2095. Benjamin Carpenter

CAUTION:
Ancestry issue in that 3 descendants have Y-DNA tested and are part of Group 12 of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.  We are not sure if this is a NPE (Non-Paternal Event = a formal or informal adoption within a lineage) or bad genealogy.  For now we challenge the parents John Carpenter and Mary Hart.

NOTE: MAJOR CORRECTION - See page 906 (insert) and 907 in the Carpenter Memorial.
Family number 49 - corrected to as listed.

Number 325 in The Carpenter Memorial on page 86.
Family number 1 on page 160 (#145) and number 2 on page 824 (#1831).
Marriage number 3 not in CM. See Corrections on page 906 & 907.

Pennsylvania Marriages before 1790: Two marriages given.
1768, June 16. Carpenter, Benjamin and Grace Morgan
1772, Aug. 10. Carpenter, Benjamin and Mary Morgan

Benjamin Carpenter was born near Woodbury, Gloucester, NJ just south and across the Delaware river from Philadelphia, PA. After the close of the Revolutionary War, he moved to Fauquier, VA (NOTE: NEVER PART OF , now W.Virginia), where his first and second (NOTE: not 2nd & 3rd) wives died. In 1797 he removed to Harrison county, VA (now WV). In 1804 to what is now Lawrence County, OH where he died in 1809.

NOTE: Fauquier, VA was never part of WV. There were two basic ways to get to Fauquier County from the Delaware River area between Philadelphia and Gloucester County, NJ.
1) By ship down the Delaware River to Delaware Bay then out to the Atlantic Ocean and back through Chesapeake Bay and up the Rappahannock River to a few miles southeast of Front Royal, Warren County, Virginia, near the single point where Warren, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties come together. Then east into Fauquier County. This or something similar is most likely.
2) By land from Philadelphia west over the Philadelphia Wagon Road toward Washington, DC then southwest to the Old Northwestern Turnpike then east into Loudoun County then south into Fauquier County.

To go to Harrison County, WV from Fauquier County is by land. North into Loudoun County then west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike over the Shenandoah Mountains until you get to Harrison County then part of VA.
To go to Lawrence County, OH from Harrison County you head west on the Old Northwestern Turnpike until you get to the Ohio River. Then use the river to float to Lawrence County. Note, there was also a trail that went inland (west of the river into Ohio) then south.

5048. Sarah Mary Carpenter

Number 8953 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 824.

5052. Randall Carpenter

Number 8957 in the Carpenter Memorial.  See page 824.
Not in the computer record.

Elizabeth McFarland Hughes

McFarland was the name of her first husband.

5056. Linny Carpenter

Number 8960 in the Carpenter Memorial.  See page 824.
She died in her 13th year in Ohio per the CM.  Another record indicates
she was a stillborn death.  Possibly 2 Linny children.

2097. John Carpenter

MARRIAGE:
He did not marry Mary Eldridge on  6 Dec 1784. This has been disproved. See RIN 131769 who married Mary Eldridge.

MARRIAGE:
If he did not marry Mary, then who did he marry and where did he go after Philadelphia? Did he go to present day WV? More research needed.
Some place on line show he married a Mary Schumacher abt 1780 in Philadephia. But the John Carpenter she married died at age 21. So that is discounted.

CHILDREN:
Where did these DMY dates come from? What are there source?  Is it a family bible?
They are first seen in the old Ancestral File (AF) and no one has expanded upon them since.

AF:
Several submissions from 1989, 1991 then PRF there after. Then resubmitted to the updated AF in 2011.

2098. Joseph Carpenter

Number 326 in the Carpenter Memorial.  See page 86 and 906.
He is probably the father of Samuel H. Carpenter of Philadelphia. - This statement has been proved wrong.

Did he move to Greenwich, Warren, New Jersey?

Other than what is in the CM, nothing really found. Likely misidentified?

5066. Samuel H. Carpenter

This is not the Samuel H. Carpenter of Philadelphia. But it is left here for reference.

2102. John Carpenter

STORY:
The following story has been DISPROVED by Y-DNA testing via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - Group 3. Group 3 is an English line and not an Irish line.
There were ... four brothers [who] came from Ireland and settled in New York.  Two came to WV, John and David, and one stayed in Ohio (which would explain the migration to Ohio for a time) and one remained in New York.  The story is similar to what her grandfather Burse told her older sister.  In this version, three brothers had come from Ireland during one of the famines.  The three brothers were John,  Ashman and David Carpenter.  John went to Fort Pitt and then settled in Virginia, now WV.  Ashman reputedly went to North Carolina and Patty was unsure about David. - Yet another version has David to PA.

Information prepared by Terry L. Carpenter of Memphis, Tennessee.  See C-3, #1 in the files of Janet Gesas Hornick, Englewood.
NOTE: This author stated that further research was needed to confirm relationships.

On 29 July 2005 Richard wrote:  "The Cds are very valuable tools for connecting to William of Reho and His son Captain John Carpenter. I was able to trace the the line of Johns, from Captain John back, but the link ended when one of his descendants failed to have a John. However I did find something notable that is listed. One of Captain John Carpeter's (b.1626) sons was Hope Carpenter)b.1660. His wife was Mary Ashman. They had a son named Ashmond Carpenter( along with some other descendants of this line named Ashman. This is probably where one would find the link between our Ashman Carpenter and William of Rehoboth Carpenter. Have you found any info on Ashman Carpenter's parents other than the ones that say John and Nancy. They could still possibly be the parents, but it is not John>John>John untill Captain John Carpenter. It would have to be from Hope Carpenter, as the Name Ashman Carpenter started poppingup after their marriage. I am going to leave the Captain John Carpenter and his ancestors, but I am going to leave the middle blank, as their is a connection. Let me know what you think."
COMMENT:
"The Hope/Ashman line is actually mainly from New Jersey. They were also loyalists to the crown in the rev war, meaning they migrated to Ontario." JRC adds yes they are related genetically!

Jan wrote back:  "I have a couple of lines where I have done as you mentioned, keeping the "way back" ancestors in my PAF database, and unlinking for a generation or more until further data appears.  The Ashman name has always interested me. I have seen that Hope Carpenter hypothesis before. Maybe there is some credance to it, but I would want more firm data."

COMPARE:

Family on page 159 (#143)

Samuel went to North Carolina about 1774 and from there to Barron county, KY
in 1800 where he died in 1811.
A deed is recorded at Cleveland, NC dated 8 Oct 1811 from L___ Short and
Catherine Carpenter, executors of the estate of Samuel Carpenter, deceased of
the county of Barron, State of Kentucky, to Joseph Carpenter for 500 acres of
land.

Hunterdon county until 1838 when Hopewell became part of Mercer county.

NOTE: Read brother's notes!

Samuel moved to Barren County, Kentucky where he became quite prominent politically and economically. Some of his descendants traveled to central Missouri with so many other Carpenters and family members. Per Robert C. Carpenter.

2104. Joseph Carpenter

NAME:
Likely born a Zimmerman and later used Carpenter.

NOTE:
Noted in the book "Carpenters A Plenty" by Robert C. Carpenter. See page 972.

A descendant of this Joseph Carpenter-13138 (Horace) was Y-DNA tested via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project and found to match genetically with Group 5, a Zimmerman line from Switzerland.  And not Group 3 of the Rehoboth, MA line as cited in the Carpenter Memorial (CM). This Joseph has been removed as a son of Hezekiah Carpenter-12823 from the CM.  ID (RINs) numbers after the surname reflect assigned numbers in the main Carpenter Cousins database.

There had been a concern that the Joseph in the CM and the genealogical descendants assigned were done in error. This has been confirmed and this is the reason for this note. May 2015 JRC

The following is the information cited in the CM and left for reference. The second paragraph may reflect the correct Joseph.

John and all,
I am hoping that a male member of this family will have their DNA tested.
The lineage of this Joseph back to William Carpenter of English descent has
been contested. Joseph Zimmerman, whose brother was Samuel, resided in
upper Cleveland County, NC. They married Eaker sisters. All were German.
Joseph and Samuel are not direct descendants of Hans Zimmerman of Group 5
but rather of a relative from Pennsylvania. Their mother, Margaret Caquelin
(variously spelled) named them in her will. She married a Zimmerman first
and then a Caquelin. Samuel moved to Kentucky and a number of Joseph's
descendants moved to Tennessee. Others remained in North Carolina. Bob and
I have been unable to get a descendant of Joseph or Samuel to have their DNA
tested to prove once and for all that they belong to Group 5.
I am hopeful that this contact may motivate a member of the family to do so.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPECULATION:  Unfounded per Robert Carpenter - 3 May 2015
Is Joseph C-13138 a half sibling of Sarah Salome Carpenter-112683 who married a David Klein (Cline) and who is buried in the same cemetery? SSC-112683 has Jacob Zimmerman-112652 and Catherine Ramsaur-112653 as parents. Suspicion of a earlier marriage of JZ-112652 to Margaret _______ is unfounded.

PARENT:
Their mother (of brothers Joseph & Samuel), Margaret Caquelin (variously spelled) named them in her
1798 will. She married a Zimmerman first and then a Caquelin.

Subject: Re: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - 386630 lineage update - Group 5 unattached
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
At long last the lineage is settled. The first person in North Carolina to suggest that Joseph and Samuel, brothers who married Eaker sisters, were not English as some had supposed was Bonnie Mauney Summers. It was Lorena Eaker in her Eaker history, who located the German signature of Joseph and provided other proof to indicate that Joseph and Samuel were in fact Zimmermans. When I printed my book, Carpenters A Plenty, I stated as such and offered the proof that Lorena and I had located in our research. Yet, some simply refused "to believe" this lineage. I always say when one writes a book, an article, or creates a written account, that it will be believed forever!
It was clear to me that DNA would prove the lineage once and for all, and am thankful that Horace was motivated to be tested. Whoever encouraged him, I offer my thanks.
There is still some mystery with this family. We do not have the name of the father of Joseph, Samuel and Salome who married John Stucky/Stucki and resided in I think Ohio. All three siblings came to North Carolina and owned land in the Knob Creek area.
On Feb 21, 1798, "Margaret Gacklin" of Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County, PA wrote her will in which she devised to "my three children . . . Sons Joseph Zimmerman & Samuel Zimmerman and Daughter Salome Stucky". She also mentioned that son in law John Stucky was executor.
My Pennsylvania research indicates that Elizabeth (uncertain maiden name) married a Zimmerman and then married Dietrich (Didie) Caquelin (Gockley) around 1772. No trace of her first husband has been located. I believe that he must have been one of the passengers or son of a passenger of the pink Plaisance which arrived 1732. The Caquelin family resided in Alsace among the Zimmermans and other Swiss Amish, who had moved there. The surname is variously spelled, may have a French origin, but in the parish records I perused they appeared to speak German and attended German Protestant churches. Quite a number of the surname moved to America. Dietrich arrived in 1736 on the Princess Augusta with the Deppens, Ruchtis, and other Swiss who had lived in Alsace. I say all of this for the benefit of our Zimmerman research group.
Samuel moved to Barren County, Kentucky where he became quite prominent politically and economically. Some of his descendants traveled to central Missouri with so many other Carpenters and family members.
Bringing these families together in our Group 5 is a wonderful accomplishment. Thanks to everyone who assisted with this process!
Robert Carpenter

2105. Joseph Carpenter

Number 322 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 86
Family on page 159 (#144)

He moved from Hopewell to Bucks county, PA and after the death of his father,
to North Carolina in 1775 and located in Irvon: afterwards to Ruthford (now
Cleveland county).  They were both buried at Knob Creek, Cleveland county, NC.
-------------
The last paragraph above is likely correct for the Group 5 Joseph Carpenter.

NOTE:
A descendant of Joseph Carpenter-13138 was Y-DNA tested via the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project and found to match genetically with Group 5, a Zimmerman line for Switzerland.  And not Group 3 of the Rehoboth, MA line. That Joseph has been removed as a son of Hezekiah Carpenter-12823.  ID (RINs) numbers after the surname reflect assigned numbers in the main Carpenter Cousins database.

There had been a concern that the Joseph in the CM and the genealogical descendants assigned were done in error. This has been confirmed and this is the reason for this note. May 2015 JRC

At least I believe we narrowed down the father of John (124706); and, we do not need to chase another John as I believe the evidence clearly points to the fact that William was the father of John (124706) … I did not think the YDNA supported Samuel's William, but it did seem to be logical … interesting thought about Hezekiah; dates seem to match up … not sure how to go about proofing the linkage, but was not sure I would ever know who was the father of John (124706) …. get back with you in the coming months when I dig into this a little more

Larry, All,
Larry fantastic work! But ...
William Carpenter-5051 is Number 345 in the Carpenter Memorial. Page 88.
William Carpenter enlisted in the Orange Co. Militia 17 Mar 1759, age 20, born Goshen, a hatter by trade, served under Capt. Colvin Bradner. source - Muster Rolls of New York Porvincil Troops 1755-1764, by New York Historical Society, 1892, p. 156-157.
He has no family listed in the Carpenter Memorial.
His ancestry is ...
William Carpenter-5051
Samuel Carpenter-4963
Samuel Carpenter-3341
John Carpenter-587 <--------- He is the father of Hope Carpenter-12716
William Carpenter-584 (immigrant ancestor of Group 3) <----- Brother of Hope C-12716
IF both William C-5051 (b. abt 1668) and the descendants of Hope C-12716 (b. abt 1660/1662) ALL had the sub-group 3a mutations, then so should the rest of the children of their common father John C-587.
IF John C-587 (the father) had those markers then (again) the rest of his sons should have them also. Sadly, we do not see this.
His son John C-12521 has two descendants tested and they (FTDNA # 471861 and 602479) do not have the sub-group 3a mutations.
His son Samuel C-3341 has two descendants tested and they (FTDNA # 358096 and 233371) do not have the sub-group 3a mutations.
There are the very rare situations of latter sons having a mutation different from their father and other male siblings. But Hope C-12716 was the posited second male child of the family and William later as number four. This means it does not fit the very rare pattern at all.
The conclusion is that we have the wrong William Carpenter based on the Y-DNA markers of descendants.
But there is another maybe possibility ...
It is the unknown descendants of Hezekiah Carpenter-12772 (b. abt 1690/1693 NY) who is a son of Hope C-12716.
Number 84 in the Carpenter Memorial. Page 61
His family was dropped in the above record. Children listed for corrections
only. See Number 326a in the CM and family number 47. There are extensive
corrections on several pages in the errata (Additions and Corrections) section.
And further research indicates that Number 326a and more specifically the two children listed are incorrect also. Samuel and Joseph are listed as sons there. That Joseph had a descendant Y-DNA tested and was found to be part of the Group 5 line! Odds are so was his brother.
This simply means the children listed for Hezekiah C-12772 in the Carpenter Memorial are not his.
In my notes are a series of emails from Mike Morrissey from 2004. See the attached email.rtf
Mike provides a theory that Hezekiah C-12772 did indeed marry but died in Oct/Nov 1713 before his wife Abigail gave birth.
He shows that a Hezekiah Carpenter (Jr.), daughter of Abigail was baptized across the River from New Jersey on 15 Jun 1714 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Bensalem, Bensalem, Buck, Pennsylvania. ***
I have designated this Hezekiah (Jr.) as Hezekiah Carpenter-198784. If he was about age 25 when he married, this would be about 1739. Nothing found on him. Did he go South?
Of all the children and grandchildren of Hope C-12716, these two Hezekiahs (father and son) are real mysteries.
Could Hezekiah C-198784 (chr June 1714 PA) have been the father of William Carpenter (b. abt 1740ish and who died in 1807 in or near present day Fairmont, WV) cited by Larry? This would follow the Y-DNA bread trail, er Y-DNA mutational line.
Speculative Y-DNA line ...
Hope Carpenter-12716 (b. abt 1660/1662 NY – d. Jan/Mar 1712 NY)
Hezekiah Carpenter-12772 (b. abt 1693 NY – d. Oct/Nov 1713 NJ)
Hezekiah Carpenter-198784 (chr June 1714 PA – d. ? ? ) <--------- How can this be proved?
William Carpenter(no ID number yet) (b. abt 1740ish ? – d. 1807 WV
John Carpenter-124706 (b. abt 1765 NY – d. abt June/Jul 1826 WV)
Curious.

NOTE:  Fairmont is in present day Marion County, WV.

Subject: Follow-up on John (124706) ... a proposal for consideration to identify his lineage
ALL: I know it is summer and most of us have other things ongoing … but, after my Friday visit to the Marion County (WV) Genealogy room and, going over some previous research, I believe there is good evidence to consider that John's (124706) father is William Carpenter …
I have several electronic copies of deeds/tax/land/census/etc. records that I have accumulated over the last few months, I have attached a few of the key documents … and, my reasoning to suggest that William was the father of John (124706) and ... is is as follows:
1) In the late 1930s, President Roosevelt created the Work Progress Administration (WPA); WPA did more than simply build things … attached is a photocopy of the 1940s WPA Maple Grove Cemetery record which includes the name of William Carpenter who was born 1935 [1735], died 1807, and the record contains a note that he was in the Revolutionary War … William is grouped in the WPA record with the family of David (125340) and Sarah Carpenter … there is another record in the Marion County Genealogy room that indicates that David (125340) was buried with his grandfather William, this would infer that William was the father of John (124706) since John (124706) was the father of David (125340).
2) William's death in 1807 was two years after John (124706) purchased property on Prickett's Creek in what is now Fairmont WV … Maple Grove Cemetery was located within a few miles of John's (124706) homestead; approximately half way between the homestead and the center of town … attached is a photocopy of the 56 acres purchased by William Miller and John Carpenter in 1805.
3) ...
4) Family records always have indicated that John (124706) was born in Jamaica NY; this is the same location that William was born … Family records and census records indicate that the first two children of John (124706) and Ann was born in NY
5) It is well recognized that the uprising prior to and during the Rev. War forced people to relocate … many Carpenter's relocated to areas west of Long Island, i.e., NY and NJ … Orange County NY is an area that boarders NJ … Goshen is located in Orange County; thus, it is logical to believe that William (and, possibly his children were born in Jamaica, Long Island) relocated to Goshen to get away from the uprising that was occurring in New York City area … and, Warwick Township is about 8 miles south of Goshen; Warwick is significant in that is where it is believed that John (124706) first shows up in a 1790 Census
6) John and Ann are believed to be listed in a 1790 Warwick NY Census, i.e., the ages of John, Ann, their son, and their daughter mimic the family that ultimately moved to (W)V in the 1790s or early 1800s … Warwick is about 8 miles south of Goshen … the one issue with the 1790 Warwick Census is that there was another male identified in the household -- it is herby suggested that this additional male was John's father William, and that William accompanied John and Ann when they moved to (W)V … attached is a copy of the 1790 Warwick NY census which indicates that in the household of a John was two adult males, one adult woman, and two children; in 1790 the son of John (124706) and Ann was John S who would have been about 3 years old; their daughter Jane was about one
7) Although belief is that John (124706) was descended through Hope (12716) because of the common use of the name "Ashman" in John's (124706) descendants … it might be a stretch, but the proposed father of John (124706) is William and ... who was first cousins with Ashman (12769) … Samuel's (4963) father was also a Samuel (3341); and Ashman's (12769) father was Hope (12716) … Samuel (3341) and Hope (12716) were brothers; Hope married Mary Ashman … it is reasonable to believe that the brothers (Samuel and Hope) remained close; and, further that their children (Samuel and Ashman) saw each other at family gatherings … William (my suggestion that he was father of John (124706)) undoubtedly was familiar and/or heard the name "Ashman" many times while growing up; it is reasonable to believe that William like the name and could have suggested to John (124706) to name one of his son's Ashman … John (124706) and Ann named their 2nd child Ashman (125406); and, the name Ashman shows up many times in the descendants of John and Ann
8) I am not sure how all of the above matches with YDNA … [ the proposed father of William was proven incorrect - JRC] but, the 5 of us that are descendants of John (124706) have a unique YDNA commonality, and that YDNA commonality also shows up in the descendants of Ashman (21897) … in looking at Samuel's (3341) YDNA, I do NOT see the distinguishing factors that the five of us share … thus, the science may not support my theory
Bottom-Line: although I am not clear about the YDNA tracking … I do believe that William was the father of John (124706) … possibly there is another William born in 1735 that descended from Hope … however, there are a lot of factors that connect William to the Samuel lines … I am open for thoughts to agree/refute, but at this point, I propose that CC consider the lineage for John (124706) to be
William (584)  <---- yes (JRC)
John (587) <--- yes
Samuel (3341) -  <---- no
Samuel (4963) <---- no
William (???)
John (124706)

Jeff/Randall/Lori/Ron: Currently dealing with outside projects, family outings, etc.... I need to find time to document a lot of things I pulled together in Mar/Apr/May and send each of you some packages of information, i.e., (1) courthouse photocopies of deeds/tax/land records for John (124706), (2) an overall analysis of children of John and Ann in an effort to identify some candidates from their oldest son in hopes we could get a Y-DNA test, and (3) research into Warwick NY where we think John and Ann began their marriage … BUT, thanks to Ron Robe (first cousin of Tim who was the most recent DNA tester that mimics our DNA; Ron's mother was a Carpenter), I have verified some information that I think all of you will find VERY interesting.
Ron pointed me to some WPA cemetery records showing a William H Carpenter who was born in 1735 and died/buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Fairmont WV … in searching the web-based find-a-grave sites, William H does not show up … but in the records contained in the Marion County Genealogical Society there is a 1940s WPA Cemetery record's book that clearly shows William, and he is grouped with his grandson's family, i.e., David
Significance of this is
1) Some of us have been trying to link another John to be the father of John (124706); however, new evidence points to the fact that his father might have been William … John show's up as buying property in 1805 Monongalia (now Marion) County, William H died in 1807 in Monongalia County
2) WPA records indicate William H was a veteran of the Rev. War; and, that he was born around 1735 … we have previously discussed the possibility that John (124706) was probably born around 1765 --> William would have been 30 years old in 1765 when John (124706) was born
3) There are notes that indicate that William was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery as was his grandson David (128096); the WPA records group William together with David
4) Warwick NY 1790 census lists a family headed by John with a female, a son, and a daughter; these four fit the characteristics of John and Ann … the one anomaly to this logic was there was another elderly male in the house --> this might have been William
I plan to continue research into legal and land records to see if John (124706) and/or William appear in Monongalia County in the 1790s
ACTION: I would appreciate your thoughts and mind to begin to think about a William born in 1735 who might have had a son named John ...
