Dear John:
Found this at the Fonda Archives today in a book entitled "Calendar of
Wills". I love it because it is a collection of way back stuff that we can
no longer actually get our hands on.
I'm researching the Dunning family who lived in the same area as my
Carpenter family, ie. Hope and Northville, Hamilton Co. NY. Came across
this:
Will of Jacob Dunning written 1770 Oct 15, probated Nov. 1, 1770 of Goshen
precint, Orange Co., NY yeoman, mentions son John, Jacob and Benjamin,
dau.. Bathsheba, Mehitabel and Mary. Real estate some in Wawayanda Patent
and personal property. Exec. 3 sons Witnesses: James Carpenter of Orange
co, schoolmaster, John Conkling and Elizabeth Dunning.
Don't know if you had all those Orange Co. Carpenter's or not but if you
do, here is a tidbit for James..at least now we know he was a schoolmaster!
Marcia   (NOTE: THIS DATA PROBABLY FOR THE JAMES CARPENTER B. 1752 IN GOSHEN, ORANGE, NY.)

Focus on Carpenter surname and places from the book. I ignored references to the carpenter occupation. OCR was used in many places to extract the data.

Israel H. Wickham was born in 1741, and was a tailor by trade. His wife was Elizabeth Carpenter, of Goshen. The deed from his father is dated 1769, and it may be inferred he came to Middletown about that time. He served for a time when only sixteen years old in the French war, going to Fort Edward. He was the owner of several slaves, setting them free at the age of eighteen and twenty-nine years. Among these was "Abel," who was well known and respected. Israel Wickham had two children,-Abigail, who died un-married, and Israel, Jr., born September, 1773.

E-MAIL: 10 AUG 2000 from: Carolyn Bayer mabayer@borg.com
I have a copy of a land deed of Joseph Carpenter, JR made in 1800 where
he and Jesse Carpenter bought some land in Washington County.
It says Joseph JR is a farmer. It doesn't say where they came from
but Joseph was on the future census there and Jesse was not.
Joseph on 1810 and 1820. Last time Joseph was on, he
died in 1820. His family remained on in the following years. I also
have a copy of a land indenture made August 30, 1827. It was made by
his children to settle the estate of Joseph. It states that Joseph
died about 7 years ago. Seems that Solomon Thurston was granted
letters of administration and it was never done.  Here are the
children of Fannie Crandle and Joseph Carpenter: Sally b. 1796 m. Asa
Lanfear, Betsey b. 1797 m. Ephraim Holley (my line), James m. Alma no
dates, Clark C b. 1801 m. Deborah, Joseph III b. 1802 m. Lydia Baker,
Laura b. 1807 m. Albro Tripp and Thomas b. 1808 who m. Arsu (Ursala)
Evarts. Joseph was a minor at the time his father died. Joseph III and
Lydia loss their son Joseph in the Civil War. The AF has Thomas who m.
Ursala Evarts b. 1818 or something like that. They are on many census
and their age also is on the census. He and the Carpenter family
(meaning the ones listed here) are on the Warren County census for
many years. From the dates of birth of their children I imagine Fannie
and Joseph were m. circa 1795 and if they were around 18-20 at that
time it would seem like that Joseph could have been born in 1777. How
do I find out from the land deed where he came from?  I really believe
my Joseph could have come from the Orange County family. I am running
out of clues. Thanks again for everything.
Carolyn Bayer mabayer@borg.com

Tuesday, July 19, 1887, The Wellsboro Agitator, Wellsboro, Tioga Co, Pa.:

Mrs. Martha T. and Mr. Benjamin C. Wickham

Mrs. Benjamin C. Wickham died at her home in the borough of Tioga last Thursday, July 14, 1887, Martha T., wife of Benjamin C. Wickham, aged 71 years morning, and her aged husband died on Friday morning, July 15, 1887, aged 83 years.  Mrs. Wickham had been in feeble health for some time, but had kept about the house and assisted in the care of her husband, who was critically ill, until last Tuesday night when she was prostrated.  Mrs. Wickham was 71 years of age.  She was an excellent woman and much respected.  Mr. Wickham was in his 84th year.  He was born at Mattituck on Long Island in June, 1804, his father being Thomas Wickham, a member of an old and prominent family of that place.  Benjamin moved to Elmira in 1827, and went into the mercantile business, his first partner being Mr. Viol.  He afterwards entered into partnership with Mr. David H. Tuthill.  The firm established a branch store at Tioga in 1832, with Mr. Wickham as active manager and the style of the concern being B. C. Wickham & Co.  In 1844 this co-partnership was succeeded by Wickham & Baldwin, who continued until 1848 and were succeeded by Wickham, Aiken & Mathews.  In the fall of 1859 Mr. Wickham became the president of the Tioga County Bank.  Mr. A. S. Turner, the cashier of the institution, retired from it in 1867, when it was changed to a private bank with Mr. Wickham at its head and Mr. David L. Aiken as cashier.  The business was carried on under the firm name of B. C. Wickham & Co., until its disastrous failure in December, 1883.  At the time of the failure Mr. Wickham was in his 80th year and in failing health.  His bankruptcy turned him out of the home in which he and his aged wife had hoped to pass their remaining years, and although they found a home with his sister residing at Tioga and were furnished by his children with everything needed for their comfort, his last days were clouded by the suspicions of those who had been ruined by the failure of the bank.  He claimed, however, that he had never intentionally wronged any person, and that he thought he had property enough to meet every obligation.  Mr. Wickham was many years a leading and enterprising citizen of Tioga.  After the great fire of February, 1871, he built the brick block in the third story of which is the large hall bearing his name.  He was twice married.  His first wife, Catharine Mathews, died in 1841 and was buried in the old village cemetery beside three children who died young.  Four children survive him; Mrs. Q. W. Wellington, of Corning, Mrs. Rufus Frost, of Boston, and Messrs. T. A. and C. H. Wickham, of Tioga.

The Wellsboro Agitator, July 19, 1887, page 1:

Mrs. Martha T. and Mr. Benjamin C. Wickham

Mrs. David L. UPDATE:  Constance Leaman < r.leaman@comcast.net> provided an update on this family on Sunday, June 13, 2004 .   GOOD JOB by CONSTANCE!   Her notes follow...

Notes for HANNAH CARPENTER:
My great great grandmother.

She is the daughter of Jesse Carpenter, (abt. 1755-1815) and Sarah Seely, (1762-1827). She lived a good, long life, 84 years, 5 months and 8 days.

Wm. H. Edwards says Hannah Carpenter Edwards is "of Chenango," but she was born in Goshen, Orange County, New York, moved with her parents to Elmira, Tioga County, New York, and met George Cunningham Edwards there (I think he was studying law there, or perhaps clerking at the time, married him, and moved with him to Bath, Steuben County, New York, where he was the first judge of Steuben County.

Amos B. Carpenter, The Carpenter Memorial, 162,  has her as the wife of David Roe. Her sister Clarissa is actually the woman who was married to David Roe. She is the only wife of George Cunningham Edwards, with whom she had 9 children. (A daughter Clarissa died at the age of two, and a second daughter was named Clarissa.)

Hannah Carpenter Edwards is mentioned in her aunt, Hannah Seely Cooley's will. Hannah Seely Cooley was Hannah Carpenter Edwards's maternal aunt:

Hannah Cooley of Elmira, 30 July 1822. "I am executor of my late husband Jonathan Cooley. Executor to sell land in Newburg NY. Nephews, Jonathan C. Carpenter, son of Jesse; Robert Carpenter, son of Joseph of Elmira; James Sayre. Nieces, Eloise Carpenter, Zerviah Maxwell, Hannah Edwards. Sisters, Sarah Carpenter, Elizabeth Sayre, Azubah Baldwin. Executors, Joseph and Jesse Carpenter of Elmira. Witnesses, William Maxwell, Azuba Seely. Probated 10 Feb 1823."

More About HANNAH CARPENTER:
Baptism: March 6, 1791, First Presbyterian Church, Goshen Township,  Orange County, New York
Burial: 1875, Nondaga Cemetery, Bath, Steuben County, New York
Census 1: 1840, Bath, Steuben County, New York
Census 2: 1850, Bath, Steuben County, New York
Census 3: 1860, Bath, Steuben County, New York at home of daughter Clarissa Dudley
Census 4: 1870, Bath, Steuben County, New York
Will: Abt. 1875, Steuben County, New York

Notes for GEORGE CUNNINGHAM EDWARDS:
My great great grandfather. Great grandson of Jonathan Edwards. First Judge of Steuben County.

More About GEORGE EDWARDS and HANNAH CARPENTER:
Marriage: May 21, 1812, New York (probably Elmira).

They had 9 children.

George Cunningham Edwards reassigned to this Hannah Carpenter pending proof.  Last speculation appears incorrect.  See below.  JRC  7 Oct 2002.
Dear John,
Thanks for your response. I think the naming conventions bear out the very strong possibility that Hannah was the daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Sarah/Sally Seely and the sister of Clarissa Carpenter. Now for some proof.

Dear Connie,
When you read the notes, you will find out that Frank Bradner states the his source has confused some of the Carpenters he submitted.  I concur.  I think this is one of those incidents.
Look at children, places and other similarities.  Take a piece of paper and add up the pluses and minuses for each possibility.  You will come to a conclusion but not proof.
This is the hard part.  The proof.  This means going back to the orginal sources and sorting the wheat from the chaff.
Enjoy the hunt!
And let me know what you conclude or prove!

I have been in touch with Frank Bradner quite a bit in the last several days.
I believe that you are suggesting to me that Jesse Carpenter is more likely the father of my Hannah Carpenter than Benjamin Carpenter, and certainly there are some names that make one wonder, not to mention the birth and death date similarities of the 2 Hannahs.
My great grandfather, John Edwards, whose parents are George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter has a sister Clarissa Roe Edwards who married James Rowe Dudley. And my great grandfather named his first daughter Clara Dudley Edwards, obviously after the Clarissa and Dudley connection. At the same time, there is a Clarissa Carpenter, daughter of Jesse, who married David Roe.
George Cunningham Edwards and Hannah Carpenter stayed in Bath, Steuben County, New York, to which they had moved by 1823, when Alexander Edwards was born. My great grandfather, John, was also born there, as was his first daughter. I am descended from his 2nd wife, Constance Lucretia Hunter and 2nd daughter, Mary Constance Edwards, my grandmother.
I really don't know what to make of this confusion. Perhaps you can set me straight.
Connie

Dear Constance,
You have a small mystery and conflict of data. Compare the 2 briefs below. Each contains a Hannah Carpenter (*****). Look at the notes.
My guess is that George C. Edwards is matched with the wrong Hannah Carpenter.  Your thoughts?

Frank Bradner has a different spouse (George Edwards)  and family listed.  This is probably her second family.

2143. Samuel Carpenter

Number 1003 in the Carpenter Memorial.  Page 162
No family listed.  He married an Anna, probably after the Revolutionary war
and moved west.

Samuel enlisted in the Revolutionary war when he was 21 years of age July, 9,
1775 from Goshen, Orange, county, NY.  He applied for a pension Sept 27,
1832 when he was 78 years of age; he was then residing in Licking county,
OH.  His pension was allowed for ten months & six days service as a private
in the NY troops. A part of the time he served under Captain Denton and
Col. Clinton.  His widow Anna also received a pension for the services of her
husband as above.
Samuel the father (#344) is no doubt the Samuel who enlisted as a Sergeant in
Captain George White's Company, 2nd battalion, NY at Fort George on Oct.
13, 1775.  We think it is the same Samuel who enlisted as private in Captain
Daniel Denton's company, 3rd NY, commanded by Col. James Clinton, June
28, 1775.  This regiment was raised from Orange county, NY.  The Samuel who
served as private in Captain John Wood's company of exempt militia in the
county of Orange, NY in the service of the U.S. on different occasions from
July 7, 1778 to July 20, 1779 was probably Samuel the father (#344) also.

The records show in Adjutant General's office, War Dept. that Samul Carpenter served as an Ensign in the 4th Penna Reg. Revolutionary War. His name appears on an undated list of Pennsylvania Officers appointed by the Council of Safety, pursuant to a Resolution of Congress dated Sept 16, 1776. This list shows him commissioned Jan 3rd, 1777. Nothing further has been found of record relative to his services. See DAR #321982(Cleo's) In the history of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family, it says he enlisted "when he was 21 years old on July 9, 1775 from Goshen, Orange Co, NY. He applied for pension Sept 27, 1832 when he was 78 years of age, and was then residing in Licking County, Ohio. The 1830 Census of St. Albans Twp, Alexandria, Licking Co, Ohio shows Samuel Carpenter, Sr, a male between 70-80 (Sam was 76); a female between 50-60 (Anna Hillyar was 56); and a male child between 10-15, plus a female child between 10-15. (could these be grandchildren or children?) I also shows a Samuel Carpenter between 30 & 40; and a Benj Carpenter between 30-40 (Ben was 39)
The book, " Alexandria and St. Albans Township, Licking County Ohio", pub in 1952, page 21 states that one of the first families to move to St. Albans was the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, from Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county, Ohio where they remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the farm known as the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys (now owned by Raymond Tatham.) Upon this farm and at the home of Samuel, Sr, was organized the first church (Alexandria Methodist) and within the walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within the bounds of our township.
St. Alban's township was organized in 1813, and the first election was held at the house of Samuel Carpenter, Sr, in the Fall of 1813. Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for the Justice of Peace in the year 1816 when Sam Carpenter, Sr was elected. The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many contests, and the defeated party is probably still dissatisfied.
The Licking County Courthouse burnt down in 1869 so copies of marriages, wills, probates, etc are lost to us.

HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY - 554
CHAPTER LXIX.
Samuel Carpenter, sr., from Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, also settled with his family in this township in the spring of 1809. He came in 1805 to Rush creek, Fairfield county, where he remained until he settled here.
The first church was organized and the first sermon preached in the cabin of Mr. Carpenter, by Mr. Bacon, a minister traveling through the country on foot, carrying his saddle-bags on his arm, in 1810 or 1811. He remained over night with the

Carpenters, and preached this sermon to a small gathering of settlers. Rev. J. B. Finley, however, says, in his history of Methodism, that he preached the first sermon in that township, at the cabin of S. Carpenter, sr., late in 1810 or early in the following year. If he did so, he failed to make the same impression on the younger members of his congregation as was made by Mr. Bacon.
Mr. Carpenter erected the first brick house in the township, in 1821; and died in March, 1834, aged eighty-one. His son, Rev. Samuel Carpenter, settled on the farm adjoining his father's, and erected a brick residence in 1827, the oldest brick building now standing in the township. He was married to Mercy Cornell, December 21, 1809, by Rev. T. Harris, of Granville; and had they been married in the township, would have been the first; but, though both had been living in the township, and shortly after the marriage made this their home, they were married at the house of the bride's mother in Granville; hence the marriage of Gideon Cornell to Miss Julia Lobdell, July 17, 1810, was the first marriage ceremony performed in the township. Rev. S. Carpenter died in August, 1851, aged seventy-eight years.
591
The first election was held in the fall of this year (1813) at the house of S. Carpenter, sr.; the first trustees elected were Isaiah Beaumont, Peter S. Stephens and David Drake; the first clerk was Noble Landon, who named the township after his native place, St. Albans, Franklin county, Vermont. This privilege was accorded him in consideration of furnishing four gallons of whiskey to the seventeen electors present

Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for a justice in the year 1816, when S. Carpenter, sr., was elected. The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many contests; and it is safe to say the defeated party is still dissatisfied.
