ALEXANDER CARPENTER, eldest son of Ashman and Mary (Boyle) Carpenter came to Canada and petitioned for land in 1789 and his petition states that, on a production of a certificate for good behavour, he was recommended for 200 acres of land. It is likely that he received a Crown Deed for land in Saltfleet township as in 1808 he was located on Lot 11 Concession I, Saltfleet.

John,
Thank you for the prompt reply and Gershom’s family tree. Charles intrigued me as he had received a war pension in 1875. I have a muster of about 700 men in the 5th Lincoln Militia but know that it is incomplete because documents have been lost. I have some material on the 4th Lincoln Militia where I found Charles and some other Carpenter men:
Private Ashman Carpenter (1795-1818)
He was born in Stamford Twp. to Alexander Carpenter and Elizabeth Smith (Pati). He served July 24 to Aug. 24, 1812 (4L1). Ashman made a land claim after the war as a member of a flank company (ILC). He died in Stamford Twp. (Pati).
Private Charles Carpenter (1796-)
...
Capt. William Carpenter
...
These men are a lower priority for me, but I would like to know more about them. Please let me know if you want any of my sources. I have tagged the Carpenter bios with your email address so that I can update you if I learn more.

2085. Ashman "Ashmon" Carpenter
Temporary connection - unknown father! Logically it fits, but no proof.
COMMENT: We have Ashman Carpenter (1762-1839) confused with Ashman Carpenter (1806-1869). They are not father and son, but uncle & nephew.NAME:
Ashmon or AshmanBIRTH:
Likely in New Jersey, but really unknown.
Birth date likely calculated from original gravemarker showing Age 76 years, 9 months and 10 days at death or about 26 Dec 1762.MILITARY:
Per William "Bill" Carpenter: ... the Ashman Carpenter who served in the Morris County Militia appears to be the one who is died in Hardyston, Sussex County, NJ in 1839.
Per grave image, He served in Captain Ward's Company, Morris County, NJ Militia during the Revolutionary War.
The 1911 SAR application for Ford Ashman is unsupported. The DAR applications specify Ashman Carpenter of Hardyston and run through a female line of descent, so they may well be valid.

Hardyston
The North Hardyston Cemetery is the final resting place of seven Revolutionary War veterans. But, the cemetery administrators only know the whereabouts of six of those soldiers. Over time, many of the cemeterys headstones and grave markers have fallen over and been buried or overgrown by foliage. On top of that, the records for the older section of the graveyard were lost in a fire five years ago essentially erasing all traces of this deceased soldier as well as a great many other remains.
But the Chinkchewunska chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), out of Wantage, is taking steps to change that.
...
An ongoing mission This past Friday isnt the first time the DAR have been digging in the North Hardyston Cemetery, either. When they started the project last spring, there were two missing Revolutionary War veterans the first of whom, Ashman Carpenter, was uncovered on their first visit. The fallen headstone was buried under three to four inches of dirt and sod, but is now fully displayed along with a brand new marker courtesy of the Veterans Society. The next of kin was pretty excited, Ziccardi said.

John,
I found your posts in the Carpenter forum at ancestry.com. I am interested in the family history of Gershom and James Carpenter, the sons of Ashman Carpenter who died in 1789 in the Niagara area. I am writing veteran biographies for the men who served in the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. I have the following bios:
Capt. Gershom Carpenter (1765-1845) @
He was born in Hopewell, New Jersey to Ashman Hope Carpenter and Mary Catherine Boyle. He married Sarah Pettit (1770-1847), the daughter of Charles Pettit and Mary Smith (Pati). In 1786, he arrived in Saltfleet Twp. (SCP). In 1794, he made a land petition. Since 1792, he had been in possession of Lot 7, Con. 2 and 3, Seventh Twp. and had made improvements on that land. On August 16, 1794, the petition was granted (U706). On October 1, 1798, John and Girsham Carpenter made a land petition as residents of Lincoln Co. In 1788, they arrived in the province with their father, Ashman Carpenter, who soon after became ill and unable to care for his family. But . In 1802, Gershom and John Carpenter received Lot 7, Con. 1 and 2 and Lots 16 and 17, Con. 2 in Saltfleet Twp. (GDM pg. 29). In 1804 he served in the 1st West Lincoln as an ensign (GDM pg. 22). He was stationed at Burlington Heights from September 17 to October 24, 1813 (5L168)(5L171)(5LGC1309). On September 26, 1815, he made a war claim, as a yeoman of Saltfleet Twp., for an ox which was impressed and died while in service on August 24, 1814. John Lewis of Grimsby certified the claim. In 1824, he resubmitted his war claim as a resident of Saltfleet Twp. (WC1300). He died in Grimsby (Pati).
Sgt. James Carpenter (1779-1813) @
...I have indices to the online documents for the land petitions, militia service, and war claims. Patriot sources have not always been reliable and would like to confirm that information. I would also like to know both men’s birth dates, Sophia’s parentage, and further details on both men’s death and burial places. Both men appeared to have lived in Saltfleet Twp. during the war.
I have bios and sources for other men who lived in the area from Oakville to Hamilton, Ontario during the war.

Suggestions made
Information of Leslie Jay Carpenter (b. 1925) of Seattle Washington (4-1990),
Submitted by Donald W. Carpenter (born 28 Apr. 1943) of Ontario, Canada. Children order uncertain.Jerry Eugene Donovan (b. 1954) of Loveland, CO supplied updates to this family from a record he copied in March of 1997 that is called "History of the Carpenter Family as related by the late Joseph James Carpenter." This record was prepared by his daughter Nellie Carpenter-Patterson and recopied by James Webster Carpenter at Gary, Ind., another descendant in the Family Tree on June 26, 1912.
This record indicates that Joseph James and his wife lived in New Jersey until 1816 when they moved to Ontario (Canada West), Canada. All the family went with him except "brother Samuel" and "Sister Nancy at that time being married . . ." "My parents lived in Canada 8 years. They moved to Rochester, NY where my mother died in April 1824. My father never remarried again, lived with brother Samuel and others of his children until his death at
the home of his youngest John A. in Canada in 1851."
"Children all born in New Jersey except Elizabeth, Lydia and John."CHILD: Nancy listed in one record but not in another.
CHILD: Charles listed in one record but not in another. May be in wrong family.UPDATE: Submitted by Eric Carlson 18 May 2002.
Joseph Carpenter may have had Loyalist ties in that he and Margaret Hope moved to Ontario, Canada, in 1816 and stayed there for eight years; theythen moved to Rochester, New York, where Margaret Hope died in 1824. Joseph Carpenter was born about 1760 probably in Sussex County, New Jersey, but died in Ontario, Canada, about 1851 in the home of his son, Samuel Carpenter. They had 14 children in all who were born in New Jersey or Ontario, Canada.
-- R. Robert Mutrie Carpenter GenealogyJoseph lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania then New York. He came with his wife to Upper Canada in 1816 and settled at Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth Co. Some of Joseph's children settled at Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co. and he joined them late in life.
The obitiuary of Joseph Carpenter appeared in the Christian Guardiannewspaper issue of 25 Jun 1851: "Joseph Carpenter was born in March,1769, in Essex County, N.J., got married in 1794 and joined thePresbyterian Church soon after that. In 1816, he came to Canada. He was converted at 50-Mile Creek in 1832, and joined the Methodist Church. His death occurred at Townsend township, May 9, 1851."

This is the story of the joys, the tragedies, the triumphs, and the failures of a United Empire Loyalist family – the story of the John Moore; primary source being Langsford Robinson's "History of the Moore Family of Grimsby". John Moore was the son of Edward Moore and Mary Nelles. Edward Moore was born in N. Ireland and came to the New World circa 1720s. His father Denis Moore was one of the apprentices who held the Bridge at Derry until King William of Orange came to break the siege at Londonderry, defeating the French forces of James the Second.
John Moore was born in New Jersey in 1738 and married Dinah Pettit, born in 1746, of Elizabeth, New Jersey by whom he had 10 children. He owned land on Jenny Jump Mountain and according to "Pioneer Families of Northwestern New Jersey" there were three lots there – John Moore's lot, Samuel Green's lot, and Edward Oatley's lot." John was a "hatter" by trade, manufacturing and selling felt hats wholesale. His innovative and entrepreneurial spirit is revealed by his use of barges which conveyed his product by canal to stores and other territories. They lived in a large stone house, in an area which was the center of Revolutionary activity in 1776 - 1777 and 1779 – 1780. General Washington encamped there and many clashes caused a number of houses to be burned to the ground. "Pathway of the Moores" by Angela Files, gives greater detail of these war-torn days.
During the outbreak of the American War of Independence, they were living in Sussex, New Jersey and John Moore and family suffered intensely.
From his petition to John Graves Simcoe, Esquire, Lieutenant Governor and Commander-in-Chief over the Province of Upper Canada (1795). " I gave great assistance in sending into the British Lines Recruits for His Majesty's New Raised Corps; Also sent 14 men into Niagara, at great expense and trouble, with Allan McDaniel who was then on the frontier; and at that time exercised valuable and numerous family; and that on account of his attachment to the British Constitution he became suspect, lost business and suffered fines and imprisonment….. besides supporting for a considerable time a Company of 36 men, which by his exertions, the greater part of them arrived safely in New York: Was also deprived of comfortable subsistence for himself and Family.
In other words, he was actively involved in defending British rights by hiding British supporters and sending troops to front-line battles. In addition, he was a member of the New Jersey Colonial Guards and later joined Butlers Rangers where he served with great bravery and leadership [communications with Gavin Watt raises the question of whether he actually joined Butler's Ranger - see query below].
You will have heard of the sufferings of those imprisoned at Log Gaol – for that was where John Moore was held. The Moore family left for Canada in company with his cousin, Robert Land. They traveled north, through the Mohawk Valley: however, John Moore decided to stop at the Mill Seat Tract and it was from there that they hired a bateau to convey the family and goods to Niagara. As Langsford Robinson recounts in "History of the Moore Family of Grimsby", "the family and part chattels were conveyed by water to Niagara …. But when Captain Moore returned he found not only his wagons, cattle, and goods gone, but the slaves as well." Having stayed in Niagara for a while, the Moore family made the trek to Grimsby, settling near the lakeshore.
C.M. Nelles in his book "Niagara", vol 2, says that Robert Nelles, who later married Elizabeth Moore, " left the road to follow a track through the pines and soon he came to their camp. It was much like his own, a lean-to with possessions stacked around it under the trees beside a widening in the creek.." Then the Year of Great Want struck – famine hit the area. John Moore's signature is amongst those who petitioned Col. Hunter at Niagara, pleading for food, seed, pigs, etc. in order to survive the extreme life-threatening circumstances in which they found themselves.
"Annals of the Forty" tell us that John was a founding member of the First Township Council in Canada, in 1790, meeting at John Green's house. Back in New Jersey "continental congress had authorized the formation of local government" in 1776. Is it possible that John Moore had been involved in setting up a local government in his community in New Jersey? John was Clerk of Town Council for three years and also 1792 joint overseer of the roads. In 1793 he was Warden of the Town, which office he held until 1796. His name headed "the subscription list for the building of a plank church in 1800." – St Andrews Episcopal Church. John Moore died in 1803 and was buried "at the lake on the west side of the creek", then later interred in St Andrews Churchyard.
Although unable to make his previous enterprise of hat-making profitable, and finding himself "unsuited to farming" John still helped make a place in the history of Canada. Grimsby was the first Municipal Council in April 1790 and was followed in May 1790 by the Council at Sidney, then Adolphustown two years later in March 1792. Mabel Burkholder stated," we may safely assume that Grimsby Township was the cradle of Municipal Government in Ontario."
Moore Family History notes that John Moore was made Captain when in Butlers Rangers. A "Capt. Caldwell, who was 2nd I.C. to Col Butler contacted him (John Moore) and brought him into Butlers Rangers." Langsford Robinson also states that "Information confirming this was obtained from a book owned by W.A. Hamilton of this city (Hamilton, On.) of James St. S., which gives lists of many officers as they changed from time to time. We find Capt. Moore's name in later lists." In 1914 Langsford Robinson met a Col. Caldwell, who was chief of Staff at Ottawa at that time, who confirmed that the John Moore buried at Grimsby was definitely the Capt. Moore who distinguished himself in Butler's Rangers." That said, these are secondary sources.
GRIMSBY EPISCOPAL CHURCH Among the oldest interments are"In memory of John Moore, died May 16th, 1803, aged 64, and Dinah his wife, died Nov. 9th, 1804, aged 68."
John was granted land in Grimsby Twsp. Lots A & B in Grimsby Gore, Lot I Con 1 & II Grimsby Twp., 300a Con VII Grimsby, 400a in Rainham.
"At the beginning of the War of the Revolution John Moore promptly joined the Colonial Guards of New Jersey and was made a junior officer. When the Corps of New Jersey turned its coat, John stuck to the Red tunic of his King and fought on the side of the British until the end of the war. In 1787 John, with other loyalists, began the long trek to Canada. John was granted land in Grimsby township Lots A. -B. in Grimsby Gore--Lot 1, Concs. I and II, Grimsby township--300 acres in 7th Concession, Grimsby township, and 400 acres in Platinum. In New Jersey, John engaged in the manufacture of felt hats-one of the first industries of its kind on this continent. Later when he came to The Forty and found farming unsuited to his temperament, he resumed hat making. He opened a shop in the settlement. There, we are told, he made little money as the turnover was too limited. John Moore was named the first Clerk in the Grimsby Township Council in 1790, the record of Municipal Government for Ontario. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge formed in Grimsby in 1799. And he was presumably a member of the Episcopal Church, as his name heads the subscription list for the building of the plank church in 1800.

Samuel came to Saltfleet Twp. in 1787. He was married several times.
Submitted by Donald W. Carpenter (born 28 Apr. 1943) of Ontario,
Canada.
This Samuel is believed to be the Samuel Carpenter who is mentioned in the
"Death Notices from Christian Guardian" 1836-1850, Pages 57-58 which reads:
"Carpenter, Samuel was born in Sussex Co., N.J., c. 1776, and emigrated to
Canada West, settling in Saltfleet Twp. in 1787. In about 1801 he married
Mary Templer of Grimsby who die in 1838. In 1839, he married Mrs. Simonds of
Flamboro West. He died, Sept. 12, 1845; survived by his wife and family. -
Dec. 17, 1845, p. 33,0."In one record he has a daughter Sally who married a McMullen.
This may be a nick name for Martha, Mercy or Sarah. But to play it safe, she
is listed as a daughter.BOOK:

John,
Thank you for the prompt reply and Gershom’s family tree. Charles intrigued me as he had received a war pension in 1875. I have a muster of about 700 men in the 5th Lincoln Militia but know that it is incomplete because documents have been lost. I have some material on the 4th Lincoln Militia where I found Charles and some other Carpenter men:
Private Ashman Carpenter (1795-1818)
...
Private Charles Carpenter (1796-)
...
Capt. William Carpenter
In 1804 he served as a captain in the 2nd Regiment of the West Riding of Lincoln County (GDM pg. 23). He served in the 4th Lincoln (OBF pg. 264). He served July 4 to 28, 1814 (4L1405)(4L1407).
These men are a lower priority for me, but I would like to know more about them. Please let me know if you want any of my sources. I have tagged the Carpenter bios with your email address so that I can update you if I learn more.
Fred
MORE:
The 4th Lincoln Militia was recruited from Clinton, Grimsby, Caistor, and Gainsborough Twp. It looks like Capt. William Carpenter was the brother of Capt. Gershom Carpenter of the 5th Lincoln Militia:
Capt. William Carpenter (c1761-) @
About 1761, William Carpenter was born in Hopewell, New Jersey to Ashman Carpenter and Mary Boyle. About 1786, he married Martha Smith, the daughter of Silas and Esther Smith. In 1799 he had a land grant in Grimsby Twp. (Car). In 1804 he served as a captain in the 2nd Regiment of the West Riding of Lincoln County (GDM pg. 23). He served in the 4th Lincoln (OBF pg. 264). He served July 4 to 28, 1814 (4L1405)(4L1407). He died in Winona (Car).
I have some War of 1812 indices. Gershom was the only one to make a war claim after the war. The Carpenter name was not recorded in my collection of militia historical notes. There should however be additional payroll records for the Carpenter men in the 4th Lincoln payroll documents which are online. I suspect that Capt. William Carpenter was present at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane on July 25 1814. I have not looked at most of these documents but estimate it would take one to two hours with high speed internet to review these documents. Please let me know if you want directions to these payrolls.

Ashman and Mary’s son William married Martha Smith of New Jersey, in 1805 in Saltfleet, Upper Canada. Then it was likely known as The Fifty. Their son Alexander would marry Anna Young Pettit in 1835 in Saltfleet. Their daughter Augusta would marry George Franklin Lewis in 1858 in Wentworth, Canada West. Their daughter Helen would marry Joseph Jardine in 1882 and their daughter Irene Augusta would marry John Wilkie Lawrason in Dundas, Ontario in 1908. My George Rancier Coon was born 13 March 1799 in Lincoln County,
Ontario. He died 10 March 1872 in Oxford County Ontario. Married 3 April
1822 to Deborah Phoebe Smith..born 8 February 1805 and died 6 June 1883.
They are buried in Quaker Street Friends Cemetery in Norwich. They were
parents of five children.. Elizabeth S.; Stephen; Mary; Phoebe; and
George Rancier II.
I have found George Rancier I parents listed in two different
places...the first is at the Family History Center and they have John
Stephen Coon...b 1762 NJ and Phoebe Carpenter. The other was just in
some old writings and I am not sure who did them...they have John S.
Coon and Phebe Carpenter.Do know from Grandfather that the Coon family
was United Empire Loyalist. Have found on the 1861 census that George
Rancier Coon I states his religion as Quaker.BURIAL:

Recently I came across your answer to a question from Faye Hood regarding
Phoebe/Phebe (Have found it spelled both ways) Carpenter's husband Stephen
Coon. Have also found that his first name may have been John.
According to information I have found, Ashman Carpenter and family migrated to
Upper Canada as Loyalists in 1783. Soon after their arrival he became ill and
died in 1785 in Niagara, Lincoln Co., Ontario. Since Phoebe M. Carpenter was
born in 1776, she had to have been born in Sussex County, New Jersey and not in
Saltfleet or Toronto as some records show. My information comes from several
sources: A History of the Coon Family by Stephen Burnell Coon (1862-1936),
several different volumes of "The Annals of the Forty" published by the Grimsby
Historical Society, "The Carpenter and Coon Families" excerpts received from
the Hamilton Genealogical Association and from family information.
My father carried the "Carpenter" name as a middle name. John Stephen and
Phoebe had 6 children, the 6th, Stephen, was born a few months after his death
from injuries suffered when a tree fell on him while he was clearing his
property, Lot 4 Concession #5, Clinton Township, Lincoln Co., Ontario. This is
the location of the births of all his children. My records are as follows:

Suggested bio:
Joseph reportedly died at age 46 years, 11 months and 28 days and this calculates a birth about 12 Sep 1800. BUT we have a conflict with birth dates, including estimated birth dates of two brothers.
George born 13 Mar 1799 then a calculated birth date of 10 Oct 1799 for Amasa (despite census indicating a 1-2 year age difference) and now Joseph being born on 12 Sep 1800 which is in conflict with a census birth year of about Oct 1800 for Amasa.
Sadly Joseph died before the 1851 Census and their is no conformation of birth year.
Is it possible that Amasa & Joseph were twins? Maybe, but less likely. It is assumed that the year estimate for Joseph on marker is 1-2 years off.

John,
I found your posts in the Carpenter forum at ancestry.com. I am interested in the family history of Gershom and James Carpenter, the sons of Ashman Carpenter who died in 1789 in the Niagara area. I am writing veteran biographies for the men who served in the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. I have the following bios:
Capt. Gershom Carpenter (1765-1845) @
...
Sgt. James Carpenter (1779-1813) @
He was born in Grimsby to Ashman Hope Carpenter and Mary Catherine Boyle (Pati). On June 29, 1802, he made a land petition as a resident of Saltfleet Twp. He was 21 years old and had arrived in the province with his father and family at least twelve years ago. On August 3, 1804, the petition was dismissed as James had not appeared before the board (U708). In 1804 he married Sophia Agusta Simons (Pati). On December 23, 1811, he made a second land petition as a yeoman of Saltfleet Twp. He had resided in the province for about 23 years. It was certified in 1804 that his father was deceased and that he had the care of his elderly mother. The petition was recommended (U709). On January 26, 1813, he died of an illness. His widow, Sophia, received a militia pension (OTW)(WP2).
I have indices to the online documents for the land petitions, militia service, and war claims. Pati’s sources have not always been reliable and would like to confirm that information.
