives.
His advocacy for human rights began through his mother who worked hard to attain better housing and educational facilities for immigrants in Minnesota
During his first year at Hamline University in the 1949-1950 school year, he accompanied African American students to restaurants to attain full service and integration in St. Paul.
Dr. Carpenter was instrumental in changing the Federal Food Stamp Program to qualify recipients receiving benefits as “family.” He was also an advocate for and instrumental in developing benefits for mental health issues in employment and personnel policies.
Dr. Carpenter was the youngest of six siblings whose parents were Harry Lane Carpenter and birth mother Mable Remington. He was raised by his step-mother, Sarah Lindeman, after his birth mother’s death in 1935.
Preceded in death by siblings Dorothy, Cleron (Ruth), Donald, Kenneth and identical twin brother, William (Eugenie) Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by his nieces, Jean Penner, Nancy Sherman and Susan St. John.

Mary Evelyn Harlow

Mary Evelyn Harlow Carpenter, wife of Joseph H. Carpenter, 3rd great
grandson of Joseph (14) Carpenter, wrote The Carpenters of Fort Carpenter,
1746- 1949 (privately published at Covington, VA, cl949).
It is a valuable work on one line of descent from Joseph the pioneer
but virtually impossible to obtain. The author (Paul Mowrey) was fortunate
enough to borrow Fort Carpenter's only copy for xeroxing during a 1989
visitation and return the original at his convenience by insured parcel post.
