Served in F Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Died of Wounds 29 May 1918.1st Infantry Division - "Big Red One" - World War 1 - 1918
Four infantry regiments (16th, 18th, 26th and 28th) and three artillery regiments (5th, 6th and 7th) were ordered from the Mexican border in Texas to Hoboken, NJ, to board transports for France. On June 8, 1917, Brigadier General William Sibert assumed command of them as the “First Expeditionary Division.” Organized as a “square” division of more than 28,000 men, the First Division was twice the size of either the Allied or German divisions on the Western Front. The First Division won the first American victory in World War I at the Battle of Cantigny. Cantigny is a small village north of Paris, in the Picardy region of France. Held by the German Army, Cantigny formed a dangerous salient in the Allied lines. On May 28, 1918, the First Division attacked and defeated the German forces in the village and held it against repeated German counterattacks, despite suffering more than 1,000 casualties. The success raised the Allies’ morale, convinced the British and French that the Americans were capable of operating in independent fighting units, and disproved German propaganda about American incapacity.

Since the establishment of the United States Army in 1775, three regiments have held the designation 28th Infantry Regiment. ... The third version of the 28th Infantry Regiment is the one that has the permanent designation and history, and is the one this article is about. ...
The regiment first saw combat service from December 1901 to January 1904 during the Philippine–American War where the regiment was heavily involved in counter-guerrilla operations. Upon returning to the U.S. the Regiment relieved the 14th Infantry at Fort Snelling. During the years 1906–1908, the regiment, minus one battalion, performed guard and police duty as part of the United States Cuban Occupation force. In 1913, the 28th Infantry was ordered to Texas to assist in guarding the Mexican border against raids by Pancho Villa. Following the entry of the US into World War I, the regiment was assigned on 8 June 1917 to the First Expeditionary Division which later became the 1st Division.
On 29 June 1917, the men of Company K became the first American combat unit to set foot on European soil at Saint-Nazaire, France.
During the Battle of Cantigny, the 28th attacked the Germans and earned the moniker; "The Black Lions of Catigny."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/28th_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)By April 1918, the Germans had pushed to within 40 miles of Paris. In reaction to this thrust, the Big Red One moved into the Picardy Sector to bolster the exhausted French First Army. To the Division’s front lay the small village of Cantigny, situated on the high ground overlooking a forested countryside. It was the 28th Infantry, who attacked the town, and within 45 minutes captured it along with 250 German soldiers, thus earning the special designation “Lions of Cantigny” for the regiment. The first American victory of the war was a First Division victory.
https://www.1stid.org/historyDEATH:
PFC Ralph Carpenter died 29 May 1918 at a US Army Field Hospital near Cantigny, Somme, Hauts-de-France, France.
His death was DUE TO WOUNDS (DW) received on 28 May 1918.The Battle of Cantigny, fought May 28, 1918 was the first major American battle and offensive of World War I. The U.S. 1st Division, the most experienced of the five American divisions then in France and in reserve for the French Army near the village of Cantigny, was selected for the attack.
At 06:45 [H Hour] on May 28, 1918, American soldiers of the 28th Infantry Regiment left their jump-off trenches following an hour-long artillery preparation. Part of the preparation was counter-battery fire directed at German artillery positions. A rolling barrage, advancing 100 meters every two minutes, was calculated to give the attacking troops time to keep up with it.
The 28th Infantry Regiment (Colonel Hansen Ely, commanding) plus two companies of the 18th Infantry Regiment, three machine-gun companies and a company of engineers (3,564 men), captured Cantigny from units of the German Eighteenth Army. The village was situated on high ground surrounded by woods, making it an ideal observation post for German artillery.

Battle
In 1923, The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) erected 25 battle monuments, including one in the village of Cantigny that was dedicated on August 9, 1937.[7] At the unveiling of this monument, a speech was given (at the invitation of General John J. Pershing) by Col. Robert R. McCormick, who had commanded the 1st Battalion of the 5th Field Artillery Regiment at the battle. On one side of the memorial appears the inscription:ERECTED BY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST ATTACK BY AN AMERICAN DIVISION IN THE WORLD WAR.
On another side of the memorial appears the inscription:THE FIRST DIVISION UNITED STATES ARMY OPERATING UNDER THE X FRENCH CORPS CAPTURED THE TOWN OF CANTIGNY ON MAY 28 1918 AND HELD IT AGAINST NUMEROUS COUNTERATTACKS.
French translations of these inscriptions appear on the opposite sides of the monument.

A First Division Monument located along the road ½ mile southeast of Cantigny is one of five erected by the First Division itself in 1919. The names of the dead in the vicinity of Cantigny are engraved on the bronze plates. The monument is like a small concrete shaft, surmounted by a carved eagle of stone.

On May 28, 2008, the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cantigny, the McCormick Foundation and the Association of the 28th Infantry Regiment dedicated the statue "The Lion of Cantigny," an original bronze work by Stephen Spears depicting a doughboy of the regiment advancing through the village. The 28th Infantry was the assault regiment in the First Division's attack, the first major US battle of World War I. The regimental coat of arms is based on the lions in the heraldic arms of Picardy, where Cantigny is; the regiment's nickname is Black Lions.

The American War dead were buried near the village of Cantigny in a temporary cemetery. Some families requested their son's remains be returned to the USA for burial in family plots. This was done in the early 1920s at a reduced cost for the family. PFC Ralph Carpenter's body was one of these returned.VAMI:

TWO-CAR CRASH TAKES LIFE OF MRS. CARPENTER
Mrs. W. H. (Pauline) Carpenter died at 2:15 yesterday in James Archer Smith Hospital of injuries suffered in a two-car collision late Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Krome Rd. and Biscayne Dr. Arrangements are being made by Branam Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carpenter, who was alone in her car, was on her way home from the hospital where she was a nurse. Not believed seriously hurt, she took a turn for the worse at 4 o'clock Thursday morning. Police Sergeant John Arrant went to Miami for blood for a transfu-sion, but she failed to rally.
Mrs. Carpenter leaves her hus-band and a daughter Patricia Ann, 15, who make their home on Old Dixie Highway; her mother, Mrs. Lena Verostek of Ridgeway, Pa., three brothers and three sisters.
Born Pauline Elizabeth Verostek 41 years ago in Ridgeway, she trained in nursing at St. Vincent's Hospital in Erie, Pa. It was there that she met her husband who was hospitalized after an auto-mobile accident.
After their mar-riage, they lived in Akron where she nursed at City Hospital. The family came here seven years ago to make their home.
Mrs. Carpenter numbered her friends by the hundreds, many of whom were her patients. Rosary services will be held at Branam Funeral Home Sunday at 8 p.m. and funeral services will take place at 9 a.m. Monday at Cunt! Heart Catholic Church, of which Mrs. Carpenter was a mem-ber.
Rev. Fr. M. F. Mullaly will officiate. Interment will follow in Palm Cemetary, Naranja. R. Jim St. Germain of Miami, driver of the other car, escaped with negligible injuries but Mrs. Germaine is reported to be in a serious condition at the hospital.

William Carpenter (c1805) and Elizabeth Wilson of Burke, Yancey, Mitchell and Avery Co, NCmartygrant.com: Home > Genealogy > Carpenter > Families > William
[Commentary] [Children] [Researcher List] [Register Report] [A Note about sources] [How to contact me] [Home]
I (Marty Grant) am a 4th Great Grand nephew of William Carpenter.
William Carpenter was born ca 1804/05 in Burke County, NC in the Three Mile Creek area. This area became Yancey County in 1833, and Mitchell County in 1861, and finally, Avery County in 1911. William is a son of Jacob and Margaret Carpenter. William may have been named after his Uncle William Davis.
William was apparently home with his parents for the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census in Burke County.
William Carpenter married Elizabeth Wilson on 15 Nov 1831 in Burke (later Yancey) Co, NC. I'm not sure where I got this marriage date. I'm sure it was shared by another researcher, but I didn't document it for some reason. I don't know what proof there is that Elizabeth was a Wilson, but many researchers list her that way, and as a child of William Wilson and wife Elizabeth ---. I have not attempted to prove her parents. However, Jacob Carpenter reported the death of "Elizabeth Wilison" age 82 on Oct 20, 1842. He stated she was his grandmother, and "Wm Wilison" age 86 on July 30 1847 as his grandfather. He was but a small child when they died, and undoubtedly wrote this much later, but it seems likely he would have gotten their names right, and death dates right, though possibly not their ages.
Regarding the Wilson family, they were quite numerous in old Burke and Yancey County. In 1790, there was Edward, Ezekiel, George, Ginral (General?), Greenberry, 106-110, James, James, James, John, John, John, John Jr, Michal, Samuel, Thomas, and William. This is quite a few there early on. Though only one William Wilson was listed. This might be too early for this to be Elizabeth's father, assuming the information about her father being named William is correct.
In 1800 Burke, the Wilsons were just as numerous, including William Wilson (1774/84), with wife (1755/74), 2 daughters 10-15 (1784/90), and 1 son under 10 (1790/1800).
In 1810 Burke, there were still quite a few Wilson families (and "Willson") in Burke County, including one William Willson. This William was born ca 1765/84, and wife in the younger category (1784/94). He had three girls under 10, (1800/10), which could include daughter Elizabeth (c1803), if this is her family.
In 1820 Burke, there were again several Wilson families, including three Williams. The first, William (1794/1804) seem to be a newlywed, with a wife his same age, and no children. He did seem to be in the Three Mile Creek area. The next one, William (1775/94) had a large family, and seem to be in the area that later became McDowell County. He had one daughter, age 10-15 (1804/10), which doesn't quite fit for Elizabeth (c1803), but could be anyway. The last one was listed as William Wilson Esq (Esquire, probably meaning he was a Justice of the Peace, or a Constable). He was born 1775/94, and had no apparent wife, unless she was the oldest of three girls, one under 10 (1810/20), one 10-15 (1804/10) and one 16-25 (1794/1804). My belief, is that this oldest girl was our Elizabeth Wilson (c1803), and that this William's wife must have died between 1810 and 1820. This all depends on William actually being Elizabeth's father, for which I have no proof.
In 1830 Burke, there were numerous Wilson families still, including two Williams. The first one was born ca 1780/90, with wife, or mother (1760/70) with him. He had no other females in his household, so this doesn't seem to be ours. The other William, listed as William "Sr" was obviously the same one from 1820 who appeared to be widowed then. In 1830 he was age 60-69, born ca 1760/70, with one female age 15-19 (1810/15), and one male the same age.
The above shows that although this elder William Wilson (1760/70) did have a daughter, approximately Elizabeth's age (c1803), she was not still with him in 1830. Since she didn't marry William Carpenter until 1831, this is suspicious. Though at her age, she certainly could have been residing with a married sibling somewhere. Was she not the daughter of "William and Elizabeth Wilson" as other researchers show? "Uncle Jake" Carpenter stated in his Diary that Elizabeth Wilson died 1842, and she was his grandmother, and that William Wilson died in 1847 and was his grandfather. However, it has been difficult to reconcile this with census records. Though it certainly can be correct.
In 1840 Yancey, there were four William Wilson's listed, including William Sr age 50-59 (c1780/90) wife wife the same age, and a William (1800/10), and a William (1790/1800) and a William A. Wilson (1810/20). Of these, only William Sr even comes close in age to be the father of Elizabeth. Of course, Elizabeth was married by 1840, so no longer with her parents.
Checking all other Wilsons in 1830 Burke, I find only a couple with a girl Elizabeth's age. She would have still been single, presumably at home, and been approximately 27 years old, so in the 20-29 age group. James Wilson (c1760/70) had one apparent daughter this age. Robert Wilson (1780/90) had one apparent daughter this age. Thomas Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but it was probably his own wife instead. John Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Robert Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Joseph Wilson (1790/1800) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. Jesse Wilson Sr (1780/90) had an apparent daughter her age with him. Samuel Wilson (1800/10) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse. James Wilson (1810/15) had someone her age, but probably his own spouse.
Disregarding other evidence, the 1830 census only shows James Wilson (1760/70), Robert Wilson (1780/90), and Jesse Wilson Sr (1780/90) as prime candidates to be Elizabeth's father. This ignores the fact that Elizabeth could easily have been away from home then.
Anyway, I'll leave Elizabeth as a child of William (d 1847) and Elizabeth (d 1842) until other evidence confirms, or refutes this. Now back to the Carpenter family study.
On 28 Dec 1836, William Carpenter received a State land grant for 50 acres in Yancey County on North East side of Doe Hill adjoining Jacob Carpenter (his father) and William C. Carpenter (himself? Or someone else?). (Yancey Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 196 from "Index and Abstract of Deeds of Yancey Co., NC Deed Book 1" by Sally Williams, 1985).
William Carpenter was listed on the 1840 census in Yancey County not too far from his brother David and not too far from his father Jacob.

William Carpenter was listed on the 1840 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Vance's Company. He was taxed for 250 acres, valued at $125, and he had one white poll (himself), and his tax was $2.12 1/2. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 8, October 1993, 1840 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Vance's Company by Kathy Sullivan)William's 250 acres (as of 1840) is not all accounted for. I found a 50 acre land grant to him in 1836, but no other records (so far). That leaves 200 more acres yet unaccounted for.
William Carpenter was listed on the 1841 tax list in Yancey County in Captain Swan's Company. He was taxed for 250 acres (same as in 1840), valued at $150, and he had one white poll (himself). (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 5, Number 9, November 1993, 1841 Yancey County Tax List, Capt Swan's Company by Kathy Sullivan)
In the Spring 1848 term of Yancey County Court, the Valuations of Yancey County lands were all reduced by 33 1/3 cent per acre. William Carpenter was listed in North Toe River District with his land of $300 reduced to $200. (Toe Valley Genealogical Society Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 6, August 1990, "Yancey County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Minutes to Spring Term 1848" extracted by Rhonda Gunter)
William was named as a son in his father Jacob's Will of 8 Sep 1849 in Yancey County.
For the 1850 census, William and family were listed just three houses from his parents, and near several siblings.

William Carpenter died in Mitchell County on 15 Nov 1881. His son Jacob wrote of his death in his "Anthology of Death":"William Carpenter age 76 dide nov 15 1881. Wars fine honter, cil bare and wolves by 100 der by 100."
Elizabeth Wilson Carpenter died in Mitchell County on 21 Jul 1886. For some reason, her son Jacob didn't mention her death.
I'm not sure where William and Elizabeth are buried.
